This was VERY helpful information. Two years ago I adopted a rescue dog from the pound that I thought was a German Shepherd, but turns out is a Malinois. She had been bred and literally dumped in a field. Her teats hung like flattened triangular flags that dropped across her belly. The vet said her puppies had been take from her way too soon, and this would affect her behavior. When I adopted her, what was left of her fur felt like skinny, sharp pine needles. She was completely emaciated and has since put on 40 pounds. You have helped me to understand so much about her various behaviors. She is loving, but very protective. Once someone is on the 'good' list, she'll relax. Otherwise, she puts herself between me and whatever she perceives as concerning. And then curls up with the kittens at the end of the day. I love this dog. It was just chance that I was the one who got to bring her home. Thank you!

My little guy was due to be put down the following day.... but I was told of him just in time. That was last July 18th, and it's been a real adventure. He had been terribly mistreated, beaten until his spirit was almost broken. He's partially blind and deaf and has only barked three times since I've had him. But, things are getting better as time goes by and he learns that not all people are mean and cruel.

We have a Belgian Malinois named NASH. Very active and very athletic... his biggest bonus is he loves people. He loves his home and family. Very smart... you don't fool him twice. He's a large dog but a very clean dog. Never pooped or peed in our home even at 8 weeks old. I'd say that's amazing.

I learned that my Bel Mal understood everything I explained to him. When I would explain something in great detail...about a situation ...it was incredible what he understood. I became very ill and I could not let him sleep in my bed any longer. I would tell him to get out and he would get right back in...and we would have this battle lol...So one day when I came home from the doctors I laid down on the floor face to face with him and explained to him about my illness and how I had to have my bed clean...and so on for nearly a 1/2 hour...he never got in the bed to sleep with me again. He did jump up to pounce on my chest when I stopped breathing one night. So what I learned from this experience is they do understand so much more then we will ever know. Take the time to calmly explain if your Bel Mal is not obeying.

@@benjaminfink8520 - Hi Benjamin, may be I did express myself in a way which could be misunderstood. I didn't mean that a dog must not sleep in it's owners bed just for the sake of the dog race Malinois. Nor do I mean that for the reason of an associated potential risk. It is just my principal personal philosophy that NO dog shall sleep in the bed at all. As well as no cat or any other animal. That's my fundamental understanding of a basic differentiation between an animal and a human. And it has something to do with hygene as well. I have been holding several dogs in my life and non of them slept in my bed nor was allowed to enter the first floor of my house nor to lick (kiss) over my faces. And I didn't allow them as well to jump on the sofa or to beg for food in the kitchen or from the dining table. And please don't get me wrong at all. I saw all of my dogs as family members and real best friends and I'm as well not a supporter of chained dogs living the whole year outside the house. However, I still see a differentiation and I'm not a fan of "humanilization" of them. But of course finally every dog owner has to find his own personal way how he wants to handle it.

My Belgian Malinois, when he was a pup, he was so, so tiny. They called him the "pet" of the litter, because he had the best temperament of all the pups even though both his parents are bite-work dogs. Then he grew up...he is larger than a German Sheperd and is pure bred Malinois. He still has the most amazing temperment and is so calm. He's got this beautiful gingerish fawn coat, and these deep auburn-brown eyes. I love my boy...

I will say this, go look at kennels like Blackjack Mals. All the dogs are supposedly purebred malinois. They say they are purebreds but they are mixed with their cousin breed WL German Shepherds for size larger heads Etc, not to be confused with show or pet line German Shepherds which really have been mutated due to popularity and overbreeding. Purebred Malinois tend to have very snippy conical muzzles. If your dog has a larger muzzle and head he likely has German Shepherd back in his line. Go look up Blackjack Malinois kennels and a stud dog named buddy. He's got the head and size of a working line German Shepherd and the body of a malinois. He's also noted for being an incredible personal protection dog with the coveted off switch which is rare for the Malinois and more common with the working line German shepherd. If you look up his pedigree and working dogs go back many generations and you will see a dog that looks just like a German Shepherd but is registered as a Belgian malinois. A lot of paper hanging goes on but it's really pointless. Knpv lines I believe are the best dogs because they care less about pedigrees and more about working ability so they will mix lines and breeds to create the most functional working dog and for ease call it a Malinois but they are actually X Malinois or X herders

I'm from Belgium, and we had a dog that was a mix between an Belgian Malinois and a Groenendael. I was 6 years of age, when dad came home, and told us there's is a black bird in the car and he couldn't catch it. So i, with my 2 sisters , went on for a bird hunt in te car and found the most adorable puppy in the world. He knew me as kid, as teenager and as an adult, He knew me and my 2 sisters, as puppy and the other sisters and brother from birth and he past away age 16. He also liked cats, who some of them got kittens and he always took care at them like if he was the father to lick them and putting them back in to the nest if they crawled around. Never ever he bit one of us 7 kids. For me he was more than my friend, he was my brother, and after all those years i still miss him dearly. Rather than burying him, i let the vet took him to the first pet crematorium (Pet crematorium was new at the time) in Belgium and cremated him so, he's is still with me @ home with his dog collar around the urn.

Not faze Eti yeah it’s awesome to watch the progression and to see a dog that can learn at such a high level but still is young enough to piss in your house lol. I’m teaching him everything myself. His dad was an army bred dog so his genetics are off the charts. He knows “protect”, “attack”, gives hugs, I tell him to jump in the tall field grass and crouch, and all the other basic commands (sit, stay, down, up). Still a puppy technicality. 4.5-5 months old.

I literally just rescued one of these dogs and her four emaciated tiny puppies from the side of the road. She was very loyal to her pups but both she and them were suffering from severe malnutrition and covered in mange. She wasnt in any way aggressive. I think she knew we was helping her. Even in her uncared for state she was a very elegant looking dog. I cant believe anyone would let any dogs get into such a bad condition and then callously dump them on the side of the road at night with the puppies running out in front of oncoming cars. Had myself and some other drivers not stopped then theyd 100% all been dead by the morning.

Excellent overview of the breed. Especially the focus on them being working dogs rather than pets.
If kept as pets....and Malinois also make good pets, they will need a lot of daily vigorous excercise. This breed lives to work. They need a purpose and thrive on reward. The owner needs to commit fully.
Mine ( Saba) was trained as a trailing/ tracking dog. She was primarily used to track down rhino poachers.
Her first successful trail from scent clue to arrest of a poacher was accomplished when she was only 16 months old!
A post of this achievement was briefly posted on my FB page on Christmas day 2014. Needless to say, it elicited 1.3million views...That was the beginning of an effective measure to help save rhino.
....Yeah, I'm super proud of her. Particularly the ground breaking recognition her ability promoted. This is now evident from the extensive use of dogs in this field.

Didn't know they could climb... walls, trees, fences, etc. until I saw my female Mal in action! Also didn't know they could play soccer so well... until I saw my girl bouncing a small ball up in the air and then catching it on the way down. And, also didn't know they can probably excavate an entire back yard in a couple hours... maybe even to China if given enough time. Oh, and did I mention, they are amazing twirlers and flippers (especially in mid-air). I am always so dumbstruck by these things, that I forget to get video of her performing them! Psst, she's had NO formal training... she just thinks these things up all by herself spontaneously... a VERY BUSY brain and a tireless body.

I wish people would reconsider when they say Malinois can’t live in homes with children. This is absolutely untrue, they can be amazing family dogs if trained and socialized properly. Making generalizations like this does a HUGE disservice to this amazing breed.

100%. We got our pup from a shelter, and we were told he was a lab mix. We got him when was 6 weeks old. As he got older, he looked less and less lab lol, so, we got a DNA test. Turns out, he’s 39% Malinois, 29% pit bull, 29% American bully, 9% German Shepherd. Based on that, you’d think he was going to be this excellent guard dog/terrible family dog, right? WRONG. Our son is 5 years old, autistic, and is loud. He also literally runs everywhere he goes. Our dog doesn’t even blink an eye when our son is stimming, or doing anything erratic. They are great, aren't they. I have one and we do agility. Please be careful about jumping anything at that age. Studies have shown that one of the reasons for joint problems as they get older is that baby ligaments are overstretched and don't support the joints thru the life span of a dog. So, maybe keep any jumping to a minimum until the endplates close and then it's much safer. x

Malinois also have a weird sense of humor. Seriously, they 'are sneaky clowns. My girl used to play tricks on me and laughed...yes, laughed...when I was too slow to pick up on them. When you know what you are doing, they are the most wonderful dogs. They will spoil you for sny other breed.

I just inherited my late brother's Belgian Malinois. Rocky is three years old now. Two things prospective owners of this breed need to know ahead of time. They are incredibly smart. In fact, Rocky is smarter than a lot of humans I have known, and I am not joking. If I tell him to go get his favorite ball, and it's in the hallway, he goes in the hallway and gets it. He actually understands what I say like a human. Second, every Malinois I have seen or read about LOVES to play fetch. All the time, every single day. If you cannot devote a lot of time to him/her, or if you do not have other people living with you that can devote a lot of time, get another breed of dog. This is a dog that craves attention throughout the day.

@@indakgalak Definitely, be persistent and use tools. You aren't gonna get by with just treats and a clicker. You can use an e-collar on vibrate or a good prong collar at that age. Be patient and persistent. Staying strong against whiners is hard sometimes. Also exercise the dog a lot. A walk a day isn't gonna do it for these pups. They need to run. Try jogging with your dog or even putting them on a treadmill. And trust me, don't ever judge their face. They may be panting, but they'll still have plenty of energy. These dogs also are great with puzzles and other games. It can be simple as some cups with treats that you shuffle. They are very smart dogs. Hope this helps. :)

I got a Belgian malinois from a kill shelter in Jacksonville Florida back in 2015. She was only about seven or eight months old and very malnourished. A police officer brought her in and said that he had found her out on the streets roaming around which I do not believe. Her teeth were already filed down and she is terrified of gunshots and fireworks so I think that is the reason she didn't make the cut as a police canine. She is the best dog I've ever owned I have young small grandchildren and I do have a young son and she is so good with all small children. A lot of people say you shouldn't have these dogs unless you are a trained canine / dog handler from the military or police department. It's funny because over in Belgium they use them to herd cattle and sheep. And they are also used as a family pet they are great around children they are great around anybody as long as you get them used to being around other people. My dog acts up when people are walking down the road or they come up in my yard which is what she's supposed to do. But I can take her to a dog park and there could be a hundred other people out there with a hundred other dogs and she doesn't pay anybody any attention I let her off the leash and throw her ball and play with her and she doesn't even act like anybody else is there. She has never had any special training. And like I said she was only about 8 months old when I got her, so if the police department was training her, she didn't get much training. I also have a very small Chihuahua that is very ornery and loves to pick on her and attacks her and forces her to play with him when she's laying down. And she doesn't even let it bother her she is the best dog I've ever had. She does have a lot of energy and is 6 years old and she still acts like a puppy most of the time but I love it. She is my one and only true soulmate. I have been married and I have children with another woman including children with my ex-wife and this dog means more to me than any person I have ever known any friend I have ever had any woman I have ever been with. She is definitely my soulmate.

Subtel sounds with a book falling on the floor and make it positive by giving treats. over a couple weeks the sound / intensity can be increased. spend about 10 minutes a time and once every hour for a total of at least 5 sessions per day. soon she will come running when she hears the sound. I normally do not use treats. i like a ball but in cases like this, treats have their place. this will help if you are in an area that has thunderstorms. If she is still intact it will be better. if not they loose the necessary hormones to see the world as they should. some can become aggressive when this is done but that is more common in males.
      good luck with her.

I love malinois. They are extremely loyal, smart, and beautiful dogs. But like so many other breeds they get a bad rap because of people stating things like " they aren't good around children" like it's a fact. Like any other dog it's all about how you raise and interact with it. I've had a Belgian Malinois as my service dog for 3 years now and she is the most loving and laid back dog I've had. She is GREAT with children and only becomes overly protective when she's supposed to which is at night while I'm sleeping which I trained her to be. She sleeps in the bed with me and is just a all around great family dog. Please don't let videos like this turn you off of getting a malinois by making you think they are hard to handle or dangerous.

Never had a Mali until I adopted a Malinois X who had been abandoned and found on the side of the road foraging for food. She has a beautiful black saddle, but that's where any GSD gene ends. My Yukie is so smart it's scary and her energy level is off-the-chart. Once she learns something, she has it down-pat. She knows the names of her toys and our car; she knows what each tongue click means; and she knows commands in French, Danish, and German. She loves police officers and children. If my daughter is walking her, nobody approaches her. Yukie is even-tempered and very friendly, although, I have seen her fur stand up. If I take her to work, all I have to do is give the command "perimeter check" and she's on duty all night. It was my lucky day when I found her.

Yes I have heard alot of this. They are very bite eager. (Should not be a surprise when they have literally been breed to chase and bite things) you need to spend alot of time when they are pups conditioning them to control bite impulses. This is true with their retrieval toys too. They will snap at you and you will catch it naturally. They didn't get the term malligator for nothing. They are a working breed and people need to know that means owning them requires work as well. If you don't want to work for your Mal you should not have one.

A pair of females were used in the movie John Wick 3. I have a 19 Year old Patterdale Terrier. He's fantastic for his age but he's really feeling the strain of stuff. He's over twice his average age, he's very dear to me and my family. I don't think my sense of respect for him would allow me to get another Dog. I would feel like I was betraying his memory but if I was to choose another it would be a Malinois.

Also, posing a Mal like a GSD in 1:43 should be a capital offense. Actually should be a capital offense to pose GSDs like that considering how it's ruined them.
