Khorne recently stood up, swung his sword once, took out/converted an entire imperial fleet while turning the warp travel lights out for half the imperium, and inflicting the MURDER CURSE to untold millions... All of that, just because he thought his daemon Primarch Angron was being a really good boy and deserved a treat.

About nurgle loving you, its best shown in the story of one of his kids, one of his lowest ranked, was sitting on his shoulder while he cooked a disease in a cauldron, he was cooking the PERFECT disease. The little demon fell in, and realized, it tasted AMAZING. So he drank it, all of it, and it evolved him into the top rank nurgle demon. He realized, he wasted nurgles perfect disease, and felt like a failure, however, nurgle felt pride in his son, for eating all his food, for showing how perfect the disease was, and for growing into a beautiful man (by nurgle standards)! 1. Khorne also actually has a weird level of integrity. Like, for a chaos god that loves murder he's weirdly honorable and despises it when people , especially his own followers, use cheap tactics, like magic in his eyes or attacking a foe from behind when they're not paying attention, or when they don't keep their word.
His followers are also empowered with, essentially, a blood rage that makes their potential strength virtually infinite, but at the constant risk of losing their sanity.
Khorne doesn't care which way tho as long as you keep fighting in his name.
    2. Tzeentch is implied to know *everything* and is actively just trying to keep things interesting for himself. Hell, he'll sometimes either screw over or empower his own followers depending entirely on his mood at the time.
Still his followers put up with it cause, again, he knows *everything* and on the rare chance he gives a straight answer, or as close as possible, it could be invaluable.
    3. Nurgle, despite hating Tzeentch and being all about stagnation and decay, does seem to have a weird amount of consideration for "balance" , he knows that the ultimate plague has no meaning if there's nothing for it to infect. Which is why its speculated that he lets the goddess Isha stay in his realm by his cauldron for this exact reason. She tests the diseases, which she can cure herself of usually no problem, and whispers the cures to the physical world, *seemingly* when Nurgle isn't looking.
Also, Nurgle's followers weirdly don't die from the transformations they go through, in fact their life is extended if anything and they don't feel pain or rather they feel it as pleasure.. Also many of his Nurglings and other creations aren't even evil, they have the minds of puppies or children and just want to play. But due to their monstrous nature and the diseases they carry, they end up accidentally killing almost anything they come across.
Nurgle is also the chaos god that's the hardest to make mad. He's suprisingly chill and in a perpetually jolly mood. but God help you if you manage to make him lose his temper
    4. Slaneesh is excess in all forms in the sense that both she/he and their followers endlessly chase greater and greater pleasures and extremes like addicts.
The torture and pain only comes once their followers get to the point that nothing in the realm of normalcy can possinly sate their desires and so they endlessly fall further and further into depravity.

A better way to explain the other side to chaos's coin, is that no one not even the gods themselves know that they embody these ideals. The reason that they act this evil is because the galaxy is stuck in internal war. Also Nurgle isn't just the finality he is also the beginning (he is also nature incarnate). You will learn how the other gods were born when he covers the Necrons.

You hit the nail on the head when it comes to how violence influences the Chaos Gods. There's a lot of lore underpinning it, but suffice to say that the galaxy of Warhammer 40k has been SO enmeshed in war for SO long that the resulting negativity has heavily skewed the Warp.

    • @Halo2nothing11111
      @Halo2nothing11111 10 месяцев назад +4

Speaking as a Chaos fan, there is one major flaw in this reasoning: the Chaos gods are at least partially, if not mostly responsible for the state of unending war that the galaxy is currently in. They've been influencing life long before the Horus Heresy, or the Age of Strife, or even before humanity existed. I suppose you could make the argument that the way things have turned out was unintentional by Nurgle, Khorne, and Slaanesh, but Tzeentch? It's highly unlikely that he didn't have some inkling of what his meddling would unleash upon the galaxy.
The better explanation would simply be a war of escalation between the Emperor and the Chaos gods, a chess game that has progressively gotten more and more intense due to either side being unwilling to surrender, even at the risk of destroying the chess board. If that's the case, the Emperor is not only the biggest failure of the Galaxy, but also a complete moron if he really thought he could match the reflections of reality with violence. He was punching at a mirror with the intention of actually defeating his opponent.
TL;DR I guess is that the Chaos gods are still somewhat responsible for how evil they've become, because while we've most certainly been poking and prodding into the abyss, the abyss has been poking and prodding back.

    • @ryanedgerton1982
      @ryanedgerton1982 10 месяцев назад +5

@@Halo2nothing11111 -- Was trying to avoid spoiler territory, but...
There's one big flaw in your argument: the War in Heaven. Chaos wasn't around when the Necrons & C'tan fought the Old Ones, Eldar, and Krork (among others). It was that war, which was fought on a scope and intensity that the galaxy has literally never seen since, that did 90% of the work of turning the balanced and mild Realm of Souls into the chaotic and violent Warp. The eras in which each of the Chaos Gods was "born" just simply tipped over an already boiling pot, that's all.
Since Chaos isn't an innate and natural part of the cosmos (as so many would have you believe) -- since there was in fact a time where life flourished and the Warp was calm and non-hostile -- Emp's plan (while admittedly far fetched) is not without merit. Conquer the galaxy to have control. Use control to snuff out religion and superstition, decreasing Chaos' power. Take over the Webway to create a new home for humanity that Chaos cannot reach. Wait for the Dark Gods to starve to death, then step back out of the Webway to retake control of the galaxy and lead humanity into a bright and prosperous future. It's really not that bad of a plan, overall.

    • @Halo2nothing11111
      @Halo2nothing11111 10 месяцев назад +6

@@ryanedgerton1982 Unless it's been retconned recently, the Chaos gods are capable of influencing events before they're born.
There's still so many flaws in that plan that it's beyond far fetched. One, it assumes he does find ALL of humanity. That would mean he'd need to check every single corner of the galaxy, every single planet, moon, asteroid, space hulk, you name it. If he misses one underground colony on some irradiated and seemingly lifeless planet, you can bet that's what Chaos will survive off of and possibly even grow from. It also assumes that at sometime during the Age of Strife NO humans ever ventured and settled beyond the galaxy.
Two would be getting ALL of humanity into the webway. Even for the Emperor, convincing all of humanity to drop everything, leave their homes and move not just to a new one, but a new dimension would be beyond a monumental task. If we don't see open rebellion we'd certainly see desertion, people fleeing the Imperium to hide and wait out the migration.
Three, it assumes that Chaos cannot be influenced from the webway. Sure, the gods might not be able to whisper into the ears of mortals, but they don't need to. Chaos is influenced whether or not they receive worship, simply by emotions. They feed off of our griefs, our anger, our hopes, and our desires, respectfully. It wasn't any kind of worship that "birthed" Slaanesh or made it as powerful as it is. Who's to say those emotions can't still seep from the webway into the warp?
Four, it assumes that once humanity is gone Chaos won't just find a new source of sustenance. The Tau are, what, three thousand years old? It's possible, even likely there's another up and coming species out there, just as, if not more susceptible to the taint of Chaos. I suppose he could have planned for the Tyranids to come and wipe out the remainder of life in the galaxy, they do have a presence in the warp after all. Once again though, it relies on 100% accuracy, that the Tyranids would find and consume every sapient creature in the galaxy.
I think that it's more likely that once the Emperor convinces as much of humanity as he can to enter the webway (assuming the Heresy never happens), they never leave. Chaos manages to survive off smaller portions, and ironically without the Imperium as it's adversary the warp and therefore the galaxy becomes much more peaceful once again. Of course the Chaos gods being who they are weren't gonna let that happen, and the Emperor should have known that. There is no "starving out" the Chaos gods, he would have been better off trying to make peace with and reigning in their power and influence. Convince them that it was in the best interest of life, their food source, that a peaceful existence, while not as fun, is more sustainable. But he chose eternal conflict, which in turn has arguably made the Chaos gods more powerful.

Like, yeah, it's cool to make your own stories and battles and such, but it would be teally nice if they focused more on actually progressing the story a bit. I mean, has there been any major event since Cadia fell? I've been looking but I'm a bit out of the loop.
Anyway, I think I just want some proper story progression instead of glorified fanfiction.

@@josefsieffen18 I mean, we went decades with no plot progression at all. But Cadia fell in 7th edition. Starting in 8th edition, the galaxy was split in half, there are Primaris Marines, the chaos gods think the Emperor is ascending and at the very least he's empowering various human psykers (it might not be him but its implied to be him), codex compliant chapters are tactically reorganized to make each field company more versatile, the space dwarfs are back, Lion El'Jonson is back, the Octarius War is over (nids won), various other things.
Of course that kind of misses the point since its a wargame first and lore second. The lore is there to make the wargaming more fun, not to make the wargaming change every couple years to keep up with the newest plot points.

I think the main reason why Chaos is often seen as evil and bringing misery despite embodying good aspects as well, is because of how Chaos Gods think and function.
The Chaos Gods are constantly looking to create more of the aspects that they originally formed from. Doing this consumes energy, which then in return weakens them, so they have to get a good return on the energy that they invest. While honor, hope, contentment and joy would be something they could spread, violence, betrayal, disease and pain take a lot less effort and can be spread much further. Also, in the end of the day, none of them really care about humanity enough to be seen as "good".

A point of clarification that might be slightly more confusing at first, but I promise helps a lot of stuff just slot into place:
The Warp wasn't always the Warp.
Or rather, to be specific, it wasn't always spacehell; billions of years ago, it was known as the Realm of Souls, and was completely devoid of daemons. What happened to change that is an event known as The War in Heaven. What happened was that the setting's designated Precursor Race (the Old Ones) got into a colossal fuckoff war with the Ctan and Necrons, and started creating psychic servitor species to throw into the meat grinder when they got desperate. The Warp is more strongly disturbed by the thoughts and feelings of psykers, and you now had mass traumatic death of psykers across the entire galaxy all at once.
Part of the reason Khorne can still be Khorne despite any harm he suffers is because the chaos gods kind of are their associated concepts. Daemons are, in essence, patterns of thought come to life.
    Living ideas, if you will.

One pretty infamous inaccuracy Bricky puts forward in this video is in regards to Angron. It's not that he removed parts of his that didn't make him angry, but that the planet he landed on as an infant decided to use him as a gladiator slave. When he refused to fight, they put something called "the Butcher's Nails" in his head that cause immense pain when he feels anything that isn't anger. When he would later cover Angron on Adeptus Ridiculous (a podcast where he explains Warhammer 40k to his friend that knew nothing at the start of the series), he actually admitted to feeling bad about the way he simplified him here.

The nails were hard-wired into his brain to up his aggression.
When big Daddy Emperor finally found Angron, he could have removed the nails but chose not to. It’s a large part of the reason why Angron joined the rebellion against his father.

    2. Tzeentch is hope, and the foresight to see when someone is trying to cheat you, or screw you over.
    3. Nurgle is the cycle of death, life, and it's recurring cycle of rebirth. He also is the peace of mind that from the mightiest king to the lowliest peasant will all be the same.
    4. Slaanesh is the purest form of expression, in all forms. Specifically the expression of perfectionism.

So we mentioned in the stream that some of Bricky’s information is a bit out of date. A lot of the chaos marine stuff came from before Bricky really started getting deep, deep into 40k lore for his podcast. For instance, he says that Angron removed those parts of his brain himself. He did not. He was raised as a slave on a planet and forced into gladiatorial combat. Those things were put into his head to make it so that any feeling other than anger and bloodlust would cause him pain. This process actually took away the innate ability he had to take away other people’s pain.

The warps kinda like a dumping ground for all sentient beings in the galaxy's emotions and thoughts. The Galaxy in 40k is really tilted towards non stop violence and war, so the major negative emotions associated with the gods is really front and center. Khorne might be the god of honorable combat, loyalty to your brothers in arms, the thrill of competition, but also he's the doting dad of the concept of survival of the fittest, and "fuck that guy i want to kill him". Galaxy wide there's a lot more animals and beings out there killing each other just to eat and survive than there are standing shoulder to shoulder to defend their homes. Now expand that kinda emotional tint in the warp across the scale of countless wars involving billions of sentient beings shooting and stabbing each other it's not a shock that Khorne went full bloodlust mode, as that's the most common emotion relevant to his domain. Same goes with all the other gods, the big negatives win out and really tilt their nature (not that the gods arent kinda just dicks on their own)

Khorne is currently the strongest because the galaxy is in a team death match but each of the gods has been the “strongest” at one point or another and it generally fluctuate. It also helps that if one gets too powerful the others will 3v1 them which famously happened to tzentch when he was the strongest.

Angron actually didn't remove his ability to feel anything but anger, before the Emperor found him, the tyrannical rulers of his homeworld put him in a gladiator pit and tried to get him to kill a gladiator who essentially raised him, and as punishment for not killing said dude, the rulers forcibly put a device known as "The Butcher's Nails" into Angron's head, causing him to not be able to feel any positive emotions.
And then, Angron led a revolution, and as he and his found family of gladiators were about to make their last stand, where they knew they would be killed and decided it was best to die together, and as Angron had made peace with that. The Emperor intentionally teleported only Angron onto his space vessel, leaving Angron's family to die brutally.
Angron's lore is sad as hell.
Like, I may have left out crucial parts, but thats essentially the summary, Angron got fucked over mentally in an inconceivable degree, hell, the Butcher's Nails also cut off a neat ability he had due to being a Primarch which allowed him to take the pain of others unto himself through touch, causing them to not suffer as they died while he felt their pain, and that got cut off because of the butcher's nails.

The thing with Chaos is, that in the end the gods are sentient beings and as sentient beings locked in eternal war against each other, the one thing they crave is power. And the more extreme their worship is the more power they get.
And so they drive their followers behavior to that extreme.
So honor in combat becomes mindless slaughter.
Hope and change becomes scheming and walking over fields of corpses to reach your goals.
Pleasure and joy becomes tortute-murder-sex and gluttony.
The calmness of knowing your end and accepting it becomes embracing sickness and being a mindless spreader of plague.

All it takes is one guy who doesn't want to give in to moderation or let their insecurities run wild with what they should do, and the gods will be right there to whisper in their ear. It's not even a quick jump to horror either, just small baby steps. But chaos has the time and patience to know when to give the smallest nudge in the wrong direction.

What Bricky missed about the Chaos Gods is that they always take things to the Extreme. And if your get on their train, either of the four or them all united, there are no breaks.
A painter will find pleasure in their paintings until they don't, and that is when they go out and kill the neighborhood to paint with their bodily fluids to get to the next level.
There is no such thing as a Moderate Chaos worshiper... it is not even a slippery slope, it is jumping into a hole. Sooner or later you will hit the bottom, there is only different levels of elevation from the bottom before that.

I believe that the reason all of the chaos models embody the messed up aspects of the chaos gods is because, as warhammer is a war game, what we see on the table top are the armies of the gods, the soilders, the demons who are best suited for fightibg against the horrors of the 40k universe. There are probably demons who embody the better sides of the chaos gods, but they don’t really have a reason to show up as much in the war efforts so they just kinda blend into the background. That and literally everything in the warhammer universe wants to fight against one another, so those violent and fucked up emotions and ideas manifest in the warp as a surge in the more violent and fucked up kinds of demons

19:52 - You got it. The Grimdark side of the gods is prevalent because it's a wargame. The way people first interacted with the lore is through a game where you need a reason for your little dudes to be fighting the other guy's little dudes.
Time is also not a factor in the Warp, so once Slaanesh was born (for example) s/he always existed. There was The War In Heaven (The Old Ones with the help of the Aeldari and the Krork versus The Necrons with the help**** of the C'tan) millions of years ago, so War has long been a constant of the galaxy.

Chaos TLDR: some of the first known species in the universe got into a war that destroyed most life in the universe, with the creators of most of the modern races (the old ones) having seeded those lifeforms as the war went on and this war was so devastating it made the warp incredibly negative, and since it is in essence the collective mindscape of life, it influenced races to act more war like due to the influence the first galactic scale war had on it, with most races seeded by the old ones being particularly influenced by the warp leading them to become more corrupt as time goes on, leading to 40K

It important to note that the Chaos gods are entities but concepts as well... all warp entities are like standing waves of emotional conceptual stuff that have gained enough momentum to almost carry themselves. Khorn gaining follower gets him more soldier and more influence true but it also gives him more of himself as a thing and in turn give the concept he represent/is more weight in the warp gaining him more influence in a "virtuous" loop.
They also feed into each other as much as they might hate that, More war, leads to more death and more suffering and more enemies making elaborate plans against each other. Disease and famine lead to war, suffering and more dealing and wealing and hope, on and on the action and domain of one god leading people's toughs and actions into the others in a perfect circle of CHAOS UNDIVIDED.

My head-canon is that chaos is inherently dangerous because each god values one concept to tge exclusion of all others in a manner that is detrimental to life in the materium.

Thing about the chaos gods is that they while what they represent might seem like it can be a good thing they will always want more of it because that makes them more powerful. The chaos gods will keep demanding more until their followers are pushed to such extremes that they seem evil and insane to everyone else.

i think the main reason why the chaos gods are more evil then good is because humans are more likely to act upon negative emotions then positive ones. as a crude example i would argue its easier to go up to a random person and make him punch you in the face compared to make him hug you (obviously without saying it) and so its a cursed circle, its easier to spread negative emotion which makes the gods strong which makes them spread more negative emotions etc

18:27 I figure the answer to this is kinda similar to how poison can actually be made from medicinal things.
In excess, anything that CURES can KILL.
Likewise, any one of those simple concepts, pushed into the realm of what is "Beyond The Pale", can lead to HORROR and MAYHEM.

I love this video, and the setting attached, Bricky boi did a great job. However, there is only one thing I want to correct/inform. Bricky is very up front that he doesn't know why the gods are more evil than good, so I'll explain for everyone as best as I can.
The Chaos gods, for lack of a better term, *are* the Warp. They are intimately bound to it, capable of unleashing nearly infinite control of it in the areas where their influence reigns. The reason for this is that they are made of the Warp, and yes I am being literal. The Chaos Gods are able to shape the warp because its essentially part of them.
But this is a double edged sword.
For as much power as they wield, they will forever be limited by being shaped of the Warp. After all, an exceptionally powerful Psyker can survive the Warp basically unscathed. Kaldor Draigo, one of the most powerful Space Marines ever, is just Doomguy, motherfucker lives in the Warp slaughtering demons daily because his willpower is THAT fucking strong.
And that being made of the warp is also why they suck: because humanity currently sucks. Most humans in 40k live violent, awful lives, and their every thought and feeling is made real in the warp. One hive world can bear trillions of people in Half its population centers on a bad day, can you imagine the amount of Fuel that gives the warp? And all of that fuel is angry, wishing and hoping for a better future, drowning in decay and filth and sickness, and reveling in any happiness or pleasure they can at any cost.
These thoughts, uncountable scores of humanity driving them, shape the morality and mood of the Gods, until the situation for Humanity improves the Gods are as stuck as humanity, made doubly ironic, because the Gods will seek to drive people to them by making that suffering worse because they can't stop, pushed by the consuming darkness of their power and food.

Chaos also generally goes to the most extreme version of what they embody, which is what makes them evil, they will always push the people under their influence further and further, be it the rage of khorn or the lust and feeling of slaanesh, it is never enough.

If anything, Alicia, I'm just really glad that you're enjoying 40k content in general. The lore is wild, so much crazy shit happens, and while all of it is pretty fucking horrifying, it's almost always as stupidly awesome as possible. It's like a 9-year-old boy learned about the _idea_ of space marines one day, then said to himself, "But what if they were all 9-feet-tall, had chainsaw swords, and some of them could use crazy space magic?"

Fun fact about Nurgle, if you look deeper into it he's technically the god of nature since everything has an end and we all must live through the process to meet that end. That and his Domain is a garden, Korn's is a Arena, Tzeentch is a maze, and Slanessh is a pleasure palace in the shape of the 7 levels of hell.

Yeah. I can understand wanting to focus on 40K instead of TW: Warhammer/Warhammer Fantasy, since the two are basically different universes with some similarities. I respect that decision.
If you ever get into it, I'd say keep this in mind:
    1. The chaos gods/daemon knowledge is basically the same, there is some differences in terms of backstories and different notable characters in those factions.
    2. When it comes to learning some stuff, lots of things are similar to earth, so it's basically a fantasy version of our world, with some different original elements (Like the Skaven, which plenty of people really want you to learn of given how they react in chat and how you're "The Rat Queen")

I love seeing someone new learn about something I'm passionate about. Also quick answer about the chaos god power thing different races have different strength souls, while one human soul might be like throwing a cup of water into the ocean it adds up when billions of humans die on the daily in 40k. not an exact science but while other races might have better souls chaos generally sees humans as the biggest bang for there buck.
