The NCR-80 is my first Winkeyless TKL. I'm typically not a fan of keyboards of this size, but the price was so good that I couldn't resist.
Since it's got such a retro vibe, I decided to go with some clicky switches. When I put this keyboard together, the Kailh Box Jades were spring-pinging so bad, that I heard the ping more than I heard the click. Once I removed them and lubed the springs with some GPL 105, the ping completely went away.
The case itself is super hollow sounding, The vibration of the click bar on the PCB, screwed to the bottom of the case itself was making an echo-y sound. So I used the packing foam that it came inside of to line the bottom of the case. Luckily, it made a very large difference.

These are not nearly as sharply clicky as I was expecting, a rather pleasant thwock under a light click. Very nice.

Yes, I noticed the same! I've tried Cherry Blues and I immediately got rid of them. I like all of the Kailhbox switches.

I have box navys on my retro 8bitdo c64 style keyboard, such great sounding switches. This ncr80 looks and seems great to house clicky switches.

Ohhh so you have a video of it? I’d love to hear it. And yes love this keyboard, wish I could bring it to work 😅

@@geeklevelasiantech I brought my unicomp to my office as my daily lmao buckling springs. I had a couple of comments about the noise but no real complaints. my boss never forced me to swap it out with another one.
I dont have a video of the box navy 8bitdo but i should, just a quick one. I will do it eventually lol When i do, i will let you know.

I guess im going to like it more with its hollow sound. It gives unique character to the board just like how hollow some vintage keyboard were.
Im waiting for my ncr 80. WIll use SAL profile keycaps (Higher profile + thick "1.4-1.5mm" abs = deeper sound) and a box navy switch. And leave everything inside as is.

YES, well played. I want to buy the nj80 and box jades/arctic fox because nj80 is plastic and hollow, has good stock stabs and is cheap.

It would be positively fantastic if you could pull the foam out and do another sound test. Hollow sound isn't a bad thing with clicky switches (and I'd infer that spring ping isn't a bad thing period, it's just part the charm) and I'd like to know what it sounds like in bone stock form.

Oh yeah. That’s the stuff. Only thing I’d change is to leave the stabs unmodified and rattly, as well as removing all dampening from the hollow roomy case. Adds to the vintage aesthetic/feeling. Overall a very nice sounding keyboard.

this isn't a clicky build, it's clocky. it's actually making me like clicky switches, very impressive lol

Dude, almost all clicky switches used to be like this... until the click jacket menace showed its ugly head. There was a time before that, where buckling springs, metal leafs, plastic follower arms and all sorts of creative shit ruled the world of mech keys.

Was very surprised by these switches after reading some mediocre reviews, Big fan of these mute jades such a balanced sound

Looks like this chassis actually gives the jades a nice sound with your modifications to them. I'm curious how Zeal Clickiez would fare in this since they have a much deeper sound.
Also should say I love the way this board looks. Reminds me of a non wavy Dell At-101. Get some OG double shots from say a Laser VTCL 2269 complete with the chonky big ass enter that thing has and you got one hell of a beauty in beige.

First of all, I think it sounds really nice the way you set it up. Though I would be interested to hear it without the foam, as vintage keyboards also tend to sound more hollow in general.
Secondly I was wondering how much of a hinderance it is to not have a windows key.
    Grateful for any answer.

Hey thanks for the comment. Without the foam it wasn't thaaaat much different, but definitely noticeable to a point where I didn't prefer it. Not having a windows key is actually really annoying because I use that key quite a lot while editing my videos and photoshopping. I had to map it to something else which isn't natural for me while editing.
