+SuperMario444 - Skullgirls Enthusiast/Trash It keeps hapening. (Actually these kind of stopped hapening for a little while due to DMA applications, but it will resume hapening soon). Thanks!
Kris Malbo Keep playing - I'm competent at piano, but not remarkable. (And I'm not saying that to be self-deprecating - I'm around a lot of piano majors who are *far* better pianists than me.) You may well be able to play pieces like this in time.
+Do The Musicy Thing hey I just want to challenge you for something, I want you to play the song for CASCADE. I be really impressed if you could play that long. at the moment it's the longest one. although Andrew has confirmed that in the last update he'll make a longer scene. also he will win world record for largest story. it's currently the story of government or something, he needs around 4000 more pages. he's going to add about 16000. and to think, this all started just because he felt like having fun. I'm sure all his popularity is pretty fun though. BTW you should check out Neo-Kosmos. Andrew is going to help make it to soon.
Joshua Nichols I've thought about Cascade, and I do feel that it would require at least a couple of string instruments along with piano to do it justice, so...it's probably not going to happen, unless I meet or convert some string player Homestucks who have the time to learn it.
I won't do that one soon, because I did this one, and they'd be a bit similar. I do like Eternity Served Cold a lot, but I don't want two arrangements that are too similar to each other.
can i just say during the intro (because it was tinted green) your shirt looked like it could have been John's. Even though i now remember his shirt is long sleeved but still. but this vid makes me want to watch [S] game over to the piano music. Imma go do that.
That moment when you realize this was uploaded the day [S] GAME OVER came out I know this song is over a year and a half older than the Flash, but did you record this in advance waiting for it to be relevant, or are you just a Lord of Time?
***** It was uploaded exactly 2 months later ([S} GAME OVER was released 10/25, this video was released 12/25). I only started arranging it after watching [S] GAME OVER repeatedly.
While I was rather shocked by the rate of major character deaths, I tend to be fairly immune to characters dying. Even more so since reading Homestuck.
If you happen to be around Blair School of Music, you could see about studying with teachers there (Mr. Schneller and Ms. Dorfman specifically were my teachers). Else it'll be a bit difficult. But piano teachers seem like they're generally quite prevalent.
Wow..... This is so amazing! Your fingers are moving so fast on the piano! It's like the song is filled with emotion, the way it's played. I love it. It's beautiful.
asdf this is amazing! it's almost perfect, but the crescendo-ing was a little wacky, and sometimes it was kind of mushy between the notes played by the right hand and the ones played by the left.. but otherwise, it was awesome! c:
kinnaaan I probably should have pedaled a bit more clearly when I had both hands in the bass, which would clarify the hands. And I did add a few crescendi when I felt they worked musically (even if they weren't in the original). Thanks for your comments!
I would agree that it's one of the best. The use of the expanded screen and irregular pacing combined with the surprising plot developments are all highly effective.
This was pretty cool, but I think parts of it suffered a lot from the fact that both hands have to share a pedal. The left hand was clearly supposed to use a pedal and the right hand wasn't. Most obvious in part that starts at 1:30.
+David Brickey Yeah, that's unavoidable. Also, at that particular spot, my right hand needed the pedal to lighten the touch of those notes. Even though they'd sound better without the pedal, I couldn't have played the r.h. part quickly enough without the pedal (a better pianist could have, but the left hand still needs pedal, as you mentioned).
damn, this was like the first homestuck piano cover i listened to when i got into it a year ago. this actually inspired me to try and play some parts of carne vale, but i’m not very experienced so i can play like 2 parts of it and thats pretty much it. and holy shit was this scene grim, you did a great job of conveying that on just piano
Nathalie Thanks - I like that part as well (along with that part of the animation). The peak of that section at 2.49 was what made me really want to arrange this piece.
This needs some 80,000 more views. Seriously. I tried to self teach this song by ear but it wasn't near as complex as this. I feel like the high notes at 0:21 or so are only doubles (e flat and b flat, etc.) but that's my interpretation I suppose.
sjhsjksjs all of these songs are absolutely fantastic i cant stop listening to them also jfc you are amazing that you can turn these kinds of songs in to extremely accurate pieces and aaaaaaaaa wow its so fun to listen to
Allison Lund Thanks! I pick for pieces I think I can arrange for piano (there are some pieces that I like a lot, but don't see a way to arrange effectively), and then try to preserve the effect of them as much as possible on piano (even though that sometimes means a less literal arrangement).
I love to hear covers of my favorite songs, specially on piano because I play it too :) Keep the awesome work, dude, this totally deserves more views!!! *he, sorry for my bad english.
Excellent, wonderful and splendid work. It is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. The truth has taken me a few tears, but that does not detract from how great it is. What a wonderful way to play, just awesome. Sorry for the bad English hehe
darkomegasonic Thanks for subscribing! My channel's still relatively new (about half a year old), and subscribers take a while to accumulate; I'm bit surprised by how successful my arrangements have been so far.
Aaah your playing is so good and the arrangement is really detailed! A few places here and there sounded a bit mushy/unsteady but at this tempo that's already hella amazing. I wish I could play like you, but my parents made me quit and I don't have much time now T.T Fantastic job, can't wait for more covers! :3
Anne He Thanks! Yes, I think I overpedaled this in places (I try to be aware of it, but then I get excited/nervous when recording and the bass gets muddy). I'm sorry you were forced to stop playing! I hope you have time to learn again at some point.
epicfacedudeOVER9000 Thanks! Malcolm Brown's style seems to transition more naturally to piano than most (and that's not an insult to him or to the others; it's just a characteristic).
Do The Musicy Thing Yeah. For such an intense song, it's just surprising to hear it sound so good on the piano. And for it to have, like, a guitar or some weird rock instrument like that (sorry, as much as I love music, I know just about jack shit about it
dude, this is amazing. i envy you heavily. may i request savior of the waking world sometime in the future? id love to see your arrangement of it! good luck on your other songs too!
Ally Swatling Thanks! I'll consider it - I really like that piece too. It does look like someone on RUclips has done an arrangement of it, but mine would be substantially different, so I still might. There are a lot of pieces based primarily on the Doctor theme, and I'll probably only do one (or two at most) to avoid redundancy. I've also considered arranging Green Ghost - I don't think anyone's tried that one, and seems sort of like a culmination of that theme (although you could make a good argument for the Savior of the Dreaming Dead being the culmination). Either way, it'll be a while, but I do definitely want to arrange a Doctor-based piece at some point.
Any tips on leaning the sheet music? The rhythm's are quite complex, but I aim to at least play the beginning with confidence. The arrangement it's self, is beautiful, as well as the performance. ^u^
Sebastian Portier-Young Metronome. That's how I learn anything difficult. Start it as slow as necessary to play a passage nearly perfectly (difficult passages I often have to start at half speed, and sometimes even slower). Then turn the metronome incrementally faster, and practice the passage at that speed until you can play it nearly perfectly. And then keep speeding it up like that until it's full speed. The extensensive repetition involved tends to mean that, by the time it's nearing full speed, the passage will be memorized (or nearly so), which makes it much easier, because then the eyes are free watch the hands.
CheezyKitten IsAwesome Thanks - I'm definitely going to do more. I've been learning the next arrangement for the last couple weeks (I'm hoping - although I can't be certain until I've done the recording - to release it on 6/12). "Rex Duodecim Angelus" is on my list of pieces I'd like to arrange - I don't know that I'll get to it particularly soon, but I do hope to eventually.
DSDstudios See if this works: drive.google.com/file/d/0ByNsIo5ogzHmaGJYY2JGS2MyeGs/view?usp=sharing (I just told Sibelius 6 to export a MIDI, and I don't know a good way of testing if it's usable for you, so let me know whether it works.)
lin fire I'd hardly heard that one before your comment...it definitely has some potential. The words would have to be converted into notes to give their rhythmic accents (because I am not going to shout words myself), but it could work. I've added it to the Rather Long List of Potential Arrangements.
just wow. i am an aspiring pianist trying to teach myself from youtube tutorials. when i see something like this, i can't help to feel a little brought down... but anyways, could you maybe tell me how you learned and for how long you've been playing? just so i see where i stand and maybe could learn more efficiently?
Arden Thomas I started playing when I was 6 (my mother showed me basics, and then I learned with a computer program), and took lessons starting from when I was 9 until last year. So...about 16 years total, 12 with lessons.
Charmi the Eevee Perhaps it was a bit predictable. But I do somewhat favor pieces that have been used in comic, and [S] Game Over was remarkable. One of the next arrangements I'm working is a piece that hasn't appeared in comic (not yet, anyway), so perhaps it'll be a little less obvious. Thanks for listening and commenting!
Do The Musicy Thing That's okay that you choose ones in the comic because Hussie tends to choose some pretty good ones. But there are a lot of good ones that he hasn't used yet! You should just choose something you want to do :3
I agree on all counts. Sometimes the main restriction on what I arrange is what can translate to piano. For example, Moonsetter is one of my favorite tracks in all of Homestuck music, but it already has a full piano part...and then two string parts. Any time I've tried to think of a solo piano version, it feels like I'm just leaving holes in the existing piano part to play the others (or, alternately, omitting the others to play the piano part). Perhaps I'll figure out an effective way to arrange it someday, but I'm not going to make an arrangement unless I feel I can do it justice. The same difficulty also applies to a lot of the One Year Older album - it's one of my favorite Homestuck albums, but a lot of the pieces are either like Moonsetter in that way, or already solo piano (in which case there's no arranging to be done).
Do The Musicy Thing it does seem impossible D; just a question though, how long did it take you to get this good? ' because I might start trying the piano it seems so fun :3!
Q frythedeliveryguy Q I've been playing about 16 years (I'm 22 now), although the first few I was young, so they aren't worth that much. (Which is to say, it wouldn't take you 16 years of playing if you're working on it a comparable amount). Once you've learned some, look up some of the solo piano pieces from Homestuck, like Mother, Underfoot, and Stargaze (I know sheet music exists for all of those). Those are generally quite easy.
RLauraG4 I always work out the notes of arrangements before learning them at the piano. So I listen to a little bit of the original several times and figure out what the parts are and then how to convey them on the piano. Sometimes that's a fairly simple matter of playing a melody and chords as they come, but sometimes I'm having to integrate the rhythms of a percussion part into another part, or working out how to play a section that really need three hands with two. And then I keep doing that for the whole piece. In the case of Carne Vale, the initial arranging was done away from the piano, whereas Gold Pilot was done mostly at the piano. Once I've made the arrangement, I start learning it at the piano. I generally make several tweaks in the process of learning it as I figure out how to make something more practical, or find that something I thought was playable wasn't, (or vice versa). And then I practice it rather a lot until it's ready to record.
JOHN, IS THAT YOU BUDDY?
Hmm...I never checked out this video to notice the green color at the beginning...how appropriate!
+subversiveasset Thanks - I can't do much in the way of video editing, but I try to do little touches when I can.
I honestly like this better than the original, but then again I'm a sucker for piano.
Pun unintended.
+Amy Wallace Pun appreciated
I dont get the pun. Am I stupid? Could someone please explain?
TotallyNotJaxon Maybe a reference to another Caliborn song on the same album, Red Sucker...? Not totally sure.

Best homestuck piano cover in my opinion
this reminds me of the best [S] out there
It was really good. It's not my single favorite, but it's an excellent [S].
I mostly meant it as a joke but there is also a few reasons why its one of the best
I would agree that it's one of the best. The use of the expanded screen and irregular pacing combined with the surprising plot developments are all highly effective.

Ooh, a kawaii piano! :B
bro you spelled it wrong
its 'Kawai'
:B
XD
It's a kawaii kawai piano.
Aura Rosalyn XD
Just tell me how long did u practice this? Where did u get the tutorial?
I like doing a drum cover of this piano cover. COVERCEPTION
Hah. Hopefully my tempo is steady (...it's probably not, as I didn't have a metronome in my ear)

+KARKAT VANTAS Heh, yes. Game Over is to credit with me figuring out that this one would make a good arrangement.

giVe Me yOur skiLl plS D/;
Q frythedeliveryguy Q I don't think that's transferable...although perhaps if you're Thief of Mind or some such, you could try.
Do The Musicy Thing it does seem impossible D;
just a question though, how long did it take you to get this good? '
because I might start trying the piano it seems so fun :3!
Those are generally quite easy.
hOW?!
Agustina Gaudio Well, I can't compete with Kanaya's drinker fastness. But when I know exactly where I'm going, I can move quickly.
How did you learn to play this?
Did you try to learn it by listening to the song and trying to play piano at the same time?
Thanks :D
midi pls
I need a real piano, like your's, because mine is SO PLASTIC I HATE IT AAAAAAAH
but DUDE
wow, so cool
Yeah, it's hard to make synthesized pianos work well. Even the good ones tend to lack the necessary bass resonance.
Do The Musicy Thing Yes, exactly. I have to use different tones when I want any sort of sustain on it, but its not the same as other pianos.
