    Hi RUclips,
In this video I am building Tamiya's lovely Fairey Swordfish Mk.II
In the video I use a mix of Mr Hobby, Tamiya, AK Interactive, Abteilung 502, Ammo by Mig, Vallejo and Microscale Industries products. I use Tamiya and Mr Hobby paints to paint the main surfaces of the model and most of the weathering is done using my favourite Abteilung 502 oils.
Please also follow me on Instagram for my build updates:

And follow me on Facebook for updates regarding my shop in Somerset, UK.

    Thanks for watching.

My grandfather flew with B for Baker flight of 836 squadron on HMS MacAlpine doing transatlantic convoys. I have his logbooks and it contains a record of having flown this exact aircraft! 836 squadron are well known as the last to use swordfish operationally. They retrained on Barracudas by which time my grandfather had made flight commander. Its strange and lovely to see depictions of aircraft he actually flew so often made as models. The crews of the mac ships (merchant aircraft carriers) were merchant navy and thus lower paid than the fleet Air arm crews. In solidarity members of 836 would sometimes replace the 'royal navy' stencils on the rear fuselage with 'merchant navy'! Frowned upon by the navy but apparently appreciated by the merchant sailors.
    Beautiful model.

It's hard to believe that a torpedo from one of these Fairey's spelled the downfall of the Bismark. It was a torpedo launched from one of these planes that hit the Bismark's rudder causing it too run in circles. In order to launch the torpedo from the air without destroying it from the impact with the water they had to fly so low over the water that they were almost touching the wave tops. One of the crew members had to hang over the side to see how close they were to the water and give the signal to launch. All of this occurred in the North Atlantic with launches and landings on pitching carrier decks in lousy weather. Hopefully anyone who sees this model will explore the stories of the plane and the brave men who flew them.

I'm new to modelling and this is way beyond my skill level at the moment. I have some questions, though. When applying the under coat on the front of the plane you applied an off white and then black over the panel lines, why did you do this? As it appeared to get covered completely by the top coat then the effect was added after that coat had dried with the black oil (I think). It was the same for the figures, to me, the top layer covers the base layer completely, so how does this help with the shadows?

Please note, this not a complaint but an expression of my opinion, only.
Nice looking model. In my opinion far too heavily weathered. In my day on the flight line the aircraft were far better looked after than the one you depicted. The people in charge of the aircraft would have demanded the that aeroplane was cleaned long before it got to that state. Imagine if you were tasked with flying it! The first question that would raise in your head would be, "Have they looked after this thing properly?". Just before you refused to sign the 700, and thus accepting the aeroplane. I believe that many people fall into the trap modelling old aircraft as if they were old. Of course, when the aircraft were doing their jobs, they were not old, necessarily. Please do not overly weather the ordnance, the chances that that would have been brand spanking new, straight out of the packagingbefore arming the aeroplane, especially during war.
Still, I do enjoy your content especially when you depict the silly mistakes we all make from time to time.
    Cheers

You can't go wrong with Tamiya kits. Tamiya manufacturers simple but detailed, easy to build without any fuss, quality plastic, and Tamiya has the best box art, and very easy to read manual, variety 9f selections in mmy opinion, everything fits nearly perfectly and many of Chinese products ( Takom, Dragon, Trumpeter..) have way too unnecessary parts, very hard to assemble so would rather buy Tamiya over Chinese models.

Very nice build! A tip to avoid knocking over paint bottles is to wrap some kitchen foil around the bottle and then crush it into a firm collar that effectively widens the base of the bottle. The bottle will easily lift out so you can just swap bottles into the collar as you use them.

I'd probably watch Thalasohobbyer think channel is called who does modelling but mostly underwater. But I reckon recreate the time Swordfish were scrambled to sink The Bismark. Have that as a background and the plane turning away after its dropped the torpedo and is getting outta dodge, you'll be able to see the torpedo in the water and the backdrop of the German Battleship which in my opinion would make for a good model set.
But good work incredible detail on a plane that doesn't get as much attention as it should seeing as she was the backbone of the Royal Navy in WW2.

Fabulous build . I genuinely hate to criticize but I did notice one minor inaccuracy . The bracing "wires"on the wings should have zero sag. In reality they were under constant tension. They were not actually wires , but more like modern aerodynamic bicycle spokes with a flat blade like cross section with the hin section facing into the wind. Perhaps an opportunity for another photo etch set.

I tried to build this kit. It ended up being a total disaster. I have put together many excellent Tamiya kits, but this one just didn't fit right on many of the major parts right out of the box. Fill and sand, fill and sand, ad nauseam. I used the photo-etch bracing wire upgrade and spent hours trying to get the wires where they were supposed to go with the right amount of tension, etc. Following your video, I finally had everything going and started assembling the wings to the fuselage - again a bad fit (yours looked so easy to go together) with a 1/8" gap.. While I was struggling to get the wings attached using CA glue trying to mitigate the large gap, something slipped and the whole thing just exploded into a hundred pieces of broken plastic and bits of bracing wire. It was totally unsalvageable. Ninety bucks down the drain.

I just love Swordfish torpedo planes . I just can't put my finger on it, and they played in the game till the very end. Not particularly pretty but they were tough just like British sailors and Marines. None tougher.

I have always wondered how these wing suports and photoetch worked. Looks like it wasn't to bad. But experience required.
If I remember correctly tamyia sold photoetch side kits for this model and pretty much everyone that makes step up kits also made them.
It's quite the kit to build and highly on my list.
In my head if you build this rite it's a kit that says. Yes I'm a little better then i was before I started.
Then drag it around the house to my family. HE LOOK AT THIS and then look over here look under hear look in there.
And they all say yes dad 😂❤

Never quite worked out how people avoid overspray when airbrushing at that distance from the model? I get it even if I'm in really close. :(

Confused. Why would you polish a part (sanding to 4000) before paint? I'd have thought that was pretty much the opposite of convention. But I'm not a modeler, so...

Only came across this channel a couple of days ago and although I'm not really into aircraft I can certainly appreciate a good modeler.
After watching only a handful videos I've already picked up a stack of tips..
    The model?
    It looks awesome!!!
Can you tell me what the 3 pronged things are that are attached to the middle of the front outside struts, if it was mentioned I must have missed it.
It's a like and sub from me for sure

Scale Model Shed your model brings a tear to my eye! I am a huge Swordfish fan and this is just superb and realistic. I just finished the book "Stringbag" too, highly recommended.

I love the weathering your vids... inspires me to want to do that on my model cars. I love how you left the paint spill in and didnt edit that out. We have all been there... very nice work.

Very nice job. That rigging must have been a baarstaard. I have an Airfix Walrus in a state of incomplete for the last 2 years as I’m terrified of the rigging.

Very informative! I learned a lot. Thank you. I like that you put photos of the product your using inset in the video. Could you leave the photos up a little longer please. And your photography and video quality is first rate! I wonder what you do for a living if that attention to detail corresponds to your occupation. Thanks again. I’m a subscriber now!

I dont build models but would like to begin doing so at some point in the future. However, I find watching them being built very therapeutic and enjoyable. Plus, I also learn whilst watching. The Swordfish is one of my fave aircraft and looking forward to weatching this :-).

@@f-4bphantom591 Hey Phantom, I plan to build aircraft - specifically WW2 and other military aircraft. It's the painting/adding wear as well as when to do that which has me confused. Essentially the whole painting process. That's the bit that 'frightens' me most :-)

Dought you read these comments, but I really wished someone that had talent would sit their butts down and do a video on using soldering wire or regular wire and making hydraulic & brake lines for landing gear like on the B-17 landing main gear struts. There are sone real artists out there but no e of them showing their skills at maki g Eduards Brassin metal landing gear like in b17 look realistic Or shorting the gear to collapsed position they only come in extended

Andy, is there any chance you could do a video on the very basics of painting and weathering, i.e. what are the paints, which sealer should you use after which paints, which sealer to use before weathering, which thinners to use with which weathering medium e.g. oils, enamel washes etc
