Smooth nostalgia :) This was my introduction to RPG games, together with Ishar 2 and Might and Magic 5. We played this game back in high school, in the mid 1990s. We had no sources of information here in Eastern Europe, so it was trial and error. We spent weeks trying to finish the game, each on our own, and we shared any tips on progress. We did not discover you can use those emerald blades to fight ghosts in the White Tower, so we just grinded it out and ran thru as fast as possible, trying to minimize the brutal onslaughts (that music is forever linked to this experience)... Or to get lost in the Urbish mines, trying to figure our what is next... Discovering you can freeze the swamp and reach new areas... Fighting unending wasp swarms... Getting the random rare drops such as the crown on the first floor of the tower, or the extra kite shield...Or the way I somehow created (and was able to re-create, so maybe it was not a bug but an eastern egg) an "illegal item" by placing a specific halberd to Baccata's hand in the swamp, basically enabling him to carry three weapons till the end of the game (one "baked in" and invisible, increasing his base attack) and increasing his attack even further, bringing him to lev 9 or 10 on fighter... I remembered all of it :) And to see the game can be finished - with knowledge of the story, mechanics and events - in an afternoon, is entertaining... Good memories, the game is a masterpiece - consistent visual style, story, music, gameplay... The middle part, where you had access to many areas - forests, mines, the Tower... and you had to figure out what to do, is really close to today's open world games. But it was tied together with narrative and atmosphere. And I got to experience it during the formative high school years, where you really could dive deep into these games and everything was somehow better :) Oh well, nice trip down the memory lane, after 27 or so years here in 2022.
My grandparents bought this game some 15-20 years ago, knowing they had a PC and knew I was a PC gamer. Whenever I visited them when they still had their PC as a kid, I would always be excited to play it.

I remember playing this and eventually finding a second green skull in a tree-hole which was a quite powerful weapon. Normally only one can be found that is meant to kill the Larkhon. I also read that it was planned that Dawn joins the party when freed but this was dropped in the final game. Someone wrote he was able to hex-edit the game so that Dawn is member of the party. I guess this was cut as the final battle would be too easy then as all members should be very powerful in Castle Cimmeria. Honestly i liked idea of 3 as a game that introduced us to Westwood-verse, the only things that saddens me is just what a bitch was EA to Westwood studios, and what could've happened in better conditions. I wonder if that was this game or another. And to think, now I'm introducing my dad to games like Red Dead nearly 25 years later...
This game was better than Dungeon Master and Legend of Grimrock. It had a better story that really pulled you in and it wasn't so repetitive. Also the Eye of the Beholder series was really great too!
Best game ever. Period. Couple of comments : - why isn't anyone using the cube on the ghosts? The cube kills ghosts and fills mana at the same time! - hand of fate spell is an Easter egg...of course! - in Hand of fate, you can open the letters with steam at the beginning. They are from Scotia to Richard! - I remember that using both sandals of silence and cloak of concealment may have an effect. I never figured what exactly. Thank you for this let's play! Good stuff!
1:28:08 - I couldn't figure out that I should use the green skull to beat the dragon, so after many attempts I managed to kill it by repeatedly throwing the sword. It took a lot of time and effort. But then I stuck on the next level because I couldn't find the way out and eventually quit after spending many hours there.
Thanks so much for the upload. So many childhood memories. I never could get past the white tower, those spectres were too strong. I see now the knack of defeating them lies in walking backwards while slashing. I also never made full use of magic. Gutted.
I love this game. I got stuck at dawns gate as a kid. I then found out I needed dawns key, but couldn't find it on my second playthrough and gave up. Hope I get to see past the gate in this video! :D
I remember freaking out in the Draracle caves with the flying spiders. The white tower was a breeze when I found out you could use the Vaelen's cube on the wraiths and the apparitions. And on my second playthrough I finally found the Minotaur in the White Tower. He hits hard!
Loved this game as a kid. Never got to hear the voice acting though, since I only had the 3.5" disk version and didn't have a sound card anyway. Clearly, I missed out.
no, not really. There are ways to make it more efficient. Especially, you have to fight more than that. The more you fight, the more you gain experience. Bruteforcing the first level is the way to go. With Ak'shel you sleep more often, but you get stronger faster.
How do they keep mechanisms in good working condition like in the dungeon at 13:30 You can clearly see moss growing on the walls, someone must be cleaning all the mechanisms weekly or something or else nothing works
What a great game! Too bad I have missed it in my childhood while playing Beholders, Black Crypt, Ultima Underworld, Chaos Strikes Back, Dungon Master, etc... but it was very cool to see it now! Many thanks for the upload!
I remember playing this, Lands of Lore III and Lost Eden on my nan's computer when I was over there around 1996-98 or something, the White Tower place is oddly familiar seeing again but I doubt I got that far... I deffo remember the camp-after-every-battle tactic, the spears/arrows coming at the screen, and of course Baccata being the coolest guy; gotta love that voice and manner. Unsure if I played Ak'Shel much back then, he's cool though, he's like a polite, lizardy(?) magical Freddy Krueger Also looks like it was all worth it to see that weird grin/grimace the King pulled at the end, amazing
I loved to play Dungeon master and Eye of the Beholder II & III. Never got my hands on the first one :) In that time it was also possible to never hear about Lands of lore which is what happened to me. Amazing how information is a given these days.

Patrick Stewart's heightened RP is so delightful to the ear, today as much as back then. Lands of Lore was a tad obsolete even in its day, since Ultima Underworld had already wiped away the square block based cRPG; nonetheless, it remains a valid game, after all these years.
One of my favourite games, just my 2 cents: Crossbow "Valkyrie" is one of the two weapons that always hit. And it's ranged Thus it must be applied always. There is a Wand of Lightning in one of the roots in the Yvel woods. You need a certain high rogue skill to find it though, not sure if it's cumulative 13 or one of the party members has to have 6. There is a swamp mouth that will gulp your useless items and provide 60 silver for each. Even for a rock. Certain quest items it won't gulp.
Loved this game back in the day. Have both floppy and CD versions with boxes, manuals etc. Fantastic game, great music and very very good artwork. Westwood Studios were a great developer. As for main character, go with Ak'shel just as in this playthrough :).
Is there any information available regarding the "unique" weapons/armor/etc. (Long Sword "Flayer", Long Sword "Protector", Long Sword "Sexy-Maker", etc.)? Some affect Might/Protection directly, while others don't seem to have a visible (or significant) impact. Some of them have unique designs (and are found late in the game), so is it possible they serve some purpose? Or were the programmers just f*cking with us (like when Victor sells that Jeweled Dagger for 3,000 --- if it has the same attack power as a "Weathered/Shite" Dagger, is it literally the same)? What about all those Throwing Stars (same as throwing a rock?), or Bows/Crossbows with weird-ass names (I know Valkyrie shoots fireballs, and there's another that always misses, but is it possible that some work "better" against certain enemies, or have other "unseen" impacts --- the way the Emerald Blade was "coded" to be effective against ghosts)? Another quick example: when that idiot traveler gives you the Cloak of Concealment in the bar in Yvel (assuming you gave him 5 crowns back in Opinwood --- instead of killing him, which is much more fulfilling), does that item do anything special? Or he's just taking the piss ("Here - take my matching Socks of Serendipity as well!")? I can't believe all those unique items are just a waste of time - my only possible explanation would be that the programmers initially wanted to include several different effects/impacts/attributes/etc., but that maybe they were removed eventually because they were bugged/etc. I've seen a few mentions regarding the possibility of hacking this game, so I thought it might be possible to check the actual programming/coding to see if there are certain specifics that aren't initially noticeable. I loved this game back in the day, but after beating it for the first time, I always wanted to play it "optimally", and all those weird-ass items always left me confused.
I used to play these dungeon crawlers back in the 90s. Even so, I have no idea how people didn't just get completely lost. I can't even remember how I avoided it.
Was Conrad voiced by Guy Cihi, the guy who voiced James Sunderland in Silent Hill 2? I can't find any confirmation of this on IMDB or MobyGames but it sounds just like him.
(SPOILER) there are 2 statues in gorkha swamp 1 statue give you 50 silver coins the other heals your entire party fully but 1 statue has swamp if you go there you die instantly place an item from inventory to statue and done that's my tip if you need free space
I played this in high school. I had it on CD but I don't remember it was dubbed. The white tower with the ghosts was annoying as hell, I had to go back and gain XP for my party so I could defeat the ghosts more easily. :P
I had the CD version of this game, and on the box, it proudly advertised the fact that yes, ol' Pat was the voice of king Richard... course, this was 1993, when TV actors, when they wanted a bit more lunch money, would phone in voice work for the budding high-end video games industry... except Stewart actually tries, no matter what role he's in.
I guess it's still the original midi files you are looking for, but if you want te listen to them like you want (I think you mean like the original OPL FM chip on adlib/soundblaster?) you don't want to use the build-in midi-softwaresynth in windows nowadays because it acts like a wavetable and thus sounds different. I personally prefer to use a soundfont of much better quality to play the midi's, it's great. XMPlay can load soundfonts, for instance: Musical Box.sf2 and WeedsGM3.sf2 are great.
Anyone else not use the thing in the swamp where you can put an item in, be a rock, stick, almost anything, and it gives you 60 coins ? I did that with all the crap I had and bought a SHIT TON of fireball wands for 150 and pwnd everyone super fast.
So much comfort playing this in the background while i work
I did the same as u

There is a swamp mouth that will gulp your useless items and provide 60 silver for each. Even for a rock. Certain quest items it won't gulp.
Those damned snakes in the tower..
Doesn't valens cube work for most of those ghosts though? I seem to recall using that when I was younger
Loved this game back in the day. Have both floppy and CD versions with boxes, manuals etc. Fantastic game, great music and very very good artwork. Westwood Studios were a great developer. As for main character, go with Ak'shel just as in this playthrough :).
The music for this game slaps so hard
Yup. And all other also made a great job considering the level of the computer graphics that time.
God damn that delay in the witches laugh at the beginning lol
All the lovely fantasy cliches! ITS BEYOND AWESOME!!
It had a map feature, the video barely showed it.
Who was the voice at the start? Kind of sounds like Patrick Stuart.
You misspelled but correct.
Bard's tale!! i want this also :)
Was Conrad voiced by Guy Cihi, the guy who voiced James Sunderland in Silent Hill 2? I can't find any confirmation of this on IMDB or MobyGames but it sounds just like him.
A classic from my childhood
@LordNifty Depends if you like to glitch them out and levitate though them :)
Richard the Lionheart narrated this game, so cool.
2:37:15 i almost cried. Why'd you drop em blade ?
(SPOILER) there are 2 statues in gorkha swamp 1 statue give you 50 silver coins the other heals your entire party fully but 1 statue has swamp if you go there you die instantly place an item from inventory to statue and done that's my tip if you need free space
I want to open my wallet in a shop and tell the clerk "there are silver coins in here."
I played this in high school. I had it on CD but I don't remember it was dubbed. The white tower with the ghosts was annoying as hell, I had to go back and gain XP for my party so I could defeat the ghosts more easily. :P
Captain Picard was bustin ass way back in Lands of Lore!
WOW, I've never heard of this game...and I was a big Eye of the Beholder fan
Been playing this on my MiSTer using a mt32-pi. I really love it :)
this is one the more interesting looking dungeon crawls ive seen
I had the CD version of this game, and on the box, it proudly advertised the fact that yes, ol' Pat was the voice of king Richard... course, this was 1993, when TV actors, when they wanted a bit more lunch money, would phone in voice work for the budding high-end video games industry... except Stewart actually tries, no matter what role he's in.
Does Any one know HOW in GAME you know the larkhon is weak to acid or the skull.
One of the best clasic RPG's of all time at the time
I guess it's still the original midi files you are looking for, but if you want te listen to them like you want (I think you mean like the original OPL FM chip on adlib/soundblaster?) you don't want to use the build-in midi-softwaresynth in windows nowadays because it acts like a wavetable and thus sounds different.
This, Ultima 8, and Ultima Underworld 2.. stole my time as a kid lol
