  • Chest freezers are pretty great. My wife and I got one to enable ourselves to stock various foods as they become available throughout the season. But like any chest freezer, eventually it turns into a gigantic pile. In this video, I'll show you exactly how my wife and I organized it to find any food, no matter how long ago we put it in.
    Figured I'd mention -- I totally glossed over the dimensions of my chest freezer. It's 10.2 cubic feet, 44" W x 33.5" H x 26" D. These dimensions allow for 6 of the bags to fit snugly + a few other things we keep in there.
    Someone in the comments also mentioned a really terrific idea for labelling the freezer bags -- double sided luggage labels attached to the handles. I think this would work a lot better than unreliable glues and adhesives.

    Labels - glue style, wouldn't recommend, reference only:

    Great system!. Why not use luggage tags and affix them to the handles? I''m going to try your system and think I'll do that. Or even plastic name tags. I just cleaned out my freezer and ended putting plastic containers in them for now, but they are bulky and the tape wouldn't stick, etc. I'm going to get some of those bags and luggage or name tags, written on both sides in large letters.

      I think attaching double sided luggage tags to the handles is the best idea I've heard so far! Simple, elegant, and reliable. I'm going to pin this comment, and leave a link for anyone looking for tags in this comment and in the description. Thank you!

    Spreadsheets are a great idea for inventory. I've thought about sticking an old tablet to a fridge/freezer to more or less do nothing but display the spreadsheet, recipes, and of course music

      Yeah man - I considered the tablet idea too, and might still be handy. I've found it a major point of convenience to have it on my phone, can double check what I have even while grocery shopping. It would be super cool if food came with RFID stickers and the freezer had a reader automated to the spreadsheet 🤔

    I used the bag system as well! It’s an awesome way to go. I also put a 1.5 ltr bottle of water in each bag so when there is a power cut I know stuff in the freezer is ok for a while as there is a frozen water bottle in each cooler bag. During the storm season, I also put extra of water bottles to freeze across the top layer giving extra protection from defrosting as we can loose power here for two or three days :(

      Love the water bottle idea in each bag. I usually keep frozen water bottles in disorganized freezer in case the power goes out. A full freezer is more likely to do well when there's a power outage. But a bottle in each bag sounds good with this system.

    Okay. This is genius. I just got a chest freezer for our bulk meats and dog meat. I was about to buy some plastic stackable storage containers... this is so genius and way cheaper! I love the handles to just easily pull things out! Yes! Thanks for uploading this. I'm absolutely doing this as well as the spreadsheet which I already use for food budgeting too. Thanks!

    We use a white board by the freezer for inventory. Very EZ to categorize and change with a dry marker when food goes in or out, or product changes.

    thats actually very smart as it is forgiving in terms of wasting space. I was going to do plastic containers... but was afraid of the loss of space due to ridged packing of plastic. I think this will allow you to condense better and gives you more storage space. smart. also I wonder if it maintains temp should there be a future failure/power outage.

    • @Bootstrappin
      @Bootstrappin  4 месяца назад

      Thanks - yeah, I do think to an extent they would be able to extend the life of your frozen items in case of a power outage. It also makes moving out of the house and into a new one more feasible.

    You know ... I see shear GENIUS here. Seriously. What a GREAT way to not only organize the freezer but also to be able to know exactly what is in there ALL the time. Fantastic use of Google sheets. Since the bags are already in the freezer, I do have to wonder if they really need to be insulated freezer bags. What about putting to some good use some of those excess recycle food bags that we bring our groceries home in. It puts them to good use and we already have them anyway. Just a thought .Thank You for the video. Greetings from Ontario, Canada.

      Thank you so much! Agreed, those bags will probably do fine as well as long as they're cold resistant; I've found certain plastic bags become really brittle in the freezer. One thing I forgot to mention is that with freezer bags, should you ever need to defrost or scrape the ice in the freezer, that provides you a decent means to keep things cold for some time.

    My wife is quite meticulous about managing our freezer. We got hooked up with a local farm here in New Jersey and buy half a farm raised hog once a year along with farm raised beef. Her system for managing the freezer is similar to yours, only she has a clip board with an inventory of the contents. We also have 2 LG refrigerators that are are in a configuration of a Sub-Zero double wide, what I refer to as the pore mans Sub-Zero. Lucky for me the LG fridges are far more reliable then a Sub-Zero.

    • @Bootstrappin
      @Bootstrappin  Год назад +1

      Local farms are the way to go, it's what spurred us to get a freezer to begin with. For the first time we have a farmer who raises her own pigs with a big emphasis on humanity/health - terrific quality. I've never heard of Subzero until you mentioned it -- $14000??? Does it do grocery shopping for you or something?

      We started out looking for farm grown eggs and found Far wind farms in Williamstown NJ just about 20 min from us. Turned out they raised hogs and cows for harvest. We were looking for farm raised meat but would have had to drive all the way to Lancaster PA, that was out of the question. As for Sub-Zero refrigerators they are junk. You would think something that expensive would be built to last but no. Sub Zero, Wolf are just so much junk. We bought a Bertazzoni oven, had it for a week and it started leaking gas. bertazzoni looks high end and what I thought was good quality turned out to be just more junk costing 4 grand.

      @@mrkrasker9609 that's awesome, great to have that sort of thing nearby. Lancaster is somewhat closer to me in MD, and makes sense that it'd be holistic central on account of so many Amish being there. And that's really disappointing to hear, because here part of me was hoping that with enough money, quality could be bought - but maybe in the last 100 years or so we really *have* forgotten/lost the knowledge to build reliably. Of course, the real mystery is how an "inferior" product like LG outperforms them. Really gets the noggin' joggin'.

    Why would you need "insulated" bags? Family Dollar had reusable shopping totes 2 for $1.30. Wouldn't those work as well?

    • @Bootstrappin
      @Bootstrappin  3 месяца назад

      A couple of reasons. The insulation is handy in so far as keeping everything cool even if you need to pull it out of the freezer. But most importantly, we looked for bags specifically made to survive cold temperatures. A lot of plastics in my experience become very brittle in the freezer, so there's a good chance that a regular bag would rip/break pulling it in or out of the freezer.
