    I left a review similar to this on Amazon but for some reason amazon wont post it, probably because its a bit of a negative review. I bought this tripod, and Im in two minds whether I should return it or just accept it for what it is until I save up for something better. Just don't expect great fluid starting and stopping when panning, the lack of adjustment on the pan head really limits it use for professional work, however for the price it not bad and I guess with some practice you could probably get some smooth shots out of it. I found that I can add friction with my fingers to the base on the fluid head, its not an ideal solution though.

      Thanks so much! The one thing to remember for a video tripod is to consider how you'll use it before you choose- if you hope for really smooth pans and tilts, there are better options... this is not bad, but for a few hundred more you can get something like the iFootage K7 or TERIS TCE-CF that will give you better control over counterbalance, resistance and overall a better, more professional control over camera movement. If you're on a very tight budget, this Cayer or a similar one will definitely be a LOT better than a photo style tripod, but I'd say don't rush into it

      @@ScottDumas What I need a video tripod for is doing commercials. Have you heard about the 3 Legged Thing Mike Carbon Fiber Tripod with Cine A fluid head? I heard that one is really good. I'm not looking into spending thousands of dollars, I just needs something that is great but reasonable.

    • @ScottDumas

      @@wonderfulcreationsla3062 3 legged thing tripods are definitely nice, although I'm not sure about their fluid head specifically. It does depend a little on which camera you're using and which quick release plate system you're using, but I think the TERIS TCE-CF or TS-N6 are absolutely incredible tripods for around the same price as the 3LT one you mentioned. Same level as tripods that cost thousands, but a lot cheaper. I have 3 TERIS tripods total :) The iFootage TC9 tripod legs with their K7 head is also an incredible choice if you want tube style legs. I've never tried the 3LT but could highly recommend these others for the price.

    Hi Scott. That looks good value. It's similar to some other designs. The 'weak' point is the head and maybe spending a bit more on that part would be worthwhile, but on the other hand it's a lightweight unit and that can trump everything else if one has to carry it very far and as you say it's a good step up if starting out. BobUK.

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  4 года назад +1

      Yeah there are a lot in this price range with nearly identical designs haha. I actually have another that's a bit more compact but there still hasn't been anything significantly "better" so I guess it's just dependent on prices and availablity wherever you're located.I've heard some people say the price for this is much higher where they are. Definitely worth a step up to a good head if you'll be using it regularly but this is super handy for sliders or flat mounting in my case. Thanks for watching! : )

    I'm pretty shocked... Got one from your link but the newer model (head design) Cayer BF30L 72 Pouces. Same load capacity, half the price bc of aluminium legs instead of carbon. Really ?
    Half price is an option for a studio solution, think carbon legs are for VIP, exclusive Bohemian Club members, guys with motorhomes, living on the roads. So price... 127 € (Guess what, made in China, German distribution in Europe). They sent you the carbon legs bc they surely make some visual impact, but reinforced aluminium is there too at discount.

    I have a manfrotto element and want to change the ball head to a fluid head. Would this head fit correctly on it ?

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  3 года назад

      It should, since it has a flat base... but it might be a little tricky to get it level for level pans. That't the benefit of the bowl style design, or a tripod with a similar function to level out the head easily.

  • @rockjano
    @rockjano 5 лет назад

    How do you think this head compares to a Manfrotto 500?? I also Use a Manfrotto 502 but thet is more expensive and that can be friction adjusted pan and tilt but the Manfrotto 500 is not. I thinking about buying a strong Sirui tripod with another M502 or this one. It seems not very sturdy when it is fully opened a bit worry about that.

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  5 лет назад +1

      Honestly I suspect the Manfrotto will do a bit better, and I hate to say that because I really don't like Manfrotto products haha. They just have more experience, money and production which gives them the leg up. The lack of drag on the pan axis is what bothers me the most about this Cayer head but physically it's pretty solid and when you use the "drag" on the tilt axis you get pretty smooth performance. I wouldn't use it fully open, so the looseness (semi-low counterbalance) doesn't bother me. I actually went through a few Manfrotto heads even including their Nitro N8, and ultimately decided this Cayer works well enough for me unless I want to spend more money. If you want to save money, I'd go for Cayer comfortably while understanding its drawbacks, but if you do go for Manfrotto the 502 will probably be a better value. If compact is what you're after, the iFootage Komodo K5 is incredible as well and uses manfrotto style plates.
      Honestly- My #1 recommendation by far would be to skip all this and grab a Teris TCE if you can. Around $500-600 for the legs and head but you'll get miles more out of it :)

    • @rockjano
      @rockjano 5 лет назад

      @@ScottDumas Thanks I did not know about the Teris SOmething like that probably: www.ebay.com/itm/Trix-TERis-V8T-PLUS-Heavy-Carbon-Fibre-Video-Camera-Tripod-Kit-Fluid-Head/173966184890?hash=item28813151ba:g:A20AAOSwbyVdLT5L. seems great. And heavy :-(
      My problem is i really don't want to carry a very heavy tripod. I use Lumix cams GX85, G85 and G9, with small lenses so the. weight of the cam is not a problem. I really like the Manfrotto 502 it has friction adjustment for tilt and also for pan and it really works. I loose it up for wide angel lenses and tighten it for tele optics and it does make a difference. And all these Chinese cheap or not so cheap video heads are just not able to do that. Or tghey can but than it cost a lot more than Manfrotto.
      I have a manfrotto old alu tripod 055 and also a Sirui carbon tripod 3205X which is just great. It might would be better to buy another Sirui carbon tripod and a Manfrotto 502. What I will not have like this is levelling half globe system but I can adjust the legs and set the cam to horizontal, I really used to do it, not really a problem. This Cayer looks good on paper but it might not be the best long term investment probably difficult to sell it since it has no name like Sirui or Manfrotto... hard decision. Thanks a lot!!!

    well compared to the price, I guess it's quite good, well for video it's probably better than my Manfrotto befree.

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  5 лет назад +2

      Haha yeah sometimes the best is just what's easiest to bring along (and this won't be it in those cases). The befree is definitely a great little tripod as well for the money, but for video-focused people I'd say this is better than the Manfrotto choices in my personal experience. At the very least, it's nearly on the same level for much cheaper :)

    • @DimusTech
      @DimusTech 5 лет назад

      @@ScottDumas Yeah I kind of liked what you showed here, I guess if I'll move one day to some place with a "studio" I'll get myself a nice video tripod or at least a video head (or even some motorized solution) for nice pan and tilt on products, otherwise I don't shoot that much outside with the DSLR, for those kinds of trips its the GoPro (which in this trip came super in handy when we were informed that in some place that we went to theres an Omega that we can do (when there's a cable between 2 points, and you sort of swing on it with special equipment))
      I just wonder, what causes the drag in those types of tripods, it's the fluid inside? that's why they are usually called fluid heads?

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  5 лет назад +2

      @@DimusTech Fluid heads are usually best with actual fluid inside to smooth the movements, although the "drag" on the tilt with this is most likely just friction based since it's not a dedicated "drag" setting- therefore it's terrible on the pan axis but better on the tilt, so maybe there is some sort of fluid or lubrication in there after all...
      But yeah- a higher end head will have proper fluid drag built into the pan and tilt axes and you can often tighten it either continuously or in steps to get how much resistance you want which helps fight the imperfections of your hand's movements. The counterbalance is separate from that but holds the camera in place at any angle when you tilt it without locking, so when you want to come to a stop at any angle, you don't have to fight gravity and can get a nice smooth finish to your movement.

    • @DimusTech
      @DimusTech 5 лет назад

      @@ScottDumas I understood you, but I guess I need to try and move such a head myself to better understand it... Hi Scott, great video! Very helpful 🙏🏼 Regarding the Pan I’ve got a question. I’m filming action with a 300mm or sometimes with 600mm and the thing I value the most is a smooth start and finish of every move. With that focal length, any minor resistance become a jump in the shot.
    Now that you’ve had that head/tripod in your hand, how ‘resistant’ would you say this head is right at the start of any pan? How smooth it is basically 😀 and, any any opinions about the little Manfrotto 290 comparing to this one?
    Thanks! I’d appreciate any comments on this

    • @ScottDumas
      @ScottDumas  2 года назад +1

      This would probably be very similar to the Manfrotto... a more expensive video head would help out better with the true fluid resistance... TERIS make great products for the price and I think you'd have a much easier time getting it dialed in just right to get a smooth start and stop without backlash. That or another type of head made specifically for long lenses like for birds/wildlife, although I don't know as much about those.
