been a live aboard Yacht Owner ( debt free boat ) for over 40 yrs. , 1968 Camper and Nicholson ketch , German Frers Club Racing Sloop 1984 and Chris Craft Commander Sport Fisherman 1973 , all 38 ft. , i restored all of them to damn near '' Palm Beach '' , been a Master Painter/Body Man and Hot Rod builder for 50 yrs. ( now retired on Padre Island Texas at beach front RV Resort with Motor Coach , Mercedes Roadster Street Racer and car trailer LOL ) i leased space at Boat Yard in Rockport Texas the entire duration , My Yacht Service was NOT registered or INSURED , ran Pleasure Charters on my boats with NO Captains Lic. or Ins. , closed a customer Restoration Project with half the FUNDS up front in CASH and a HAND SHAKE !!! hahaha basically '' FULL PIRATE '' operational parameters hahaha TRY DOIN THAT NOW !!!! good luck to you young bucks that have enough balls to pull off a '' Resto '' im Selling my '' Toys '' next month and moving to THAILAND !!!!!!!
i think it depends on the boat. smaller boats use a lot of generic equipment. larger boats might have German diesel engines in which case, that will be expensive
That beautiful schooner at 1:50 with its booms bent all out of shape... brings a tear to my eye. Why do people leave their ships in marinas about to be pounded by a Cat4???
Totally agree.. latest trend from you tube channels have been making lost of people believe that they can fix whatever damage a salvage boat has.. have seen a few projects fail in terrible ways lately…
It's the same thing as the automotive industry. It used to be considered totaled if the damage value exceeded 50 percent. They raised it to 70 percent. These boats are not gonna be a good deal. Just fyi.
I often wonder what the deal is when you see 100’s of boats in a boat yard that never to move and don’t appear to have been touched in years. Are they abandoned? If so, can the yard claim a lien against them and eventually sell them? Would this be a way to find neglected boats for pennies on the dollar? Could there be a profit to be had in flipping these boats? What is your take on this?
@@ChasingLatitudes You don’t ever get all your money back with boats regardless. I think most people should know they’re going to spend more money fixing and simply owning a boat than they ever will get selling it. Renovating boats is never, ever a profitable business. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist and people do enjoy using the boat as they renovate it.
I don’t know what RUclips Kool-Aid you’re talking about …the blogs that I watch are people that spend months and months and months in a boat yard with blood, sweat and tears lol But also great video with lots of information that I didn’t know
Timely video and some choice terminology----- RUclips--- koolaid, insurance company-- blackholes. More, more, always up for some laughs!!!! Short straight simple warning here.
Do not believe the videos of people finding incredible deals on boats and restoring them for cheap. It's fairytale material. There are boats that can be restored for a lot less than people think but only if you are willing to do the labor. Tools become an expense but are well worth it if you plan on doing your own repairs. Parts can be found for older vessels or even fabricated for reasonable prices with due diligence. I am restoring a 1996 boat with a 1987 engine. I'm here to tell you it's not break out another thousand. It's more like break out another $100.00 and put in another 4 hrs of pain staking labor 😂. I love it though I sit back with a beer and watch a million videos on whatever I'm taking on then copy the guys that I know are doing it right.
Chris, You did a great job alerting us to the reality of buying, or trying to buy, a hurricane damaged boat. Thanks, FD

If you can't buy a boat in good running order you definitely can't afford to rebuild one. Marine parts are extremely expensive.
Not necessarily

Nah, by the time those get to that stage yes they can be had for cheap but the amount to repair them will exceed the final value
