  • Elton John performing at Live Aid in front of 72,000 people in Wembley Stadium, London on the 13th July, 1985. The event was organised by Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for the Ethiopian famine disaster. Broadcast across the world via one of the largest satellite link-ups of all time, the concerts were seen by around 40% of the global population.

    I was there with my girlfriend at the time, fabulous day, something I'll never forget. Still have my Live Aid poster and program. Actually missed the opening Status quo song because I was queuing for the poster! Most spine tingling moment was when Queen did Radio Gaga and the whole stadium raised thier hands and clapped during the chorus, "all we hear is radio Gaga" bit

    Paul, Queen, David and Elthon on the same stage. Wow. I just need the Beatles together and alive again and I'll be the happiest person in the world. I need John, George, Freddie and David alive, I miss them like oxygen. It really hurts a lot.

      He devloped vocal nodules from his voice being over used and he sounded good like this up til the last half of 1986. He didnt smoke cigs either. Only smoked weed but cocaine was his drug of choice.

    Awesome performance. It's crazy this was the last year his voice was good before he had that problem with his voice in 86. I mean he still sounds good but I miss him doing the songs with the falsettos and the regular key

      @@JoelMatee In 1986 he started to develop nodules in his throat plus along with drugs. So it hinder him from hitting the high notes and had to get surgery and ever since then he didn't sound exactly the same as he used to and he had to dial down the vocals a half step. Go listen to Elton john 1986 in MSG and you'll see what i'm talking about

      its a dynamic microphone, so the top of the mic is where you wanna sing to at all times, since its a full stadium, they gotta sing as close as they can into the mic.

      Same with the Beatles, we haven't gotten a proper movie about their time as the actual Beatles. There's been ones about their early days playing in Hamburg, and ones after the breakup, but none when they were at their peak in 1964-1967.

    I can still remember it, like it was yesterday. As a little boy of 12 with daddy in the old Wembley Stadium. I have been to many concerts in my life, but Live Aid has its own place deep in my heart. Truly the very best concert ever given!

      In all honesty, I don't think anyone else that day got 72,000 people in wembley, countless millions in London, 100,000+ at JFK, billions around the world to clap in unison to a song, let alone at least 3 in the same set

      i watched this as a 14 year old and the most memorable part of the day was the Led Zep reunion in Philly with Phil Collins on drums. With all due respect to Queen, they're awesome...the hype has been manufactured in subsequent years, in no small part due to the success of the film. Let's not rewrite history.

    That aerial shot at the 0:25 mark is so amazing to me for some reason. It gives you an almost indescribable feeling that the whole world was tuned in. Like the world stood still this day.

      It was epic like the moon landings the world held its breathe a true feeling of being united I was just 15 in 85 the 80s were the best times and no we didn't have mobile phones and life was great

    I just realized I only knew what Elton John looked like when he was older. I never bothered to watch older performances of his so I only imagined him as post 2010 Elton John.

    Those people who put down the 80s don't know what they're talking about. It was the greatest time of all. There was so much hope and optimism for the future. Nothing seemed impossible. Live aid was the greatest show of all time!

    Best and biggest concert there will ever be. So many legends in one place. Queen, Elton, The Who, George Michael, Nik Kershaw, Bowie, Sade, Jagger, Madonna, even more to name. All have my respect till the day I die. They made the best music. Today’s music definitely devolved compared to the 60s-90s

      U2, The Who, Bowie were fantastic as well. Even some of the lesser knowns such as Spandau Ballet and Paul Young had great sets.

    At this moment in history, I had the sense that Elton was in the twilight of his career, which at that time had spanned a total of 16 years. It has been more than 34 years since Live Aid. And he's still not quite done yet... Let that sink in.

    In my eyes this is essentially the Woodstock of the 80’s, at least from a lineup perspective. I’m sure the two experiences were entirely different

      This was better than Woodstock too me. Woodstock was just a bunch of drugs and sex addict hippies with psychedelic bands to represent them. Live aid not only was about a humble cause it gathered rock fans and groups regardless of political leanings together to show true music. Queen will always beat the shit out of jefferson airplane
