Facts verse, Well-done. Good researched bio on James Garner! Thanks for upload. This was interesting what James Garner thought about Steve McQueen. I heard once when they were casting the movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" they first cast Paul Newman as Butch Cassidy and warren Beatty as the Sundance kid but Warren did not want to do it because he did not like to ride horses and thought the movie would be kind of like his "Bonnie and Clyde" buddy movie. Well anyway next cast was Steve McQueen. But Paul and Steve did not get along at all! Maybe McQueen was difficult making some of his movies. Then Robert Redford was cast. Some actors were difficult to work with. Maybe Mcqueen was one of them. I read that Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw did not get along so well doing "Jaws" movie either. But it got done like "The Great escape" movie Great channel.

All three were competitive. All three were racing enthusiasts. PLN would go on to have a better racing career than the other two. He was active into the early 2000"s. Not much is known to most people about Garners racing days but he was thoroughly immersed in the sport mostly as an owner. Some people don't know about Dick Smothers racing career about the same time frame.
I never saw Maverick, except in an occasional rerun….. And I think the best episodes were the ones with Bret Maverick (Garner) Rockford was like Maverick, only he didn’t gamble….. They were both great shows
I really liked James Garner especially in the show Maverick and the Rockford files. Those were two great shows. I also like him the movie Maverick with Mel Gibson. That was a solid 8 stars movie that I've seen several time. Now I going to have to watch it again after this, LOL.
I was named after James Garner’s character Brett Maverick. He was my father’s FAVE actor or so i was informed. Before the advent of the internet i only encountered one individual named Brett. Now every third person is named Brett! Or so it seems! Love love love JG in all his roles….RIP.
Garner was a very underrated actor. Using very little to convey a lot. There's a great piece of off set film from Gran Prix where Garner loses it with a store owner who is holding the production to ransom. Garner is nose to nose with the guy saying if he doesn't stop he's gonna regret it.. You must understand that was a very rare occurrence.
Garner and McQueen were friends. When John Frankenheimer wanted McQueen for Grand Prix McQueen was in Taiwan filming The Sand Pebbles for Robert Wise. The Sand Pebbles production was delayed and McQueen couldn’t make it in time for when Grand Prix started production so McQueen recommended his friend Garner who was also a racing enthusiast and Grand Prix filmed in 1966 was one of Garner’s best performances. It is also in my opinion one of the two best films about racing tied with Ford VS Ferrari. With the cinematic technology available to John Frankenheimer and his masterful talent for a 57 year old film it still gives Ford VS Ferrari a run for it’s money if you’ll pardon the pun😉!
During his years on the Rockford Files, the studio, as a cost-cutting measure, stated it would no longer buy coffee for the crew....so Garner said he would buy the coffee. Yeah, I know, he could well afford it. But how many other stars would have thought to do the same?
I met James Garner in April, 1963, when he was shooting a scene from his movie, "The Wheeler Dealers" at Idlewild Airport (later JFK), NYC! At age 35, he was ruggedly handsome & quite tall! While I spoke to him, between takes, he seemed nervous & "chain-smoked" non-stop!/ Garner was a top t.v. actor, but it's a shame that he was not able to transmit that affable personality to becoming a more major motion picture star! R.I.P.!
I have heard and read that McQueen was not likable or easy to work with and during his final years, many in Hollywood did not want to work with him. I'm not surprised about his dislike of McQueen, Bronson, and Heston. All three were staunch conservatives even though Charlton Heston was at first a Democrat then changed his tune.
2 things you didn’t mention One of Garner’s first films was Sayonara where he played Marlon Brando’s BF. Garner was extremely nervous in his first scene with Brando and said Brando couldn’t have been more helpful to calm his nerves. They’d often work out scenes together and he always wished they could’ve done more films together Garner turned down the role of Garrett Breedlove in Terms of Endearment because he didn’t trust the director and always said it was the dumbest move of his career (Burt Reynolds turned it down too and said the same thing)
Those were the days when movies had real action plus a plot. Some of the garbage we are being forced to watch is being snuck into viewers minds thru deception.
I never really knew Garner except for Maverick when I was a child and some films, I have never seen The Rockford Files. My two favourite actors have always been Bogart and McQueen, both from different periods. McQueen was very 'watchable' in his roles. Naturally, one never knows one's favourite actors except for on the screen. I completely disagree though with Garner's view on McQueen's acting, for me, he was a great actor. As for Bronson, I always felt that he was an actor maybe difficult to work with, maybe that changed later for him, I felt the change in his 'Death Wish' roles, he seemed to have mellowed. Each actor was a star in his own right. People have their favourites, Bogart and McQueen were mine, but I liked many other actors like Bronson, James Coburn, Robert Vaughan, Lee J Cobb, Marlon Brando etc, etc. So many actors who brought something special to the screen.
i think i will read the J.G. book myself,an form some opinions. one note; J.G. did work very hard to make his presence on T.V. and movies seem natural. I say he was a perfectionists, and not as laid back as many have reported of Mr. Garner over the years. As far as his drug use. it is really non of my business. J.G. was a combat Korean Veteran, and only other Vets know what combat does to a person. I enjoyed his movies, and admirer him for staying married, and raising his family. As far as his political views,or how he felt about religious matters, thats some of the great things about living in America. We are free to whorship and practice our beliefs anyway we so choose. R.I.P. James Garner.
MY personal favorite film of James Garner : The 1966 Western., " Duel At Diablo" . it's a great film,. well done, with a real message. Garner & Sidney Poitier, were both superb. ------------MJL, 76 y/o
Really, liked the stars you talked about. They are only human, we all have faults and I am sure if we are honest, I am sure that most of the problems these people had could be applied to us as well.
never liked McQueen much myself. He used to beat up the women he was involved with, and demanded that Ali McGraw gave up her career to be the little housewife. He was really not a great guy.
I always like James. He was a good, friendly looking guy, that made it hard not to like him. I think most of the Hollywood crowd falls into similar categories. We like them for the parts they play. We feel we know them but we don’t know squat about them really. Chances are there are better people in the audience than the stars on the screen. We just don’t know them. Unfortunately we are all sucked into people in the spotlight that can talk or act. Just like all the politicians out there that don’t really serve the people but are able to say things that sound good but are seldom delivered.
James was the vice president of the actors union for a while. He said the then president Ronald Reagan was a mindless idiot and that he had to do all of the work.
I Like James Garner a lot, but it was well-known he was jealous of McQueen who was the number one box office star for multiple years. Garner was a very good actor maybe better than McQueen but he never was a Super Star like Steve McQueen.
I liked James Garner but I can’t say much for his political views. Lol. I loved his Polaroid commercials with Mariette Hartley. Actually I really liked Steve McQueen, too.
Steve’s wife was on Rockford several times. Steve was a insecure and paranoid guy. He was the king of cool but he was paranoid. It may have been the drugs.
Well considering they both were in The Great Escape together it seems you might be a bit hyperbolic and butt hurt. Maverick ( both movie and series), Victor, Victoria, The Notebook, Murphy's Romance, Space Cowboys, Support your Local Sheriff, 8 simple rules, Divine secrets of ya ya Sisterhood are all well known , popular, and successful movies.
That’s sorta true, Garner made more of an impression on TV than movies. Some actors just work better in tv than film. That said, check out Garner in The Great Escape, but also Grand Prix, The Thrill of It All, Twilight and Space Cowboys
@@jennifersman7990 Move over Darling Hour of the Gun, Duel at Diablo the comedy films Support your local Sheriff & Support your local Gunfighter not seen Garner in one bad film amongst many others
On the set of " The Great Escape", it wasn't only Garner who was fed up with McQueen, it was also James Coburn, Charles Bronson, & all of the British cast, who found McQueen appallingly insecure, childish, & spoiled. They all pretty much despised him. Totally understandable. McQueen WAS horribly insecure & immature. --------
Coburn, Bronson, McQueen, many of these actors were very mercurial in nature. No doubt the sets were difficult to manage by the director. Can you imagine trying to manage a film with so many stars on set? Somewhat of a miracle.
I worked with Charles Bronson's neice in the mid 80's and she did mention he grew up poor but had a good relationship with him. She stated the tabloids were very unfair which was not surprising them. I quit paying any attention to them after Princess Diana's death.
Not surprised at all.... because they all had big egos ! I've heard about all this before. It's also been known that Garner could blow his top at times. It happened while filming Grand Prix. Which I think was one of his best if not the best movies...next to The Great Escape. All of them were terrific actors though. 👍👍
Jim Garner was a class act,and a kind hearted, decent human being. I had the pleasure of meeting him before he passed. He.was also a far better actor than Steve McQueen was,and I also am a Steve McQueen fan,but James Garner will always be my favorite. He was great in everything he was ever in wether on the big ot small screen. "The Rockford Files" will always one of the very best televsision shows ever made and certainly the best show of the 70's. Rest in Peace Jim,thanks for all the memories
Always liked James Rockf oh wait James Garner. I loved Grand Prix at 7yrs old when it primered at the giant curved screen theater downtown. But I also loved Steve McQueen's LeMans in 1971 so what do I know? He used to make this Coffee commercial with this well known actress whose name I've forgotten. Even in my pre-teen self thought they were very smartly acted.
Whenever you get strong, male, self-important personalities together, there is of course, bound to be friction. Try to imagine being director John Sturges directing all these testosterone filled, male lead actors in "The Great Escape"? Now, that's leadership, I think.
Garner was twice wounded in a Korea. Talked about on a morning talk show, and mentioned he didn’t receive a second Purple Heart, but didn’t know the reason. It was investigated and he received the second award. The photograph can be found online
One interesting fact is there were no Americans involved in the great escape and the characters were only put in the film for the American movie audience.
McQueen was a natural actor and never needed to say much to make a great scene. He was of the belief that "less was more" and would use less words and let the action do the talking.
I just finished James Garner's book. James and Steve McQueen had a love/hate relationship. They actually lived right next to each other. Their properties shared a border and Steve would throw beer cans over the wall onto James' property, which of course pissed James off.
I love James Garner and I’ve never been a Steve McQueen fan. I think Sand Pebbles is a very good movie and I think McQueen’s best movie. McQueen was no actor, that’s for sure.
I've always liked James Garner. He was a huge Raiders fan and (as rumor had it) after a loss someone cut him off in traffic, he flipped them off and kept at the guy... the two pulled over and Garner got the living sh*t kicked out of him.
Tell the truth. Read his biography. Plus records about him back then James had a temper. He abused his wife Louis. She left him 3 times. Went back till James. passed.
I could never see the attraction of McQueen. He played being Steve McQueen better than anyone else ever could but had no range or unique acting style for me he was just a spoiled brat playing a contrived character he should have lived long enough to be given the boot.
I’m pretty sure he was a Card Carrying Socialist and probably a Communist Sympathizer since he admired Adlai Stevenson. He openly admitted he was a Bleeding Heart Liberal. Likable on most fronts other than that, IMHO.
I had read a few years back that Garner and McQueen at one point lived along the same street. As a prank, once McQueen watched Garner drive away then filled Garner's driveway with trash, and watched with amusement the anguish when Garner returned.
McQueen was the king cool posers celebrated by guys who couldn't get dates in high school and thought that squinting and acting like a dick was how you impressed girls. James Garner was actually cool and always treating people with respect, not an a-hole poser. I met Garner as a kid when he was filming an episode if the Rockford Files in Corona Del Mar and he answered all of my stupid questions patiently and respectfully. A truly class act.
My dad was a huge fan of Steve McQueen. So I started watching his movies. For some reason I just didn't like him. I came across more than one actor, complaining about the behavior of Steve McQueen on set. So, these comments do not surprise me. I watched The Great Escape when I was in college. What a great movie and cast.
While I understand and sympathize with James Garner's frustration at dealing with an ill-tempered Steve McQueen, I disagree with his assertion that McQueen was not a good actor. All one has to do is to watch "The Sand Pebbles" or "Papillon" to see McQueen's dynamic range and depth as an actor and realize he was much more than just a Hollywood star.
No I felt the same way about McQueen that he acted like the world owed him everything maybe because of his up bringing as a kid but that is also why he treated women like garbage I think because he took out on them for what his mother had done. His looks and charm what little he had will still light up the eyes of every woman till they had a good look inside the man, hell he didn't even like Keith Moon the drummer of the who that lived next door to him because the lights from Keith's home would shine in his windows and Keith loved to party. I' sure if I ever worked with McQueen we most certainly would have came to a lot more then just words and it would have been very bad, but he was a good actor and add libber so I can't take that away from him, just a shame he couldn't act more like a person.
I wonder what was his impression of Doris Day. The two did two romantic comedies together and he was at that point a substitute for Rock Hudson as Day's love interest.

@@FactsVerse How about some James bond girls. from "Thunderball" Luciana Paluzzi and Claudine Auger. And from "On her majesty's secret service' and the series "The Avengers" Diana Rigg. Or Ursula Andress from "Dr. No". Doing one or a bit of all would be fine. Thanks very much! Love your channel.
And I think the best episodes were the ones with Bret Maverick (Garner)
Rockford was like Maverick, only he didn’t gamble…..
They were both great shows
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. What other types of video would you like to see?
I really liked James Garner especially in the show Maverick and the Rockford files. Those were two great shows. I also like him the movie Maverick with Mel Gibson. That was a solid 8 stars movie that I've seen several time. Now I going to have to watch it again after this, LOL.
Maverick & Rockford Files!! Watched with my Dad long time ago. Born in 1948.

@@FactsVerse I like videos about Skinwalker Ranch, Oak Island, and about different and strange paranormal investigations.
I always thought his Marlowe movie role was really good. And Support your Local Sheriff is a underrated comedy classic, in my view.
Garner was basically a latter day Spencer Tracy. He didn't look he was trying too hard but he did what an actor was supposed to do.
I met James Garner in April, 1963, when he was shooting a scene from his movie, "The Wheeler Dealers" at
Idlewild Airport (later JFK), NYC! At age 35, he was ruggedly handsome & quite tall! While I spoke to him,
between takes, he seemed nervous & "chain-smoked" non-stop!/ Garner was a top t.v. actor, but it's a shame
that he was not able to transmit that affable personality to becoming a more major motion picture star! R.I.P.!
Fun stuff, thanks for sharing! What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?

Yea you find out there human just like us
Enjoyed James Garner's work, especially Maverick but I'm still in love with Steve McQueen. 😸
Great celebrities! In your opinion, what is Steve's best role?
Steve McQueen as Mr. Box Office. Picked his projects carefully and passed over some great roles making other people very famous.
Great presentation Facts Verse!! Thank you very much. Peace

Garner was a union man and a progressive as well as an excellent actor both in TV and film.
Thank you so much for your beautiful message for James. Which of his roles appealed to you the most?
Progressive can mean many things . I m not sure they all apply to Jim
Excellent comment.
McQueen was also famously a 'scene stealer' - he butted heads with co-stars like Yul Brynner over this.
I think you're mistaken about Bronson's political views.
Thank you so much for sharing this info about Steve. What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
2 things you didn’t mention
One of Garner’s first films was Sayonara where he played Marlon Brando’s BF. Garner was extremely nervous in his first scene with Brando and said Brando couldn’t have been more helpful to calm his nerves. They’d often work out scenes together and he always wished they could’ve done more films together
Garner turned down the role of Garrett Breedlove in Terms of Endearment because he didn’t trust the director and always said it was the dumbest move of his career (Burt Reynolds turned it down too and said the same thing)
Those were the days when movies had real action plus a plot. Some of the garbage we are being forced to watch is being snuck into viewers minds thru deception.
James Garner, always likeable whatever he's in and made Jim Rockford my hero.
As well as James Garner, Julie Andrews' favorite performance is THE AMERICANIZATION OF EMILY.
James Garner effortlessly charmed audiences with his laid-back style and wit, defining cool in Hollywood
i think i will read the J.G. book myself,an form some opinions. one note; J.G. did work very hard to make his presence on T.V. and movies seem natural.
Thank you so much for your beautiful message for James. Which of his roles appealed to you the most?
Oliver Reed said McQueen was a wimp I liked him with A. McGraw
MY personal favorite film of James Garner : The 1966 Western., " Duel At Diablo" . it's a great film,. well done, with a real message. Garner & Sidney Poitier, were both superb. ------------MJL, 76 y/o

McQueen’s first wife was Neile and it was pronounced “Neal” not “Nellie”.
Really, liked the stars you talked about.
They are only human, we all have faults and I am sure if we are honest, I am sure that most of the problems these people had could be applied to us as well.
We absolutely agree! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Be safe and have a great day!
Good point. Glad you made that comment.
never liked McQueen much myself. He used to beat up the women he was involved with, and demanded that Ali McGraw gave up her career to be the little housewife. He was really not a great guy.

McQueen also tried to upstage Yul Brynner in The Magnificent Seven, not a good legacy.
Very interesting, thank you so much for sharing this info about James. What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
I Like James Garner a lot, but it was well-known he was jealous of McQueen who was the number one box office star for multiple years. Garner was a very good actor maybe better than McQueen but he never was a Super Star like Steve McQueen.
I liked James Garner but I can’t say much for his political views. Lol. I loved his Polaroid commercials with Mariette Hartley. Actually I really liked Steve McQueen, too.
That’s exactly how I feel too!
Couldn't agree more! Thank you for sharing your views on this. What other types of video would you like to see?
Steve’s wife was on Rockford several times. Steve was a insecure and paranoid guy. He was the king of cool but he was paranoid. It may have been the drugs.
I think it was just insecurity.
Some of Steve McQueen's movies are timeless and totally memorable. I can't even name a Garner movie, just Maverick on TV
@@auntiewewe972 You still haven't named anything memorable exc. Maverick which you neglected to notice that I already mentioned, bozo

Well Steve McQueen was correct about his role in The Great Escape. With the requested changes, him ridding the motorbike made that film.
Steves guts were right about the movie Great Escape...Those motorcycle scenes made the movie.

worked with Garner in '83 in my first film , " TANK " ...
Very interesting, thanks for sharing this info about Steve! What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
Coburn, Bronson, McQueen, many of these actors were very mercurial in nature. No doubt the sets were difficult to manage by the director. Can you imagine trying to manage a film with so many stars on set? Somewhat of a miracle.
I agreed with Garner's assessments of both McQueen & Bronson. Both of those 2 guys seemed to be hard edged & probably difficult to work with.
Managing the bunch who stared in The Magnificent Seven was pretty tough too.🤪🤣
Garner was twice wounded in a Korea.
In the movie Papillion- McQueens acting skillset was very compelling=the going bat shit crazy scenes.
Steve McQueen was a huge movie star and James Garner was jealous !!!!
McQueen was a natural actor and never needed to say much to make a great scene. He was of the belief that "less was more" and would use less words and let the action do the talking.
Ridiculous
I just finished James Garner's book. James and Steve McQueen had a love/hate relationship. They actually lived right next to each other. Their properties shared a border and Steve would throw beer cans over the wall onto James' property, which of course pissed James off.
Interesting, thanks for sharing this info about James and Steve! Which of their roles appealed to you the most?
I always thought McQueen was super cool until I read a biography about him and couldn't believe what a "dick" he was.
I love James Garner and I’ve never been a Steve McQueen fan. I think Sand Pebbles is a very good movie and I think McQueen’s best movie. McQueen was no actor, that’s for sure.
Interesting, thanks for sharing your favorite! What is your most memorable role of James?
I've always liked James Garner. He was a huge Raiders fan and (as rumor had it) after a loss someone cut him off in traffic, he flipped them off and kept at the guy... the two pulled over and Garner got the living sh*t kicked out of him.
Always an easy performer to watch and seemed quite likable with little pretensions.
Tell the truth. Read his biography. Plus records about him back then
James had a temper.
Yes, I agree with Garner on that score. A movie star, not an actor.
I don't know why, but I'm actually more impressed with Garner after learning that he smoked weed and did coke.
Smoked cigarettes too.
Garner earned two Purple Hearts in Korea. Great guy and actor all around, but can’t say much about his politics.
I like his movie " Barbarians at the Gate" Like most people I thought his screen presence always made the movie

As I understand it, Garner’s service in Korea was during the Korean War & he was wounded - shot in the gluteus Maximus.
James was my most favourite character in "Maverick"

While I understand and sympathize with James Garner's frustration at dealing with an ill-tempered Steve McQueen, I disagree with his assertion that McQueen was not a good actor. All one has to do is to watch "The Sand Pebbles" or "Papillon" to see McQueen's dynamic range and depth as an actor and realize he was much more than just a Hollywood star.
Thanks for watching! We're glad to know that you love our video. What other types of video would you like to see on Facts Verse?
They were both actors , but only one was iconic, nothing more to be said
No I felt the same way about McQueen that he acted like the world owed him everything maybe because of his up bringing as a kid but that is also why he treated women like garbage I think because he took out on them for what his mother had done.
Sounds like Garner served the best interests of the movie, while McQueen served his own interests.
Garner was also a decorated soldier in Korea. Kinda glossed over that here.

I wonder what was his impression of Doris Day. The two did two romantic comedies together and he was at that point a substitute for Rock Hudson as Day's love interest.
