A customer approached me quite a while ago with a bit of an unusual request, he wanted a knife made to take with him to Antarctica!
This customer is a former Marine, currently works as an EMS Lieutenant, and will shortly be headed to Antarctica to work as a Communications Tech for the research base down there. He wanted a super tough knife to take with him, and requested that I make him a 5" Resolute to fill that need.
It was a lot of fun working through the process of making the knife for him!
The knife specs:
Model name - 5" Resolute
Blade steel - A2 tool steel @ 62.5HRC
Handle - Black and Toxic Green laminated G10
Sheath - Black Kydex
Overall length - 9.6" (243mm)
Blade length - 5" (127mm)
This video was made over the course of several months (summer was a little slow for me!), the knife itself took about 14-16 hours to make, quite a bit longer than usual because the filming makes the whole process more difficult to coordinate!
About 11 hours of footage was taken over the course of making the knife, and then that was condensed down to the video you see above! About 4 days was spent just editing the video!
I'm always happy to answer any questions you might have, just ask in the comments!

Of all the knife makers I've seen on RUclips, the cleanliness of your workshop makes my OCD so happy. All the other shops are so messy, yet is yours is so prestige and organised, as well as super clean.
Not to mention, your knives have super nice designs too!
Thanks for the kind words mate!
I kinda like having workshops be a bit messy. It gives them character.
Darius I wasn’t saying I have character I was simply stating it gives an “element” to them. I don’t even have a workshop lol. I do know people who do though. Ig the typical workshop I see is usually a bit messy so it’s just the idea I have of them.
EnterTheFatrix I prefer forged knives but to each their own
It’s super hard to keep some shops clean, especially when you do blacksmithing in them
This was actually quite relaxing to watch! I've never seen such an elegant, clean build (or workshop :) ). Simply breathtaking! A true example of having the right tools for the job.
+brandon2076 Thanks very much mate! Glad you liked it!
+Gough Custom you are the number one
cant agree more
Yes, top notch tools, knowledge, and execution. Very nicely done!
Ah, I just can't get enough of these knife-making videos! There's something so relaxing about watching someone else create something so beautiful.
Thanks Jacob! Glad you liked the video!
Absolutely loved it.
And what the cleanness of the workshop speaks volumes about the thoughtfulness of the planning and perfection of the execution.
Thanks very much Steve! The cleanness may also speak to the OCD tendencies of the owner :D
This is one of those videos that you have to show to everybody you know... So rich in details, so mesmerizing...
That's very good work, my friend... You're a true artist! Keep it up!
Greetings from Brazil
Gough Custom this movie is great. I must say Your workshop is very clean. Good enviroment for a knifemaking :) I hope one day we will be able to shake hands and chat about knives and movies. Take care mate :)
Hey Trollsky! Thanks for watching mate, glad you liked it! It would be great to meet one day, hopefully that shall happen. Take care!
Great to see you two talking , I started making my own knives because of your youtube clips. Thank you both.
Andrew Joseph Trollskyy seems like a great guy, and he was an inspiration for me when I was just starting out with both videos and knives!
I'm sorry, but I don't see any artistry or craftsmanship here. It's all just tracing lines, connecting dots, and letting machines do all the work. The production might as well be fully automated.
JustTheTip187 then you underestimate the process of making a knife dude
Man! these knives look great and so are the videos, I keep finding myself re-watching these videos especially this one
Thanks mate! Glad you like my work!
Every year when the weather turns nippy i come back to the northmen videos and yours. There's just something nice about watching careful metalworking when it's cold out.
Thanks very much! Really glad you're still enjoying my videos
You are a master of your craft. Also your good at making videos, you had my attention the entire time!
Thanks mate! The video part took me quite a while to get the hang of...
Interested in buying one of the knives in this video also would like to know the steel that you are using hopefully you see this 6 years later great work ether way
cleanest knife making video i've ever seen on youtube
+Hussin Mohamad Thanks mate!
Damn your workshop looks like a NASA laboratory.
+julittok Haha, thanks dude!
Not surprised he don't make anything, just works on other men's steel. No forging, a kid could do it . Is the knife to cut thru a lame dog?
@@williamavery9185 as opposed to everyone else digging and minning their metal
@@williamavery9185 OK bud, maybe you should back off, I bet you couldn't make anything near as nice as he could. And why you gotta drag someone down for something they enjoy doing???
I would love a workshop like that. They could not get me out of there 🤣🤣
I love the simplicity and elegance of your process. I've just seen every single error I made with my first knife with such clarity but now I've seen every single solution.
+Andrew whiter haha thanks mate, glad you liked the video!
Man you are an artist and craftsman in one!! Gorgeous work.
Thank very much Mr. Kitty!
Those are such beautiful knives! Love seeing the full process, I would love to do something like this
Thanks very much mate!
I would love to get to do this, too.
I can see the effort and time that went into this.....EXCELENT Work!
Thanks mate!
I don't ever plan on making knifes, but for the last 4 days all I've been watching is how to forge knifes. This is the most professional way I've seen it been done. It's just so cool.
+The Aztech Thanks very much mate! Sounds like you've been on a fun youtube bender!
so awesome!! thanks for the opportunity to watch the process :)
+Rob Chesley Now worries, thanks for watching!
I watched this video over and over again since it came out... I regret nothing.
In-ha Kim I'm glad you like it mate!
Beautiful work and a remarkably clean shop. Very nice for a change to see someone take pride in where they work. Thanks for the video
***** Thanks very much mate!
Did you make your own template or purchase the one you used for the Kydex sheath?
***** I made the template
Gough Custom ok thanks
I sailed a merchant ship to Antarctica in 2015. We brought in supplies for the base and took back trash and ice core samples. I'm guessing it was around the same time you made this knife. Your shop is amazingly clean & organized.
Very cool mate! I'm curious how long the trip was and what port you left from?? Sounds like it would be very cool, literally and figuratively! :)
@@GoughCustom
We left Port Hueneme, California and proceeded to Lyttleton, New Zealand before heading to Mcmurdo Station in Antarctica. I don't remember the exact dates, but I think it was about 3 months round trip, including our time spent in ports. Kiwis were super nice people! I had the best rack of lamb ever in Christchurch.
@@thefish8002 very cool mate! My GF loves New Zealand, unfortunately I have yet to spend any real time there, hopefully in the future! Thanks for the answer!
Точно, выверенно и никаких лишних движений!!!
Мастер. И приятно удивила чистота, как у врача.
все,как в аптеке и никаких излишеств)))
Thank-you very much, I appreciate your kind words! Sorry it took me so long to respond!!
This is pretty awesome-- thanks for sharing!
I've never wanted a knife so bad in my life.
Haha, thanks mate!
I’ve never seen before the workshop be so clean and everything be organised as well, but his workshop is amazing, and also his job is so good, excellent.
Thanks very much mate!
This is the world's most beautiful knife. Simple, classical and practical.
Wojciech Olejnik Thanks very much mate, glad you like it!
What is the temperature you set the griddle at? How long do you let the kydex sit (cool down) before you take it out of the foam press. Thanks brother.
+SLAVIK TELY Hey mate! I set the griddle at around 350ºF, then I wait for the Kydex to heat to 290ºF before putting it in the press. I leave it in the press for around 5 minutes, then take it out to finish cooling.
Awesome!!!!
Thanks mate!
Você sumiu, faz mais vídeos
Your workshop, your workmanship, your knives, all immaculate ! it's an absolute pleasure watching you work. Your attention to detail, listing materials and tools, the works! Fantastic job man. I'm really enjoying your videos.
Thank you very much mate!!
Truly brilliant!
Thanks man!
Gough Custom how thick is the steel that you usually start out with when making your blades?
Hi Aaron. Where do you buy your foam for the Kydex press? And can you give dimensions of your press. That would help me out a ton.
+SLAVIK TELY Hey mate! I bought the foam from Knifekits.com. I think the press dimensions are around 12x8" or so, maybe just a little larger.
@@GoughCustom That’s definitely the place to get the right foam.
Congratulaions..... dude, a very, very, well done knive, excellent !!!!
Thanks Michael!
I've seen some of your "making of..." videos. I'm every time surprised, how precise and professional your work is.......
The most impressive display of blade sharpness I've seen across several hundred knife making videos!
Thanks very much mate!
That satin finish is sexy.
Brilliant!!!
Thanks mate!
11 mins of showing a sexy knife being beautifully made perfectly, then decides to shave with it
+Cahen Well I mean when you've got a crazy sharp knife it would be a crime *not* to shave with it!
I can't find words, what are you doing is amazing. As a knife fanatic watching this video make me feel happy, everything is perfect.I would be the happiest man in the earth if I could work in a workshop as yours.
Marvellous job, and please make more videos like this!
+Barnabás Kővári Thanks very much mate!
I want one
how relaxing and interesting haha
+Gadget Tube Glad you liked it!
clean up your workshop man, it's a damn mess :P
+coenpat Haha, sorry man!
Now this is a knife! No fancy shapes, no-nonsense "tacticool" things: just a clean, sharp, refined piece of nice handcraft.
In my opinion you make some of the best looking knives around, thanks for sharing.
+Sierra Foxtrot Thanks very much mate! As you said I very much focus on making knives that are designed to be used!
+Gough Custom No problem, as I see it you're being successful. Hope you'll keep making these long enough for me to get my hands on one. Have a good day!
+Sierra Foxtrot Thanks mate, you too!
I have nothing but fascination for how every knifemaker goes about one's craft!
I appreciate that approach very much! Everyone has different and interesting ways of doing things!
I must say it. Your dedication to perfecting the process is so exceptional that I consider your clips "motivational". I strive for perfection in my electrical installation work but , from what I saw, I have a long way to go. Kudos to you.
+1973MACIEJ1973 Thanks very much for the kind words mate!
I can not wait to purchase one of your knives. My battle buddy for over 8 years now never goes anywhere without it (on the clock). He showed me your detail, down to your hand signature inside the box, when we were back home.
Your attention to detail is incredible, Aaron. Thanks for always being there to answer my questions (like my recent one about taking the knife in the ocean). I'm glad I bought an inexpensive titanium knife vs ruining your gorgeous artwork.
No worries at all mate! Always happy to talk with anyone about knives and manufacturing!
It's the cleanest workshop I've ever seen. The knife is a masterpiece.
Thanks very much!!
Most high tech proffessional knife work I have ever seen. All methods/tools optimized too perfection. Very impressed. Really nice knife design too. All thumbs up!
Thanks very much Fredrik! You might like my newer videos even more!
Beautiful workmanship! I honestly hope you're selling hundreds if not thousands of these knives, you deserve every success in life!
Thanks mate! It's coming along slowly!
I'm almost speechless. You're an artist. Well done.
Thanks very much Sonny!
It is fun to watch this again after I have been making knives for about a year. I see so much more than I did before making any knives.
Hey mate! Long time! It fun for me to go back and watch my early videos as well, things have changed so much!
I know...we talked about it in your other video, you explained the reason for using the cnc machines. But man... do i love to see you doing this..!
Love your skills!
Thanks very much mate!
Hard to describe words with the quality and precision that you work. Awesome video. Thank you
Thanks very much mate!
The knives look just amazing, but this is one of the best videos I've ever seen on the process. I give you great respect. Thanks for this. It was wonderful to watch.
Thanks very much mate, glad you liked the video!
Your knives are great example of modern craftsmanship. Amazing job
Thanks very much mate!
Absolutely CANNOT wait until mine is done! My blade's process isn't this exactly, but knowing how it's built makes it all the more awesome. Thanks for all the work you do!
Thanks very much Michael! I appreciate the support mate!
I have not seen one of your vids for a while now. I am quite happy to see you have a professional shop now and are still putting out these videos. Great work as always. If ever I find myself in better financials, I swear to buy one of your knives.
+ballzack57 Thanks mate! I've actually just finished the first new batch with the help of CNC after going full-time! Will be doing a video about that soon.
I have even more respect for what you do knowing that you keep doing knives with pretty much no power tools even if you have a workshop full of expensive tools !
It doesn't happen too often that I still make a knife by hand, but it does happen occasionally!
Hello, it's fun to watch you make the knives. I could watch for hours. What strikes me is how clean your workshop is! Greetings from Hamburg, Ronald
Thanks very much Ronald!
Your designs are deceptively simple in looks. But it’s the extreme attention to detail, metallurgy and craftsmanship that make them so. I’m totally in awe man!!
And I love the satin finish on the blades. Yes - a mirror finish might look good to a lot of people, but use the knife a few times and the mirror soon gets scratches and scuffs. Give me satin any day.
Thanks very much Lawrence, really glad you like my work!
That is SERIOUSLY enjoyable to watch! Excellent shop set-up as well. Limitless possibilities with the right tools. Very nice work.
Thanks John! Really glad you enjoyed the video mate!
Can't stop to thank you.
I've never seen such a generous expertise sharing.
Thanks mate!
I have to agree with everyone else man..cleanest most professional and proficient shop I've seen yet..greatest knife maker yet..thanks ..awesome vid
Thanks very much, glad you liked the video, thanks for watching!
So clean and organized. Your ocd reflects on your work. Bravo.
Thanks mate!
Your attention to detail is something else. I would like to own one of these
I can not find the words to express my appreciation for your work and your professionalism.
Great.
+1212loky Thanks very much mate!
The cleanest workshop ever. Well done.
Where to begin... First, beautiful videography! And how often does one have the opportunity to watch a Master at work... most inspiring. I must say, however, I've acquired a case of tool envy. What a wonderful shop you have.
+Ken Holzman Thanks very much Ken! Glad you liked the video! You should check out the new ones that show my new CNC process... The workshop has come a long way since the Antarctica video!
OMG THIS IS TRULY AN ART ITS AMAZING TO ACTUALLY SEE WHAT IT REALLY TAKES TO MAKE A QUALITY BLADE. BRAVO STANDING OVATION.
+Luis Thillet Thanks Luis!
Great video, showing that precision and art make fantastic results. And I can see that you don't make any compromise on tools.
+luc boisseau thanks very much mate!
At first I wanted to be frustrated that you had all the perfect tools...then I took a second a realized this is some things I aspire to have. This was an amazing video.
Having a shop like this (and my new one) has been a long time dream for me as well!
@@GoughCustom it inspired me and I made a new blade with simple tools.
It's not as good by any means but this video kept me driven. The goal is to get good enough to sell my stuff so I can invest in better tools.
Nice work mate!
01:30 - Water bucket spark catcher. So frikking obvious that I have never thought about it for my mostly wood based workshop! Thank you!
No worries! It does work surprisingly well!
Impeccable workshop, great attention to detail, nothing you do seems superfluous. I tip my hat, Sir!
Thanks very much John!
The cleanest and most professional knife maker I have seen. great work mate. Hope to own one of these soon!
Thanks very much mate!
Super clean blade, sir. And that griddle kydex heater is an awesome tip! I usually make folders, but I'll be keeping that in mind for the occasional fixed blades I make.
Thanks mate, glad you like my work!
The only knife I use, is the one on my multitool. Now having seen your video, am just looking at knives from a whole new perspective. They are gorgeous. And you my friend are an artist in what you do!! God bless!!
+sidheart19 Thanks very much mate!
What attention to detail, craftsmenship and individuality...love the design. i want one
Thanks very much Tom!
Happy to see a professional like you using a Lansky to sharpen your knives!
It's a very decent system, especially for the price!
Watching this after watching the Infantry knife and although there's only a year between them it's amazing to see the different processes being use between the two knives. I know you are even further ahead with how you do things now but one thing is obvious and that is consistently beautiful and I am sure practical knives, keep at it Aaron. One day I will place an order, one day my friend.
Thanks very much for the kind words Chris!
What an artist, what a knife, what a workshop. Beautiful
Thanks very much!
This is the cleanest shop ever! I am amazed
+Dimitris Loufakis thanks mate!
Since I found your channel, I have been watching nothing else. Absolutely great craftsmanship and great videography. Much obliged!
Thanks mate, really glad you like the videos!
Man, your workshop has advanced so much since some of your earlier videos. Nice video.
+Charles Batkin Thanks Charles!
Magnificent knife. Amazing precision throughout the build process.
Thanks very much Glen!
You say thanks for watching!
What I say is what a privilege to watch you!
Utter perfection in everything a real pleasure to watch a real master at work?
Also see good to see people such as yourself working to incredibly high standards.
What an example to the young
If I may be so bold Sir may I ask where you learn the art of hand made knives.
A truly exceptional video please think this it was worth the 4 days editing for people like me.
Many many thanks once again
The way the knife clipped into the holster at the end!
You won't believe it but my hackles stood up !!!
Thanks for the kind words Mark! Really glad you liked the video! I am mostly self-taught in regards to knifemaking, the internet is full of great resources for learning!
Gough, thank you so much for all of your videos. I'm starting off as a knife maker myself and you are one of my biggest inspiration on RUclips.
Thanks very much mate!
There is a reason you have so many subscribers, you do great work and make equally good videos. You certainly provide a lot of information that most other's don't. I didn't realize that you were Canadian until I saw the King brand saw.
Thank you for not over dubbing with some music, it helps some of us to maintain concentration when watching, to really follow what you are doing. Also you will never find a style of music that everyone will like anyway and then the copywright...
Thanks mate! Very glad you like my work and the videos!
Your setup is super organized and well thought out. Beauty knives too
Thanks very much mate!
Just found you on Instagram, holy crap! The craftsmanship... And you cut paper like butter!
+Conrad Designs Thanks mate! Glad you like the video and the knives!
I've now watched this several times. everything about the whole process is impressive.
Thanks! Very glad you liked it!
Definitely a labor of love . I found this uniquely fascinating
Is this what you Aerospace professional level??? Damn everything is so clean and tight and precise. Love it.
+RomanDutch haha thanks mate!
You are the reason I started making knifes, was wondering how to bevel it without a any machines, saw your tutorial on making a filing jig, it’s about 3 years ago still using the same jig, just takes me about 12 hours to bevel it cause I have ocd and the plunge lines has other ideas 🤣, but thanks mate! I am using M390 and Elmax for mine
that's a work of art right there. You and walter sorrells make some amazing stuff.
+Snakeprophet Thanks very much mate!
Real artistry I was mesmerized by the entire process
Thanks Samuel!
Aaron was the first knife making channel I watched on RUclips.
Now I’m well on my way to finishing my first knife.
👍🇬🇧🤍🇦🇺🙏
Nice work mate! Best of luck with your knife!
Gough Custom
Thanks Aaron.
And please post more videos 👍🇬🇧🇦🇺👍
Phenomenal craftsmanship, technique and procedures. Very impressive!
+62shalaka Thanks very much! Glad you liked the video!
I happened upon this video randomly. It’s my first time ever seeing such a comprehensive exhibition of the making of a custom knife. Every second of this video was edifying and worth watching; I learned SO MUCH! Even about the kydex sheathmaking.
I don’t currently own any custom knives, unless you count a Boye Basic 3 Cobalt, which incidentally is my most expensive knife. But this video makes me want to try making knives myself. The problem of course is that I don’t have access to tens of thousands of dollars worth of machinery for doing it.
I will be visiting your website to see what’s around and how much it costs. (I’m not a rich knife buyer but I’m known to splurge now and then.)
Finally, I am extremely impressed with how thorough you are, not just about the knifemaking, but even the info you provided with this video. Keep up the great work!
Thanks again mate! I have some tutorials on my channel that show how you can get into basic knifemaking for well under $200! Lots of manual labor involved though! :)
I just love the simplicity design of this knife.
Thanks very much Sid!
Wow, you've come a long way since I watched your video about how to sharpen a knife using the Lansky system. I still use that video as a reference when anyone asks me about sharpening.
Hey Tony! I used the Lansky in this video, but it's not a part of my current process, i just takes too long given that I'm making more knives these days! If you check out my newer videos you'll see the custom powered sharpening system that I built!
pure pleasure to watch professionals at work
justfunk88 Thanks mate!
I love how clean your shop is, that is awesome.
The buckets help, but ultimately the shop is clean because I'm always vacuuming and tidying and cleaning!
I grew up in the Auto-body/Mechanic business. My Dad always said having a clean shop is a direct reflection of the type of work you do. If you have a dirty sloppy shop, then you are more than likely to do sloppy lazy work. Keep up the great work!
I thoroughly agree with your Dad on this one! Thanks mate!
