James Garner was a true gentleman, and I have watched "The Americanization of Emily' probably more than 5 or 6 times due to the fact that 2 of my favorite actors, James Garner and Melvyn Douglas are in it.
Had a funny experience with Garner. Long story made short, I was invited to play at Bel-Air Country Club. My benefactor was delayed about an hour. The pro asked if I'd like to play a few holes while I waited. "You can join the 2 guys coming off 9". The "2 guys" were James Garner and Mac Davis. After watching them hit their tee shots on 10, I commented "I'm not sure I'm good enough to play with you two." Garner said, "We don't care how bad you play. Just don't do it slow". And off he sped in his cart

A revealing story about McQueen came from one of his female costars (I forget her name but I saw her interviewed years ago). In one scene McQueen was directed to lose his temper and pull her roughly to face him square on. The actress said being pulled hard really hurt and she winced with each take. McQueen said suddenly to the director, after about the 5th take, ‘I’m not happy about this’ Our actress was touched that he was being considerate of her discomfort only to be astounded when he continued ‘I’m not happy about this because when I pull her round she blocks me from the camera and you can’t see my face properly’ What an egotistical douche!!!

I worked with Charles Bronson's neice in the mid 80's and she did mention he grew up poor but had a good relationship with him. She stated the tabloids were very unfair which was not surprising them. I quit paying any attention to them after Princess Diana's death.
Very True, McQueen was a joke all the guys on and off the set--just a down right low life --my father and all his friends in production in the 60's --never had anything good to say about McQueen --just he was a low life ,actor who wore make up for a living-our dads did all the big films and biker movies--50'60's and 70's James Garner on the other hand was a true prince and loved but everyone in town--
Tell the truth. Read his biography. Plus records about him back then James had a temper. He abused his wife Louis. She left him 3 times. Went back till James. passed.
@@FactsVerse Bronson was really not easy to work with because he was dissatisfied how his career turned out at the beginning but many stars said that he changed after he become a star and met his wife Jill Ireland. The problem was that James Garner met Bronson when Charlie was not a big star in motion pictures.
Garner attacked McQueen as a tough guy poser and a movie star but not an actor. Many of us beg to differ and do appreciate these attacks. I also heard James Caan offensivley attacked John Wayne. Its a shame they need to go there.
When Garner was a guest on talk shows such as Johnny Carsen he seemed very nervous and insecure. It was such a contrast to his on screen persona. Was also disappointed to find out he was a liberal
Why does it come as a surprise that many the movie stars are psychologically / characterologically damaged? Isn’t the pathology almost inherent? We should be more surprised when a celebrity is actually a grounded person.
I've heard stories of McQueen's selfishness and jealousy before, and how he continually tried to upstage all of the other actors in The Magnificent Seven. I'd never heard any stories of Bronson, good or bad.
My dad was a huge fan of Steve McQueen. So I started watching his movies. For some reason I just didn't like him. I came across more than one actor, complaining about the behavior of Steve McQueen on set. So, these comments do not surprise me. I watched The Great Escape when I was in college. What a great movie and cast.
Yul Brenner and James Garner both had some issues with Steve McQueen. McQueen was a good actor but he had insecurities acquired in his Childhood and Adolescence that never attended, manifested into personal issues. That tragic because he had great potentials. Discernment rayher than Judgemental.
Love and respected him, but I have to disagree a little about McQueen's acting. He had at least two roles that showed real ability: The Sand Pebbles and Baby the Rain Must Fall.
James Garner also didn't think much of Ronald Reagan, both as an actor and as a politician. Nor did he think much of him when he was president of the Screen Actors Guild. Apparently there was a dark side to James Gardner.
What this video misses is the McQueen and Garner were neighbors. They lived right next door to each other for 15 years. McQueen asked him for advice all the time. And it got on Garner's nerves.
Garner lived next door to Steve and Neile for many years. The real reason Steve held a grudge was, while Steve was in Taiwan filming the Sand Pebbles, Garner got the role in Grand Prix. That Steve thought was his. And he was Furious and felt Betrayed by Garner. That lasted for many years. Garner was a super nice guy and even tempered and was a great husband. He was Mr. Perfect to Steve. And he resented being compared to him off the screen.
Um, Steve McQueen's character is actually trying to escape Germany, jump the barbed wire fence, but doesn't make it. Perhaps whomever wrote this should watch the film. Earlier in the story, his character breaks out by tunneling "like a mole" to get out and then get caught, gathering Intel for the later mass escape.
I think you are the one that's mistaken. Yes, the film clip shown is when he was trying to jump the barbed wire. 2:19 But the character development of doing reconnaissance in the town and purposely being captured is from earlier. Right after Ives is killed during the July 4th celebration.
His politics surprised me the most. Adalai was a cousin of mine. He was academically smart but a moron in practical terms. He was wrong about almost everything because he didn't understand people and was out of touch with political reality. I don't think he ever fell out of love with Lenin or the Soviet Union.
It's not complicated. You want the money, you have to be able to be the character & willing to do that job. It might mean taking time to do 'wetwork' w/good ol' Harvey Weinstein or his own brother. Nepotistic & willing to do anything for the $. It's a dirty business.
Yeah, Rock & Oprah are in need of your money to get Hawaii back to normal (& a sandwich for Stedman; Gail seems to be okay w/being able to sleep in the main house.

I agreed with Garner's assessments of both McQueen & Bronson. Both of those 2 guys seemed to be hard edged & probably difficult to work with.
I worked with Charles Bronson's neice in the mid 80's and she did mention he grew up poor but had a good relationship with him. She stated the tabloids were very unfair which was not surprising them. I quit paying any attention to them after Princess Diana's death.
That would have been a cool fight to watch, Garner vs Bronson. 😀
We absolutely agree! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Be safe and have a great day!

Very True, McQueen was a joke all the guys on and off the set--just a down right low life --my father and all his friends in production in the 60's --never had anything good to say about McQueen --just he was a low life ,actor who wore make up for a living-our dads did all the big films and biker movies--50'60's and 70's James Garner on the other hand was a true prince and loved but everyone in town--
What about Duel At Diablo? It's among my favs!
listening to someone telling us what someone else said is just conjecture, it has nothing to back it up.
WOW great video and all true.

I remember Garner was driving in Hollywood and a car pulled in front of him and slammed on the brakes. Both got out and Garner was beat up severely.
So.
I've read too many stories about McQueen being a douche to think he's cool, he seemed obsessed with looking cool and a lot of people bought it.
Very interesting, thanks for sharing this info about Steve! What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
James Garner one of my personal heroes and role models
Garner radiated a cool, worldly (and world-weary) vibe that was always fun to watch.
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. What other types of video would you like to see?
Tell the truth. Read his biography. Plus records about him back then
James had a temper. He abused his wife Louis. She left him 3 times. Went back till James.
passed.
Good for James that he didn´t get into a clinch with Bronson because Bronson would have wiped the floor with him!
We absolutely agree! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Be safe and have a great day!
@@FactsVerse Bronson was really not easy to work with because he was dissatisfied how his career turned out at the beginning but many stars said that he changed after he become a star and met his wife Jill Ireland. The problem was that James Garner met Bronson when Charlie was not a big star in motion pictures.
I was thinking about Steve McQueen yesterday and this comes up in my feed.
Weird stuff.

Go back to sleep
They were both actors , but only one was iconic, nothing more to be said
Garner attacked McQueen as a tough guy poser and a movie star but not an actor.
Was also disappointed to find out
he was a liberal
You don't know someone until you know someone. And first impressions don't count. 😅
James Garner always seemed like a great guy.
Although McQueen could be a dick, he was a GREAT actor. He could steal a scene from another actor who was doing dialog, with a simple body movement
You believe too much of what you read.
@garygiebler6428 Very eloquent reply, he was your best friend right?
I'm so glad that he kept his politics out of his professional life. I wish more people in Hollywood would do the same.
So true! What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
I have always preferred James Garner over any other actor.

This is Jim Rockford. I am rolling a joint. Go away.
"Cultivated an image of being a macho man"?
He actually was a macho man, it wasnt a put on.
Garner couldn’t carry McQueen’s luggage.
Garner was known for sticking up for the working folks of Hollywood against unfair labor practices of the studios.
Some folks would say he is a Commie because of that.
You did not mention they were next door neighbors
Garner was right about McQueen.
Steve McQueen made the The Great Escape.
One never realizes his insecurities by his performances, does one?
A BLEEDING HEART LIBERAL? What a let down
I think most Hollywood people would agree with him, both were arrogant and rude.
Garner smoked weed huh? Just like Mitchum....lol
McQueen was only good as the rebellious loner in an all-star cast....other than that...eh
I liked James Garner but I can't be doing with Kiss and tell books a load of dirty laundry washed in public after the other person has passed away.
Garner as an actor was great, his leftist views were just disgusting
All that Hollywood fame will obviously affect people in different ways. I would personally accept just the paycheck, they can keep the fame.
Some creep with his hat on backwards wants to sell me a holster..
