Same here! I was confirmed a Catholic at Pentecost this past May, after 49 years of being a Protestant and a sort of "armchair theologian". I actually discovered the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist in the Episcopal Church, back in the 1980's. However, in Catholicism I have found something else I was hungry for: Discipleship. Great video...that is why I love being Catholic. It is truly universal. The Church help to build and conserve western civilization, art, education etc. The Church meets people where they are and brings them to Christ. There are 23 different rites (liturgical) that bring the different cultures and incorporates them into the Church. When you spoke about the rich history and cultural aspects of the Irish the Celtic thread it is woven into the Church their basic elements and Christianized so to speak by transforming concepts and cultural items that were familiar to those people and bringing in Christ teaching just as Christ transforms each of us. We conform to Christ. This can be said of the eastern rite Catholics or any...you can go to any country that celebrates the Holy Sacrifice of the mass and although it is in the vernacular you can see their icons their traditions and see the same sacrifice at the altar wherever you go. Think of St Patrick he took a Shamrock something visbile and known to Irish people and used it as a device meeting them where they were to describe something abstract the concept of the Trinity. Amazing. Thank you for doing these videos and giving a fair treatment and showing appreciation for our rich heritage.
Im an ex catholic myself, and despite my falling out with the church ive always appreciated its dedicating to aesthetic beauty, which i feel is very important. great vid
Irish monasticism played an important role in the preservation of the classical world during the "dark ages". During the early 500's Brendan the navigator followed the islands of the setting sun and created Celtic monastic communities in the most remote places. The Faeroe islands were one such place as it means in Irish " the red men". He travelled to Iceland and likely to the New World. St Columba also called Colmcille, " the dove of the church" set up a monastery between Ireland and Scotland on Iona which precipitated the Christianization of the Picts which in time was instrumental in the unification of the Gaels and Picts which in time formed the country of Scotland. The Irish went eastward as well ,as the monastery of St Gallen in Switzerland is named after an Irish monk
Matt, thank you for such a heartfelt reflection. I praise God for the gifts given to you, which have become gifts to me. Since you mentioned your location, I'm wondering if you've considered visiting Sacred Heart Church - Pine Ridge Reservation? I've learned about this through the Tekakwitha Conference and the NAIITS Learning Community. It's blessed my faith very much.
when you mentioned the Irish history in the US. I came up in central Indiana, and my father's side is Irish who came to central Indiana, and I was told the story the Klan met them saying they could be Catholic or they could eat. They were Catholic behind closed doors because no one is going to tell them how to believe, and that got handed down to me 🙂 As an aside, and I may have said this in other videos, but I dig on the conversations you have with other Christians across the traditional lines. Your approach shows the beauty of the faith, and encourages me when I'm overwhelmed with the bad behavior of other Christians, and also my bad behavior. Thanks a lot, man. Keep up the good work!
It would be awesome if you went to a Swedish immigrant church and hear their story. Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Chicago. In Sweden the churches are going as far back as the 800s AD. In Scania where I live most churches are from 1000-1300 centuries. Like Europe's churches are all old. We have much woodcarvings traditionally. Blessings!

Dude have you watched the BibleProject Classroom video series? They have blown my mind! Just incredible story telling, you really have to experience them.
The way forward for the church that Jesus built it's unity. Unity and brotherhood between denominations that transcends the differences we might have in belief to focus on the universal truth that we're all brothers and sisters in Christ and it's not how we find Jesus or which set of beliefs that resonate with us most that matters, but instead the following of his highest commandment - to love one another as he loved us. And he loved us all so much that he died for us so we might live. Therefore we should not quarrel among ourselves and who is the true church, because we all are.
I'm so happy you find the Catholic church you visited is, "on brand". I've never thought of religions as brands. Maybe our slogan should be, "On brand for two thousand years". Where I grew up in Massachusetts, there were two Catholic churches, almost across the street from each other. One served the Irish and French communities. The other served the Italian community. But the mass at both churches was in Latin back then. Occasionally we would get to attend the Italian church, because my mom's best friend was in that parish, followed by an an Italian Sunday dinner. One of those churches closed and the parishes merged. My point is the Catholic people can be very deeply rooted in their local traditions, even now.

I actually prefer it over the TLM and im a young dude who recently converted from Protestantism. Gregorian chant, ad orientum, communion rails, smells/bells, all of it. If done properly it is similar to Eastern Rite liturgies.
Two points to consider, from a historically accurate perspective: Luther split from the Church because rather than working from within and trusting in Jesus, he took it upon himself to fix things. The king of England wanted to separate from the Catholic Chuch because he wanted to divorce women at leisure. Both of these things split people away from the Holy Apostolic Catholic faith, and created splinter groups that now number in the thousands but only located primarily in western Europe and north america primarily and are by leaps and bounds far away from being a global church.
Hi Matt, I am an on and off listener but still big fan of your videos and tmbh podcast. Could you make an episode about chapter Ecclesiastes in the Bible, the history and potential interpretation? I recently discovered Ecclesiastes and I am wondering why it comes right after Proverbs, which is all about wisdom.
Why shouldn't Christ's people add beauty to their worship, using all the skills and talents that God has provided? Isn't it part of giving our first fruits to the Lord? Doesn't it help to engage all our senses in worship? As long as it points people's hearts to Christ, there is nothing wrong with it. To the extent that it distracts from Christ and what he has done for us, becoming mere religiosity, then it becomes a hindrance. I appreciate the catholicity of Mr. Whitman's presentations, searching for Christ in all the denominations.

Prayers for your search for the truth. I'm a Catholic convert, and appreciate that you don't do the sort of mud-slinging, cliche throwing condemnation (usually wrong) many others do. They achieve nothing - all heat and no light. But having said that, I hope you can do a deep dive in the Eucharist - 152 Eucharistic Miracles and counting. The most recent in Poland 2015, and Mexico now under investigation. Why? Because John 6 is literal, and from that, 1 Cor 11:27 is also literal. But so what? Because then, when Jesus says "do THIS in memory of Me", that's how he commands worship. So we comply. I'm not gonna write an essay. Do search that up. Some of the miracles can still be viewed, if you want to take your podcast overseas!!
Good that you mention the Irish as outsiders. So many immigrants from so many countries were discriminated against. I heard a young person say "they told us to pull ourselves up by the boot straps but we dont' even have the boots! " (You know what? They have the boots....our ancestors did not have boots. Watch Angela's Ashes) But no reparations for me...God looks over all of us. Don't even get me started on women of the 1800's who founded religious communities. (Watch about Mother Theodore Guerin and the Sisters of Providence)
How can one be a Protestant realising that Protestantism has no real connection to the truth of the Gospel? How are Luther and his cronies actually connected to Christ’s Church? Luther was a murderer, who had no vocation! He only became a monk because his life depended on it - not being executed for his horrendous crime! Luther was a murderer who killed a man in a duel; who to save his life sought the ancient right of sanctuary - no priestly vocation there! There is only one Church; not branches. If you believe in branch theory then who is right about anything theologically? Why did the Church have the Seven Ecumenical councils? I suppose they don’t matter because they do not support your views? Did Luther know better? I wonder.
Ah yes. The truth of the gospel. Pray to the dead, for the dead. Worship relics and icons. Ask a priest for forgiveness. Have celibate clergy. Or sodomite clergy who abuse kids. Then protect those clergy. Forbid the eating of meat on Fridays. Change the Sabbath to Sunday. Have a church that would also be a sovereign state with its own army, political corps, and bank. Amass untold wealth of billions. Sell indulgences. Elevate a dead Hebrew sinner woman into queen of heaven. Speak a dead language during church services. Forbid the laiety from reading the book bible.
@Matt Whitman, appreciate your videos and conciliatory tone. I get it that it's your style to emphasise what we have in common with other Christian traditions. That raises the question, how much does it grieve you when you see other traditions stray from biblical truth?
Matt, remember that the Irish were converted by none other than St Patrick. You would do well to read some of the accounts of the life of St Patrick and see what a difference he made in the life and mindset of the Celtic people. Catholicism is the form of Christianity that converted nations.
Thanks for watching and for the comment. I'm pretty familiar with Saint Patrick. No matter how great he was, I maintain it's a little odd for him to occupy the place of promenance above the altar.

@@TheMacDonald22 ,...Both mormonism and catholicism are 100% unbiblical, ungodly manmade frauds. If anyone does not understand this and why, it is because they remain completely spiritually dead and blind. No amount of Biblical truth given to them will mean nor change a thing. Those who are snared into these ungodly abominations are there because this is their destiny. They are vessels of wrath, and brute beasts made to be destroyed. "What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:" Romans 9:22 KJV "But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption;" 2 Peter 2:12 KJV "But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves." You’re a very thoughtful Christian brother. God bless you.
This man is not a Christian, nor is anyone who thinks he is.
Thank you. I love your Bible study and I love how you visit different churches. I’m church hunting now since my church closed last June.
Thank you for these Matt. Thanks for taking risks in your mission :)
Amen brother! We, like the vastness of God's creation, are unique and made for a specific purpose. We are ALL made to worship a Holy God who loves us, not despite our differences, but because of our differences. God bless you and your ministry.
You're a beautiful soul, Matt. Is the Holy Spirit calling you to be Catholic, yet? I first discovered you a few years ago in your tour of the Madeleine in Salt Lake City. You are such a special person. The light of Christ shines through you. Thank you for sharing your work with us. Come to the table of the Eucharist with us. 🙏❤️
Watching from the Philippines 🇵🇭
Thank you Matt. God bless you and your family. A Catholic Samoan living in New Zealand.
Im an ex catholic myself, and despite my falling out with the church ive always appreciated its dedicating to aesthetic beauty, which i feel is very important. great

Aesthetic beauty and the catholic church has nothing whatsoever to do with Christianity, and in fact is the very opposite of Christianity.
@@VoxClamantisinDeserto-zw2mt I smell a follower of "total depravity".
One of the biggest reasons that the Irish and Italian immigrants were considered outsider was because of their Catholic faith.
I have never heard that before. Where did you hear that?

Matt, I love you very much, brother. I had not seen your videos in a long while but I'm back. you are awesome. God bless you brother
I appreciate that!
We have a fairly new church in Oklahoma City and it is dedicated to Blessed Stanley Rother. I hope you get to tour it soon.
Matt, she is a mom and mom's are great and know children and their faith.
Matt, thank you for such a heartfelt reflection. I praise God for the gifts given to you, which have become gifts to me.
Since you mentioned your location, I'm wondering if you've considered visiting Sacred Heart Church - Pine Ridge Reservation? You'd be able to get the perspective of indigenous peoples who have embraced the Catholic faith and how they express their faith.
They were Catholic behind closed doors because no one is going to tell them how to believe, and that got handed down to me 🙂
As an aside, and I may have said this in other videos, but I dig on the conversations you have with other Christians across the traditional lines.
Blessings!
Hi Matt, haven't been on your channel for a couple of months and I loved this one with your son, just beautiful. Listen, I have been for a year now living in France, and I'll tell you, visiting the Churches here, from Romanesque to Gothic, is something just breathtaking. If you have a chance, this would be a great series for you to do. And of course, a chance for me to meet you, which would be awesome. Cheers, and a very blessed 2024.
Please visit St. John Cantius Church too .
It's not that far from there

Stunning. Like all your videos.
You’re a good man seeking after Christ. Keep learning, keep seeking, and most importantly, keep trusting in Him.
Thank you, brother, thank you.
Having led the effort to revive a church building of 1889, the balance between restoring and making the building work for the needs now to the living community. It is most artful.
This was the same day as the Byzantine Catholic Church? You published that one over a year ago.
How many of these churches have you got in your backlog already filmed but unpublished?
As a young father with young toddlers trying to raise them and teach them about God is becoming a struggle. My wife and I left the Mormon church that we were both raised in so we don't really have a framework how to move forward. Any tips or suggestions?
Hi! It was strong hearted of you to move through such a difficult journey. Stephen Johnson just did a 2 part interview on the pints with aquinas youtube channel you may find helpful. He also left the Mormon faith with his wife and kids. I think you may find reprieve in someone having a similar experience. It was a great dialogue and I’m still not even finished with it yet. Prayers for you and your family!

Have you been to the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona? That is some amazing artwork and architecture by a very devout Catholic.
Dude have you watched the BibleProject Classroom video series? They have blown my mind! Just incredible story telling, you really have to experience them.
Thank you Matt. Loved the video of you visiting St Patrick’s. The lady was lovely and you have a fine son. God bless from Scotland🙏🦕
May God continue to bless Matt.
This is the best video you have done. Thank you!
As always Matt, great videos.
Love the vids. Keep it up!
BTW, Matt, are you familiar with the Christian Prog-Rock Band "Iona," and their concept album "The Book of Kells?" If you haven't listened to it, _while_ reading the lyrics, well...I highly recommend it, for anyone, but for you especially (given what you've said in this video).
Love Iona have that album of the book of kells played it's so much I wore it out. I recently found they released it and I bought a new copy . love Joanna and of course the rest of the band. 🤟🔥

Catholicism has nothing whatsoever to do with the Christianity of the Bible. It is a 100% fake manmade fraud. The religion of the accursed of God. Repent!
Praying for your conversion, Matthew.
Matt, again you are a model for Christians.
Have you visited an Ethiopian church yet?
Please go to a reverent Novus Ordo or a Traditional Latin Mass. PLEASE lol.
‘Reverent Novus Ordo’ is an oxymoron
@@charliej600no it isn't
@chrisjames6600 No its not. Our parish does it and it's absolutely gorgeous. I love the TLM, we'll do the TLM and I have multiple TLM's within 30 mins of me and what we do is right there with it... I actually prefer it over the TLM and im a young dude who recently converted from Protestantism. Gregorian chant, ad orientum, communion rails, smells/bells, all of it. If done properly it is similar to Eastern Rite liturgies.
In the same way that Catholic Christian is an oxymoron.

Hey Matt. Can we meet your wife and do a discussion about her? Sometimes it's nice to know the family and their own spiritual journey.
Like what you did to your cover photo 👍 🌟 💯
“Stuff means stuff” -Matt Whitman
You should see how much more beautiful the Sanctuary was before the wreck-ovation
Matttttt you and your son should visit Redeemed Zoomer’s church in Minecraft! 😅 maybe you two could talk while your son roams the church!

+1 for the "Boy. Egg." shirt! ;-)
So many immigrants from so many countries were
discriminated against. I heard a young person say "they told us to pull ourselves up by the boot straps but we dont' even have the boots! " (You know what? They have the boots....our ancestors did not have boots. Watch Angela's Ashes)
But no reparations for me...God looks over all of us. Don't even get me started on women of the 1800's who
founded religious communities.
I did but we're on the resrication here
@Matt Whitman, appreciate your videos and conciliatory tone. I get it that it's your style to emphasise what we have in common with other Christian traditions. That raises the question, how much does it grieve you when you see other traditions stray from biblical truth?
I went to an Italian Catholic school.
All four grandparents were immigrants
I love the Catholic Church willingness to Christianize every culture.
I believe you will convert to the one true church… The Catholic Church
There is likely no better example other than the mormons of a church that is NOT the church of the Bible/Jesus than the 100% ungodly abomination of catholicism. You are totally blind, lost, and deceived. Same as the mormons.
@@VoxClamantisinDeserto-zw2mt Elaborate, if you're so smart 😂😂
@@TheMacDonald22 ,...Both mormonism and catholicism are 100% unbiblical, ungodly manmade frauds. If anyone does not understand this and why, it is because they remain completely spiritually dead and blind. No amount of Biblical truth given to them will mean nor change a thing.
Those who are snared into these ungodly abominations are there because this is their destiny. They are vessels of wrath, and brute beasts made to be destroyed.
"What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:" Romans 9:22 KJV
"But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption;" 2 Peter 2:12 KJV
"But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves." Jude 1:10 KJV

I hope she did not mean that going forward they have to accommodate the secular world and water down the Gospels. As someone previously commented that this was a so called progressive parish.

Why always trinitarian churches??? You need to be more inclusive
why would he visit non-Christian places of worship?
Lol, "inclusivity". That's ridiculous. Non-Trinitarian "churches" aren't churches. They do not believe the Truth of Scripture, or what the Apostles taught. They are more akin to Muslims than true Christians. To be a Christian means you must believe Christ is God. End of story.
