I ALMOST feel bad for the guy. He's brought undue attention to the world of the Japanese business elite. That can't be a good thing.
He is not Japanese. That's one of the reasons they were so hard on him. They treat foreigners 1000X worse in their justice system if you can call it that. He also saved Nissan from total bankruptcy at a time when GM was getting billions in bail outs. They also put him in solitaire confinement for months without council or due process. In short, the Japanese execs at Nissan and the government did not want the merger with Renault which is owned by the french government. All this shit will come out now. They keep him in strict gag order. Could not even talk with his wife. But next week the Japanese will get a hell lashing from Ghosn. We will finally hear the other side of this story. And it will be brutal. Their justice system is going to get a hellish amount backlash. Its going to get ugly. I mean really ugly.

Actually, he is doing allot of CYA right here. Distancing himself as much as he can. He knows the justice system in Japan is corrupt. And he does not want to be implemented or tied in any way to the escape. Because if they think he knew anything about it he will be rotting in a cell for all eternity. So yeah, in this case he will favor the prosecution side and say anything to keep his ass safe lol. However he did say in another interview that his client may have fled because he felt he could not get a fair trial. Which is true. And I'm surprised he said even that.
