@@Peterthefarriergreat job! 1 question: before applying that poultice, why not first spray a disinfectant (chlorhexadine or iodine) such as how the cow hoof trimmers do ? Thank you for caring for these horses!
Your so good with horses. You have an amazing temperament to cope with situations like this knowing she’s sore 😊 the world needs more farriers like you. Good luck jaffa with the abscess. Hopefully she starts feeling a lot better soon. Thank you again for the video ❤️❤️
Actually, when my then husband and I owned our Guest Ranch, we would oftentimes use a large Kotex Pad underneath the pack straps if they were irritating the horse!
Even vets often use everyday items when dealing with wound care etc, especially when dealing with wildlife and such (often used with wildlife and strays as they don't have owners who can pay the vets high fees so that's why everyday items are often used as they are much cheaper and also easy to get hold of) I know that when I worked as a vet nurse we even used different size tupperware as anesthesia containers for small animals 😊
I had to look it up. A Poultice, for the uninitiated, is basically a Hot Compress. It’s meant to soak up the infection while also providing excellent pressure redistribution away from the abscess area as well as keep said area warm. So, as someone who has watched more cow hoof trimming videos than horse trimming videos, looking at this has me almost yelling “where’s the salicylic acid paste?” But I know in the back of my head that it’s not always necessary, but it’s a good thing to have on hand if you wish to fight off an infection
One of the benefits of treating horses vs treating cattle is that gentler treatments are an option. Things like the salicylic acid are necessary because the cows probably won’t be treated again for weeks, while a horse owner can treat and change dressings every day as needed. The less caustic the treatment, the easier it is for healthy tissue to come back.
I love how patient you are, adapting your work to the horse rather than causing her pain to make her work to get her trim done. The diaper is a first for me, as was the horse hoof abscess. As a fan of the Hoof GP, I'm not unfamiliar with hoof abscesses, they're just very different from.a cows hoof abscess. (And if you ever wanna sew some gross, but compelling viewing watch a cow hoof restoration with an abscess. I'll have to recommend your strategy for packing and protecting hooves, tho. This was ingenious, really. Probably more pricey than the salicylic acid powder, gauze and vet wrap, but this gives better coverage and possibly better padding. Well done, Brother. Keep up the good work. I'll be back for more!
I was amazed that it's just you and the horse. On the Hoof GP channel, they have a cow squeezer to hold the cows in place. With you, it's all you with a hurt, 1000+ lb horse. I know they're intelligent, but sheesh, that's a dangerous, heavy and back breaking job!
This is my first time seeing your video. I. subscribed To your channel, I do appreciate the care. You give to the beautiful creatures. You take care of thank you.
The cattle hoof trimmers don't have anything on a good farrier. I enjoy their videos but when it comes to hands on work. A farrier's job is much harder. You don't see him using a crush. All respect to him.
I don't know what you used for the poltice. I soak abscessed feet in hot water with epsom salt, then I use a small syringe to inject colloidal silver down into the abscess hole. If I don't have colloidal silver available, I use iodine. Then, I give the horse Chyawanprash 3x/day in their feed. I divide a 1kg container into 3 feedings for a 1000 lb. horse. A person could divide it into 2 feedings. Chyawanprash tastes like clove. Most horses chow it down, some take a little getting used to. You can get a sugar free version, if needed. I do this for about 3 days to help the infection go away and boost the horse's immune system. I'll go longer, if needed. It helps avoid the antibiotic route. Chyawanprash is highly dissolvable in hot water. I suggest looking up the benefits of Chyawanprash. I'll also include liquid probiotics to help get rid of infection.
I'll bet you wished you had a "Crush". Would be so much easier. You're good at this old fashioned way of doing your job. I think i was 11 the last time i saw a person using those old tools. But i CAN tell how much you love taking care of the horses. Nice.
She was a jewel, considering how much pain had to be in that hoof. Hopefully, the medicine and gravity will work to get that abscess drained and healing.
Amazing job, I never knew nappies had more than one purpose😁poor Jaffa, she looked really uncomfortable, and really hard work for you, mad respect for what you do, hopefully now she can heal well, will there be a follow up video on Jaffa? Thank you so much for posting, and happy easter to you and your family, take care.👍💙🐴
I was raised with horses my particular horse was named sugar which I'm not sure why because she bucked everyone off but me..lol...as a child I can remember cleaning my horses hooves and cleaning the stalls. Such good memories.
Very innovative use of a disposable nappy as a bandage. 😁 I bet the horse felt a heck of a lot better after that abscess burst. A good farrier can do more than a vet in some cases.
Great job really enjoyed watching hw u do your job . Never realized hw strong u must be to be able to handle that horses care . Hope the horse gets better real soon !! 8:09
Your compassion for the horses is what keeps me watching, You never hurry through. Most excellent work.
Thank you

Wonderful to watch you work so carefully and with kindness for the horse. Loving your commentary of the process it makes it so much more interesting.
You are a very caring soul. The horses and whoever you cross paths with in your life are very fortunate.
You just showed what a very kind and caring person you are. I'm sure Jaffa is very thankful
They may not understand what you’re saying, but surely they feel soothed by your calm voice. 😊
Thank. I will be going back in a few days to make sure she is doing better. She was very patient with me.
Peter, THANK YOU FOR HELPING JAFFA!!! You are a good person, who cares about Jaffa!!! I THANK GOD, FOR MORE PEOPLE LIKE YOU!!! 😇🐎🐴⛑♥
Your kindness shines through and no matter the pain to yourself, you are putting her first. Bless you 😘
I was fascinated by the process, more so by your compassion for your patient, thanks for sharing this, hope Jaffa recovered well, she was a good girl.

gotta say...wasn't expecting to see a diaper used during horse hoof care...that was a new one. Well done! looks like you got that before it got worse

Yes the nappies do the same job as the poultice drawing out the infection they have been used for many years here in ireland
I’m impressed at how deft he was getting it on the hoof… must be a hands on Dad also!!! 😃😂😃👏🏼
Yes they are fabulous used them often on many wounds over the yesrs
So awesome that these animals have someone to care for them and help them. It's so amazing. God bless you guys.
Thank you Peter for helping this very ouchie horse. I enjoy watching your work. ❤
You are gentle
This looks like bloody hard work for both of you! Good job.
Excellent wrap job on the hoof. You are patient & kind.
Well done Jaffa, she was so well behaved despite the pain, and well done Peter for sorting it!

Thank you she is a good mare.
I've been waiting for you to come back.
Imo, you're one of the best farriers out there, and love watching you work.
I've had an abcess and it's was so painful. But as soon as it's opened and the pressure goes away... it's amazing how much better it feels so soon.
I love how patient and gentle you were with her. ❤
One thing that has always struck me about farriers is what a strong back you need!
My dad's a farrier and I'm sure he will agree with you there and legs as they look like they are squatting
Not only a strong back but also an extremely strong mind. Some horses can be a pain in the bud not to mention the owners.🌾🌻
@@daleenalberts5829 Ha. Very true. But I'd prefer a mardy horse over a mardy human any day!
And thighs. Squatting like that for so long, gahhh

It took me a second to realize what you meant by a nappie! In the US we call them diapers. I have to admit it fit and worker perfectly!!! 😂
