Hi Chris. I'm seeing more and more of these sailing channels showing people have bought these older boats and you are so right, there seems to be this never ending slew of problem after problem that arises all over the boats requiring constant fixing. Just when they think all is now good, up comes another major problem. Engines, Rigging, rotten hulls and bulkheads, compression posts, bad fiber glass, bad aluminum and other metal fittings in places that just aren't easily visible. Take a look at the Sailing Beau and Brandy latest, or the Sailing GBU and the Wildlings people I know it must be getting expensive for them all but I would think the worst part would be the constant nagging worry about what is going to break next. How can they ever go sailing without that constant worry? That's not the life for me. Thanks for showing all the reasons to try and get a newer well maintained boat if possible. I know not everyone can afford one but it looks like they are either going to pay on the front end or a never ending outlay after they own it. Actually the other thing I noticed is that they seem to have to carry around 10 times more tools be ready for all these problems.

I'm now a fan of the 46.1, fast, stable and it's roomy. A beautiful boat by any definition.
    Everything one could want...

46.1 Feels like a charter boat. If you need that big and that price, you might want to look at Catamaran.

I love the dual canted the rudders. No more helm load up when the boat is heeled over. Like it will be most of the time. About time that a manufacturer did this.

Great video. I really enjoyed the Beneteau detail. I have really preferred the look of Jeaneau, but I think you have changed my mind with these Oceanis videos.

I got into sailing just recently (took my ASA 101 the other week) and it seriously had me considering being a live aboard sailor, even the wife isnt opposed to it.
I came up with a plan to gather some knowledge and skills sailing around the Caribbean for a bit before making the first trans Atlantic journey to the Mediterranean. I fell in love with Beneteau looking at them in the Marina and I was considering the 40.1 or the 46.1 which I would want to kit out with solar panels and a water maker, so I could save myself some slip fees, and hooking up Starlink so I could have permanent internet connection.

Amazing video, thank you. Though most of them is way out of my budget 😢, it is crazy not to consider the 38 or 35 for a cruising couple instead of an old 42 that will need repairs and outfitted for ocean crossing.
    It was highly educational.

Not only are the new Oceanis boats longer at the water line, the chine is almost straight up and down as is the bow and stern below the water line. Way more space compared to the old "deep keel" designs.

As always Chris, another great video. I just love the Beneteau line of sailboats. Still looking for that best option for me, price is the big thing for now.😃😃😃

That 46.1 1st has the space of a cat, but with half the price tag. The only negative for me is the 7’ draft, especially if sailing the Bahamas. But, add a dinghy davit and shallow areas become more doable; lots of options on these boats, like a swinging keel. Just pick the model that’s right for the individual, as you say.

While water line is important like any single number on a sailboat it only tells part of the story. Overall hull shape determines the very relevant dynamic water line length. If I was caught out in a storm I know which boat I'd rather be on. Completely unprotected twin rudders seem like the ultimate crab pot grabber at best and a likely point of impact/damage/water ingress. Designs are always tradeoffs not simply one is better than the other. The 46.1 seems well designed for cruising the med and siting at anchor while the more stout & heavier PS is designed to handle the unexpected in remote places around the world. Cutter rig has some big wins not mentioned, most notably when shortening sail is moves the center of effort closer to the mast/center of resistance. Finally I see the big weakness of the modern glued in grid based designs is not being able to withstand a hard underwater impact at anywhere near hull speed as seen by the multiple rebuilds of boat with keel/structural grid failures. One might expect significant cosmetic damage from such an impact but the keel, grid & hull shouldn't be closed to being compromised by a single impact. The rest are design/performance/safety/comfort choices - pick your flavor for your needs - but for extended cruising there's a very good reason why a 30yr old PS is still going for $250k.

The design of this boats is old old european boatbulding for coast boats. Because of many technik and radar etc. they now build for bluewater in the tropics... because u see storms before they can hit u.

Beautiful! Do Beneteau make polo shirts? I can afford a shirt almost certainly. A question about those beautiful Grey and Azure hull colours do they make the boat Hot? Heard a gut with a blue hulled Oyster 485 say never get a blue hulled boat as they are steamy as inside.

That stock photo of 30.1 looks like it's heeling a lot. Are the newer small designs equipped with the same features as the larger ones that are purported to heel less? Thanks for another great vid!

Some of them however yes the smaller ones like the 30.1 will still heel as they are very light and lively vessels
