In the last 3 years I've: gotten a dog, gotten married, turned 30, defended my doctoral dissertation, gotten commissioned in the army, moved halfway across the American continent. Yet every step of the way you've been there with me MDB making me laugh and reminding me of the best memories of my childhood. Thank you man for everything you do!
a soldier that plays pokemon, now that's a reason why i'm living
@@deezhumblenutz7194 I was 10 when red/blue came to America. It's a part of my soul
On our way through, I battled Youngster Joey. I knew if I didn’t say what I did you’d all ask. Actually now that I think about it everyone ask anyway. Comments are good for the RUclips algorithm.
You have some nerve to not acknowledge Youngster Samuel, said Youngster Samuel
@@DigiRangerScott are you denying the power of Bird Keeper Denis?
@@aaronreinsmith6136 you dare talk lowly about Fisherman Wade and his strength!
@@davidpowell7889 Wade is by far the greatest. I'll grant that. He is so strong, I dared not speak his name.
Gold
I just wanted to say, Mah-Dry-Bread.
Its probably pretty cliche to say but watching your videos really makes my day just a bit better, thank you
I'm happy that it makes your days better, it's what they're there for!
@@MahDryBread magcargo does have utility with light screen and reflect
I do see it running into several problems especially vs maxie glacia Juan Wallace n Steven basically trainers that magcargo has 4x weaknesses to ground n water
Hopefully you don’t just abuse yawn for next weeks run, otherwise there’s no challenge and it learns it really early
@@MahDryBread I took a mint.
16:40 - MDB is using Return instead of Dig against targets that Dig is super effective against is because, 1) Dig only had 60 base power in Gen 2. However, even if it was 80 it would've done 160 damage. Whereas with Return, with max friendship, it has a base power of 102. Factoring in STAB makes it 152 _PLUS_ extra damage from Normal moves because of the 3rd Gym badge. This makes STAB Return one of the strongest moves in the game, and why MDB was able to one shot Pokemon you might've thought should've survived. (That and stat experience of course, but that applies ot all moves.)
True
For the same reason I don't get why he uses blizzard for the dragon gym. Sure its 240 power being super effective, but a badge boosted 153 power return will do a lot more damage, considering that rattata has more than twice more attack than special attack.
Except for double weaknesses, super high defense pokemon or steel/rock types, it never makes sense to pick any super effective move over return
Okay, 2 things:
1. STAB is only a 25% boost in this gen
2. None of the badges in gen 2 power anything up
But yes, STAB max Friendship neutral target Return is still *sliiiightly* stronger than supereffective gen 2 Dig
@@PME_FGC stab has always been 50% except for in PLA
@@PME_FGC Okay, 2 things:
1. To complement what SobbleGaming350 said, Pokemon Legends Arceus and Pokemon GO are the only games in the *entire series* that didn't have STAB = +50% damage. Including the spinoff Mystery Dungeon games.
2. Not only do certain badges boost stats like in Gen 1 (minus the glitch regarding stat drops), they continued to do so in Gen 3. And in Gen 2 there were boosts to moves of the corresponding Gym types, they just weren't explicitly _mentioned._ So the Flying Gym badge boosts Flying moves, Bug Gym badge boosts Bug moves, Normal Gym badge boosts Normal moves, etc.
So no, STAB max Friendship neutral target Return is _noticeably_ stronger than supereffective Dig in gen 2.
Gamefreak: No way can Golbat learn fly
Also gamefreak: Rattata should definitely learn blizzard
Doduo and Delibird can learn Fly despite being based on flightless birds.
@@oliverleonard7730 Vullaby can learn Fly despite being described as having too small wings to do so in the Pokedex.
Let the rat learn magic.
It's come full circle, first challenge run is this, now finally doing it in gen 2
I know there are no fossils to get in this game, but I thought I'd comment anyway to suggest that next time you play a game with a fossil you should pick the one opposite the one you say just to see who notices and comments.
That would be interesting.
He’s done it at least once before. It was certainly effective.
🤔
@@J3Puffin would you say it was super effective?
Because Comments are good for the RUclips algorithm
After this humiliation, Youngster Joey might refuse to help you by promoting your Twitter
God this brings me back, I remember when I first found you 3 years ago I just binged through all your challenges in a day or two. Haven't missed one since!
Same
SAME!
Congrats on the 3 years of these series. My little bro was the one who showed me your channel and I’ve been watching your challenges since then. Thanks for the laughs and actual struggles from these challenges.
Wow I literally remember gen 1 with Rattata. Feels like I just watched it
Nice work MDB
Your Pokémon Challenges make my day so much fun and full of amusement! Keep up the great work, man! I look up to you every day!
Always pleasant to get home from work and see the mah-dry-bread video at the end of my week
Wait hold on. I have already been watching you for three years? It feels like just yesterday you uploaded the first challenge run. My goodness how time flies.
RUclipsr Voice is just this generations, "You have a voice fit for radio".
I really wish you'd try this challenge on Heart Gold just to see you contend with the AI and moveset changes, as well as the EV system making it harder for a single pokemon.
Second comment because engagement;
Awesome challenge run!~ You may not be the youngster joey we deserve, but you're the one that we need.. uh I think that's how the quote goes lol
Also hella lookin' forward to an evolved pokemon run from ya! : D It'll be a great to see how you approach doing a run with a fairly common 4x weakness, but just reminds me of how using Gastrodon usually goes lol
Just gastropod things ig !
Lmao, it’s exam season and I’m watching this to procrastinate, you make videos to entertaining, lol.
Love your content man. Found you from your first pokemon challenges and have been watching your Pokemon and Mario party stuff since.
Your playthrough of Pokemon Stadium during Quarantine was one of the main things that kept me waking up each day.
i agree you got suitable voice for doing youtube. during the lockdown last couple years i got a hard time to fall asleep. watching you doing pokemon challenges and listening to your voice at night help me sleep better. i always watch before my bedtime. its not that your videos are boring but something about your video and your funny voice over help my insomnia. i still watch your videos to this day. cheers
I really like your challenges!!! I used to really like mono pokemon runs and i still do! But I've developed a soft spot for move restrictive runs. Maybe something like only moves that start with a specific letter (like Moves that start with H only) or something could lend an interesting challenge? I dunno tho lol. Hope you have a good day and keep up the great work!! You're a really fun dude!
I look forward to your video every Saturday! As a teacher I don’t get a lot of me time, and I almost always devote my saturdays for a bit to watch.
it's nice to see youngster joey back from his solitude distancing, yeah i remember one of MDB's joke there, and i also remember some MDB's run get stuck hard at Blue, but now it's breeze and stuck hard at Red. oh btw mccargo is one of Jake's favorite pokemon, just saying.......great video as always, keep it up bro.
I've been chanting slugma run for weeks, and I only just found out Magcargo would be more painful due to dual typing in gen 3. I figured Slugma would be pain enough due to lower stats, but if Magcargo would be a tougher run, then that would be cool to watch
at 6:28 the "u got to give the people what they want" has to be another beautiful wrestling easter egg!
I think you are allowed to restart the game until you get a good starter. Rattata is a physical attacker and gender is based on the attack stat, so I knew from the start that your rattata isn't in the top percentage of rattatas.
My thoughts on the Red battle: leftovers heal so little that a pink bow or king's rock would have been more helpful. Also, Blizzard does not have reduced accuracy from sun, you're thinling of Thunder.
I doubt there's a Pokémon as cool as this guy in your other videos!
I think a run with a full team of dittos would be neat, it would probably be pretty hard tho. Great video as always!
I would say you have a great RUclipsr voice as it is rather unique.
It has a pleasant sound to it, and you are able to put good emotion in it which is amazing for a commentary video! Same as some radio DJ's have a radio voice.
(2:33) It's like obligatory to get Youngster Joey's number when you play a Johto game.
(14:46) Maybe you could use Dig and hope Forretress blows while you're underground.
(21:29) Actually Blizzard does NOT lose accuracy in sunlight. You're probably thinking of Thunder, which drops to 50% accuracy during Sunny Day.
I thought the same thing with forretress.
Hurricane does that
@@danieldavies3092
Yeah, that too, but Hurricane isn't in Pokémon Gold.
After a bad weekend shift which was helped knowing I had this and Linkara videos to look forward too.
Gotta say, that segue into the khymera ad was nicely done. Also I think the built in miss chance for status moves is why I never use them even today, I know they're useful but mentally I still think they suck.
Jrose11: "Lorelee"
MandJTV: "Arkoos"
Mah-Dry-Bread: "Ruttutu"
Everyone's gotta have something only they say.
Wow it's been 3 years of Pokémon challenges already?? I think the first one I saw was the Platinum Pikachu run, so I've been watching for a while. Love seeing these each week!
Gen 1, Krabby run only being able to use HM’s! Great video again man, keep up the great work!
Unreal to see this come around again. I remember the RUclips algorithm recommending the very first of these challenges and I have been around since.
It's great to see that these keep coming they are such good videos and fun to watch been here since the first video of this series ( the Rattata challenge in Gen 1) keep up the good work
hmm I don't think it would be the hardest challenge, but I'd enjoy seeing a Scyther only run.
Poison and Bug types always get a hard time, I would love to see a poison team realised fully with the tactical playstyle, rarther then brute forcing fights like so many types do. Bug too are so often seen as a joke it would always be good to see more bug revenge which I am happy to see you've done before.
This was a straight fun run, I was surprised you didn't hit walls sooner, maybe Youngster Joey is on to something?
I wish only Poison types (plus thematic exceptions like Gliscor) could learn Toxic, or that it only Badly Poisoned when those mons used it. It's really weird that they're supposed to be this technical typing but the OG Poison utility move can be used by anyone and isn't even more effective on a Poison type.
EDIT: I forgot it can't miss when Poison types use it since Gen 6. And Bulbapedia says many Pokemon lost the ability to use it in BDSP? That's a step in the right direction, I guess.
@@critormiss6084 The TM for Toxic didn't exist in Sword & Shield, and they kept it consistent with BDSP, apparently. Which is something I'm quite annoyed about, since my main strategy with Umbreon, my favorite pokemon in the entire series, is now gone.
Also, Poison types cannot miss when using Toxic iirc, which is the plus they get when using it.
EDIT: Just noticed the first half of your edit, whoops. That's what I get for just skimming through comments looking for one to reply to for the RUclips algorithm, I guess.
Scyther would be hell in gen 1, for the same reason that he deemed Eevee impossible; it doesn't learn anything other than Normal moves and thus can only hit ghosts with Bide. Mimic makes Agatha less of an annoyance but that doesn't change the fact he has to fight mandatory channelers to get through the middle of the game.
Fun fact: Despite hail existing in Generation 3, no weather condition affected Blizzard until Generation 4, where hail makes it a sure-hit move. However, in Gen 4 (specifically Diamond and Pearl due to a bug that was fixed in Platinum and onward), it had a 30% chance to bypass Protect and Detect if using when it is hailing.
Also, harsh sunlight (the sunny day effect) halves damage from water moves. While I'm not certain, it may be possible that Surf might not have been able to take out Manbar under these conditions (or at the very least might have been an unlikely damage range between a high and low roll) while Blizzard would guaranteed finish Manbar of (provided it landed the 70%).
I assume Blizzard worked like that because the coding worked like this:
- roll the dice
- if the RNG rolls on "miss", check if it's Hailing
- - if it IS Hailing, force the move to hit, skipping any other checks (including "is the target using Protect?")
- - if it's NOT Hailing, force the move to miss
I mean half of the time I forget how long these take to make and when I remember that I appreciate it doble so thanks for all the videos
I’ve been subscribed since 2008, I haven’t watched any of you videos. That’s because I been waiting for this all this time 👍
As soon as you said manbar I knew I had remembered that name from the first time! I feel like ive been watching you for so long now!
Youngster Joey isn't going to leave you alone after this humiliation to his 1% Rattata.
Whenever he says "it was super easy" I finish in my head with "barely an inconvenience"
Youngster Joey says he took the Helix Fossil. He knew if he didn't tell you what he took, you'd all ask. Actually, everyone ask him anyway. Comments are good for the RUclips algorithm.
Requesting Pokemon B2W2 With Only One Chinchou.
You gotta start doing Gen 6 challenges just so you can use the clothing stores to transition to your Khimyra sponsorships 😂
Thank you for finally acknowledging your pronunciation of Rattata. I was always confused by it lol. Most of my friends and I would pronounce it ruh-TAT-uh
That's how I've always pronounced it.
If anyone hasn't watched through Flash Trash, this is your reminder to do it, honestly it's such a fun series to just have on in the background, plus the best bits are HILARIOUS
13:54 - I think it'll be fine. Honestly the run has looked incredibly smooth so far. Stats may be what they are. But Rattata seems pretty poised to cruise to victory.
I was thinking of eventually streaming a challenge like these as a way of paying homage to you (obviously I’d say you inspired the challenge) i wanted to show some appreciation to one of the people who inspired me to stream :)
I'm calling it Rahtata because of you and I'm ready to fight everyone who isn't
Until I started watching MDB I had only ever heard it pronounced Ruh-TAT-uh
Your pronunciation of 'Rattata' is surely better than mine as I grew up thinking there was an additional 't' at the end and to this day, struggle with not audiating it as 'Ratatat'
Me: "Say rat."
Dry: "Rat."
Me: "Say tata."
Dry: "Tata."
Me: "Say Rat-tata."
Dry: "ACCORDING TO ALL KNOWN LAWS OF AVIATION..."
When i hear youtuber voice i typically think two things:
The stereotypical overenthusiastic voice of someone who does youtube,
And a voice that's recognizable and cleanly edited
You came very close to winning at level 95. Instead of leveling up, you could've went and got the TM for Thunder, but then again it requires a ton of coins, and with low Special Attack, it may not have been a one shot, but there's a chance it could've paralyzed Blastoise and caused it not to attack, and the other downside of Thunder is it's only 70% accurate. Great challenge as always.
Mah-dry-bread how about, “can I complete Pokémon red/blue with only 1 missingNo.”
That could be a decent idea but instead use ????? In gold
Pokemon challenge:
Pokemon FireRed with only a single Growlithe.
Average stats, shallow movepool and in a region that is harsh on firetypes.
It would be harder to use a Fire type in Hoenn.
I have wanted a growlithe challenge for years.
You have gotten so much better since the last time you used this pokemon. Wife and I love you mdb, keep it up.
Ps wrestling empire series is AMAZING
Along the vein of "that's how I called it when I was a kid", me and my brothers never really took the time to sound out the name, so it just became whatever rolled off the tongue best. For us that was Rat-uh-tat-uh.
I still can't believe as a kid playing this I didn't know you could go back to kanto. Feel like I missed half the game. Love these videos though and at least I get to see what I missed
Coming back to the very beginning. I suggest Emerald with only one Sunkern to pay greater homage to the good old days
Jrose11 just did that one if you're itching to see a sunkern run in emerald
I can't believe that Rattata video was 3 years ago. It crazy how time flies
I just like hearing your voice in the background when I'm doing stuff haha. I wanna see you do a ditto run. Don't think you have before.
Really enjoyed the challenge run great video keep up the good videos
Interesting. I always run the pronunciation of Magcargo together - Mag-Cargo, like luggage. But... yeah, it's probably the escargot rhyme instead. I have legitimately no idea how often Mah-Dry-Bread gets pronunciations wrong, but I'll go with a snail based pun any day of the week.
Rattata was my absolute favourite Pokémon as a kid. Love the challenge. 😀
I feel like RUclipsr voice is a lot like Radio voice. You just have a nice voice that enhances the listening and watching experience basically
One thing that's great about Rattata is that most of its moves are all benefiting from STAB. That's why it excelled early and sailed through the challenge to Blue.
Wow, three years later and it comes full circle. Nicely done!
always end up missing your episodes when they premier. kinda wish youtube would notify me when people did that.
I was supposed to listen to the video while writing, but I was so caught up that I ended up intensly watching
Hey, I did a very similar run not too long ago! HeartGold as Youngster Joey (allowing Rattata to evolve because Joey does in rematches). Keep up the good work!!
"Gen One Rattata Run", my new favourite tongue twister.
As waited for this challenge for 3 years, and it was worth it.
I was surprised at your pronounciation of Magcargo, but after I thought about it for like a second it actually makes sense. Just hadn't heard it before, I think.
When I heard you say you got to give the people what they want I imagined it as Excalibur saying it with you and youngster Joey hugging rattata with some black glasses.
Hey mdb! Your videos are always great! Always looking forward to them!
Since you are always using weak Pokémon you might want to try and reset for a male exemplar cause It has more dv guaranteed in attack (female pokemon are always 0-1 Attack dv and male ones are 2-15). Think this might help a bit!
have you ever thought of revisiting previous challenges to see if you can find other strategic ways to complete the run at lower levels?
I love your voice haha, I am argentinian and I don't understand all you says, but its great to hear, maybe they mean that
TIL Rattata can use blizzard. Honestly this run went easier than I thought it would up until you got to Red.
As for the Magcargo, I played Omega Ruby with a fire team and while I loved the Magcargo I used in that run. However, I would not want to be doing a full run with it and that's with a Magcargo that has better moves than what you will have access to. Sure the dual typing is not great but I predict that the speed stat will really be the cause of most problems.
Really looking forward to seeing what you do!
MDB ur definitely gonna be a better Rattata trainer than youngster Joey 😂😂
it's ironic- I was just watching your fist Rattata video yesterday
Ah yes, the perfect movie sequel to the original challenge video.
Youngster Joey Challenge 2: Electric Boogaloo
With the second coming of Rattata... next one HAS to be Sunkern. Though, I can't say in which gen...
I want to say Emerald but I feel like Sunkern defeating anything on Steven's team would take a miracle.
@@That_Doctor_Del_Fella Assuming the AI on Skarmory even feels generous enough... But I draw a line on Cradily, not even Metagross
Gen 1 is somewhat doable I think. But Gen 4? Oh boy, Platinum would be HELL!
Aaaaand, now I wanna see that 😂
Gen I. I'm sure it'll be fine. Red/Blue is notoriously perfect in it's coding, so adding a Pokemon from the future won't have ANY negative effects
Congratulations! I was surprised by how easy some of the matches were.
The Man-Bar!! Hopefully it doesn't run out.
Wow, that transition was butter smooth
Your video are always a blast to watch especially while I’m eating
With all the khimyra ads I really need to see MDB as a t shirt model on the sight!
Manbar subsequently retired from fighting and founded Manbar’s Institute of Higher Learning.
Finally, someone else who pronounced Rattata the same way I did as a kid!
Obviously not right away, but sometime in the future it would be cool to see you do this challenge again in Pokemon Crystal Clear. Great gen 2 romhack. You'll probably need a team of 6 Rattata because of how Crystal Clear works but you can skip youngster Joey until you have all 16 badges and fight him at his ultimate power
A fun fact about Ruticata is that people think you kill Blue’s Ruticate but in actuality it makes sense why it wasn’t on his team as he is going to an area filled with ghost types and Ruttata and Ruticate can only learn normal moves in gen 1 even struggle was normal in gen 1 so it’s impossible for a natural one to hit a ghost. This could be fixed with Tms but why would you waste one on something already weaker than what you’re fighting. The only real mystery is why he didn’t replace it with another mon but it’s still better having an open slot than a Ruticate in this context.
I assume he literally just got done tossing it in the PC right before the fight, after the end of the fight he specifically says he caught a Cubone at the tower who also isn't on his team, so he probably decided the Raticate was useless around the time he caught the Cubone, went to the PC to box it, decided not to replace it with the Cubone, he does mention he can't find a Marowak in the tower so maybe he was trying to replace it with Marowak? Just a guess.
Nah raticate is pretty infamous for being able to use all kind of coverage through tm. Feel like maybe Blue just ditched it.
Are you just intentionally misspelling their names?
Rut-tutt-tuh
Youngster Joey would be proud
the shirts are actually really comfy, got 3 and they're all good in and out the house
Idea for a challenge run:
A run with ONLY new moves. If you use a move for a gym battle, you must replace it before taking on the next gym.
MANBAR IS BACK BABYYY
Manbar the destroyer of Pokémon
A fun run and for a moment I thought you might beat it just shy of level 100, so close but better than I was expecting from Rattata.
Also, I'm not going to miss a chance to ask for Pokemon gold/silver with a single Murkrow
Silly fact, if an Alakazam were to use Hyper Beam, it would deal less damage than a Rattata Return. A Charmander would deal slightly more than that Alakazam with Hyper Beam, but still fall short of the Rat's Return. (This assumes max happiness and equal EVs and DVs/IVs for gen 1-3.)
Some more practical information is that the Rat's Return will overpower any (physical) move 75 power or lower that does not have two effective modifiers in favor. (Not very effective vs super effective, for example.)
