Jeep Wrangler JL 2020 | Automatic Transmission 850RE | Transmission Fluid Change | Lifetime Fluid

- Jeep does say there is no transmission fluid change needed, at least in the maintenance manual. Zince the manufacturer ZF of this automatic transmission required a fluid change I believe every 50k or 60k miles I just want to be proactive and do something good for my car. Since there are not a lot of this kind of videos out there I hope this is helpful for you. Below you can find the Mopar parts I used as well as the transmission fluid from Mopar is linked.

Isn't it strange that Jeep tells us it's a lifetime fluid, but ZF, the transmission manufacturer recommends service every 40-60K miles. 🤔 Thanks FCA!
I don''t even know what to say about this - but yes, it is strange and bothers me a little ;-) That's why I did this video and the service myself! :-)
Did mine today at 66,000 miles. Took about 3 hours. Mopar fluid and gasket and filter.
21 Gladiator, transmission shop said to complete at 100k. Great content!
Thanks for watching! Interesting to hear from the transmission shop! thansk for sharing!
How did your 100k transmission service went I bought a used gladiator not so long ago and I almost reach 100k but wondering if is not to late to service the trany
I am still below 100k at around 78k at the moment.
Yes, I would so do it, not too late if you do not have any issues so far you should be good to do the fluid change
Thanks for your wonderful video it’s really helpful , I have Jeep Wrangler JL Rubicon 2018 just wanted to know the size of the transmission oil pan fill plug is it 8mm socket same as 2020 model
Hey! Sorry I need to double check. I will have a follow up video with upgrading the transmission pan soon.
Great video! It's been a few months since you changed the transmission fluid. How's it running so far? Are the shifts still smooth?
Great question and glad you asked! My Jeep is still running! Still shifting smooth - no issues so far :-) I'm monitoring the transmission fluid temp when driving and it is all normal it looks like :-) Knocking on wood it stays like this!!!
kudo's for a great thorough and descriptive how to ... did the fill plug not have a compression washer?
Thank you! No it is pretty much this one: www.moparpartsfast.com/oem-parts/mopar-transmission-case-plug-6513212aa
Appreciate it ... Thx @@tobisreallifeskillswithtobi
Thanks for the video, I have just bought a Rubicon 2.0 model 2020, do you know if the filter is the same?
Thanks for watching! You might be able to check this on the mopar page with your VIN/specific car type: store.mopar.com/oem-parts/mopar-transmission-oil-filter-68417054ab
Look into TPE trans pan upgrade.😊
I almost did ;-)
Nice video! Is the drain hole and fill hole the same hole?
Thank you! Yes it is!
@@tobisreallifeskillswithtobi thank you so much best video so far to transmission fluid for JL
In the UK, for 9 liters of the Mopar gearbox fluid it costs a whopping £252 + VAT (£28+VAT per litre). Wondering which oil Mopar uses and if it can be sourced more reasonably ?
Thanks for watching! That's a steep price. I think I looked into this as well but since the car is so new I figured to go with OEM :/ I found this, which seems to fit Jeep JLs: www.northridge4x4.com/part/gear-oil/30704-red-line-d6-automatic-transmission-fluid-1qt
Here is the video where they use it for their new transmission pan: ruclips.net/video/kaZO4ZQjHo0/видео.html&ab_channel=Northridge4x4
I hope this helps!
Just to confirm, to get the correct fluid level you first fill to overflow, cycle the transmission through R, D1 & D2 twice then leave running in P and fill to overflow a 2nd time?
Correct
I thought they take 9.5 quarts? Hmmm maybe that’s only if you do the whole transmission flush.
Yes, since this is not a flush it doesn't take as much.
What was the mileage when you did the change? I am at 72k and interested in doing the transmission fluid change also. Thanks!
It was around 50k
I recently did the trans fluid amd filter on a 2011 BWM X5 ZF8speed. This looks to be the same or similar variation transmission. Where did you get your instructions from? ZF recommends filling then running through the gears and getting to temp (specific temperature range escapes me now) which I used a scan tool to confirm amd made sure it was filled at that temp. Are you able to confirm if this is different for the transmission in the Jeep JL/JT?
As much as I know this ZF transmission is similar if not the same. Bit sure about age, model etc. but heard it is similar since it seems to be the same manufacturer.
Just to be clear, this was a transmission fluid change not a flush-is that correct?
Yes, correct
Do you need it to be warm when you drain the fluid? I guess so just like oil change?
No
Got quoted $163 for dealer trans filter gasket kit, does that sound right for what you paid? Seem overly inflated. Even the fluid was quoted $36.28 per quart. Don’t buy retail at dealer.
Just for curiosity, asked for trans service at dealer and got quoted $750- $800. Not even a final number, just range from service advisor. Power steering fluid was $47.85. Everything is just getting out of hand. Affordability wise.
Correct. From dealer especially. Just go to auto zone and get the European power steering fluid.
I paid ~70 for gasket and ~60 for filter to give you a reference. That's a steep price!
Sounds correct pricing
Excelkent
Where did you get that instruction sheet from? (FCA Instruction sheet K6856018)
It was included in the gasket package I believe.
@@tobisreallifeskillswithtobi thank you!
Did you say hand tight on the filter nuts and then an additional half of a turn?
No, hand tight and loosen half turn.
@@tobisreallifeskillswithtobi I just had another say, from the ZF pdf manual he supposedly has, that it’s hand tight then BACK off 1/2 turn so the o ring seal that goes into the pump can self align horizontally without binding.
I'm sorry! I just watched it again and said loosen half turn. Thanks for double checking! You are correct.
I have a Jeep Wrangler JLU 2019 I did the same process you did but the dealer said that I need a 9 quartz but it’s already full when it came to 5 - 6 quartz I tried to refill it more but it won’t let me refill the rest of my transmission fluid. It will just overflow. I did the cycle also but still
The additional quarts are in the torque converter which can only be emptied or flued changed with an entire transmission flush. According to the dealer there is no need to change the Trans fluid. Not sure if a dealer will do a transmission flush at all?? I hope this clarifies the remaining quarts ;-)
@@tobisreallifeskillswithtobithank you
1 more questions did you start your Jeep without the fluid or with the fluid already on the Trans Temp 86 - 122?
@@wyndelpuente6899 I added as much fluid possible then started the engine and let the transmission temp get warmer until it reached the minimum temperature.
I'm recording a similar video this weekend for a transmission pan upgrade but including the steps afterwards and I try to make them more obvious and easier to follow... I hope this will work ;-)
How many miles was on your vehicle when you changed it?
~60k Miles
What tool was used to remove transmission drain/ fill plug?
Thank you, Brandon😇
Hey Brandon, it was a Hex Key Allen, I forgot which size - I thought I added it. Sorry I did not apparently. You can see it in 16:11 of the video. That shows the fill plug. With the OEM pan there is no drain plug. Aftermarket transmission oil pan does come with a drain plug as well like the PPE Heavy-Duty Cast Aluminum Transmission Oil Pan.
@@tobisreallifeskillswithtobi Thank you for content, and reply😇 8mm hex allen bit for jeep jl automatic 8 speed transmission fill plug.
How long did that take?
Can be done in 2-4 hours depending on your level of experience ;-)
