One Mans Off Grid Dream Home in Costa Rica - A Short Film

- This is a short film I did for a client for him to submit to an architectural contest. This was his dream home he built in the jungle of Costa Rica built with shipping containers, bamboo, and other sustainable materials. It is ran by solar and hydro power and has incredible ocean and jungle views. This house is what you dream of living in when you where a kid. Think the lost boys in the movie Hook or Swiss Family Robinson. This was a really amazing project to work on and help create an immersive experience of what it's like to be in this space and what it means to the creator. These are the types of client projects I absolutely love and I really enjoy working with other artist's with their own set of creative ideas. This was truly a collaborative project.

Its hard to believe, looking at my place, that we live on the same planet. That was Magic!
This home gave me such feelings of pure calm and freedom. This is how we should be living.
This made me emotional to watch and it speaks home. My parents raised me in a house they dreamed up themselves, my father designed it and went to work.
He always says he lives in his sculpture.
Your house, the dream you materialized, speaks to me a lot and I thank you for sharing it with us.
I know one day I will do the same, I always felt it in my heart that I would build an unconventional house one day, in connection with Nature, as we are meant to live.

Yeah this is insane, I think you sound tired and dreary yet your soul comes through in your art/building. One does become this way after a life of service. Awesome to see you taking it all into your own hands now and creating something undeniable to anyone, unique and distinctly beautiful. These videos are nice because you enjoy the fuits of labour not seen. I'm sure this was a challenge.
He doesn't sound tired or dreary at all. He just sounds relaxed and at peace. Maybe you just don't understand the difference because you think the anxious and neurotic people of "civilization" are what humans are supposed to be like.

Really? Hum……for some, yes. In reality for some, too. I live wide open like he does, truly a delight and seasonal annoyances, but paradise for 80% of the time. Now when I am in NOLA, other things ruin my illusion of the good ol days!

Bugs can mostly be controlled by natural means (bat houses , plants than repeal, etc. & mosquito nets we see🧐 Great music, filming & Thanks for sharing your private secluded 'Hut+house' 🏝️
Awesome! I have lived near the beach in Guanacaste for 13 years. I can enjoy both the beach, and drive a short distance to the Central Valley.
Well done, I have just completed my land deal, but Im also bringing a 40 foot RV bus from a local ex-pat friend who just finished using it while finishing their own house on the same road as my land. (next door in fact), so I embark on my minature version of this as a 55 year old single man, in January, when my lease ends here in the states and I'm done with the next 6 weeks of final preparations to embark on the journey to my little home on the side of volcano Miravelles, in Bijagua de Upala. Your video was inspiring, and aspirational, to say the very least.

People never talk about the quantity of insects in places like that particularly ants..sometimes millions of army ants come through a house..literally millions.
Yes i wish they did talk about the downs. I'm so scared it's gonna be full of ants, mosquitos, tickd, spiders
@@acinamatata6342 tripocal forests are full of insects,,,lots of spiders, lots of ants,,super abandance of ants..dpending on mosquitos...which is why the natives make clearings

Yes, well in the tropical mountains people usually live on ridge tops, most trees get cleared. There more mosquito s the lower U go towards the creeks. Of course a little breeze there as well. Planting fruit trees right.. and a vista.
This can make water a problem. Water by gravity. Roof water is great but what do do if U have a week without rain?
In the Amazon flat lands they'd live right next to rivers on stilts.
This will depend of course, but insects and wind are considerations.
If u can stand spiders consider changing plans.
Snakes are not a issue.

Thanks, yea there were a lot of close proximity flying shots. I hit a tree at one point but ended up being ok.

My kids spent 6 weeks in Costa Rica years ago. I checked out the government website, and it states that squatters have 17 years to live on your property, or in your home if they move in. Wild right? that is a long long time. Then this sad fact was confirmed by a coworker (I’m in FL), who said her partner is Costa Rican and he lost his Costa Rican property to squatters bc of this law. So indeed, it’s def true.
The mosquitos 🦟 and the big cats! What do you do about jaguars? Looks too open if you leave food out arent you concerned about big cats?

Mosquitoes not an issue....
Beautiful property with an obvious eye for good functional design, but what ruins it for me is the narration, which is up there with the worst ever; the monotone scripted/read delivery of every word is horrific...and btw, having spent much time in Costa Rica, and unless you're next door to a larger city, how is the power/wifi/water/mosquito situation working out for you...??? (I just realized this is a project done for a client, so it's not at all done at a limited budget but rather a 'just go ahead and do it' budget. Very misleading)...
