  • Hello guys and welcome back to the channel. In this one we are building this 1998 tooled model aircraft. Despite the model not being the newest release, Tamiya's quality is evident and it puts many new kits to shame. I hope I did it justice.
    Enjoy!

    Very nice, but flawed. I was in Attack Squadron 52 from Dec 1963 to Jul 1966 as an Aviation Ordnanceman Third Class. I don't know how may rocket pods and bombs, including napalm, I loaded on those Spads. What I do know, however is that ordnance and fuel load never occurred. We either carried 2 drop tanks on the MK 51 racks or 1 Drop tank on the Aero 2 Ejector Rack. Never both. We did, at times, alternate LAU-19 rocket pods and 250# GP bombs, however, those 6 triangle things are USAF only. I never saw one other than in photographs during the 21 years I spent as a Naval Aviation Ordnanceman. We darn sure never had them in our squadron. The pilot's name, on the canopy rails of 300 should be "CDR Fred Fellowes, CAG". Our routine loads were 1000 lb bombs on the MK 51 and alternate 500 # and 250# on the wings, center line drop tank, or two drop tanks we'd put a 1000 or 2000 pounder on the center line. For ResCap we used the center line drop tanks and in the day time we'd have Zuni Pods (4 shot, 5" rockets) on the MK 51 racks and alternate LAU-19 and LAU-7 rocket launchers across the 12 wing stations. At night we'd lose the LAU-7s and replace them with either MK 24 or MK 45 Parachute Flares. Also when flying back to the ship from NAS Cubi Point, RP the 4 invoard gun ammo cans, with good insulation to prevent breakage, could each carry 4 imperial quarts of booze. Back in thye states hang 2 drop tanks on the MK 51s and a blivet on the center line. A blivet was an old drop tank with doors cut in the sides and totally cleaned out of all fuel residues and used as a "luggage" carrier. We'd send two birds from NAS Alameda, CA to NAS Brunswick, ME on a cross country navigation training flight. On the way back the blivets would be filled with seaweed and live lobsters.

      Hello James, thanks for the comment. It's great to hear from someone that actualy saw these planes while they were "on the job". I'll pin it to the top so anyone else building this kit may find some useful information. I guess I was just following Tamiya's directions for the loadout and I was more concerned with getting the decals to conform and with airbrushing the smokestains. I probably took some liberties with the fuel tanks. I'll have to dig for the instruction sheet to make sure. As far as the pilot's name, I guess it's CDR Billy's plane now. Don't remember any other inscription being provided on the decal sheet.
      PS: NAS Cubi Point looks like a beautiful part of the world.

    This brings back memories of my childhood days back in the 70s. I didn't have clamps, but used up a lot of scotch tape and always stole my moms finger nail files to refine the edges or parts that didn't fit that well together. She always got onto me for that.

    7:52 The Ammo One Shot primer is water based, so you can use either distilled water, or a couple of drops of inexpensive vodka to thin it out. The One Shot is very similar to the Vallejo acrylics, in that you can't use isopropyl alcohol based thinners like X-20A or Mr. Color levelling thinner because it will gum up the paint, and clog your nozzle. The vodka is ethyl alcohol which won't gum up the paint and clog your nozzle, which is why it works well. If you're looking for a foolproof primer, then Mr. Primer Surfacer 1500 can't be beat. Thin it 1:1 with Mr. Color levelling thinner or X-20A and you're off to the races. It's my go-to primer and it works well in my $35 Amazon airbrush with either a 0.3 or 0.5 nozzle at pressures as low at 12-15 psi (I pre-shade at 12 psi with a 0.3 needle).
    This was a great build and the model is one that's on my list. I've been 'off' off prop birds for awhile now and working on some 1/35 scale armour, but this is definitely the one I'm going to do when I get back into aircraft. Thanks for the video!

    • @SpruesToScale
      @SpruesToScale  Год назад +1

      Hey! Thanks for the very informative comment. I allready have Mr. Surfacer 1500 Black on order and have used the 1000 gray variant on previous builds. It's the most stress free way other than just skipping primer altogether. I've tried thinning One Shot with plain water, but it's either immediate clog or a runny mess. I will try the vodka approach just for fun. 😁 I bought it simply because at the time I couldn't find Mr. Surfacer black in the stores I usually shop at and I wanted to try black basing. Thanks again for watching and for the info.

    Awesome build! I'm working on the same kit and its my first attempt at preshading. I hit the panel lines with black and worked out from there, never thought about doing a full coat of black and then the lighter colors of white and grey. I'll have to try that on my next kit. I'll also try and dirty up the underside like yours. Keep the videos coming!

    • @SpruesToScale
      @SpruesToScale  Год назад

      I did "black basing" on this one because I used black primer. You just have to be carefull not to cover the marbling entirely with the final color. Honestly, I'm not sure it's worth the EXTRA work. You can be more "careless" with preshading and just do some highlights or postshadind on the base color. I've also seen people use the "salt weathering" technique. I mihgt give it a try in the future. Thanks for watching! ✌

It does dissolve in acrylic thinner(Tamiya x20a and Revell Aqua Color Mix). I will try to airbrush with the Revell and get back to you with the results. Probably it's just be a case of cleaning the airbrush more often or using a bigger nozzle or both. I only have 0.3 and 0.2. Thank you all for the input.

    Regarding the extensive preshade work, I’d just prime in gray then do the panel lines in a dark color (black, brown, dark gray…etc) and then post shade like you did here. Less time and I’d estimate roughly same effect.
    What caught my eye was the exhaust painting, end result looks great. And in the nitpicking department, I’d opt for a lighter panel liner on top that is t as stark. Overall, really nice build and video!

    • @SpruesToScale
      @SpruesToScale  Год назад +1

      I think preshading the panel lines is the way to go. I tend to paint too much over the marbling for some reason and the clear coat blends the colors even more, but he variation is still faintly visible. Thanks. 👍
