- This is how I experienced polar night in Murmansk, the biggest city in Arctic Circle. It is located in the north-west of Russia and borders with Finland.
Just imagine sun not rising for 40 days..it's not the complete darkness, but a few hours of magic colours in the sky which seem like sunset.
Now, Murmansk is one of the fastest shrinking cities in Russia! Its population was around half a million people at the times of the Soviet Union, and according to the 2010 census less than 300,000 people still lived there
What is it like to live at the edge of the world?

It is actually not that cold compared to other places of its latitude. The warm Gulf stream influences it and therfore its port doesn't freeze in the winter. That's the case why the city was built since Archangelsk had frozen port and St. Petersburg was blocked by other countries, Russia needed a connection to the west.

We went in feb 2017 and unfortuntely cloudy all week and couldnt see northern lights but incredible place we do recommend it.
It was far much colder in Moscow.

Murmansk isn't even that cold LOL. Try going to northern Canada (or central Alaska) in the winter. The all-time record low in Murmansk are normal winter temperatures
in Canada's arctic and subarctic regions.
@ywgmb35 Alaska or Northern Canada 🇨🇦 isn't as cold as Yakutia (Russia 🇷🇺)
@@emmaegede1262 no it's not, at least the average temperatures aren't. But Murmansk isn't even close to there. Murmansk, Hammerfest, and Tromso are extremely mild cities for those latitudes thanks to the ocean current.
I like the snow a lot I prefer cold too the sun but also enjoy a balance of both.

Nie problemem jest to że jest tak tam zimno ale to że domy tam zbudowane to są stare poniszczone i kiepsko zrobione a można by w dzisiejszych czasach im wybudować dobre porządne dostosowane do tego klimatu. Cała Rosja bylejakość, brak dbania o obywateli!
Почему вы врёте? В Мурманске отличные дома, с централизованным отоплением, горячей водой. Целые районы построены на скалах, никаких повреждений нет. Отличные дороги, театры, дворцы спорта, детские сады и школы. Очень красивая природа. Вы просто завидуете.

Какая сцена, какое фойе, ты обалдеешь от восторга! А завтра в Мурманском драматическом театре балет "Щелкунчик", у меня билеты на 6 часов вечера. Я поеду на своей Субару из салона и нисколечко не замёрзну 🤗. 🏙️❄️✨
