Actually that’s not true. The director had it planned out but he kept doing more and more takes asking for more intensity. The final time they did it the director told Jackman to truly truly put himself in the spot of that father. And that was the take we got. Terence Howard said he was getting sick and Paul Dano was reportedly shaking and him and Jackson hugged for a like five minutes shaking and panting. They said it was very very emotionally intense and they thought it was gonna be messed up cause they thought it was too over the top. But the director said it was perfect.

10:49 that notion always bugs me due to cases like the "James Bulger" case in Merseyside, England in 1993. Two 10 year old boys kidnapped, tortured and murdered a 2 year old boy. There's plenty of cases where children do evil things, so the idea that an ADULT with the mind of a young child couldn't do/comprehend something evil is ridiculous. Also, in spite of his mind/IQ being younger, he still maintains the body and physicality of an adult. He'd still have the strength to take two kids. 🤷♀️🤦♀️
Yes, but in that case, they were able to easily take the kid away without being seen. In the story of the movie here, he would have been seen or noticed with the girls unless he helped in keeping them hidden, which of course, is what happened. Kids can do evil things but they don't think of all the precautions and planning involved until they are least teenagers and even then, they usually commit a really messy crime with lots of evidence.

I definitely feel like I'm in the minority when I say I feel the most for Alex/Barry and the other suspected man. They're the cold cases, the ones forgotten by everyone, whose parents have had to sit with the loss of their child for upwards of 26 years. Those little boys were drugged for who knows how long, taken from their families and forced into a living situation with their abuser. They are literally the worst case scenario for parents like Hugh Jackman's character. The level of mental breakdown Alex/Barry must have suffered through from such a young age to mean he has the fixed mental age of 10. The suspected man seeking out ways of recreating what he went through, reliving his trauma. And these people weren't helped. They were used, discarded and discriminated against, and now are in this limbo of trauma, culpability and mistrust from the public. The suspected man pushed to the brink, and Alex/Barry was physically tortured. He's reunited with his mother at the end of the movie, but at what cost?

It's not just a legal matter. Torture is not only morally reprehensible, it also just doesn't work. A victim of torture will so rarely give you the needed information, that it's not a viable option. Which in turn makes it not just "legally not okay", it's not okay, period! I'm always so shocked, whenever I see this movie, how many people defend Jackman's character. Is it understandable? Yes. Is it condonable? Fuck, no! Even if I were to wanna do the same in that situation, that wouldn't make it right.
@@nikolaiquack8548 Agreed! And that's why Hugh Jackman (I think) didn't get an Oscar. Excellent performance but the character he portrayed tortured someone and the Academy can't 'condone' such a thing...
You can see glimpses of Paul Dano's Riddler character in this performance IMO. Also completely agree that while on a first watch the torture scenes seem somewhat justifiable, once you know the reveals they take on an even darker tone than they already had. Definitely a super underrated movie.
This is my favorite Hugh Jackman film! Idk why it's not talked about that much. I've rewatched maybe 5+ times already. You guys didn't show this particular part of the scene, but in the scene where Gyllenhaal picks up Jackman & they have that interaction in the car, I watched the "Script to Screen" video to that, where you watch the scene & follow along with the script. After Gyllenhaal said "It hasn't been a week," Jackman was supposed to leave the car right there & the scene ends, but instead he improvised all that yelling. Brilliant acting from both men! 🙌
Heres the brilliance of this movie and i really want ypu rejects to think about this and discuss...this is not a movie about kidnappings. This is a movie about the audience response to these events. This is examining us. Our gut reactions to for example animal violence and how somehow you are more offended by the cruelty done to a dog than the fact that kids are in peril. Or how we just jump to conclusions because people are different and they make us uncomfortable. This is a film asking us, more like telling us really , thst when the chips are down and there are no answers...we will eat eachother. We justify cruelty on humans.
Such a good call because in the beginning of the movie, he tells his son after hunting that grandpa said when things get dark, people will turn on each other. He began with faith and ended up with no faith. He became a prisoner after making someone a prisoner.
I agree on everything except the animal cruelty. The difference is we actually saw him almost choking the damn dog while the only thing we saw with the girls was them being drugged, which is disturbing but not as graphic. Also, it's not a competition. You can care about both.
This conversation is probably over by now, but this comment was what I took from the movie. I definitely didn’t focus on the mistreatment of the animals aside from how interesting we hold animal cruelty > human cruelty, but I was definitely thinking “Eff these creepy people” when they were the ones that needed the most compassion and were treated the worst in this story. This film messed with me bad, and I hadn’t seen it since my first time. Rewatching these highlights made me realize how criminally underrated this movie is.
The only bad part about this movie is the cops definitely would've searched the aunt's house if Dano's character was parking his RV there, the kids would've been found in the first 10 minutes.
Spoilers if you haven't seen the film: Obviously, the dog scene is not excusable. I just wanted to clarify Alex/ Barry specifically targeted the dog because it belonged to the lady who kidnapped him, Holly Jones. He was basically taking out his rage on her animal since he was being manipulated and mistreated by her. The only thing they really mention specifically is the snake incident but obviously, he was being drugged by them as well since he got the same treatment as Joy, Anna, Bob, etc.
49:07 I’ve watched this movie at least 10 times, it’s one of my favorites, but I just had a HUGE EPIPHANY when she said the line about her husband disappearing. HER HUSBAND IS THE ONE WHO CONFESSED TO THE PRIEST ABOUT KILLING KIDS. And that the guy with the suitcases and blood was another one of the kids they snatched. The layers of this movie is just insane every time I watch it.
I remember having to point out Loki’s eye brow twitch throughout this movie to some friends when I forced them to watch it with me. It’s an interesting bit of character in this whole movie nobody picks up on. I
This movie was Sooo good and underrated! Between Tara and John and John and Andrew I'm obsessed. John you are a sweetheart. Love your knowledge and sensitivity. Tara you are the friend every girl wants to have. Love it!! 😂

I told my family we should go to the cinema to see this movie, because i saw the trailer on tv and on youtube and noticed how little advertisments it would get but by the trailer alone it looked amazing. watched it in the cinema and my family and i were left cinematically satisfied lol
The interrogation scene was one of the best scene of the movie. I remember being so shocked that the guy who was being interrogated commited suicide by shooting himself. It scared me more than most horror movies with cheap jump scares
Tara: "...because he has a 10 year old possible...whatever..." Dear Lord, please make sure Tara never works with or around the Special Olympics or kids with special needs. Yes, some of them are in their 20s, 30s or older, some may even play a little too rough with animals before they learn to be gentle with them, and some may say some things not fully understanding what they're saying or may say things that they think will make others feel better, but they def don't need her jumping to conclusions and moving straight to torturing them for information. Thanks.
I’m just glad that Tara and Flash enjoyed this movie as much as I did. This was my favorite Denis film for a while until the Dune series. One of the best thrillers that you’re ever gonna see.

Curious why the rage given to Paul Dano’s character for the dog situation was not given to Melissa Leo’s character for her atrocities done to kids? Granted, i only saw the cut down version, but…🤷🏽
yeah i'm always confused when people get more angry at animal abuse than children's abuse. both are incredibly awful, obviously. but why not give the same energy to the kids being possibly hurt?
@@codywalsh2075 personally I always react more strongly towards animal cruelty, I've learned this angers people (I don't think we should be so quick to police the thoughts and feelings of strangers but internets gonna internet) so I don't readily share that in my daily life. I definitely think there's validity to your statement about the fact that we had to witness what Alex did to the pup but knowing myself, my response would be the same if we were merely told about it. This film is so heartbreaking. The cinematography is out of this world, and the soundtrack is superb. I like the little details, like Jake’s eye twitches. Him rescuing the girl at the end and driving through traffic, was powerful. Hugh’s acting was incredible. The ending always bothered me, but I 100% get it because it’s leaving it open ended. I just wanted to see him rescue/find Hugh Jackman. Great film!
(SPOILERS) Paul Danos character of them all really have it the worst in this movie, so tragic and yet looks so bad and evil for half the movie, Paul Dano is a great actor we need to cast him for the psycho role more often
This, The Nice Guys, Blindspotting, Hannibal (Yeah it’s a series but every episode is basically a short film) and Short Term 12 are some of the most underrated works of art I have recently seen…
Paul Dani’s character DID abducted them tho. He took them in the RV, while actually probably making friends since he was mentally 10, and then the old lady put them down in the hole maze or locked up in the house it’s not really clear. But he did play a part in it and was protecting the old lady, damn near till death. So he was by no means innocent. He is fully in control of his actions, just mentally younger.
They stated in the film that he was just playing with them/ giving them a tour of the RV since they wanted to see it. Then the lady abducted them "I decided they should stay." Since "Alex" Barry was kidnapped she was manipulating and intimidating him. The snake accident caused his mental cognition to decrease and every scene they are both in you can see him practically wincing and her trying to speak over him. Like she was still threatening him. You can tell she coached him on what he was supposed to say and she basically gives him a death glare like "you better not mess this up or you know what might happen if you do." I think him saying, "They didn't cry until I left them" was his misguided way of trying to let Keller know that he kept the girls safe when he was around/ able to. But of course, it was taken differently. He hated the abductor so much that's why he took out his anger on her dog when he was made to walk it because he couldn't stand up to her personally.
So glad you reacted to this. A difficult watch, but one of my favourite thrillers. Brilliantly intense. If you liked this, I really recommend The Pledge (2001). Beautifully directed by Sean Penn. A very understated performance from Jack Nicholson with Robin Wright, Benicio del Toro, Aaron Eckhart and a whole host of incredible cameos. A great slow burn, mystery/thriller novel adaptation, that seems to have fallen by the wayside. Utterly gripping.
JSYK, Prisoners only got an Oscar nomination for cinematography: Roger Deakins. Hugh Jackman is a lead actor nominee for Les Miserables while Jake Gyllenhaal is a supporting actor nominee for Brokeback Mountain.
You really have no idea what the word underrated even means if you think this. The film was #1 in the box office and is widely renowned as a phenomenal film.
And of course the conclusion is he saves Keller (because we know from what we have seen of him that he won't let it go)....and then put him in jail. Do the crime, serve the time.
@shibashibaa6665 yeah I don't get why people don't understand this. Just because people eat meat, doesn't mean they want to see animal suffering. I've had massive disagreements with vegans in the past about this, because they just assume meat eaters enjoy animal torture.

Truthfully people will jump at whatever phantom chances suggest themselves to self-importantly call out cognitive dissonance. My comment is also a reply to the original comment. Although that one is more about the fact that the two things are not even close to mutually exclusive ("sad to see the death of a deer" and "favorite Thanksgiving meal is a poor turkey").
The cinematography is something that was worked out very collegially between Villeneuve and Deakins: because Villeneuve storyboards everything and involves his cinematographers in the process, the visuals are always there in the plan from the start (though Villeneuve has no problem making changes during shooting if anybody - not just the cinematographer has a suggestion that sounds like it would make for a better story).

Everyone send flowers to the dude on the right.. He's probably still upset about the deer.. 🦌 😂
Spoilers if you haven't seen the film:
Obviously, the dog scene is not excusable.
Oh yeah this movie, I still remember seeing it in theaters. There was several times were the audience all gasped or winced together.
This movie deserves more attention and should be talked aboot waaaay more! Jackman and Dano give amazing performances
Love it!! 😂
Hugh Jackman killed it this movie!
And yet it is Jake Gyllenhaal who steals the show in each appearance, we still have to recognize the subtle games, the eye games, the gestures. Incredible actor.
GREAT MOVIE! Soul crushing at points but its sooooo good the acting is top notch Hugh Jackman does Drama and heart wrenching moments perfectly in everything he has done
Jake Gyllenhaal has one of the best haircuts in this movie. Made me want to cut my hair 😆
This is my favorite movie ever. I told my family we should go to the cinema to see this movie, because i saw the trailer on tv and on youtube and noticed how little advertisments it would get but by the trailer alone it looked amazing. watched it in the cinema and my family and i were left cinematically satisfied lol
As a dad to a daughter, this is scarier than any horror
The interrogation scene was one of the best scene of the movie. I remember being so shocked that the guy who was being interrogated commited suicide by shooting himself. It scared me more than most horror movies with cheap jump scares
Jake Gyllenhaal is overdue for an oscar. This guy is such a versatile actor man and full of talent
This movie!!!!!!!! It’s the only movie that actually portrays what a parent will do when someone hurts their child ❤❤❤

This movie is too good. I love that all the tiniest plot threads get tied up so neatly
Tara: "...because he has a 10 year old possible...whatever..."
Dear Lord, please make sure Tara never works with or around the Special Olympics or kids with special needs.
The insane reaction to him being the little boy....ummm the old lady said to Hugh Jackman that he was the first they grabbed.
Too many “OH’s and EEE’s” and not enough active listening 😂
@@kevinmandevil9842just remember, we are trying to make it entertaining for you guys on top of listening. Doing a reaction is far more different than watching a film in the traditional way. If you ever try reacting you will see picking up all the details is much tougher
And hissing lol sssss
Curious why the rage given to Paul Dano’s character for the dog situation was not given to Melissa Leo’s character for her atrocities done to kids? Granted, i only saw the cut down version, but…🤷🏽
yeah i'm always confused when people get more angry at animal abuse than children's abuse. both are incredibly awful, obviously. but why not give the same energy to the kids being possibly hurt?
@fairylixx maybe because we actually see the dog being hurt unlike with the children
@@codywalsh2075 i thought that as well
@ladyhotep5189 well people react differently, no point crying about it.
Dogs>humans in my mind but maybe that's "not ok."
In high school me and all of my hyper immature friends turned this on at a sleep over. It shut up everyone in the house and had us captivated. Masterpiece and my fav by Dennis
Shawn Levy in the title..? Someone’s excited for Deadpool & Wolverine. lol
I had to look up the crew and writers to see if Shawn Levy was involved at all... he's not, haha. Weird title.
@@amiccus_ same. I asked ChatGPT and it said “yes he was” I said “are you sure?” “No, sorry he was not.” ?? 🤣
They're trying to manipulate the algorithm with Deadpool 3 coming out this week 😂
Best movies is when they got a great cast together
PLEASE watch 'End of Watch' (another fantastic movie with Jake Gyllenhaal)!
That movie is so so good. One of my absolute favorite Gyllenhaal movies.
You know it’s kind of crazy because I don’t personally believe that this is Denis’s best overall movie but I do think it might be arguably his best written film and the one that features some of the better performances he’s ever directed.
I remember seeing this when it came out and not knowing anything about it. Omg it blew me away. Incredible performances from everyone.
You know it's a great movie if you see Rara tearing up and remembering details 😁 also PAUL DANO IS MVP IN THIS MOVIE FOR ME his acting is so on point and in tune with his co-actors and i feel he doesnt get the credit he deserves. LOVES THIS REACTION!! 🎉🎉
FINALLY, MY SECOND FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME
what's ur first ?
@@itsmeaimbot A Silent Voice
Loved this movie ever since it came out. It’s absolutely phenomenal. It also hits different now since I had my first daughter couple years ago. Hugh Jackman is just perfection in this film ❤❤
Denis Villeneuve still in his Pre-Sci Fi era... Insane.
Jake Gyllenhaal’s character Detective Loki was so interesting and complex. Definitely my favourite performance of his
The dude he found in the priest’s basement is the old lady’s husband
Um, yes. Everybody knows that.
This is easily one of the best films I’ve ever seen underrated masterpiece
You really have no idea what the word underrated even means if you think this.
The film was #1 in the box office and is widely renowned as a phenomenal film.
@@BrandonWestfall the fuck you talking about? It’s literally a movie no one often brings up unless it’s talked about off someone watching it, you know like I dunno the Reel Rejects, don’t assume everyone remembers nor has something widely regarded because you do.
@@BrandonWestfall not one actor received a nomination from the academy, that’s underrated comprehend?
@@corndizzle25 First, lose the attitude drama queen.
Second, underrated implies it is viewed poorly by the masses.
Unseen doesn’t equate to underrated. You’d be hard pressed to find people who have seen the film and didn’t enjoy it.
Also, I never stated my opinion nor did I say people had to agree with it. That’s was yet another ignorant assumption you made.
@@BrandonWestfall nobody asked for your opinion, nor do you qualify to tell anyone commenting as a fan of their reaction to a film what they should define something as go the fuck away dude.
Great film!
This movie is such a hard watch but SO worth it. Absolutely amazing performance from Hugh Jackman😢
I watched it on a plane for the first time and JEEEsus.
@@fettel1988 oh god😳🤭
My favorite movie of all time. I made all my friends and relatives watch this so I'm glad you covered it 😍
(SPOILERS)
Paul Danos character of them all really have it the worst in this movie, so tragic and yet looks so bad and evil for half the movie, Paul Dano is a great actor we need to cast him for the psycho role more often
This, The Nice Guys, Blindspotting, Hannibal (Yeah it’s a series but every episode is basically a short film) and Short Term 12 are some of the most underrated works of art I have recently seen…
This is one of my favorite movies! Denis rlly knows how to make a great story but also make it visually appealing.
Intense. Right up there with Bone Collector (Denzel Washington) and Resurrection (Christopher Lambert).
The bone collector, now there’s a movie that should be talked about more.
You can tell she coached him on what he was supposed to say and she basically gives him a death glare like "you better not mess this up or you know what might happen if you do."
I think him saying, "They didn't cry until I left them" was his misguided way of trying to let Keller know that he kept the girls safe when he was around/ able to.
"Running Scared" with Paul Walker is another really tough movie to watch. So intense. Greg and Coy should watch that one.
This might be my fav movie of all time
God I love this movie! So glad that you guys reacted to this!!!
Bro not them focusing on a dog the whole movie while two little girls get kidnapped and druged 🤦
One of my favorite movies ever! The acting and story are just incredible! We never get thrillers like this anymore!
A movie I would love to see a reaction for would be Wind River! A very underrated film.
That “why you flanking me” scene is so incredibly tense. Might be my favorite Jeremy Renner movie.
This is such a great great movie. Everyone played there parts amazing
JSYK, Prisoners only got an Oscar nomination for cinematography: Roger Deakins. Hugh Jackman is a lead actor nominee for Les Miserables while Jake Gyllenhaal is a supporting actor nominee for Brokeback Mountain.
My favorite Hugh Jackman movie!!! And my favorite Jake Gyllenhaal movie role!!
This, Donnie Darko and Nightcrawler for me for Jake Gyllenhaal.
The acting in this movie is phenomenal it’s one of my favourites ❤
One of my favorite movies of all time. Hugh Jackman killed it in this roll
One of the most underrated movies of the 21st century. Can’t believe it didn’t win any Oscars for the performances by everyone
You really have no idea what the word underrated even means if you think this.
The film was #1 in the box office and is widely renowned as a phenomenal film.
@@BrandonWestfall It was underrated at the Oscars when it didn’t win an award :/
Dude every time Andrew starts crying i have to hold my tears back so hard not to cry with him but not even because of the movie 😫
This guy talks like hes walking on egg shells. She must beat him when the camera is off. lol
And of course the conclusion is he saves Keller (because we know from what we have seen of him that he won't let it go)....and then put him in jail. Do the crime, serve the time.
Villeneuve with Deakins as stunning as Villeneuve and Fraser; Nolan and Van Hoytema. Images that induce nipple chills.
Are you saddened to see the death of a deer, but your favorite Thanksgiving meal is a poor turkey? wow 😅
Lmao Fr 😂
Lots of cognitive dissonance in this reaction. Lol
You can enjoy eating meat and still find it sad to see an animal die, those arent mutually exclusive.
@shibashibaa6665 yeah I don't get why people don't understand this. Just because people eat meat, doesn't mean they want to see animal suffering.
I've had massive disagreements with vegans in the past about this, because they just assume meat eaters enjoy animal torture.
@@that.ll_do_pig She literally said within the same breath, or close to the same breath, that if you're gonna hunt, fine (or very similar to "fine"), but make sure you kill it quickly, and then also said "true" to the point that we aren't sad for the cow when we eat at McDonalds.
I’ve been WAITING for yall to watch this! This is in the top 3 for Hugh Jackman performances for me!
He and Jake Gyllenhaal make a great duo
OMG YESS!!! I love this movie and wish more people would watch it, glad I got to see my favorite channel react to it❤
Oh my god yes, can’t wait to watch this after work
The cinematography is something that was worked out very collegially between Villeneuve and Deakins: because Villeneuve storyboards everything and involves his cinematographers in the process, the visuals are always there in the plan from the start (though Villeneuve has no problem making changes during shooting if anybody - not just the cinematographer has a suggestion that sounds like it would make for a better story).
I’ve seen this a few times, but you both got me invested again. My heart broke for Tara with some of the moments and Andrew crying was devastating😢. Great reaction team❤ ring the beeeeeellllllll, ring the bell🔔
