  • On Novevember 27th, 2007 we visited Sterling Sound in New York City to document first-hand the all-analog mastering process. The process by which Mission of Burma's landmark recordings from the early 1980's were re-mastered. The process is old-fashioned. The gear is original. The vinyl is live cut.

Hmmm...never knew about the preview tape head before...does this explain why on some records if you play them really loud you sometimes hear a bit of the song before it starts?

No.. The preview is for the computer to aid the “spacing” in the cutting lathe.. To help make the best compromise.

Nah, not really. If you spend any length of time arguing about sonics and mastering and techy shit, your missing out on some good music. Good songs. Good performances. But go ahead and stare at your computer screen and waveforms all day and night. It's the modern day D&D! Leaves more music for me!!
