I was very fortunate to see a one-day game in Auckland and watch Botham star for England and Richard Hadlee for New Zealand. Two of the very best all-rounders in great form.

Beautiful powerful clean hitter I would've loved to have seen him with a modern day bat absolute carnage. As a bowler he swung it round corners and could be very sharp on his day from 1984-86 he was at his quickest then his body fell apart then became a useful medium pacer and concentrated more on his batting He will always be my hero

Problem with Ian Botham is that he played 102 tests and the first half (the first 51) he averaged around 40 with the bat, scored 11 centuries and took over 200 wickets at around 25 runs. The second half of his career (the second 51 tests) he only scored 3 centuries at an average of under 30, and took 150 wickets at well over 35. So he was very much a player of two halves who for the second half of his test career very much played on his image rather than his ability at that stage of his playing career.

Same as Tendulkar. He should have been dropped post 2005. Never scored much. Just retained on name value

Imran was a successful captain and leader of his men, developed a few worthy proteges in wasim and waqar, got wickets even on dust bowls in pak and india and almost beat viv's team in the WI, thats the only reason he's considered the better alrounder. Ian Botham wouldve been the best alrounder of the quartet simply coz he scored runs everywhere from the start and bowled decently in india too, but his impact in games in aus and england was the difference in the ashes. so, he's just a step behind IK.

Botham was awesome! Australia has been looking for the all rounder and never found it, may be 2 a batter and catcher but never a bowler and batter! Best we could say was Neil Harvey or Shane Watson but nothing like Botham, or Kapil Dev or Imran Khan though those players were never as good as Botham - funny how a period of time there were those greats - Botham, Dev and Khan - you could possibly add Hadlee (he was great too but more bowler than batsman) only these days the only I can say as a true all rounder is Jacques Kallis (he was 1st drop with excellent figures, bowler with handy ability and slips fielder!).

Great all rounder h3 surely was BUT the number's say the greatest was JAQUES KALLIS.
now if he was a pom it would be SIR Jacques kallis i mean if a south African bloke who played for the poms one of many who hasn't achieved Kallis's numbers is called SIR strauss Then Jaques must be SIR SIR SIR Jacques Kallis.

I understand your argument but of course the 'greatest' isnt just about the stats, if you ask anybody who was the greatest..Ian Botham or Jaques Kallis you just know the biggest percentage will of course say Ian, its about the bigger picture and perception. Its a bit like asking who is the greatest...The Rolling Stones or Led Zepplin ?...record sales wouldnt give you the whole answer.
