- What does it take to be an MMA fighter?
A lot of young guys dream about becoming an MMA fighters and UFC champions. While it is good to strive towards greatness, the truth is that a very small percentage of people will ever make it to the top of any endeavor, and especially MMA. I discussed that in this video.

1. Courage (madness)
Being brave is a must and I don't mean not being afraid. Courage is not the absence of fear. It is action in spite of fear. Some people will also say that you need to be crazy a little bit to walk into the octagon where you will be punched, kicked and have your limbs stretched. That is correct and it takes a special person to do that.
2. Skill
MMA is a very skill-intensive sport and you need to cultivate a wide variety of techniques in order to be successful. You will, of course, specialize in some areas, but unlike other combat sports where you have to learn less, in MMA you need to know a lot of moves in order to be prepared for what awaits in the octagon.
3. Discipline & sacrifice
MMA is not like a sprint but more like long distance running. That means that you need to be in it for the long run and the results will not come overnight but after years of diligent practice.
That takes discipline and self-sacrifice.
While your friends are out drinking and partying, you have to go to bed early so you would be ready for tomorrow's training. While they are eating junk you should eat healthy. An ex UFC fighter Sean Sherk once said that he doesn't eat for taste but for performance. That's exactly the mindset you need to have.
While there are fighters that party occasionally or more than occasionally, drink or even do drugs, and get away with it, you are much better off without that crap. Diets of MMA fighters are not so strict as the diets of bodybuilders, but they still have to watch what they eat and that will make a huge difference.
All of this takes discipline and self-sacrifice.
4. Brutal weight cuts
And since we're mentioning discipline, you are definitely going to need it for weight cuts that sometimes get brutal in MMA. Most fighters say that it is the hardest part of MMA, and for a good reason. Weight cutting has been a problem for quite some time, and there are steps taken to come up with a solution, but for the time being it is still going to be extremely hard for fighters that choose to cut a lot of weight.
5. Injuries
Injuries, both minor and major, are a part of every fighter's career. It is very difficult being on the sidelines without the ability to compete or train. Or training with injuries. Still, it is what every fighter goes through and it's a part of this job. Are you willing to spend months or even years like me doing rehab? Can you endure surgeries, cuts, bone fractures, herniated discs, ligament tears and more? Professional MMA is very hard on the body and you need to be prepared for that if you're going to make this your calling.
6. Self-reflection and honesty
MMA exposes one to his own inadequacies quite quickly. In sparring, you get that feedback instantly. So in order to improve, you need to be very honest with yourself and be able to see your own flaws. This doesn't just apply to technical and physical flaws, but also to mental ones. This requires self-reflection which is not easy.

I'm 50 now...I train in the gym for lean muscle body(Transporter physique type).
But...I'm also interested in MMA,probably not for competition but for functionality, flexibility, speed, conditioning and of course....self defense.

I’m 29 years old and only have a wrestling background but always had respect for the sport. I stay pretty fit but past injuries haunt me, I need a coach to teach me the preparation.
Good preparation and smart training will decrease the chance of injury, but not eliminate it. And some people are more prone to injuries than others.

Some people who wants to do this watch it on TV and think hey I can do that and then get in the gym and fold quit the following week I feel you have to have a reason to fight if you don't then it's not going to work out when you get knocked out or break a bone
Coach: u cant eat whatever u like

Great
Honestly my fear is only that , what if I get a wrong coach!!?
I figured out over the years that its the research and practice at home that makes a big difference. Gym is for practicing the tools you learn as well as getting some guidance.

Imma do mma next month or march. I’m 29 years old though and it’s a little discouraging knowing how old I am and most greater fighters are younger than me. I always wanted to learn martial arts as a kid and I worked out very hard for about 4 to 5 years until I got with my ex and I started to not workout anymore and I didn’t have the money at the time to pay for classes. I love fighting in anything whether it’s movies, video games, or books. Though I mostly was into fantasy martial arts and kung fu movies I grew up on because of my dad. But I never really touched up mma. But now I’m really into it and hardly know anything about it when it comes to the ground game and submissions. I only been in two fights in my school years. I won one and I lost one. I been knocked out before because the person I fought wrapped a beaded jump rope around their hand and sucker punched the hell out of me and my ears were ringing while I saw the person come up to me to hit me again. That was six grade though and the person I fought was 18 and a predator. I stood up for my self and fought them. But yeah I always had the desire to do martial arts it just died after I got with my ex but now I’m with the women of my dreams and I’m much happier now and have that desire to finally do it. Imma work really hard as I can to try and make it into being a professional mma fighter.

So I'm an aspiring fighter and a good musician . My question is is it possible for me to establish myself in both the fields at the same time ?
Everything is possible, but I think what you aim for is difficult. There are UFC fighters that have regular jobs, like Stipe Miocic being a fire fighter, so I guess it's doable.
Problem with music is the late night shows when you should be sleeping and recovering from training, although that is on hold because of Corona.
You can try it for some time and see how it works out for you. If it doesn't, you will have to choose.

I need you to reply to this please most of the time I forget about fear and let my anger out how could you control it into something positive also I feel no pain most of the time and us that a good skill to have and for a coach my uncle was one for the UFC can his teaching help? Please reply I need your answer to this thank you
I don't your uncle so I cannot tell if he can be of help, but if he fought in the UFC he probably can.
As Master Yoda says: "Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.” :)
There is a lot of truth to this saying and fighting with anger is no good. It can lead to victory, but a more advanced opponent can use it against you.
When you're angry you're not fighting to the best of your abilities, you're not reacting properly and your sole purpose is to destroy your opponent instead of solving the puzzle (the opponent) by following the tactics you have set out for yourself.
So resist the dark side. ;)

If I train like Kobe with the Mamba mentality starting at 25 do you think there's a chance to be a top tier fighter by 30
Don’t train like kobe. Train better, smarter, harder. Know you’ll get there. Don’t ask. The toughest part is building the habit. I hope you’ve started and it’s going well! Good luck, I doubt you’ll need it. Go kick some ass.
I am 22 years old and i know nothing about mma. Can i make it to top if i start at this age.??
@Louie Og tysm brother! ♥️
I am a 14 year old boxer and Dallas Texas but i am just a beginner. I’m having a hard time training and i am struggling with self confidence but i love the sport of MMA and i wish to go pro. I need help with training and how to gain mental toughness.
Perhaps it would be best to find a therapist and determine if there is something non-training related that's holding you back. If not, know that all of us doubted ourselves sometimes and that it's normal.
Mental toughness takes time, training and considerable effort. If you can manage that, you will gain self-confidence.
I can’t say this more join wrestling, join wrestling, join wrestling, join wrestling, and again JOIN WRESTLING. It’ll improve your mental toughness. My coach said “it easy, if it were easy everybody would be doing it.”
What does it take to become a coach?
Kyree Jones MMA experience. Just my opinion but my coaches have or are currently walking the walk
Tough question. I could say that competitive experience is important for a coach, but that would not be completely true as there are awesome coaches with zero MMA experience as fighters. Greg Jackson is just one of them.
Perhaps more important than competitive experience is a true love and a keen interest in the sport of MMA. It is also imperative to be good with people.
Honestly just a passion for the sport man, if you have some competitive background it would be a big help but again when god has an anointing on your life cuz, with hard work and faith you can grow a rose from the concrete you never know till u give it a crack

Lol
The question is do you really
I’m 17 and I wanna start do you think I can ever become pro or am I to old?
I am 29 years old and I started 6 months ago .you are at the right age
Perfect age I am 16 and I am planning to get into it you really start learning quickly when your at age of near full development because when your young and tskenheavy blows when your brain isnt fully developed yet it can actually stunt your development and stuff even injuries when your a kid could stunt things such as growth so 17 is a very good age to start even some people who train from a young age start losing interest and so on due to the heavy punshimjet at an young age
How much does an average training cost
Agent 69 typically between 80-200 dollars a month. 80 would be just jits or just striking at a smaller gym. 200 would be jits, striking, anything else they can offer, at bigger academy’s like Gracie’s or ones that have already produced top tier fighters.
I’m 19 and kinda feel like I’m too late
Male mma fighters cut an average of 30 lbs for weight making
What if I want to compete in multiple events like a local boxing match, a local mma match, a local muay thai match..
Have you started training and sparring? Have you competed at all?
It’s possible. Check out Ramsey Dewey’s career. He’s competed in Muay Thai, MMA, Sanda, Jiu Jitsu, Taekwondo, American Kickboxing.
