Rachel McAdams is my favourite actress. However, I feel that she is grossly underrated and underutilized. She needs to be given more lead roles and something that will really show off her full potential. She was the only reason why people stayed to watch Season 2 of True Detective.
Guys loved the reaction…speaking of 50 cents acting, the most recent movie I’ve seen from is called “Den Of Thieves” yall should check it out dope movie!
Told my family I wanted to see this for my birthday, all I knew about it was the music and it was about boxing. We were all crying the whole time, in the full theater. With everyone else.
I love Jake in this but as always Rachel McAdams knew the assignment and nailed it. She had basically 30 minutes to make the audience really care for her character to truly feel the devastation of her loss to Jake & Oona's characters.
The deal with the tape on the hands & marking of at the beginning of the film: It's a signature by an official to say the hands have been inspected as well as the hand wraps themselves. This is to prevent illegal (disqualifying) methods from being used, such as metal plates, etc. Sometimes the stadium has an official whose job it is to oversee the hands being wrapped. He will apply a stamp to seal the wrap. Other times an official signs it, freehand, with a felt pen. Then the boxers can go out to the ring and glove up in the ring - the referee may check the wrap seal. Or if they come out ready, they have to have a stamp or signature on the wrap before they can glove up in the changing room. There is a whole art to creating illegal wraps, using all sorts of things that shouldn’t be in there. Aluminium cooking foil is one such material, used to build a really hard front fist surface. Official wrap oversight and sealing is an attempt to stop these games. This process is, as you saw yourselves, conducted with the utmost scrutiny and is taken very seriously. hope that helped....😉 great reaction.
@@Sush8815 He has so many amazing performances. Love him in Prisoners but to me Nightcrawler is the performance of his career. Should have been nominated at the Oscars for sure.
Don't know how Jake doesn't has at least 2 Oscars, I think him and Christian Bale are the best actors who are consistent and never let you down and jake scripts selection is also so good
I was in MMA from age 17… when I saw this movie. I immediately switched to boxing. Jake Gylenhaal went so hard in this one. I love how he portrayed a punch drunk boxer with signs of CTE. Warrior is another great one! Also to answer your question, the officials sign the wraps and the gloves to say that they meet regulations. They make sure boxers don’t put things in their gloves that give them an advantage. Once signed off, they can’t take off the wraps or their gloves. Boxing is crazy wild behind the scenes. So much messed up stuff goes down. I’m glad they showed that
I remember watching this one night with a friend thinking it was just another boxing movie.. we both ended up crying through most of it. Gyllenhaal is incredible.
Roy Jones was a Light Heavyweight/Heavyweight boxer with the speed of a lightweight and the power of a heavyweight....truly one of the greatest of all time.
Nahh, he definitely wasnt ALL of that 😂😂.. Couldnt even handle Bernard Hopkins and made him wait like 15 years for a rematch while he kept fighting tomato cans instead
Jake is one of the best actors of our generation, underrated and underappreciated, but this tremendous movie shows the potential he has, Southpaw is a tremendous underrated drama, good reaction friends!
I lost my brother and sister a few months before this movie came out. I saw it with my dad because we just thought it was a boxing movie and we love combat sports and by the end of the movie we had been in tears multiple times. I know not a lot of people have this movie in their top 10 but it will always be there for me because it was something that kick-started both of us healing. Also the wrapping on their hands is mostly to protect the fighters hands and the lines they put on it is to make sure it hasn't been taken off and rewrapped because fighters can tamper with them to make them harder which can cause serious brain damage to the opponent (it crippled a fighter I don't remember the name of off the top of my head that became brain dead because of it) and the signature is to show its been verified by an official I believe could he wrong on that part.
My favorite fact about this movie is that it's inspired by Eminem's life. But instead of being told through music it's told through boxing. It's essentially like a sequel to 8 Mile and that's why Eminem was supposed to star in it.
Hey man, hence the word "inspired". It's not an exact copy of his life. You can look up stories and interviews of the writer who talked about it being inspired by Eminem. The hardship he faces after losing his wife in the movie mirrors the struggles and pitfalls of eminem's life after he lost his best friend Proof. Also it's called Southpaw, because a left handed fighter in boxing is being equated to a white rapper in hip hop. It's all metaphorical, not a true retelling of his life. You can literally look into all of this, it's true.@@codyt821

But you can say, 50 Cent getting this role, and Em’s label making songs for the movie were all Eminem’s business decisions.
@jacobaarum Yeah, so its more like just "A dramatic movie written by Eminem"... Saying that it was inspired by this or that, has nothing to do with anything. Especially when everything is completely changed to new or different ideas.. Its just a boxing movie written by Eminem, not a retelling of his life.. Just like "Rocky".. Except of course, Rocky is a million times better
52:23 really took me by surprise because of the real life incident in which a child died trying to protect his mother recently. This movie really hits you like a punch to the face, I'm glad to see you appreciating the filmmaking too.
The actor that plays the friend that stuck beside him after he lost his everything in this movie is the same actor in Road House where Jake broke his hyoid bone and crushed his throat.
A large portion of this movie was filmed in Pittburgh wrere director Antoine Fuqua is from but made it to look like Hell's Kitchen. Willis gym use to be an actual boxng gym called Carrick Community Boxing Academy for a short time but I think use to be an Eckerd (Rite Aid) back in the early 90's. The scene with Hope jogging down the street with an Italian Village Pizzaria in the background is right across the street form where the Willis gym is set at the intersection of Sankey Ave, Brownville Rd, and Maytide Street. There are not any high rise buildings as shown in the background and were CGI into the scene to make it more look like Hells Kitchen. It is the boarder of Brentwood and Carrick Buroughs. I am from this area.
Jake Gyllenhaal was so intense as Billy Hope and you could just feel his passion. This felt super fresh to watch a boxing movie that was centered around neither Rocky Balboa nor Adonis Creed

James Horner was set to score Fuqua's next film too, the Denzel Washington/CHris Pratt/Ethan Hawke -starring remake of The Magnificent Seven, but died while the film was still in development. However, he had already begun work on the score, and had gotten far enough along that he had the main themes and broad strokes completed for key scenes worked out, so his assistant and protege Simon Franglen (who went on to succesd Horner for the score of the second Avatar movie) was able to mould that work into the score for the finished film,. and as a result Horner was rightly credited as co-composer for the film. This was a beautifully fitting tribute for Fuqua to give to his late friend.

But I was shocked to realize just how much I was getting into the emotional stakes of this film, the acting, the cinematography, and where it went emotionally overall. You two together always makes me feel warm and fuzzy!! This is such a powerful movie and revisiting it with you guys and watching you experience it is truly touching. Great reaction. Adore you both!! ✨️😇
One of my favorite fighting movies of all time. I definitely didn't expect this film to be as good as it was. It's such a great movie. I love Jake Gyllenhaal
7:02. The weight of a light heavyweight is 175 pounds. A heavyweight is over 200 pounds. Middleweight is 160, Welterweight is 147 and Cruiserweight is 200.
The wraps are put on to protect the fighters hands and his/her opponent they mark them to make sure no one tampers with them. Famous incident fairly recently (Margarito vs Cotto) Margarito put plaster under his wraps did ridiculous amount of damage
2:00 I always forget thay The Hustle Standard was in the soundtrack for this movie lol. I highly recommend their music to any Gym people or motivational people. They got some good songs. My favourite is probably "Hungry"
I really liked this movie and loved your reactions. I was right there with you. On another note I read that in some fight movies the POV view of punches coming at the camera is created by placing the camera in the middle of a tire and the actors punch the tire around the camera. There's other techniques I'm sure.
South Paw is such a freaken good movie. One of the best in its genre, and Jake is incredible in it.. Heck, EVERYONE is incredible in it! Also - The director here is the same man, whom is directing the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic 👍 Thanks for your reaction, guys 🤗
Not sure if you guys knew this but Southpaw was originally supposed to be Eminem's 2nd movie after 8 Mile. Eminem was supposed to be Billy Hope back in 2005 or so and this movie just went into development hell. Glad this finally came out years later and he got to do the music.
I usually dont cry during movies, but this movie had me crying quite a bit lol. His wife getting shot was so unexpected and it just hit me really hard. I went into the movie thinking it was going to be a more stereotypical sports movie with a simple story, but man this pulls at so many heart strings. The acting is so well done too.
Such a great film! Jake did an amazing job with his role. This one really hits your emotions. Great reaction Guys! Definitely check out "Warrior" next! If you've never been in the ring or the cage, the hand wraps and certification by an official are real. They always mark them and sign off. I still have mine from my fights (MMA).
Paddy Considine (King Viserys from House Of The Dragon, films like Dead Mans Shoes, Hot Fuzz and many other great/cult movies) is in an amazing Boxing Movie with a whist called The Journeyman, that’s definitely worth putting on your To Watch List
It won’t get noticed on here as a recommendation….but “Reign Over Me” with Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle is a PHENOMENAL film. Honestly (in my opinion) Adam Sanlders best performance. I can’t watch it without a few tears 😅
It's one of my favorite Jake Gyllenhaal films along with nightcrawler, prisoners, Spider-Man:FFH as mysterio I was 17 when it came out my mom and I watched it together to watch R rated movies, Rachael McAdams is 🔥 and stunning in this movie I ❤ the relationship with his daughter, forest Whitaker is superb, Antoine Fuqua is a brilliant director and RIP to James Horner the greatest music composer and one of my favorite music scores.
Trivia. Before southpaw he filmed nightcrawler and the transition of his weight and physique from that movie to southpaw was pure dedication. BTW you should also watch nightcrawler.
Fun Fact Eminem Originally was supposed to play the role but turned it down with the tough hard work he would've had to go through, thankfully he did a few songs for this movie :)
South Paw refers to the stance and not really the dominate hand of the fighter. I for one am right handed and prefer fighting in South Paw because I have more control and power with the jab since you lead with the right and prefer the added power to my less dominate left hand for a cross punch. Also adding a quick over hand right after throwing out a quick jab in South Paw is one of my favorite 1-2s. However, any accomplished boxer will learn how to fight in both South Paw and orthodox and knowing how to switch between the two.
Antoine Fuqua's first option for Billy was Eminem but he declined. but because EM liked the story, he produced the soundtrack for this movie. Fun fact. Em said this movie is the sequel to 8 Mile, for him it was like the relationship between Em and his daughter when he was dealing with his drug problems and his fight to get her back..
One of my favorite movies is Den of Thieves, which 50 cent plays a supporting role in but i would highly recommend reacting to that movie, it’s really good. not a boxing movie btw
i have enjoyed Jake's performances in basically ever movie he has done and i enjoy ranking my favourite acting for loads of different actors/actresses but Jake is one of the few i cant rank. He really brings everything to every movie he has done.
There are a few other fighting movies that you guys should check out Warrior Annapolis Never Back Down 1,2 and 3 Fighting Cinderella Man Only the Strong The fighter Million dollar baby Rocky 1,2,3,4,5, Rocky Balboa Creed 1,2, and 3 Bleed for this Undisputed 1,2,3 and 4
Think I was like 15 when I got my first phone…Nokia I believe…and I think Ice Cube is under appreciated as a rapper turned actor…became very comfortable behind the camera and talented with scripts
Did you you know Antoine Fuqua approached Eminem for the role as 8 miles & Eminem's real life story inspired the writer alot. After having few discussions they decided to bring a good actor who can pull off Billy Hope and Eminem becomes part off being the Executive Producer for the movie!

I'm the same way where I'm right handed but my fighting stance is Southpaw
Plz watch warrior with Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton.
You have to do Warrior with tom hardy, nick nolte, and jennifer morrison.
Such an underrated movie.
Victor Ortiz was a professional fighter who was hitting Billy when Tick told him to block only
Donald Glover is the best actor turned rapper turned actor 😂
LOL
One of my favorite movies is Den of Thieves, which 50 cent plays a supporting role in but i would highly recommend reacting to that movie, it’s really good. not a boxing movie btw

Think I was like 15 when I got my first phone…Nokia I believe…and I think Ice Cube is under appreciated as a rapper turned actor…became very comfortable behind the camera and talented with scripts
If I'm right, Light Heavyweight is 175lbs in boxing and in MMA it's usually 205lbs
What's the all-time BEST Boxing Motion Picture??
Despite Rocky being a little overrated, it's still Rocky
My vote would have to go to Creed
Warrior (2nd is Fighter)
MMA MOVIE THOUGH ...Never Back Down - and I'll hear NO slander about it --- it's a great story, ya buncha armchair Roperts)
Creed Trilogy
To me it's creed 2 and warrior at the same time
Amazing reaction
Damn this movie is not spoken about enough. Brilliant movie. With Warrior also, another banger.
I got my first phone in 2007, with my first paycheck after boot camp when I enlisted in the Army.
This film is great warrior is great too highly recommend it
Great reaction as always, guys. Favorite rapper/actor? For me that's Tupac in Gridlock'd (1997).
This is my favorite Jake movie!🙌🏾
Y'all need to see Lawless!
Did you you know Antoine Fuqua approached Eminem for the role as 8 miles & Eminem's real life story inspired the writer alot. After having few discussions they decided to bring a good actor who can pull off Billy Hope and Eminem becomes part off being the Executive Producer for the movie!
