I don't comment very often but I have to admit. I think this is THE best video of studying I've seen so far (and I've seen quite a few). I'm currently in medical school and throughout the years I've tried multiple studying techniques, tried to use some that I found online and others I've come up with, but this video really breaks it down to what is really important. You show examples, use graphs, the quality of the video is amazing. I truly believe you are going to help loads of people and you're gonna grow so much in this platform. Thank you so much for the video, I watched it fully, subscribed and turned on the notifications my dude. Brilliant job

I must say, I agree with the comments here! I love how you give specific examples on how you apply the principles of spaced repetition. I also definitely love the practicality of all this. As an engineering student who chose to pursue medicine, the approach needed for studying is very different. I always look for youtube videos on study tips but I think I made the mistake of checking ONLY videos from med students. I did learn a lot from those videos but I am able to "connect" with this video the most -- a video by a law student! Thanks a lot!

Excellent video! I love the way you stress that you can't really learn something when you haven't forgotten it in the first place.
I like to compare the brain to a computer. The RAM represents the short-term memory (small & fast) whilst the hard drive and SSD represent the long-term memory (large & slow). You can't store an entire semester of courses in your short-term memory, so you write them to your hard drive. Then, you have to practice to access your hard drive quickly, that is, replacing the information from your conventional hard drive to your super fast SSD.

(For reference, I study medicine in UK). The reason Ali has a slightly different approach (in terms of doing “random topics”), is because in medicine (both in exams and as a doctor) all content is very integrated and actually is fairly jumbled and mixed up within each individual case; part of the challenge is linking various topics together. From my understanding, law is different in the sense that each topic/area seems to be fairly explicit from another (eg. land law is probably not often crossed over with corporate). But either way, still a great video and I will definitely implement this.

Your tips are very useful, but I'd like you to talk a little bit slowly, because at certain points you talked so fast that I wasn't able to follow you and I got lost at many key points of the video. Hehe- I am truly honoured to hold the esteemed title of ‘Chu’s favourite nerd’ 😂🤗🤗
And when you’re studying, it’s a really good idea to have breaks every 45-90 minutes of between 10-20 mins to make sure you have something to look forward to and work towards while you’re studying!
But, I would recommend studying multiple topics on the same day to ensure that you can rotate between topics and gain the benefits of forgetting before you return to study that topic again!
      Does that make sense? 🤗

Liam Porritt Thanks for the reply Liam! Actually I meant the “break” mentioned in your miraculous study plan: the break between study bursts which varies from 7-10 days to 3-5 days as one progresses with the repetitions. Not sure what one should do during this break time...
Haha the title of “favorite nerd” is well deserved! 😉

Ahhhhhh yep- sorry! I was a little confused!! You should absolutely be doing other topics during that time! The idea is that you cycle through the different topics (e.g. reproduction in biology), doing each topic a few times over the course of a few days, and then leaving longer and longer “breaks” between each topic burst (I.e. each time you cover reproduction a few times over the course of a couple of days). During these “breaks”, you’ll be doing the topic bursts of other topics!! Does that makes sense?

Liam Porritt Yes it makes perfect sense! So basically keeping feeding the brain new information points while tricking it to retain the old ones when they are just about to fade away. Is that correct? :P

    • @liam.porritt
      @liam.porritt  4 года назад +1

Yup - that's exactly it! And then once you've fed your brain new information once, that becomes the 'old information' you trick it to remember just as it's fading away :)

Wow! Thanks for the video. I know Spaced repetition and Active Recall since long time but I haven't been able to implement them yet successfully. I try for a few days , give up and go back to my bad old study habits.
I will definitely use these tips you have given and I hope I don't give up this time. :D

Hi Liam, love your vids! As a tip on the brain-splurge I'd like to recommend to write the things you forgot in green instead of red. Its been proven that this creates a more positive vibe and makes it easier to remember! This since red is a colour our brain associates with danger/warning/mistakes/etc.

Thanks so much Martijn! Oooh yeh- I had heard that and I’ll give it a go! I personally just find red stuff sticks in my mind, but will give doing it in green a try! 🤗🤗

5:46 yes I do remember doing something like that. While I moved on the next chapter, every 15 to 30 mins I went back to the first chapter because the info was more challenging.

Since you mentioned Ali, I must say I do find it easier to follow him,for one he does not speak at a speed of 1 million words a sec. Secondly following his advise I have managed to up my GCSE grades from a 7 to 9 in 8 subjects in 2019. I am now doing my A levels and continue to use Ali s revision techniques and continue to score often the highest marks in my year and do so effortlessly & all thanks to Ali s videos. To be honest I don’t know Ali,never met him but watching his videos motivated me, helped me immensely with my revision and I do find him very likeable,he comes across as a nice honest guy on RUclips which leads to my question- is there any particular personal reason that you are trying to undermine Ali through this video? Heard you mention you don’t agree with him? So what? I am sure no one is expecting you to agree with you. People are looking for original ideas!
I could be wrong but most of your videos appear to be a copy of Ali s video, same content.
He posts a video and then much later you post one with usually exact content? 🧐Often basically a copy of his content when it comes to revision and study help videos.
But why then would you undermine Ali or to be precise make a point of stating you disagree with him as if that matters in this video? Don’t understand that. Never seen Ali do that to anyone in his video. It is much better just to post videos on what your suggestion and ideas on revision & study skills are rather than make a point of stating you don’t think another RUclipsr is right , it does smack of trying to steal his viewers just .
Who cares whether you agree or not? You have taken most of his content until recently and posted as your video,if you have an original idea ,post it as your own ,no need to undermine someone else. Pity! This could have been a good video but undermining another RUclipsr (who is perhaps more successful than you) smacks of jealousy and whether it’s intentional or not doesn’t gel with me.

I’m friends with Ali, discussed this video with him, and justify why I disagree with his video on Spaced Repetition in one regard. Think Ali’s a great guy, makes great videos, and I’m trying to share my own ideas, some of which overlap with the scientifically proven strategies Ali also shares 😊

Hi Liam, It’s probably too long to leave you a comment about this subject. But there is a very interesting book concerning about that called ‘Make it stick’. A lot of your indications and techiniques find scientific bases in there. Tnx for the video and congrats for your recent grades!
