I remember magazine ads back in the day hyping the SHIT out of the fact that Patrick Stewart voiced the king. Voice acting was still new in video games back then and most of the voices were done by the company employees.
hahah, I have this game BUT in german and I'm finnish and I don't speak german, I don't even know how I got access to it but I got it sometime when I got my first PC in like 1999. Completely unplayble since I dont know what any of the text says.
This seems to be the same vid from the Longplays channel, directly by the author, so I repost myself here: Smooth nostalgia :) This was my introduction to RPG games, together with Ishar 2 and Might and Magic 5. We played this game back in high school, in the mid 1990s. We had no sources of information here in Eastern Europe, so it was trial and error. We spent weeks trying to finish the game, each on our own, and we shared any tips on progress. We did not discover you can use those emerald blades to fight ghosts in the White Tower, so we just grinded it out and ran thru as fast as possible, trying to minimize the brutal onslaughts (that music is forever linked to this experience)... Or to get lost in the Urbish mines, trying to figure our what is next... Discovering you can freeze the swamp and reach new areas... Fighting unending wasp swarms... Getting the random rare drops such as the crown on the first floor of the tower, or the extra kite shield... Or the way I somehow created (and was able to re-create, so maybe it was not a bug but an eastern egg) an "illegal item" by placing a specific halberd to Baccata's hand in the swamp, basically enabling him to carry three weapons till the end of the game (one "baked in" and invisible, increasing his base attack) and increasing his attack even further, bringing him to lev 9 or 10 on fighter... I remembered all of it :) And to see the game can be finished - with knowledge of the story, mechanics and events - in an afternoon, is entertaining... Good memories, the game is a masterpiece - consistent visual style, story, music, gameplay... The middle part, where you had access to many areas - forests, mines, the Tower... and you had to figure out what to do, is really close to today's open world games. But it was tied together with narrative and atmosphere. And I got to experience it during the formative high school years, where you really could dive deep into these games and everything was somehow better :) Oh well, nice trip down the memory lane, after 27 or so years here in 2022.
My favorite game of all time. It's like a perfected version of Eye of the Beholder 2: The Legend of Darkmoon (which is a great game). I was SO disappointed with Lands of Lore 2. As someone said before me, it feels like it belongs to a completely different series.
I know there are several small things in this video that could been optimized. However, this was the first time I actually finished the game and used walkthrough mostly to confirm I found the important secrets. The small stuff shouldn't end up wasting lots of time in the video.
having cleared "eye of the beholder" and "the legend of darkmoon" on the amiga back in the day I was devestated to find that "land of lore wasnt coming to the amiga, i just started playing this recently on the pc, great game and im enjoying it
It may seem awkward, but choosing the feline hero, and having enough patience to upgrade his magic at the beginning would offer an OP character to play with.
In my playthrough I managed to put the Cobra statue into a niche and the niche disappeared. I didn't keep multiple saves and didn't know the cobra was important. Made it to that point where you need to put the statues down to save Richard. Well I lost the game and I am not starting over. Thanks for letting me see the rest :-P
I get the impression you've played this before...a few times. 😏 I actually managed to finish watching the whole thing. Played this myself back in the summer of '94. Thanks for making this.
Oh wow, thank you for uploading this. One of the best, if not *the* best RPGs ever released. A wonderful cornucopia of combat, puzzle-solving, music, and storytelling. Here's to hoping you one day release a likewise video for Lands of Lore II, which is probably the only game I'd place ahead of this one.
If you guys have ever tried to program dos graphics, it's a tedious pixel by pixel process (no graphic editors like photoshop). So you can tell an *enormous* amount of time went in to animating those facial expressions!
This is like the prequel to the elder scrolls oblivion. He was born 57 years ago, for 45 years he has been Gladstones Emperor, but with all these years, he has been the ruler of his own dreams... Wait...what??
Hi, did you ever play "Lands of Lore 3"? While it was a badly-rushed game, it took several elements from this game and put them into newer graphics, such as Gladstone Keep, complete with Victor's old blacksmith shop (run by his daughter, Victoria) and Finch Nathaniel's old shop. Buck the village trader even made an appearance, though in Lower Gladstone and not in the Southland Woods like in this game. Even the Draracle's Maze from this game was imported whole-cloth into "Lands of Lore 3." I wonder if anyone ever told Victoria the Blacksmith what her father actually ended up doing in the first game, though . . . It's too bad this series only got 3 titles out instead of the 8 that were planned. This series deserved better.
Never played LoL3. I've tried LoL2 and played the first two areas, but didn't get excited about it at all. Feels like a completely different game. Maybe I should give LoL3 a chance at some point.
3:37:25 the swole king 3:25 - 6:07 " which featured voice-overs, some of which were performed by Patrick Stewart.[31] ... they had paid $30,000 for him to be with the team for three hours. "
The narration and voice acting in this is sublime. Is that Patrick Stewart doing the narratives or just someone whould pass for his doppelganger? BTW is there a hidden speed/dodge stat that balances out the characters? I'm mainly curious how its distributed across the characters other than the Rogue.
I did that, because it felt the game was moving forward too slowly. I don't know exactly what settings difficulty determines, but it affects combat speed. Maximum difficulty means you get stuck on every monster for a longer time and have to sleep more often to regain mana / health. I thought that would make the video more boring to watch in the long run. Besides this was my first playthrough of this game so I didn't know if I was going to actually finish it.
Such a great game, truly a gem.. Still have it on hard copy but never played it again after I finished it twice, once with Ak'shel and once with Conrad. Now I've seen it again Kieran had horrible stats and I wonder if he would truly be that much harder for enemies to hit him, especially as I read he's the only character not able to wear footwear..
1:15:20 - Any tips on how to find that Ceremonial Mask? I've cleared out the swamps and none of the stickmen dropped it. :/ I tried going back to the forest, fought off a bunch of orcs and came back to the swamp, but the stickmen didn't respawn.
Not sure about that. I remember this game can become impossible to complete as a result of not doing things correctly. Maybe you have an earlier save you could load and try again?
That's the game over screen I added at the end of video after the credits. That part show Scotias undefeatable morph forms that appear if you fail to use 'The Whole Truth'
1:04:00 1st clown with healing magic: "Shouldnt we uh do something?" 2nd clown with healing magic: "Nah." I also really like the character's surprised faces whenever you try to make camp and instantly get disturbed. lol
Yes, I've tried it quickly. Didn't really grab me as much as I'd hoped. Grim 1 & 2 are both a bit too much like Dungeon Master for my taste. I'd like more character interaction oriented game. Props for the effort though.

HOLY SHIT IT'S SIR PATRICK STEWART! He was rocking these games years before Oblivion...

What a delightful game. The graphics, the voice-acting. The pure old-timey cheese of gaming. I love it!

i prefere so far away eye of beholder 2, but i m agree, land of lore is exceptionnel too
Agree. I wasn't good enough to complete the game at the time. Number two going 3d didn't do it for me
+1
absolutely awesome voice acting of Mr Stewart. Just so delighted to hear it :)
Who knew as a kid :D I'm gonna have to save this for the sad day when he's gone
That's Sir Stewart to you.

2:54 These eyebrow movements are the stuff of legends.
I'm always surprised when I hear Patrick Stewart's voice in a videogame! I had no idea he had voiced the king in this game
I like that at the end the monsters appear one by one, like actors appearing for a role call at the end of a play.
Masterpiece of a game.
Would make an excellent movie.
The look and controls reminds me of Bloodwych - love these old school games, so much fun playing these back in the day 😄 thanks for uploading!
it looks so good! Even today. Unbelievable but this is some timeless graphics
Yes, I remember this jolly old adventure! There was indeed a lot of sleeping along the way! But we had so much fun when we were not sleeping!(:
such a good game i'm glad I was born early enough to experience it

The true successor to Eye of the Beholder 2.
This game SCREAMS remake! This and Betrayal At Krondor! I honestly think I'd go insane! The artwork and voice acting are astonishing!

HOW DID I NEVER HEARD OF THIS GAME BEFORE??
This was an Amazin' adventure!
i'm Amazed!~✨
Quite a good game for 1993.
always blows my mind to see how much care and attention and craft went into games back then. now it's become a formulaic slop generator.

I remember a friend of mine giving me his copy of this on a 3.5 and playing it on a windows 3.1 machine with only pc speaker sound.
This game also reminds me of Ravenloft, Menzoberranzan...good times!
2:02:55 Haha, this got to be a reference too the Cheers show!
Why did you leave all the oil flasks outside before entering the smith?
Just small inventory arrangement that could've been cut from the video.
Lol, I just made a similar comment before seeing yours. That has to be Norm.

It's Patrick Stewart alright according to IMBD. Amazing performance of his as usual.
Thanks for posting the video, brings back a lot of memories! Keep it up.
I only saw the demo without voices and.... My! Patrick Stewart cougt me by surprise :D Now i want to play it.
Dang, looked sick. I missed out on this one.
Such a well made game, Loved the voice acting and story the most. Sadly the latter is what is missing in a lot of today's games :(
I't doesn't make sense..... The story suck.
LOL 2 was pretty good. I don't know why ppl are bashing it so much. It's hugely immersive and has insane production value.
I liked 2 too. Only not the bugs:P 3 was ok too. But lol 1 stays my favo.
Why did you change difficulty at 34:40? I didn't watch every bit of the video, but did you change it later back to ferocious?
I did that, because it felt the game was moving forward too slowly. I don't know exactly what settings difficulty determines, but it affects combat speed. My god the pixel art animations are out of this world!!!
@Ryan Smith 13 x 1.44MB = 18.72MB!! My god I can't believe we used to use a storage medium that could only support up to 1.44MB!!! hahahahaha
@Ryan Smith Yeah man, but take with you today's tech! hahaha

wow they really even slapped patrick stewart's voice on the opening sequence xD

This interface and westwood adventure really reminds me something but intro doesn't. Were there similar games to this one?
Dungeon Master, Eye of The Beholder and many more.
It could be nice with a remake
Really good voice acting. I'm amazed by it, most games at this time that had it it was atrocious
What?! That's Patrick Stewart!! Awesome!!
lol that ending - You have been defeated..
That's the game over screen I added at the end of video after the credits. That part show Scotias undefeatable morph forms that appear if you fail to use 'The Whole Truth'
I'd rather use 'The Whole Truth' then..
very dune 2-like music. Frank Klepacki almost copy pasted the music from his dune 2 1992 score to this 1993 game.
+redmanticore
Search RUclips for MIDI game music, they pretty much all sound alike.
Man...this statement is just wrong. :D
Do you even music?
More like Kyrandia
can anyone tell me how you know IN GAME the ruby help to defeat scotia?
Damn this looks like Might and magic, some of the sound effects are even the same...
Yea but this has Patrick Stewart voice acting LMAO...
Idk what this is, but I'm super into it.
