We travel as far as we are allowed on The Chesterfield Canal. The end is closed due to reservoir maintenance and water shortages. But still we walk what we can't cruise.
We are Fran and Rich and along with our two Dogs, Archie and Jess we travel the Canals and Rivers of the UK on our 58ft Narrow Boat.

I find your videos so relaxing to watch. While the rest of humanity seems to want to go faster and further, four miles an hour in your lovely home seems to be paradise. Thanks!
The world does go too fast. The slower you go, the more you see.
Absolutely love these videos, you are both looking great , let him have a beer in the pub ❤
A NICE LITTLE TRIP ON THE OLD CANAL...HOPE THEY GET IT ALL CLEANED UP ONE DAY...
I really enjoy your music selections 🎼🎵
Thank you
What a beautiful blog from such a beautiful canal thank you 💕
At time 6:20, that music, I felt like I was about to hear Neil Young! Anyway nice hearing Richard’s fine voice. Keep healing up Fran.
Love a bit of Neil Young
The Erewash is great for wildlife. I once described it as 'boating on an aquarium'.
Great description, it was just like that on the Chesterfield
Another lovely video - a bit of everything .. especially like the first music (Sundown Drifter)... it invokes 1970s jam session memories
Glad you enjoyed it
Boat's looking great.
Jamson dam, Hops too they make nice wreaths but Rich will tell you they make beer better or really Better beer.
Glad to see youre eliminating as much plastic as possible with that lady supplying in bulk. We have a fabulous chain here called the Bulk Barn, they sell everything from soup to nuts and even glass storage jars etc in all shapes and sizes so we buy a lot of stuff there. Jeanette bought some wool from an Alpacca farm also some Mohair Goat wool from another place and made a cardigan to die for in mid winter. The owner makes Santa beards and sells hundreds in the US. Do you spin a lot of wool for your weaving?
You're the first I've seen on that canal it sure is very bucolic, lovely scenery. We have quite a few of those Pin oaks at the Cottage but if you don't rake up the leaves they sure kill the grass. Another lovely vlog thanks so much .
Take care happy cruising ,till next time.
Best regards from me and Canada where 95% have power again after "Fiona"
Hi Ralph. It certainly was a bucolic canal. We were very happy there. I have just started spinning so only using a little to enhance my weaving at the moment, but hoping to do more as I get better
From the music and the scenery and your obvious joy at relaxing in the countryside, it's easy to see you are in your element after all the urban adventures of the last videos!
Absolutely right
,looking forward to next video
That was so beautiful to watch.
Thank you
Greetings from the Pacific Northwest USA.
I would like to Thank You for your videos , I find them relaxing and I enjoy seeing the English countryside.
Thank you for taking us along ☺️
I just love your vlog it takes the boredom out of live thanks again. 😀
Thank you Frank
Thanks for the view of your walk
Nice photography
Thank you both I enjoyed your Vlog it was Beautiful xx
Really glad that you enjoyed your visit to the Chessie….I just wish you could have sailed up to Norwood Tunnel to get your Head of Navigation plaque from the Chesterfield Canal Trust….it was great pleasure to see you both for our little chat…happy cruising…hope your legs getting better Fran
It was lovely to meet you too, maybe we will return when it is all open.
Thanks!
Thank you so much William , this is appreciated so much xx
Thank you for this lovely video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Please rub Arnica cream on your leg 3 times a day Fran and it draws out all the bruising etc also maybe use a hiking cane or stick for a little while.. hope its better soon, Girl of my own heart. I love walking too and hate being unable to be mobile
John Keats Ode to Autumn, “season of mists and mellow fruitfulness “
The joy using distilled vinegar is that once the cloth or yarn is dry and the pan you've used is dry the vinegar smell goes away I used to rinse my hair in it when I was a little girl my hair was very long long enough to sit on and very straight and rinsing it in vinegar mixed with water I could take a comb and comb through it and all the tangles would come out
Nice to meet you this morning.Have a lovely walk.👍
Summer, I remember it well. I did the Chesterfield during lockdown, so it was two months at the services!
You did the right thing catching the train and walking back to the boat because the countryside was stunning. I was at the Bridge House pub next to the canal at Little Venice earlier this year and I peered into the wonderfully clear water from the bridge and spied massive Carp swimming in the shade. Thanks, guys for that lovely Vlog very enjoyable.❤️
It is wonderful when you come across a canal with such clear water.
Lovely canal walk - great scenery x
Glad you enjoyed it, hope you get to cruise there some day
Hi Fran Rich, what a beautiful canal you said lots of fish the water must be clear ,Fran you said you hurt your leg you be careful you only get two you know lol ,so you been collecting plums etc what you going to do with your hops ? You know so much about what you can and cannot eat of the banks you must do a lot of research then ,the dogs was enjoying themselves never knew you could mark dye out of elderberry how interesting well this has been very interesting blog most enjoyable in many ways so till next time take care keep yourself safe,John 🌹🤔👀😂🥱👌😚🤣
Thank you John. I have so much fun finding out what I can do or make with wild plants. I did mean to make a hop garland for the bedroom to help us sleep, but we have had so many huge spiders that I'm afraid of giving them anywhere else to hide ! Thanks for watching
As always a lovely edited video very relaxing and always enjoyable.
Thank you very much!
Wow that water was so clear.
It was like that all the way along this canal
I'm finally caught up but now I'll have to wait for new vlogs to be uploaded!
Remember back in the sixties digging spuds on a Sunday morning with my Grandad for lunch so different from what you buy. Our daughter has two spinning wheels which she use to produce yarn for crochet. We like you left some 'mushrooms ' as I would like to draw my pension for a bit longer. Still making your fruit loaf. Thanks.
There is nothing loke digging fresh veg and eating it an hour or so later
Just catching up on your posts, what a lovely serene jaunt that is.
Hope the leg is healing up Fran. Rich I'd have been all over that hops mate, I would have seen some lovely Ale in my future.. 😉
So i'm not sure how long i have been subbed and watching you, but it is now 2023 Feb, and i am binge watching all from the beginning, last vlog comment was about your swim Fran and your piloting Rich.
Just under 2 weeks to binge watch to here, and i have already seen this post. Catching up fast.
Have you tried dying wool with onion skins Fran? Such a great free resource if you cook with onions, and an amazing range of colour possibilities!
Next year I hope to try more natural dying so will definitely have a go. Thank you
I see you have picked up on the “super excited, super happy” as well. I thought it was just me!
I don't actually like the phrase but it seems to have stuck even with me 😊
I sat here at my kitchen table watching this vlog and cutting up figs and tomatoes, and pulling grapes off the vine to go into my food dryer. All foraged from my suburban yard. I felt like a kindred spirit!
That sounds perfect x
Other Great video getting better and better, country side very nice to
Thanks! 😃
Beautiful video. Enjoyed very much 😊
Glad you enjoyed it
I love how you use maps so I can work out where you are!
Glad you like them!
Hope we see new video & that you are both doing well
I’m so happy Fran is doing better! Lovely video. Thank you 🙏
We wish you would post more often ..but we hope your enjoying your life.
Sorry Christine. The videos take so much time to film and edit that we often need to take some time just to live the life and enjoy it. There will be another video soon x
You are in my neck of the woods , we have friends with a boat on the Chesterfield canal , Really enjoyed watching, Newark is a lovely place to, as you know, am about 30 mins from the river Trent , and I would not like it at all , it looks so wild , Take care ,🙃🍷
Welcome to my neck of the woods! It is a beautiful canal and there are a few watering holes at Shireoaks and further on from there. You showed the clutter in the fields around a derelict house - we were once walking past and the owner was cycling up after he'd been to Worksop for his shopping - he was 80+ then so I'm not sure if he's still alive now! Also the beautiful Turnerwood with the big houses - if only........!
All the best to you both and thanks for your lovely vlogs xxx
Thank you Jackie. That is interesting about the derelict house. It certainly looked abandoned, so I guess the poor chap is no longer with us. Thanks for watching
Another beautiful video! The Chesterfield Canal looks so fabulous and the wealth of hedgerow berries and wild fruits is unbelievable. Perhaps one day I'll make it to the Chesterfield Canal, but failing that I can (and have) hugely enjoyed your video. Thank you so much, as always!
You are welcome Barney, so glad you enjoyed it
For a couple to recognise your boat and to come back with fresh organic veg.. what a lovely gesture. There are some wonderful people left in this world.
You are right, despite the troubles around us, the world is still full of good people.
Enjoyable vlog as usual and different weather to match. I was out walking along the Leeds Liverpool canal near top lock, Wheelton, Lancs.
Because the water was low and no boats through, it was clear, and I noticed shoals of fish all along. Never seen them before because its always murky looking. . Like your plastic saving job. Have a good weekend.
Great vlog lovely walk think you should write a book next and a receipt book have a great weekend
If only we had the time
Such a pretty canal! And I do love to see all of Fran's projects. Her enthusiasm is catching. I want to get on with some projects of my own now.
I just love making use of what the world offers us. Good luck with your projects.
Great vlog and wecome back cos its been awhile good to see you both doing so well. Pity you had to turn back but thanks to the train you let us see the end of the navigation. look forward to you next vlog Fran is going to be busy making all kinds of hobby and house hold projects and rich can paint the days away great life for both of you two special people, and your dogs who have lots of new places to explore and run around in. Ed 40 S of Vegas.
Thank you!! 😊
I’m in Pennsylvania USA and grew up with a pin oak in our backyard 🌳My mom still lives in that house and the tree is beautiful and massive! My kids have fond memories of raking leaf piles to jump into 🍂
How lovely to have a tree with so many family memories attached.
Looks lovely there,,, so so nice,,,
👍👍
Another nice vlog guys,,,
Thank you 😊
It's the prettiest canal in the region. We cycled it when it's length was covered in wild garlic, the picture is now my screen saver! Fantastic cafes and such friendly canal users 💗
Wonderful
try using salt to fix dye
good vid on cut thanks lee
The Pin Oak is Quercus palustris. They do have acorns but because they were generally planted as landscaping trees they often don't have other trees close enough for pollination. The flowers come early april/may and the acorns can take upto 18 months to mature. They can be cross pollinated with a red oak (Quercus rubra). Best wishes.
That's really interesting. Thank you.
I think I have just had some logs delivered, looks very like Q. palustris
What a wonderful walk along the canal. Currently stuck inside suffering from Covid, so this has cheered me up. I'm an avid crafter, so would love to see more of Frans dyeing, spinning and weaving. Aswell as Richards art. The little bits I've seen I love ❤️
We keep meaning to film more of this, maybe over the winter.
Hope everything is OK have not had any vlogs for a while missing them take care
We are fine thank you Nigel. Just needed some time to catch up with ourselves for a while but there will be another video soon.
All this English nature does make us expats wistful - thanks a ton!
Excellent Know the Kiveton section.well Used to live nearby
It is so lovely there, what a great place to live.
Keep an eye on the swelling of your leg..rest up and take care. Love the idea of plastic free and oh, that jazzy music 😄Thank you for sharing 😊
😊 thank you
Hi, Okay tell me more about the Elderberry Rob, I'm intrigued by it. Is there a recipe Fran, it sounds very soothing. Hi Rich, can't leave you out fella.. Rosehip syrup wasn't that Delrosa that made that. I remember that now you have opened my memory bank.
This is the recipe I use for Elderberry Rob, but I add the spices to the pan at the beginning of the recipe. It has been shown to fight off viruses and improve recovery time. It always works for us.
herbalmed.blogs.lincoln.ac.uk/2010/09/20/elderberry-rob/
The Chesterfield is a gorgeous canal (and we aren't just saying that because we moor there lol). Once you get into a rhythm the locks up to the top are not that arduous and well worth the effort. The wildlife is stunning as you said and there are otters too :) Please come back one day, perhaps when the canal is all joined back up (2027 is the target).
We would love to come back especially when it is restored. We missed the otters😣
Well done, enjoyed the vlog. Hope your leg gets well soon Fran
Thanks so much
Hi fran and Rich, hope you both are well, I have not been on here for 8 months Knee opp and rundown, BUT come right now I thInk, I have enjoyed this video, sounds like you are both enjoying life, I will keep an eye on the gentle fun. Regards .. John in New Zealand.. kaiora.
Hope youre feeling better John and the knee is healing up. Good to hear from you again
I live near Leeds Liverpool in place called Calverley and often walk along Towpath
VERY short of water
Discovered you only a couple weeks ago and seen a lot of your videos already
NEVER been to Lincoln despite being to all the great cathedrals in Italy
Will go next year thanks to you
We have recently been past Calverley and moored at Apperley bridge for a few days - lovely
We live just 7 miles from Chesterfield South Carolina USA but we live in North Carolina.
Best yet. Fran do you have foraging recipes of any kind
I have a few on the website but am in the process of adding some more. Here is the one I use for my Elderberry Rob
herbalmed.blogs.lincoln.ac.uk/2010/09/20/elderberry-rob/
Just such beautiful settings ❤
They are!
New to your channel and I must say your videos are soo lovely, an absolute treat to watch! Very relaxing and so informative. I love all of the foraging. Thank you. 🥰
Thank you Georgia. It is the beginning of the foraging season so hopefully there is more to come
@@FloatingOurBoat lets hope so!
Another brilliant video! It is always surprising to see what you are seeing. The nature on the Chesterfield canal must be some of the best in the country. Thank you so much for showing it to us.
We do agree with you about the wildlife. we have seen so much this summer
The hidden gem of the English countryside lovely
I’m loving the new 4K VIDEO quality 👍
Hi guys. I really enjoy your videos. I have been showing them to my mum and sister and they too find them captivating. Fran, hope your leg is on the mend. All the best, Maria.
Thank you Maria, I am much better now
Wow! The Chesterfield canal looks amazing. We're so looking forward to travelling along it.
It really is!
We live in Retford it's beautiful around here
It is and we thought Retford was a lovely town
How beautiful the places you find. Fran I hope you leg is healing and Rich I hope you got your beer. 🙂
No beer on this occasion, but my leg is much better thank you
I hope your leg has improved oe is completely well by now, Fran. As for the Pun Oak, they are quite prolific here in Texas. In fact my address is Pin Oak Park. Leigh
Lovely tree, lovely address.
What you doing Fran & Richy? …. Where are youuuuuuuuuu xxx
We are fine Tracie, we have just taken some time to ourselves for a while but there should be another video soon.
Osberton Hall was bought in the 80s by one of two brothers called Budge. The other brother bought Wiseton Hall. They made their money in the coal mining industry with heavy plant
That's interesting , thank you
completed it!!!
Lovely video. Love when you get all crafty, Fran! Can you tell me more about that elderberry "rub" or "rob"? Is it what some might call a tincture?
It is a very old fashioned syrup with spices. Here is the recipe I use. It really does keep colds etc at bay. I swear by it.
herbalmed.blogs.lincoln.ac.uk/2010/09/17/researching-the-history-of-western-herbal-medicine/
Was lovely to meet you on here and glad to see the leg on the mend 😊
It's great to see the canal through another's eyes. We love watching your vlog.
Fran can you tell us the name of the refill delivery? We are still on the Chesterfield and I would love to get some refills before we go off again.
Thank you. She is Stephs sustainable stuff and you can find her via facebook. x
I too enjoy viewing your travels along the canals. I especially like the long and interesting walks to nearby places. Eye candy for this American. I do wish you would upload more content and do so frequently.
Thank you. Glad you enjoy the videos. They take so much time to make and upload we sometimes need more time to ourselves so sorry we can't do them more often. x
You both seem so relaxed
Thanks again for video, It's beautiful country. Hi dogs..I'm so glad for the journey. Take care and God bless.
Our pleasure!
Lovely trip. Fran, I don’t know how long it’s been since your ‘dip’, but maybe you should consider getting a medical check up just in case you have a sculling infection going on in your leg? Hope you’re improved now. 🌟💐. What fun you’ve been having. Damson jam, yum and hops, my you’ll both sleep well Joan
Thank you Joan. I think I should have got it checked out, but it is about 6 weeks ago now and although a bit lumpy, it is giving me no trouble at all. x
Hi Both great video as always, spotted your boat round the corner at Thorne services the other day, Carol and I look forward to the vlogs to come!
We were having out boat serviced so we are all in tip top condition for winter.
Your vlogs just keep getting better and better, and have such a lovely feel to them. I am always left with such a good feeling after watching them. My dad was an avid gardener and planted three pin oaks along the street in front of our house when we moved there in the early sixties. Beautiful trees. Sorry to hear your leg is still giving you trouble, Fran. Here's to continued good healing, hopefully sooner than later. Take care. 💜
Thank you so much. This is the first time I have seen these trees her, or at least noticed them. They are really beautiful and I can understand why they were brought her for large parks and gardens.
Hi Fran and Rich, that looks such a beautiful stretch of canal, very picturesque, sorry to hear you are still suffering with your leg Fran, I suppose it's just a matter of time really, I have arthritis in my knees so I know the feeling, it's nice to know the canal's wildlife is thriving, there's nothing nicer than watching nature, thanks for a lovely vlog, really enjoyed it 😎😎🖐
Lovely peaceful video guys. I hope you didn’t strain your leg on the walk Fran….you have to rest it did you say? 😊
This was filmed after a couple of weeks rest...I promise☺
Great video as always Richard and Fran, very calming and at one with nature, the way I’d imagine being on the canal- total bliss. 🍷
It’s good to see Fran mobile again, (& taking it easy). I sooo love your taste in fashion, 😃I’d need a separate boat just for my clothes lol .
Seriously, You need to do a narrowboat -foraging cookbook for 2023 🙏🏽
Aah, if only we had the time, and I am really just learning myself
Gorgeous countryside. Truly a green and pleasant land. ❤❤❤
Living in Brisbane OZ its quite green here, the winter has been a very wet one !! Enlgland green has no comparison though . As we go into summer and the dreaded humidity and not much rain the land soon turns dry and brown .Shall look back at these vlogs and drool .From Annie an ex-pat .
I used to have access to a damson tree, which was great for damson jam but also made great chutney as a substitute for plums. Added colour, but was always a right faff counting them all in to count out all the stones as they are smaller. Damson also makes excellent homemade wine. We once had a sari wrapped round our prop and it was a devil of a job to cut that off. You can still grow on your boat, we used to grow tomatoes and lettuces in troughs onions dye things yellow, you use salt to fix.🍸🥃🥂
I know what you mean about the damson stones, such a slow process but all worth it in the end
I love your foraging and the sharing of the results of that foraging. You know a lot and apparently study up on the various things you forage. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. I am just really interested in it so read everything I find
Really Enjoyed Watching Loving The Country Side Rich Hope Frans Leg Gets Sorted Soon Yous Are A Great Couple I Just Love Watching Yous Floating Along And Getting On With It. MUCH LOVE GLENN ❤️
Thank you so much
Fran I admire you and your foraging skills. If I were to forage I'd end up sick as a dog for eating the wrong berries or worse yet mushrooms. Chris of 'Chris & Shell' narrow boaters is a great forager. He just found a couple of huge eatable mushrooms on his last RUclips episode.
Take care, be well, give the pups a cuddle from us ~ Mike & Lacy 🤗🇺🇸🇬🇧🐾
We did see Chris' puffball mushrooms. Still waiting for our dinner invitation.😂
My kind of place - for sure. Thanks so much for this one. Sharon is an avid quilter and loves your crafts. She picked some grapes a few days ago and made jelly/jam with them. Thanks for your efforts.
Quilting is a wonderful art. Hope the jelly worked out well
I BET! All that Wild-Life were cursing you as you cruised through their pristine, clear water - turning it into the Thickest SMOG! imagineable 😞 ..... But! You did give them a good Write-Up - So ... I expect they forgave You 😂😂
Possibly but we did go very slowly and fed them when we stopped so I think we were forgiven
