A Protestant Visits a Catholic Church in the Round (and Stumbles Upon a Catholic Funeral)

- I figured we'd need to put things off when I showed up at Little Flower Catholic Church and discovered they were setting up for a funeral, but Fr. Herzog (the priest there) insisted this was part of the life of the church and that we should see it. This is a unique and beautiful church and I'm grateful for the chance to get a glimpse at how Catholicism works at the end of life.

Shortly after i watched you're first video visiting a Catholic Church, i enrolled in rcia. A year later I was baptized and confirmed. You sent me on one heck of a journey my guy.
Amen. You are part of the true apostolic church.
Welcome home
Congrats
We rejoice!! 🙏🏼❤️
Welcome home!
I'm getting confirmed a Catholic on Pentecost Sunday, Lord willing. What a gorgeous church! I've visited theatres in the round when I was in England enjoying Shakespeare...this building plan really makes so much sense for people to be able to see what's going on at the altar during mass.
Welcome home.
I entered the church 2 years ago this Pentecost
That's awesome, will pray for you in the next chapter of your life :)
What about what st mark preached he preached coptic orthodox if we follow his gospel and his work for christ why don't we follow St mark ?
@@elijahhinderry7116 The Coptic Orthodox Christians are lovely brothers and sisters in Christ. We should love one another. However, I'm not sure what this has to do with a Church designed in the round.

As a Catholic I want to thank you for giving our Theology a fair shake even if you don’t agree with it all. If you ever make your way down to the south, Greenville South Carolina has a flourishing and vibrant Traditional Catholic revival occurring and I know you would quite enjoy the incredible things Christ is doing in our community.
Not a catholic but also a Greenville resident and glad to hear my catholic brothers are doing well.
@@joshuabradford65 great to run into my fellow Greenville-ians! If you ever get the chance to swing by Prince of Peace in Taylors I highly recommend attending the Noon Latin Mass at least once for the experience.
@@calebsmith5102 maybe I will! Taylor’s is my stomping grounds!
I just moved to Pendleton myself and my son is going to St. Joseph’s. Downtown had a great Catholic Church.
I grew up Baptist, I'm nearly done with RCIA and will be having my first Holy Communion this May. I chose St. Therese as my Confirmation saint (or rather she picked me). This channel was a huge factor in me coming back to faith, and I'm truly thankful for all that Matt has done and is continuing to do.
Welcome home!❤️🙏✝️
What a wonderful Saint you choose.
She's one of His favorites.
@ThroinFrostaxe Why did you decide to become Catholic rather than remain a Baptist?
Welcome home. Wishes from India
Glory to Jesus Christ!
BEST LINE EVER!! Fr. Herzog after he puts the Holy Water on you, "I hope it doesn't burn.......BWAHAHAHA". I almost spit out my drink. The sign of a good pastor is one who knows how to make a good joke and doesn't take things too seriously. Thanks for all you do to show us unique churches and expose us to different church cultures!!
Ecclesiastical Dad joke.
What a hilarious line! LOL!
There is so much misinformation out there about Catholics and what they believe. It really makes me sad when people treat them as something other than Christians. It’s amazing how much you can find in common by simply having a respectful conversation. Thanks for the video Matt.
Very nice!!!
As a Catholic convert, I just want to say I love your channel

Happy Easter, y'all. FYI Many of the early Masses were celebrated over the remains of deceased (often martyred) faithful. The funeral Mass is very appropriate!
Intriguing
Fr. Brown in every comment section. 😋
Hey your the mexican Fr.!!
Nice
He is risen!
Hello Father. Are they not still to a certain extent with relics being placed in the altar?
Beautiful! As a Catholic I continually need to behold my faith with “fresh eyes” almost as an “outsider” because God is ever new.
@Dale Zegarelli uh-huh
@@dalezegarelli5553 🙄
I can see why a Catholic would say that. They do not obey or follow the Bible that repeatedly compairs G-d's unchanging nature as to a rock
@@dalezegarelli5553 You don't know s*it about catholic faith. Better you shut up.
Matt, I invite you to do some light reading about the Little Flower. She profoundly impacted me personally and the Church overall. To the point that, because of her unique insights about the love for Christ in action, she is considered a "Doctor of the Church". I would love to hear your thoughts about her sometime. God bless your continued journey.
Father is a gentle, guide. He just wants the best for us.
A catholic funeral started me on my journey to Catholicism. Thanks for sharing this
If you ever get a chance to attend a Traditional Mass funeral, you'll be blown away by the magnificence of the liturgy and prayers.
I invited Matt to Kansas to the largest traditional Latin Parish in the United States. I never heard from him. He would see something unbelievable, something he will not see at a novus ordo mass

Therese of Lisieux (aka Therese of the Child Jesus or "The Little Flower") is also a "Doctor of the Church" so she is a big deal in the Catholic Church, and has been a hero of mine ever since my sons went to visit Lisieux in France as part of their World Youth Day pilgrimage in 2005. I had never heard of her before then, but ever since then she, and her amazing family, continue to inspire me. They are truly inspirational models of Christianity - Google them. Loving the channel - looking forward to the next one. Happy Easter †
My goodness, you're in a Catholic church more than some Catholics. 😬 I love your appreciation for our churches. ❤️
Most Catholics I know are Catholic in Name Only as my mom says. We're Protestant but she came from a Catholic family. She said she learned more about Catholicism from my dad studying at Bible College than she ever did at home. And I find that true with a lot of Catholics here who say they don't know much about their faith. Which is too bad. Everyone should know the specifics of their denomination. We may worship in different ways; but, we all love the same God.
@@mish375 You tube Catholics like Trent Horn and Father Mike seem to be changing that. I am meeting educated convinced Catholics alot more these days.
@@MrPeach1 Bishop Barron is another one. Just commenting on how education is important in any denomination. My mom said when she learned what Catholicism was about she decided to become Protestant because she disagreed theologically with it. But she still says that she wished she had the education growing up so that she could make that choice earlier.
@@mish375 Well to be fair to your mother she only learned about Catholicism through your Dad who isn't even Catholic...which is like saying, once I heard about my family from my family's enemies I decided to disown them. If you think Catholics don't know their own faith, which is true, you should see how badly Protestants mischaracterize it. Never met a single Protestant who understands Catholicism.
@@mish375 Its heartbreaking to hear about you knowing only those types of Catholics. 💔
As a Catholic, I’d like to thank you for being very respectful of the Catholic Church’s traditions. God bless you always.
Thank you all for the wonderful comments about our unique Church. It was named after St. Therese of Lisieux the year she was canonized, probably making it the first Parish named in her honor. The parish was formed in 1926. The Church was not completed until 1947.
I LOVE BEING CATHOLIC..THE CHURCH FOUNDED BY OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST SINCE 33AD .❤
one of my friends had left the church and he and his wife came back after attending a funeral for his wife's brother. I guess we get funerals right.
My wife converted to Catholicism after attending my Dad's funeral mass in 2020. It happens! Faith on fire!
I've noticed the same with several relatives, friends of our family & parishioners who left to search elsewhere (other churches). I even recall a parishioner saying at a prayer meeting that her late grandmother, a cradle Catholic turned passionate Pentecostal, suddenly felt called to return "home" in the years before she passed, and made arrangements to have a Catholic funeral.
Your first catholic video was so inspiring.... That i joined RCIA and brought my girlfriend too even tho she still has big questions!!
Thanks for being so kind and so sweet to sharing it.
I love worshiping God at Catholic Church because we can have silence and for me it’s so important for development my communication with my Lord Jesus.
I am a Catholic from Boston.. kind of known for our wakes. Thank you for another beautiful video! I hope you one day can make it to the New England area!
I love your videos about the Catholic Church! As a lifelong Catholic, it's so great to see Protestants who are curious and so respectful about the Faith. Catholic parishes have a great program called RCIA, which has classes that teach people more about the Catholic faith, and are open to everyone. Maybe you'd enjoy checking it out. And you might enjoy reading some of the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas. Keep up the great videos, and God bless you!
This makes a good, helpful introduction to Catholic churches and practices for outsiders. Even for non-Catholics, reading the writings of Therese, the Little Flower, would prove interesting and instructive. I'm Protestant, but I can respect what saints like Therese have contributed to Christianity. If I remember, one of the large churches at Lourdes has been built in this round style, and the church of Our Lady of Knock in Ireland is similar. I've seen others on TV, as well.
Hey Matt, been enjoying your channel for several months now. I am a catholic and I very much appreciate your curiosity as well as the respect you show to all of the churches, protestant and catholic when you go to a church or speak with a minister. I think you have mentioned a few times that there has been some backlash but I for one just wanted you to know that I am learning more and greatly appreciate your shows. Keep it up! God bless and happy Easter a few days late.
Your videos showcasing a "behind the scenes" of Catholic life and teaching helped me in my research phase (4 years) of understanding the Catholic Church. As of last Saturday night, I celebrated full communion at the Easter Vigil after 6 months of RCIA! Please keep making these type of videos! I bet you Dr. Scott Hahn (very famous Presbyterian convert) would join your channel for an episode. Signed, a Baptist raised & saved to Non-denom to Catholic Church follower of Christ. Amen.
I'm Angelican/Episopcal and I used to be Seventh Day Adventist long time ago I like how the Catholic have very wonderful culture sir. 🙏🎹🎼
The way you sensitively approach difficult topics with people who see things and do church differently is inspiring and I'm grateful for the example of respectful disagreement and curiosity.
Protestants looking at Catholic things gotta be my favorite genre.
It is becoming that, isn't it. A genre that is.
@@MattWhitmanTMBH some do this "genre" better than others, and Matt you're the best at it.

I appreciate your visits to all of the denominations. I have learned so much from your videos
Have to love a Man who is strong in his faith and open minded enough to realize we are all Brothers and Sisters in the same GOD. Good on you Matt and thanks for your time and efforts with all your videos - very well done, refreshing, and enlightening channel 💫
That is such a beautiful church with a wonderful Priest. As a Catholic who returned to her faith 3 years ago I ask you to try and attend a Traditional Latin Mass to see the full richness of the faith. The reverence and love for Our Lord Saviour Jesus Christ is mid blowing. I will keep you in my prayers, God bless 🙏🙏🌹✝️
This is the first circle church in the Americas I have seen that does not look bland. It has a proper sanctuary and traditional look. I actually like it
THANK YOU!!!
I agree! I love that there are four chapels as well. ❤
Great video and Father was good at explaining.
Others have recommended learning more about St. Thérèse of Lisieux and I’ll echo that. Her autobiography “Story of a Soul” is great.
You were very respectful and even your question in relation to purgatory was non confrontational where it so easily could've been. I'm a convert (from protestant to catholic) so I understand your perspective completely. There is something beautiful and peaceful about catholic churches though and the incense is worth the price of admission alone
Another great video. I specially appreciate that you seem to be a bit more open about your own convictions during the dialogue, always respectful an graciously. One additional catholic observation: we consider baptism much more a grace from God and fruit of his own initiative and only secondarily a personal response to his initiative.
What a nice little visit. The church grounds and architecture were beautiful. Fr. Herzog was gentle and informative. When he asked if that if that burned was levity in a somber moment taking place in that church.
I thank you for your respectful of Catholic tradition. You have given the Catholic a chance to explain i/o going round spreading the untrue about Catholic doctrines. As a Catholic, I really appreciate your approached. God bless you
You have to have a very strong faith to engage so delightfully with those whose convictions differ from your own. 🎉🎉🎉
If you explained the concept of a church like this to me, I would think it's kind of bizarre and modern. But seeing the way it's executed-- it's so beautiful and traditional. Right on
There's one in Rome which was built before Christianity and is still in use.
there are a lot of ancient round churches in Europe. In Italy you find S. Vitale in Ravenna (VI century) or S. Costanza (IV century) and S. Stefano Rotondo in Rome (V century) that were built as round churches on purpose unlike the Pantheon that originally was a pagan temple. I think there were a number of reasons: the shape of the Anastasis in Jerusalem, that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus, the perfection of the circle that reminds to God... Usually a round or octogonal shape was used in Roman funerary architecture and Christians took those shape for their martyria. I hope I was clear enough, English isn't my mothertongue
Matt, I always love learning from these vids and listening to your podcasts too. Im always so impressed and challenged by how respectful and honouring you are. Thank you.
Thank you Matt for these video's. I see you are loving in your approach and kind in your remarks. What a blessed journey you're on. May God Bless you and your family. "Ave Maria". Steven. U.K.
Matt, your knowledge and understanding of catholic faith has increased dramatically in you ecumenical search. Praise be to God.
Love the show Matt. Brotherhood and understanding. As a Catholic I am notably impressed and hope that you are brought closer to God by learning about faith.
Thanks for the great video. I’ve watched you for years and this is my neighborhood parish, but I learned a thing or two, too. There is a large project going on to reduce and consolidate the many parishes in St. Louis. I pray our neighborhood will be able to worship here for another 100 years.
Welcome to the Catholic Church! I’m so glad that you were called to the visit. Your questions were very thought and you were very respectful of the traditions of our church. We Catholics pray for the reunion of all Christians through Christ’s Holy Catholic Church. I converted 19 years ago from Protestantism and surrendered in 2020, meaning I am really trying hard to fight my own concupiscente nature.😮
Good stuff Matt, love understanding these traditions that I'm not familiar with.
That holy water bit was so good. I am a Christian and their comedy and joy about interest in each other's faith is so contagious. Thank God for joy and laughter!
Thank you for being so gracious.
If you’re curious, the Eastern Churches also pray for the departed, who they believe are in/passing through an intermediate state of existence.
That organ sounds absolutely beautiful. So glad we got to hear it at the end of the walkthrough!!

I just want to say that you're channel was my first relook back into Christianity. I wasn't raised Christian but was baptized catholic. I even got my communion but stopped after that and was dragged into the Jehova's Witness. I swear they are the instrument of the devil, I have never felt more further from god than when I was around them. I didn't get baptized but my father did so my goal is to help drag my father back into the light of the lord. He disagrees with their doctrines and is just on the cusp of leaving and I think the lord placed me at this time and place. If (by the power of the holy spirit) I can drag him out of that organization it will be my testimony. Also I am still deciding my denomination and would love to here all your recommendations. God bless you all! ✝☦❤
Come home to the one, holy, apostolic Church ❤️✝️🙏
Btw..once you were baptized, that’s it. No redo. So happy ur out of the JW..it’s a horrible thing.
Seems like your already basically in the Catholic church. I recommend go to confession, then start receiving holy communion again, and then ask about receiving the sacrament of confirmation. Thats just my opinion though.
You are already baptized there is only one baptism. You just need to know the faith. Follow along the Cathechism is a year podcast by Fr. Mike here in youtube…🙏🏻

I love your channel. I m catholic and i get to know these beautiful churches though your channel. His bless you!!
My "Confirmation Name" is Therese' from St. Therese' "The Little Flower". She is such a WONDERFUL SAINT, AND EXAMPLE TO ALL!!!! And yes, it's a LOVELY CHURCH "BEFITTING" of St. Therese'.
I think a good perspective on praying for the dead is that though we experience life "in time," sequentially, that does not bind God to judge the soul of the person sequentially since God is out of time, omnipresent, so just because "in time" we are praying on behalf of that person after their death "in time," that does not mean God is somehow forced to go "well, sorry, that prayer got to me too late." Because we exist in time we do something does matter, however, that does not mean that God can't choose to act outside of the rules of existence imposed on us, otherwise we would be force to deny the possibility of miracles.
Very interesting, thank you.
Beautiful!!! ❤
Beautiful church. I think because of the lighting but it looks like it’s under water and I love it ❤
I am really blessed by your humility and goodwill, Matt. Jesus is truly in your heart. You are a great example for us all.
A wake is typically a less formal event than a funeral. There isn't really a ceremony where everyone sits down together. The family will typically be seated or standing by the casket as people come through to give their condolences. It's very open, too. They are usually a few hours long, and people come through at different times. Some people will come through for 5 minutes to give condolences. Others will stay the whole time.
I've never been to a wake inside of a church, though. Not sure if they are much different there.
At some point there is a short prayer service called the Vigil consisting of Scripture readings and prayers for the deceased and mourners or in some places, the rosary.
As a Catholic, this was a awesome video. Liked to see you do more of these.
Baldocchino (canopy over the altar) also alludes to the wedding theology in the Scriptures, esp. the Wedding Feast of the Lamb in Revelation. The altar is where Christ lays down his life for his Bride, the Church. The altar becomes the marriage bed.
Nice job, Matt! A tour of a Latin Mass would be awesome.
@12:54 Purgatory is the final sanctification of the faithful. It is only for the saved, the elect who are in need of having their sanctification completed.
Good job, keep it up.
You’re awesome!!
Hey Matt, thank you for your openness to discussing Catholicism. Regarding the prayers for the dead, another aspect to Catholic theology on this subject is that God wants us to pray for each other and also God will apply every prayer said for a person at the time of their judgment. As a former Protestant, I get how this doctrine might be confusing - but we must understand that God exists completely out of the human constraints of space and time and knows every prayer that will be said for a person, regardless of if their body has died on Earth. So if you were to pray for your deceased great-great-great-great grandmother, God would hear that prayer as He is not constrained by human time and knows every prayer that is said for a person regardless of if they died already on Earth. God knows all things and time/space/are all subject to his existence as they only exist because of Him. I hope that this helps.
Also, as a suggestion I see you are spending time in St Louis. I strongly suggest a visit to St Francis De Sales Church in St Louis. It is astounding beautiful Church and worth a video. It will also shine a light on Traditional Catholicism and the priests of the Institute of Christ the King, which are great. I hope you get the chance to do that. I will pray for you, Matt. God Bless.
Great explanation of praying for the dead! On another note, I once visited a lovely, little church near the Arch. It was covered in blue tile on the inside, walls and ceiling. Would you happen to know the name of the church?
I think it's more of a difference in theological interpretation there. So us Protestants view it as only
Christ can be the intercedent for us as he sacrificed himself for us and his blood covers us. Some denominations see praying to the dead as putting them an an equal footing with God and therefore sacreligious. Just wanted to explain where the differences come from. No shade.
@@mish375 wait. One is not praying to the deceased. You pray to God for compassion for the soul of the deceased.
@@annfrost3323 I've spoken to many Catholics that say they pray to the dead instead of God, stating they believe their ancestors will intercede with God for them. My grandmother was one.
@@mish375 Having said that, praying to the Departed must never replace praying to God
When an atheist asks why believe in God, Pascal’s wager comes to mind. When a Protestant asks why believe in Purgatory, well I take the same view point. If it does not exist, ok, no problem, my prayers won’t do anything, but what if it does exist and the deceased person is in it and needs of our prayers? Now you may say, “it is not in the Bible”, again, we can reason it as we can reason God to an atheist. God bless!!
R.C. Ireland...Really injoined your video
