That’s comparing apple to orange. They both used different materials. One used oil paint and the other one used charcoals pencils.

It has a dynamic quality that only great painters , deft with their brush strokes can achieve . You can see in the highlights of her hair that it was one stroke and that's it. No fussing or going over it. Great painters dab at the canvas and put on exactly what they want, where they want it.
The woman in the painting is so beautiful. She looks so modern, it could be a present day picture.
Maybe she would appreciate an antique painting. Most people appreciate beauty, especially natural beauty!

The only thing that has changed with humans over the last couple hundred years, is the technology around us... We humans havent evolved into another lifeform yet, so essentially we have been exactly the same for hundreds if not thousands of years... lol

Tade Styka was my mother’s Godfather and a close family friend. He painted both my Grandmother and her sister when they were teenagers. They had some good stories to tell about their experiences in his New York studio.

just looked her up and the few others pictures i could find she genuinely was a beautiful women just as she is in this portrait with the spectacular hair. her career and her parts may not have been very big but "Metropolis" is one of the most iconic films of ALL TIME.

@@bigdaddyofsi look for her? She was the lead actress. I recognized her before the film was mentioned. She must have been chosen for the role for her beauty considering what happens with the character.

Metropolis is a classic in my estimation
Knowing her grandmother was a silent film star makes me think the painter was thinking about spotlighting and lighting for camera of an actor’s face. This painting is just stunningly beautiful, and the amazing wash of light - radiating out of her gorgeous face - is amazing.
She was born in 1925. If this painting was done in here 20s that would have been done in 1945 or after. Definitely not silent films
@@Chungustav It was a little hard to understand... but the woman who's being interviewed said her own mother was born in 1925. So the silent film actress grandmother gave birth somewhere around the time the portrait was painted.
This portrait looks more like a photo than a painting. It's that good.
The portrait is captivating, hopefully the family will keep it (or loan it out to a museum or film archival).
It’s a sexy painting, it looks like she’s naked with her long hair covering her bosoms and draping over much of her body.

The way the light hits her hair to reveal the colour and texture is so beautiful, it really shows the artist's amazing talent.

I think the most awesome thing about this, is not to have a painting by a "special" painter but to have such a unique and fantastic immortalized color image of a loved one. And secondly, I'm going to study this as a way to paint hair.
Idk but as I look ( and for the first time I think I understand) his method looks easy to replicate. I see large swathes of solid followed by wispy trails which should be easy (ha ha ) to achieve. Eventually.
The woman said she might have met her grandmother when she was very small, hardly a loved one.

@@bobwallace9814 okay, the black velvet version is TACKY! the original is a classic! One of the first paintings I learned about. My grandparents had one hanging in their kitchen, I'm sure it was a print of the original.

I’m going off track here. My aunt was watching an episode where Sandwich glass candlestick holders were being appraised. Sandwich is a town on cape cod Massachusetts. That had a big glass factory. In the late 1800’s it had a fire so items made there are expensive antiques now. My aunt worked as a docent at the museum for years. On the show they priced the holders very high BUT they were reproduced holders. My aunt knew they weren’t the real ones. The appraiser should have known that. But I still like the show.

What a beautiful women and fantastic painting. My grandfather was in many silent films in about 1916-1930. I find this so interesting & beautiful because all movies and photos were in grey scale back then so seeing her in color really brings her to life. My youngest is a painter and I can tell you that must artists are not paid enough for then amount of work that goes into a painting. It's sad.
