I was ten years old when I watched this movie. SO MUCH has changed in my life ever since. Tears just running down my cheeks. What a MOVING and SUPERB interpretation. Why is it that only as we grow older, we can REALLY appreciate works of art like this? I shall never know...
True!!! although Angela Carrasco does it incredibly beautiful in Spanish, but Yvonne Elliman's voice is so unique. Her voice is powerful, yet it's subtle, delicate, naive and feminine that this rendition is the best.Ever.
Yvonne Elliman brings an earthy innocence to Mary. It's easily overlooked since her character doesn't get a lot of time in the spotlight, understated but powerful.
@@dshort01 It's the other Mary, Mary Magdalene. But reportedly, when Yvonne Elliman was first cast for the part (on the original record album), she was confused about it too. She wasn't familiar with the character, and wondered how "Mary" could be singing the lines in this song.
I disagree. Everyone knows the importance of Mary to Jesus. She perfectly conveys that person who plays the support role to the revolutionary who has the world on his shoulders. He needs less people who want to be seen, heard, accommodated, educated, blessed etc, etc. She's just there being the ONLY person he wouldn't think "Oh this again"

I do remember this song after almost 50 years ago. It reminds me I was in the laboratory performing experiment for my chemistry of O level while someone playing the song loudly in my next classroom.
This is truly a beautiful song. It speaks of the position of a Woman who has only ever known how to show 'Love' to a Man through sex. Now, for the first time in her life she is confronted by the fact that she is loved by a Man (Jesus) unconditionally. He does not expect anything from her.....his love is absolutely pure. She realizes that she loves him too. She has always been in control of herself and her feelings, but now, suddenly.....she is no longer in control. She is amazed by what she feels for him.....and terrified too. Wonderful song.....and what a stunning voice Miss Elliman has.
For me, what makes Yvonne Elliman's rendition better than others who followed her is because she was very young and it shows in her voice. There's an innocence in her voice. Most singers who have followed Yvonne Elliman in *Jesus Christ Superstar* have been much older and had a more "sophisticated" Broadway show tune voice.
There's a lot of very good music in "Superstar." Still, to me, this song is the centerpiece of the opera. It's not a long song, but it encapsulates a lot of the themes at work in the entire piece. Yvonne's voice is so fine here-nobody could have done it more soulfully or beautiful. They chose well when she was cast.
