At my LCS the price difference between current and backdate eagles is nominal. I always go with backdate, and i prefer the Type 1.
I can recall in the 1990s that coin shops handled Silver Eagles just like silver rounds. Many had finger prints and toning behind the display case. Spot silver was about $4.00 per ounce, silver rounds were 0.80 cents over spot. and Silver Eagles were $1.00 over spot. I remember buying rolls of 1996 Silver Eagles for $6.75 per coin. How times have changed.
You can find the type 1's all over the place, online and at an LCS. Now they may become more scarce due to people hoarding/stacking. I dont believe they are being melted. I personally love the type 1's. Just has a better look to me.
And type 1s have one more reed than type 2🤣🤣🤣
The Mint produced millions of the Type 1 a year, so there's no reason for it to be difficult to get. I really dislike that "security feature" on the type 2; silly design.
APMEX emailed me last Thursday, March 21, 2024, stating they would pay $1.75 over the silver spot if I sold to them. Previously APMEX offered me $0.20 below the silver spot price. Thanks, SW, for the video.
That's good news. Indicates more buyers and fewer sellers finally.
@@swilliams937everything I’ve heard says exactly opposite. Everyone selling and not many buying.
Less than spot for ASE? What has the world come to?
You mean below spot for silver eagles??
HI Wolvie . This is Interesting info . I am
seeing the premium is higher on the Type 1 :-))
Where at? Have you checked at a LCS? Mine at least 3 are all cheaper on the Type 1. Thanks Rocky!
@@SilverWolverine95 Check with BOLD :-))
I have a renewed appreciation for the type 1s. I prefer those as well. Great video sir.
Hi Sal! I feel like I have bumped into a friend at the local market.
Good day, my friend.
I'll always love the type1 better, just me,last week I bought some type1 eagles for 32$ but I have seen the prices up to 45$,great video.
A month ago I bought back date eagles for 26.00 each.
Bought a 1987 ASE the other week for spot + $5 + tax CA
You did good.
Prefer Type 1 over Type 2.
I own thousands of 1986-2019 ASEs....Ive sold backdates lately to a few folks lookin, but in volumes of 1-20 maybe, 20 tubes all in the last 3 months of back dates... I sold them at spot plus 47-$9 with as a premium charged, they paid, all were BU Blast White... I only own a 100+ to 250 ASEs after yr 2019, of each year 2020 -21-22-23-24's... We were out today in Connecticut in an LCS today as a seller brought in a MonsterBox of 2015's... The LCS owner paid him by check >$14.500, that would be $28.75 per. I kno the LCS will sell it for about $1500 more as a MB, than the $14,500 next week if asked. The seller was happy enough, he made a point, AND said in 2015 he paid $19 per ASE, being $9,500 for that MB...He also said he has a few dozen MBs still & is Gold heavy... The seller looked age 25 to me but I'm 66 so he may have been 40?
Are you crazy
Thanks for your story, Mr. Dubois. Sounds like you've got it wired.
@@alienal8278 Crazy, why?>> By 2019 my stacks were back strong. In 2012 I bought 64 acres in VERMONT with a bit of my precious metals. My early silver was all well under 7-9 usd per toz.. Often at $5usd per. Gold was bought often at 200-450/ toz. I've culled my stack to where I want it, MANY TIMES, if I ever use it again or to pass on down, or if real SHTF?>< IDK.. Nope, NOT CRAZY, LOL smart maybe!! I am jus a life long collector & of way more than jus Silver & Gold bullion, as I am a picker for many clients in many genres of smalls in antiquities, its in my blood since a a paperboy in 1968 collecting change for my newspaper delivery. 66 years old, retired in 2019 at age 59. I love Type I Reverse Proof Eagles!
How can they be (forced-out) lol crazy I never heard this nonsense
Good Question....
My guess would be the design change
Good stuff SW. Definitely my favorite coin to collect. I will keep an eye on this now.
That is just ridiculous. I haven't heard that one. There are more sellers than buyers right now. I hate that there is so much fake news being pushed in the community. ASE's have been so mass produced -- no shortage.
I prefer the Type 1 over the Type 2, if the Price Is Right! 😊
Seems the first place to check is at your LCS before online at least that way you get the chance to see the coin before you buy and hopefully you’ll find a coin you’re satisfied buying.
Thanks for the info.
Like # 1. I see a slightly higher premium on the type 1, but still readily available. The type 1 just looks a lot better than the type 2. The details on the type 2 are just bland compared to the type 1.The price on the current issue is always going to be higher for a year.
Thank you!
I like the type 2 silver eagles but I love the type 1. I just think it's a better design.
I've been buying graded type ones silver eagles. I like the proof coins the best.
Me too,got every proof type1,except 2009 when they didn't come out with a proof, love the look.
As someone who owns a complete set of graded eagles up until 2018, I can tell you that with a few exceptions, That it's not worth collecting slabbed eagles unless they are MS 70. A MS 69 bullion eagle will not fetch much more than a raw BU bullion ASE unless it's one of the low mintage years. Just advice from an old Stacker.
I'm the same way an ms 69 eagle is about the same as a raw,I do have 1 1996 eagle that is a 69 and about 11 proofs that are ms 70 and a few 70 graded reverse proofs and enhanced proofs.
Also I only buy NGC or PCGS graded eagles and send any raw coins to NGC,I've only ever sent 2 1996 eagles for grading and one came back 69 and the other 68,still have 3 more raw 96's but I don't know if I'll try again, thought I picked out the best 2 and out of the 5 and no milk spots.
@@mikesemones8333 It's pretty hard to get a 70 on a 96 ASE. My best 96 is a MS 69.
I love the numbers you provide. It gives you more credibility than a large number of silver content creators.
Thank you!
Hey hey SW. If the price is right, Type 1 or 2, I'll buy to include culls. My LCS still sales the ASE with the market premium.
Thank You sir
I would stack American Eagles, but I've never found a time when the price was right compared to other options.
Type 1 is my favorite!
Thank you for this very informative video. Between 1988 and 1996 i was buying a lot of 40% and 90% silver. I still have most of it. I also seem to have over 50 1996 silver eagles. It seems like i paid $6 each for those. They are in 2 tubes and some loose ones. Maybe i should put them all in capsules. There's a few other dates also. Some 1990s i think.
yeah $1996 Silver Eagles sell for minimum $45 (usually) but in MS70 its Many Thousands..
@SilverWolverine95 what do you think i should do? I may sell a few and buy more silver. I don't even know who i would show them to. There's a coin shop i trust. It's easy just to do nothing.
Sell some and buy some gold @@ronbell3986
Thanks for sharing 😊
Can’t stand the type 2 eagle. I just won’t buy a roll of those things. It’s sad that they changed the design.
The cheapest I can find for random high quality BU type 1s today are $30.28 each through Great Lakes Coin and Jewelry in Mentor, Ohio. That's a check price.
My apologies. It could be either Type 1 or Type 2 if ordered online.
Still a pretty good deal right now.
I prefer the original type 1 ASEs as well. However, I will buy whichever year I can get the best price on 👍
Only America could chose to make a dull coin with a b.s. securery feature. Shows no pride. Type 1 all day long if i have a choice. Walking Liberty doesn't do anything for me. Britannia and Maple Leaf are gorgeous.
I love toned Eagles! I have a sealed roll of 2024's!! Let me know
Got them at LCS,$32- might get few more tubes Monday
How do you chase out type 1 they made literally tons of these that's just crazy.
There is only about 2 American silver eagles ever minted for every man, woman and child in the USA. It is amazing if you consider one day everyone will want a few.
If that happened... yeah that would be amazing lol
I try to buy five every week or 10 to 20 a month alternating between type one and two. Seems like "good" looking type ones are more $ than type 2. But you can find type ones cheaper than new ones albeit slightly worn...
As predicted. Thanks.
What was predicted? Just curious
@@SilverWolverine95 That type 1's would be bought out and hoarded because of possible tracking methods supposedly being used with the type 2's. I heard this opinion from a couple of channels last year. Their opinion also claimed that T1's would eventually carry an extra premium because of such. I didn't think much of it then, but am hearing it again now. A new content creator called "TedSpeaks" has just claimed this last night. 🤷♂️
Always enjoy your channel.
My guy is now selling 2024 for +$4.50 oz and backdate mint tubes for +$4oz. He only sells full tubes, same date, blast white, the price did go up a week ago 50 cents on both groups...
I do not think there will be that much difference between the two. Sure, certain dates may carry more value but that's about all the difference you will see.
Back dates better design, it was bound to happen.
I just subscribed to your channel. Thanks for the information on ASE s , I've got a dozen of them, I paid 37 dollars for the last one. A 2024. They are a beautiful coin and I'll be looking for the older ones. Thanks for sharing and have a Great Day.
Thank you!
Classic Coke all the way! The new Coke sucks!
I like Pepsi lol
Great ASE video.
I bought a 2015 Philadelphia American Silver Eagles back in 2016 and I was told and I checked on this also that in 2015 Philadelphia only minted 79,460 and then I hear that the West point mint was also making them and they were hitting Phila. to also make them for them but no mint mark was on them so you can't tell which one was minted at Phila. or which one was minted at West point because neither one had a mint mark so when you have a 2015 you don't know whether it was made at Phila. or made at West Point that should be taken to court because that is a very low mintage for the Phila. Mint and how are you suppose to tell where your coin was made. Something isn't right here. Could you let me know what you think about this Thank You.
He had to send the monster box with a strap denoting that it came from the Philadelphia mint, if the strap was broke there’s no way to tell that it came from Philadelphia.👍
I have a 2017 from each of the mints and I've also heard that the only way to know the mint mark is the unopened strap on a monster box.
Big like number 333!
Seems like there are too many Type One's for any kind of scarcity to develop anytime soon. Like yourself, I don't believe they are being melted. I would not pay extra premium for one over the other. Just silver to me. Thanks for the video!
ASE type 1’s are my #1 if the price is right-proofs in either type 1 or 2 is koo too but imo I stack only Eagles🪙 gold/silver/platinum🪙 jus what I like to pick up for the long haul, great topic SW👍🏼
Thank you
It's all very interesting since I am a collector and not a stacker.
I started a MS-69 set of ASE’s back in the day and now it pains me to have to keep going with the type 2 ASE’s.
They will be the only type 2’s that I will buy. Now I buy Maples, Britannias and I still get the type 1’s.
IMO if they weren’t silver, they would have squash that design. But I guess we have to wait 25 years to find out, hopefully I’m around long enough to see it happen 😁. 👍
Don't! The mintage numbers are too high! You are in for a shock when you resell modern MS 69's.
@@richardmetcalf2346 oh I know, but I started it almost 40yrs ago and now I’m stuck in the quicksand. The weird thing about it is that I might still be doing it after I retire, even though I’ll stop-stacking. Hopefully I’ll find a family member or a friend that’s interested in coins and give it to them. But thank you anyway. 🙏
I have only seen the type 2 once at the lcs, they always have the original
I got a tube of 2024 ASE'S last week delivered for $4 over spot ($26.95 each) A fe weeks earlier I got a half tube of 2015 ASE'S for $3.50 over spot..
To me the ASE will always be the type 1 and it will be the only one I stack in mass. The new type 2 design I’ll leave for the new kids to pick up, just not for me. I did get the 2021 bullion, proof and reverse proof type 2 just to have one but that’s it.
This Type 1 v 2 madness is hype to increase premiums. Type 1’s are more readily available and usually $1 less per locally. Just stack whatever you get for the best price folks.
Yup.. I find the same thing.
I just bought a certified in small case 2010 silver eagle for $38.00 yesterday.
I know a lot of hype on the missing reed type 2 ASES has spooked a lot people thinking maybe nefarious reason for the missing read, blah blah honeywell connection blah blah blah. Who really knows and they sure are not gonna come clean on why such a simple reed missing is security feature.
Right now I’m putting together a set of the Engelhard prospector rounds.
The 1983 will set you back 100.
@@SirAlford have you looked at the 85 fractional pieces? 💰
@@hoopie_304 I have and not have gone that deep yet.....
Last fall I picked up a sealed tube of 1989 ASE for $595.
There may be millions and millions of these silver eagle coins around but guess what people when the people of the United States government want your silver they will pay you whatever they have to to take your silver for their needs. Silver is being depleted right now as we speak there is not much around above ground keep that in mind for the price it's supposed to skyrocket and I agree it will!! Hang on to your silver!
Inconceivable as to HOW they could be 'forced out of existence'. Does a Blackhawk land on your lawn and stormtroopers raid your house?
I'm not stacking, just working on my Intercept Shield book, and still need 19 of the Type 1s.
LOL That's good Haha
The reason type 1 AEs are being purchased is because there is some evidence Type 2 AEs are trackable by the government . The government may know where your silver is.
I need Proof. What is "some evidence"?
You gotta love conspiracy types. Just tune out the noise.

I like Eagles, but nothing compares to 90% silver in my opinion. Just holding a Mercury Dime, a Walking Liberty or a Franklin half wondering how many people paid for something with it back when America was a far better country. There is going to be a run on silver, its going to happen...and 90% silver will be the first to go.
I just can't bring myself to spend the money on 90% when I can get the pure.
Hi Wolv. I now buy only one bullion ASE a year to add to my collection. I also add one of each of the premium ASEs from the Mint. No more stacking for weight for me. I'm lean and mean. And, of course... *WINNING!*
LOLOLOL
It seems to me that this is a period of manufactured scarcity. I don't think it'll be long before silver jumps. This economy is fubar.
I prefer type 1 ASEs. I paid $42 for a bullion 1993 recently. I was OK with the premium because it was in good condition. A coin community member will turn it into ring that will marry my favorite coin with the best day of my life - the day I got married in 1993. No one will take my ring or my ASEs from me. No one!
i know where the type 1 eagles are right now for 29 bucks as of tuesday. i grabbed a couple of those and a couple morgan dollar design 10z bars. love both of them.
I would rather buy the type 1 silver eagles.
I prefer and buy Maples over ASE in any case. I will pick up backdate type 1 eagles at a reduced premium. I definitely wont pay higher premiums for any Eagles, especially the type 2, they are just plain ugly imho.
Aydin coins have backdate eagles for a good price
Type 2 is garbage.
See so many stepping over dollars to pick up nickels. Right now is the time to be buying whichever “Type” they are. Either one will be far more unobtainable soon. 🇺🇸🚀
did you hear the type 2 have a tracker in them so when the dollar goes tits up the government can track Werther all the silver is.
Where is the proof?
