    I don't usually look at my Bach scores because I'm a slow reader (alas, I started playing at age 20, and I'm 72 now) and it takes a fair amount of time for me to learn one of his pieces. I just stumbled across this piece today when I grabbed an old book of inventions off the shelf and opened it from the back. And there was Sinfonia 15, so I tried it and found it staggeringly beautiful. It will take me a year to get anywhere presentable with it. But I just want to send along my best wishes and thanks for this video. Your love and feeling for the music comes through loud and clear, and is a welcome respite from the misery the world is going through right now.

      Hello Boston Lover, thank you so much for your wonderful comment. This is a staggeringly beautiful piece, and I really appreciate your heartfelt words about the "love and feeling for the music coming through." More than ever, we can turn to the music of Bach to lift our spirits in this very troubling time. I wish you much joy with your practicing, and your communing with the divine voice of Bach.

    Dont agree with some comments below. Music is not a visual art, like a painting in a museum, never to be touched or altered. Its a living, breathing thing that needs interpretation. Personally I like the more expressive style Sally plays here. Its interesting that the harpsichord went extinct around 1790 as soon as the piano was invented. Its notable also that no single composer ever went back to that wretched instrument afterwards. The piano opened up so many new possibilities. Imo its wrong to say that Bach never wanted this new expression... we can only say that he was born just a bit too early to explore it.

    • @SallyChristianMusic
      @SallyChristianMusic  4 года назад +1

      Hello J Barry, thank you for your inspiring and supportive words. I appreciate your articulate commentary in favor of a more expressive and unconventional interpretation. I agree, it's highly likely that Bach would have happily explored the wide dynamic and expressive range of the piano had he lived another 40 years! Thank you for your thought provoking ideas. All best wishes to you.

      Sally is an artist. You are a critic. It was understood in Baroque music that the player is the interpreter/artist. If Bachs has a modern piano he would have used it fully, just as Sally does. Turn your frown upside down.

    You play beautifully. But why are you playing it like it's Chopin? These pieces were written for harpsichord which had no dynamic range no matter how hard or softly you pressed the keys. There was no crescendo or decrescendo in the original scoring so I don't understand why modern pianists add something that wasn't written in by Bach. All that said, good vid.

      You mean Bach right

    • @juanferestrada
      @juanferestrada 4 года назад

      Commenting about what you say on dynamics: Bach’s keyboard music was not all written for harpsichord. There was another instrument in which Bach composed and played (even more so than the harpsichord) and that was the Clavichord. It has sensitivity to touch and you can make all the dynamic nuances you want. Playing a piece with zero crescendos, diminuendos and phrasing is playing unmusically. Also if you think that an absence of markings in the score means that you just play the notes flat, that’s very incorrect. There are amazing old books about the performance practices of those times, or you can even read what the sons of Bach themselves left written on performance.

    Hmm.. interesting theories on 9/16 time. You should be careful espousing theories when teaching that are not based on evidence or musicological research, especially now there has been so much light shed on baroque performance practice. Bach didn't write it in 3/4 because it would've been inappropriate for the tempo he wanted for the piece. According to Kirnberger (a student of Bach's) time signatures with a 16 denominator are presto not, as you suggest, "not too fast". Also these strange, fringe theories about spirituality and time signatures (9 being 3x3) are not based on anything more than (at best) speculation. Bach's time signatures had specific musical meanings. In regards to the choice of key, b minor is not really considered a dark key in the baroque period. According to Mattheson, it is "seldom used because it is bizarre and moody". These baroque perceptions on characteristics of keys were formed because keys had not been homogenised by modern equal temperament and some keys were less harmonically stable than others thereby giving a greater variety of colours across different keys than what we perceive today. We do not hear these characteristics on modern instruments but the composers choice of key can give us an insight into the mood they were striving to create.

      I think we should start doing things a lil bit different. Always the same interpretations cause of the "Baroque era", it gets kind of boring. Her interpretations is different. Beautiful approach in which you learn to express something new. If these melodies can be expressed this way, why not?

    • @SallyChristianMusic
      @SallyChristianMusic  Год назад

      Hello Aline, thank you for your thoughtful comment and question about the use of pedal and rubato when playing Bach. I have taken this subject and the comments to heart and have given it a great deal of thought since I made this tutorial 9 years ago. In the years from then to now, I have continued to study the works of Bach and made many more Bach tutorial videos and chart packages. With this work, my views have changed, and today I use very little pedal and rubato when I play Bach.
      The keyboard instruments Bach had available to him were the harpsichord, clavichord, and the organ. None of these instruments had the damper pedal that our modern day piano has. For this reason, some people think that Bach should also be played with absolutely no pedal, or perhaps not played on the modern day piano at all.
      The subject of rubato is more subjective. While I prefer less rubato today than what you hear in this 2013 video, I still believe that some rubato is acceptable if done with discretion. Subtle rubato is a natural part of playing expressively and “breathing” the phrases as a singer, string, or woodwind player would do when playing Bach. Last year in 2022, I made a Version II performance & tutorial video of Sinfonia No. 15 with a more comprehensive lesson and expanded chart package, including the Color Structural Analysis which you now have! You will hear in this 2022 Version II that I use very little pedal or rubato. To compare the two versions, please click on this link: ruclips.net/video/_FbSRsfC_J4/видео.html

    too much pedal there is only a few measures with pedal and its bach not chopin a little bit faster is better and keep the same speed the whole piece you are going fast slow fast slow which sounds great but keeping it the same speed sounds better. bach never wrote that the first note was longer that the second. Again, its bach not chopin chopin sounds like that bach sound more clean and simple. Bach sounds clean not a lot of pedal and mostly the same speed

      Hello Clara, thank you for your comment, which I agree with. I have changed my ideas and approach to Sinfonia No. 15 since this 2013 version. Today I would play it differently, and would use less pedal and rubato.

    Oh, your interpretation is very interesting for me! Bach is one of my favorite composers. This heavenly, divine harmony, melody and sound in the music by Bach is really unique thing!
