- Sburban Jungle, composed by Michael Guy Bowman, arranged for piano duo by Do the Musicy Thing.
I wanted to do something special for 4/13, and Sburban Jungle is one of the most iconic tracks in Homestuck. But the piece has so many layers that two hands simply can't do it justice. So I made a piano duo arrangement, and recorded each part while listening a metronome (to ensure they could be synchronized), and then put the two together.

This one isn't ridiculous on that front, but I've played a piece by Adès that did basically require that.
I started tearing up because this song just automatically causes a montage of the events of Homestuck to play over and over in my head

This is amazing! I love how thoroughly you play the music, even going to the extent of playing the piano twice. I love Sburban Jungle and you definitely do the song justice in this piece.
Gabby Dunn It really had to have two pianos - this piece has a lot of layers. If you haven't heard it, there's a percussion ensemble arrangement that someone did that also works well (again, there are enough instruments to really convey the piece).
Oh, yes, I've heard it. Honestly, I think it must be difficult to try and compose something that sounds just like the original piece. You're definitely right; the song has a ton of layers.
You're really smart to do both layers at different times, then put it together to make it sound amazing!

even though im not a piano person, this is truly magnificent! i play the violin, so isnt much violin pieces in homestuck i can do except haunting refrain. ive tried to do derse dreamers, but it wasnt really working for me. you are amazing! this is a work of art!
Mena Kim Thanks! There's a substantial and excellent violin part in Even in Death (T'Morra's Belly Mix). And Judgment Day has a violin melody through a bit of it (and you could play the rest of the melody on violin if you wanted). While it's not originally for violin, the melody of Pumpkin Party in Sea Hitler's Water Apocalypse is perfect for the instrument.

Mena Kim Moonsetter has been one of my favorite Homestuck pieces for a long time, and I'd like to arrange it. So far I haven't figured out how to do it effectively on solo piano; a full piano part + two string lines are hard to fit in two hands without omitting something essential (it's not a texture that would be effective four hands). If I ever do figure out a way to do the piece justice, I'll definitely make an arrangement.

Have you considered doing a Homestuck piano medley? I have a weakness for those and I haven't really found any on RUclips. I know it's a lot of extra work but it'd be cool.
Sporkaganza That's a good thought. That may have to wait until next summer, as, if I did that, I'd want it to be fairly substantial. But I'll definitely think about that.
+Sporkaganza So I've thought more about it, and really like the idea (and have been putting some ideas together for the sequence of themes). But I think (having considered this myself, and having had a friend suggest this) that I'll wait until the comic is done (whenever that is) and then do a large medley including themes from most of the major animations in the comic, once I know what music has been used in the end. So I'm very likely to do this, but it will have to wait a while, (however long it takes Hussie to finish, and then a bit longer, as I'll have to write/learn/record the medley).

Yes, eventually. But probably not soon. The current project is Overture, and then there will be some from Vol. 10. And perhaps some non-Homestuck ones interspersed as well.

sheavsey That's because I was listening to a metronome to keep the two parts synchronized. So I just set the metronome at the original tempo.

GameFactor Black...would be difficult. I won't rule it, but those are a lot piano notes in the original even without adding in the other parts. I've wanted to play Eternity Served Cold for a long time and...I probably will eventually. Not soon, though; since I did an arrangement of Carne Vale, I'll do several others before doing another English piece. (If I attempt one of those ca. 8' pieces, the first will be A Taste for Adventure.)

say, i think i've mentioned before that i play the piano currently (and this is gonna be a bit of a long comment, im looking for advice, and im guessing that since you managed to get this good at piano you can help me), and lately i've been having trouble being motivated to play. theres a reason for this, and long story short, ive been stuck with a piano teacher that i dont really like or want to impress at all for, what, six months? a while now, nonetheless, and though my mom is working to find a new teacher for me, we can't even determine if im going to take lessons from this new person i found until a "trial" lesson im having sometime in june, and literally right after that happens, im off to europe for 5 weeks and cant really play the piano while im there.
so i need to be motivated to play between now and when i go to europe so that i can come back and still be able to play somewhat okay.
either that, or i could quit. and im not really intent on quitting despite the fact that so many people are proud of how decent i am...
tl;dr: i need to get motivated to practice the piano. how should i go about doing that?
Charmi the Eevee The primary motivators for me are having a deadline of some sort, or really liking the piece I'm working on. And that deadline may not be anything dramatic; it may just be that a rehearsal with other performers is coming up and I don't want to bring the group down. (Or it may be that I have a relatively short window in which I'm at home and able to record an arrangement, so I need to have it ready before I go back to school). Have you tried playing in chamber ensembles? I personally prefer that to playing solo.
Have you liked the pieces you've been working on? If I don't like a piece, it's hard for me to be motivated to work on it much. Since I wasn't a piano major (and was never trying to become one), I was spared a lot of standard requirements on rep, so I played a lot of obscure pieces that no one else did, but that were better pieces than much of the standard rep. (That sounds really hipstery when I write it out...) I don't know what your level is, but I highly recommend John Ireland's music if it's within your abilities. Look up his piece Month's Mind - that's at the easier end of his music. If you can play that piece, look up his other piano music (Sarnia is his best piano work, although it's substantially more difficult. But I played it a few years ago; it's not unreasonable.) While a lot of Ravel's music is difficult, he has a few easier pieces (the Menuet from the Sonatine comes to mind). On the Homestuck side, Jit has the music of the solo piano pieces from One Year Older online, and those are generally quite easy. It's unavoidable that, in 5 weeks without practicing, you're going to lose some dexterity. You can work on memorizing pieces, or abstract skills (like rhythm) in that time, if you want.

What do you do at 2:30 I read the music sheet and it says to damp with the right hand what does that mean?
What he did was bend over to the inside of the piano and pluck the strings, but I'm not sure either.
It's where you reach the right hand inside and press on the string directly with the fingers, and then play the key normally with the left hand. The right fingers dampen the string, preventing it from ringing much, so you just get a muted thud.
