Yes 🙌🏻 i felt so suppressed and afraid of my supervisor that I would be so stressed to the point that I wanted to quit when she would be there. Managers who think that if they put their foot down and try to dictate will create a better work environment are wrong, it creates so much fear and anxiety leading to depression about my job gosh work is sometimes the worst place ever.

One of my most unforgettable job interview is when I got asked if I am willing to do extra miles like running personal errands for my boss/ superior (the interviewer himself) he even gave example like picking / dropping his daughter from school and if I am willing to make coffee for him and other supervisors (if i get hired) and I answered him with a "NO, because that is not part of my job description + he and the company will not be responsible if anything happened to me outside work" Fortunately, I still got hired and I am glad I made my self clear about it on the first place and did not try to agree on everything just to get the job. Thinking about it now I am just proud of my 23 y/o self back then being bold and firm.

Anj: You should just work for yourself. Your story reminded me of an article I read on Harvard business review 10 years ago talking about your colleagues ARE your clients, and your boss IS your biggest client. That concept holds more and more true today. Sad to tell you if you you say “that’s not in my job description” today, you won’t go far in your life these days.

I work in luxury retail in NYC, and am definitely triggered by some of your sentiments in this video. Most specifically, work life balance, (past) toxic management, and disorganization (I just moved from a flagship, and opened a smaller store). I think my biggest issue is, like you, caring waayyy too much (I can't help it). This has, in the past, definitely lead to burn out, frustration and at times setting unrealistic precedents and being taken advantage of.

Only worked in retail one time, 20 odd years ago and the concept of a 'toxic work environment' wasn't even a concept. I applied for a position in the office of a department store. Instead I was hired for a higher end cosmetics -- Not in my wheelhouse, to be honest. I asked the department manager why the store had hired me for their department? They said I was friendly and they'd been receiving comments from customers the other women at the counter were not friendly, had favorites and had 'personality issues'.
I like people. I like being helpful and though I'd never worked in sales let alone one with commissions I assumed if I applied my people skills there wouldn't be any problems.
    Wrong.
The other two women were as cut throat as they come. One of them found out I'd sold items to one of 'her customers', on her day off and told me if I ever did that again, she'd slit the tires on my vehicle. WTH?? Told the department manager and their response was the other employee said that as a matter of routine and not to take her seriously. WTH??
I'd come into work and find nasty notes from that co-worker stuck to my locker, in the drawer at the counter I worked at and after work, on the windshield of my vehicle. This time I asked to have a meeting with HR and the store manager -- They agreed but advised me 'I' was taking the other co-workers notes and threats 'too seriously'.
About a month later the district manager for the brand I worked for came in. Anyone recall the Drew Carey Show?
This women was MiMi. I remember her coming in wearing this horrible bright red and yellow plaid suit that didn't fit her. She had a 'MiMi' hairdo and enough makeup on to make Tammy Faye Baker look understated. I was written up for my brand smock being too short --- Explained it was the one the department manager gave me and I was six inches taller than the other coworker - this being her old smock. Didn't matter. She told me that if she had her way, all the 'girls' would have blonde hair (like hers) and the same style..... I was a red head and wore my hair in either French twist or a with a loose top knot. No --- The district manager said, I'd need to either lighten my hair, cut it or wear a wig.
It was when I was out of the store on my lunch break, having a cup of coffee and slice of pie, smoking a cigarette (that's how long ago this way!) in a cafe in the mall. The co-worker from Hell had the day off, saw me and reported me to the manager. Even though I wasn't in the brand smock, I got written up because they said it didn't look right for me to be in the cafe.
I explained I'd gone there on prior breaks, no one had issue with it --- I wasn't told to not go to the cafe and if my sitting in a cafe 'looked bad', then they needed to ask my co-worker why she and a couple of the other women in the store went to the cocktail lounge in the mall, for their breaks. The manager explained they went there for to have 'pop' (this was in the mid-west). Responded the cafe sold 'pop' but.... the cafe didn't sell alcohol --- might that be the reason they took their lunch breaks there?
Gave them my notice. That place was so toxic, so impossible to work in, no wonder they had a high turnover rate. Backstabbing, malicious gossip. threats and I saw other department manger walk out with arm loads of cloths --- When I asked what they were doing, they said they were just going to try them on at home ...... Found out later she'd rarely bring anything back. The different managers in the place seemed to view it as their personal closet and took advantage of every department like that.
Retail is not easy work --- Even the best employee with great people skills can get run over by bad employees and poor management ---So bad at time, I think the most unreasonable customer is nothing compared to bad coworkers or bosses.

    • @gulfgypsy
      @gulfgypsy 4 года назад +5

@@radbunnie2297 Didn't mean to trigger you or anyone --- But it just goes against my nature to see employees treated badly, for managers to use their position to foster animosity between their employees and for employees to treat each other poorly.
What I think people sometimes forget is that the person assisting you is just that: A person, an individual. Perhaps they're worried about an ill child or spouse -- We never know. So a good customer can make the day so much better and an angry customer can make it that much harder.
Even though I didn't stay there long, I did enjoy many of the customers who enjoyed being helped without being pressured --- Even those who weren't there for my department.
As my counter was near the front of the store, there were times when a customer would come to the counter to ask about other departments.
Once it was a gentleman who had extremely limited vision. He wanted to know where the bedding and linens where as he wanted to buy new pillows.
As there was another co-worker at the counter, I explained to her I was stepping away to help this man to the linens area. She affirmed that was fine.
Helped him to the area and explained to the clerk there he might need help.
Returned to the counter to find the store's assistant manager there --- She informed me it wasn't *my* job to help any customers other than those at my counter.
What? Kept my comments to myself but all I could think of is that hopefully no one ever treated her or her family like she was suggesting I treat any customer who came into the store.
You show respect and decency to someone because it's the right thing --- Not to make a sale.

Our manager would get upset at us (university students, some without cars) for not driving to the bank to deposit our cash sales, and that she was "paid too much to do that" for us. Basically, a drive to the bank was beneath her. When she made a comment about it, I finally told her nobody ever reimbursed us for the times we went in the past. She stopped talking immediately and did not 'expect' us to do so since. I have also dealt with many multi-faceted people at work, to please other managers and corporate staff that would come into the store. I really enjoyed watching your video Cindy! :)

Great information Cindy! Unfortunately, I can imagine that your experience was not unique. It takes strength to stand up to superiors in any job and say no, especially when you are just starting out. My first job was in a corporate office and my manager was toxic. He used to say to our team that if he did not come in by 10AM that we should just assume he was out for the day. After about a year there, I was working on a big project and he cursed and called me out for something that was not my responsibility in front of the entire office. Needless to say, I was embarrassed, but I managed to look him in the eye and say "You cannot speak to me that way!" and ran to the bathroom where I cried. It was that day that I decided I had enough and shortly afterwards, fortunately, I was able to resign since I had found a new and much better job. I later found out that three other co-workers resigned within the next month from the same office and about 2 months later management finally (better late than never) fired this toxic manager. TFS!

Do not know why this video was recommended to me but I am glad I took the time to listen to your message about the work environment. I have been very fortunate in my career in Environmental Management not to experience a toxic work. Yes there were problems but we very minor, mostly employee conflict issues. I want to give you credit ( a big thumbs up ) for taking the time to rely too many of the well thought out comments that your views are making. That is very rare in this format and I know it means a lot to those who took the time to post. Great Job and thanks. Looking forward to viewing the rest of your videos on your channel.

I worked in a hospital lab for years with 99% women and it was Gawd awful. I had a manager pull the same b.s. when I asked for a weekend off after working every weekend for years and years. She said she couldn't find anybody to cover. I essentially told her "No shit. Nobody is going to volunteer, you are going to have to assign it". She stood there and looked at me !Ike I had two heads. I remember when I was barely 20 I worked at this place here in NYC... OMG:
I asked the manager TWO weeks before my nephew’s christening for that day off. Everything was ok and she said I could have my day off! The DAY BEFORE THE EVENT, she waited for the moment when I was opening the door to go home to tell me I had to come the next morning. I was like “uh huh 🤔” and of course since I had made a PROMISE to be in front of the church I was not going to come to work! (I had explained that to her two weeks prior). The next day, she was off, yet she HAD TO call just to check if I had come to work, when they told her I wasn’t there, she called the owner and made him fire me!
Of course I didn’t care at that point, she was the kind of person asking for “forgiveness” when a super racist costumer came and berated the employees because the presence of “colored” people bothered them. The racism from ‘Karens’ was an everyday thing and today, 15 years later; is incredible that we still see the same level of entitlement from the same people and some managers side with them instead of just calling the police on them for harassment 🤦🏻‍♀️

Thank you for sharing your experiences! It sounds like you handled your experiences gracefully despite being so young. Although I have never worked in retail, I am in a field where the experienced/older employees tend to “eat their young.” I worked in an entry level position in my field while in school and came across a few people that didn’t like and gave me a hard time. Eventually I earned their respect once they saw the type of person I was and my work ethic. I feel like these experiences give you a tougher skin and help you deal with the next person you come across. Not everyone will like you but mutual respect is important and that is earned with time.

Let me preface this by saying THANK YOU for making this video. This is going to be a long comment but I just need to get this off my chest to someone else who’s not my husband 😂
I can so relate to the vacation days request issue!! I was constantly BEGGING for my vacation days. One specific event was when I requested time off for my husband and I’s honeymoon. I gave ELEVEN months notice to my (now ex, thank GOODNESS) manager to request 2 weeks off for our honeymoon to Japan (we even split up our wedding and honeymoon because she said I can’t take too much time off at once 🙄) and her response was “we’ll talk about it when you come back from Florida (wedding was in Florida)”. When I was back, I asked her again and her response was “May is our busiest season and I just can’t be short an esthetician and I won’t be able to find a replacement for you for 2 whole weeks” (Again, I GAVE HER 11 MONTHS NOTICE!!). She basically planned OUR honeymoon and suggested we go in June instead (which we did because what choice did I have??) which ended up costing us an extra $600 per person because June is high season in Japan.
I was in charge of inventory so I would put together a list of what we needed, but she would always have to go through it and cross out items on my list so we were always low on something. When I do give her the list, it takes her days to call in the order so sometimes we will go days or weeks without a certain product that we needed for our services.
She changed our work schedule without discussing with us first and when I spoke up and said I can’t work a late shift due to the fact that I walk home at night, she said I had no choice and that everyone has to do it. I told her if that was the case, then I may not be able to work there anymore. Her response, verbatim, was “that’s okay, I’ve got people lined up for interviews anyways”.
When I interviewed for my position as their lead esthetician, I was told that everyone treated everyone like family. But all I recall is a bunch of shit talking about a certain person when they’re not at work. Sometimes, they’re bold enough to say things to your face. I’ve had 3 (ex)coworkers say to me “I don’t know how you got this position, it should of been so and so’s, she’s been here for 10+ years”. Personally, I believe a certain position is earned by your knowledge, not by the time you’ve worked at a workplace but that’s just my opinion 🙄
Our salary is hourly and commission based and I’ve had my own manager straight up steal my retail commission. When I call her out on it, there will always be some kind of excuse of why it went under her (e.g. she thought she sold it, she clicked the wrong name on the drop down list, blah blah bullshit)
With the pandemic that’s going on now, when work resumed, I explained to her that I did not feel comfortable physically being at work for more than 7 hours a day due to the fact that we are always around different clients and everyone in my family is high risk. She told me that she will be able to accommodate me but literally one shift in, I’m already working more than what I am comfortable with. When I confronted her about it, she tried to make up excuses to why I’m working 7+ hours (e.g. work for 7 hours plus your 30 minute lunch) then she tried to brush me off by saying she doesn’t want to talk about it.

i've also started teaching myself to put my foot down with jobs. on the subject of time scheduling and work-life balance, i've had (so far) two managers try to pull the "schedule so and so earlier at the last minute" or swapping my times without informing me and then expecting me to jump up and be there when they want. they do this crap on purpose because they don't believe you're really as busy as you claim to be. i had one job where the manager changed my time literally the same day i was coming in, probably within hours of me checking my schedule because by 11 am I was told, it had already been changed from 3 pm to 2 pm. the last time i remember looking was at 9 am...and by then i was already out running errands and getting ready for the evening so how was i to know he had changed it? that manager never apologized either but he never did it again, but i knew he did it on purpose because they didn't think i actually had a life outside of work...even though i was working on several projects and going back to college...

However, I was one of those loyal clients that would tell the bullies “No we’re good over here” in a very nicety tone. The fact I have NO poker face further helped them to get the point. Then I would talk ish about them while they walked away to make things less awkward for my SA & basically acknowledge I knew what the heck was about to go down. 😂 Loving these vids. I experienced the worst.... my boss was so bullied and the worst is the supervisor who is very closed to her started to be bullied also to make her happy. She called me names, asked me to leave early at home to buy coffee for them so I can go to work before my time starts. They will asked me to buy food for them because they are lazy, using my own car . My boss will change my shift to split shift starts 7-11 then come back at 3-7:30 pm. I did that for 1 week and I said NO because it is so tiring. The worst was, this Supervisor choked me pressed my windpipe that I couldn’t breath and almost pass out and I saw my boss just laughing. That is the wake up call for me and told the HR and both got fired and filed an assault case to the Supervisor and charged him with 3 counts of assault. Good thing we have a camera. I guess I try to ignore before because my spouse had cancer and I am only one working.

My goodness, I worked in the service industry, mainly NYC restaurants for a long time and on so many levels i can relate to this post. A good manager is everything. Ive dealt with so many toxic wotk environments to the point where i will never wotk in the service/sales industry again. Im in the process of starting my own business, for now online, however if and when I do expand and hire employees, I wil do everything in my power to choose a strong team of possitive, charismatic and decorus people. There were times ive gone home and balled my eyes out because a manager or fellow emplyees mistreated me and took advantage of my genuine kindness. Especially when it came to staying late and shift coverage. Although i didnt work for a prestigious company such as LV, I absoluetly relate to so much of this video content. Is it the employee’s discretion when giving away gifts, sample perfumes, etc to the clients? I recently bought 3 bags in a span of a month (my most purchase ever) and I found myself begging for perfume sample just to have one (They gave me just 1pc 2ml sample). If you worked a popular shift and requested off, you would lose that shift because managers wouldn’t put you back on the shift. Retail and restaurant workers deserve more.

I used to work for LV in London as a seasonal staff through an agency at one of their boutique in the stockroom many many years ago. They were satisfied with my job and at the time it was seeming like they were offering me a permanent position at the flagship store. Even though I did the entire interview and training procedure back then when I got hired as a seasonal staff I had to attend to another interview and eventually I haven't got hired. I was working there for two months and what I remember back then the staff were lovely and respectful to each other however the management team were awful. I remember three of the permanent staff spent their notice period and another bunch of them wanted to quit. After when my contract had finished, months later I have bumped into my former colleague and she said that the HQ did an investigation and the entire management team got fired from that store.
Over the years I was working in luxury retail at different brands, thank god as a tailor and not in sales but still if I'm thinking back how the sales associates were behaving to each other and the rest of the operation team, I got PTSD.

Traveling back from Paris my flight was very delayed which resulted in me missing my connection in Miami and my manager at the restaurant I worked at was so mad as if it was my choice to be stuck in Miami! So grateful that I work in a much better environment now

Your Philippines comment really resonated for me. Several years in a row, I had to wait until 4 or 6 weeks before a vacation to ask permission to take those days off. For an international trip, ie my only 10-day vacation each year, I easily had to pay $1,000-$2,000 more for a late booking, just because of all the hoops I had to jump through. It was ridiculous.

Fantastic - you spoke about a tricky situation and handled it perfectly. I would like to know how to not "give sales" to people like the bad actors in your past. I don't feel people should profit from poor behavior . Thank you for making this video.

Thanks so much for watching Michael! Unfortunately that is a common occurrence on the sales floor 🙁

@@AHeatedMess my first time into LV I was snubbed by 4 sales associates. I located another who was so nice. I always go to them and will plan a trip based on their schedule. The good make up for the bad :)

19:00 How does a storeroom function without box cutters??? I use to do that type of work for Marshall’s and I couldn’t function without them. I hate using scissors because you can cut your hands up and anything other than a box cutter may cut the merchandise inside, which I’ve seen happen countless times. Plus, you need to break down the hundreds of boxes that were just opened. That store sounds terrible.

Funny 😀 that you mentioned that movie! "The devil wears Prada" Because that movie totally describes and show how toxic, unjust, ruthless and cold the Fashion world + Retail world can be. I worked for Ann Taylor for 4 months, and all i can say is that ; It was one of the most awful experiences ever!
