Lexus RC 300h 2016 review | TELEGRAPH CARS

- The Lexus RC is a two-door coupe designed to rival the BMW 4-series and Audi A5, but uses hybrid power where others opt for diesel. That means low running costs for company car drivers, as well as great ride comfort. But, as Rebecca Jackson explains, the RC isn't the most exciting car to drive.

that middle console brings back the sweet memory of my '96 Volvo.
I love the fact that bananas are slowly becoming a credible unit of measurement
Nice. I have an IS300h and love it. This looks to be the same car with a sportier look. Glad to hear you not banging on about the hybrid drone that all journalists focus on. In real life it is barely noticeable. It is only really audible when you are nailing the throttle and on UK roads now that is not easy to get away with.
+GaryGSF
Most people who harp on about Hybrids sounding funny really should be aiming for a Porsche if Performance and sound is what they desire.
The fact they mention BMW makes me laugh some times.
Me too. My IS300h is a dream come true. So lovely to drive. I note the video had to sneak in the obligatory reference to BMW (put another record on, purleeeeease!). I've driven a couple of 3-series lately and admit, they are not terrible by any stretch - but I think the IS300h looks and feels just that bit better and 'special' in several areas - I do prefer the BMW's cruise controls being built into the steering wheel rather than the Lexus's extra stick behind theirs and agree with the video that the Lexus could do with a few more storage spaces. My biggest surprise with the 3-series Beemers is that they felt like they wanted to wander around *a little* more on the road than I was led to believe they would. My Lexus seems just that bit more content to go EXACTLY where I point it.I am very surprised by the comment in the video about only running the RC 300h for about 100 metres on electric. As you note, it is clearly almost the same drivetrain as we're enjoying with our IS models and I have certainly managed best part of a mile, on many occasions, which is plenty to get out of the housing estate and on to open road (or vice-versa) in my case.My last tank of petrol got me 50.1mpg ("for real" as measured via fuelly.com - as with probably all cars, the dash meter is a little over generous, typically claiming 3 or 4 mpg more). However, today, in warmer weather, the dash showed a whopping 58.7 when I parked it in my garage!
Someone finally put a ring on it! The dream is over guys.
+Cgmw Yea don't look at my bride, bro.
+Cgmw You talking about ma waifu?
+Cgmw You're lieing!!! That ring doesn't mean a thing. As a racing driver she has no time for relationships.
+Cgmw Speaking as a female. I think it's sweet how all of you guys just love Rebecca. I giggle when I read all the comments and most are not perverted or raunchy. It's a breath of fresh air to read such respectful comments. :)
Lipsmacker6 How kind of you, this gives me hope. Thank you miss. It's also refreshing to read comments from cool and tolerant women like you who aren't like those bitchy or prude masandrist/überfeminists.
Bless you and your openminded sense of humor! I respect ladies for years as long as they respect us males! :}
Beautiful car. Love the interior. Great buy and great value. I would get the Fsport Hybrid
Something I notice.... Some reviewers like her are QUICK to say it doesn't feel light on its feet like a bimmer... but they ARENT quick to say this Lexus its more comfortable more refined better riding them the bimmer. BIAS. Quick to say what the bimmer is better at but wont say out right what Lexus does better then bimmer... typical reviewer crap. You wont see her saying in a BMW review that its no Lexus and doesnt ride good as a Lexus but they will say in a Lexus review it doesn't handle like a bimmer? Give ma break. She already said it has good handling and good pedal feeling with nice grip. But yet she still feels the need to bring up BMW
Since the RC can't really be as sporty as it's rivals, might as well et it as a grand tourer and get this. That color is gorgeous
This would be a brilliant and reliable daily driver / commuter car. Besides, it will be reliable unlike BMW 4 Series.
+Ishten Yobahtop You talk out of your behind.
This thing will be recalled any time soon.
Underneath it's still a Toyota. A car for boring nerds.
"Lexus... Lexus... Lexus... (yawn)... Oh look, a BMW!", Said no-one, ever.
is this available in north america?
Good looking, but the middle console of the dash looks a bit too much like a 1995s hifistereoset...
Now that's one magnificent piece of art.... The car is ok.
toss up between this and the new infiniti q60 coupe as my next used buy next year
What did you buy?…
But the F sport have a cooler instrument cluster : D
no way!! Rebecca is fantastic.
Wot, no Baby Buggy? Nice Coupe, similar looks to the lexus LFA
Can you plz review the new x1!!!
CVT, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Genuine question: it has a cvt sooo... why does it have paddles on the steering wheel?
For luxury coupe lovers, it seems this would be a good choice as a daily driver.
4:15 That hurts my eyes
You buy a Lexus because it's reliable. Until the Germans begging to pay attention to reliability by removing all that plastic from the engines they will never be able to compete with the low maintenance cost of owning a Lexus. I should know because my last car was a BMW 7 series. Never a gain!
theme song?
Banana confirmed
The only car review I've seen that involves a banana also involves an extremely good looking woman...
+Brennan Wallman Bananas are healthy so that is no surprise.
I wish we got this in the USA :(
Excitement with the Audi and BMW is a bit overrated from the car reviewers. In first place nobody buys Hybrid for lap times or sideways. Koenigsegg Regera and Porsche 918 are exceptions. People who buy 2 door GT,including me care about looks, comfort, reliability, exclusivity and resale prize. Lexus tops the Germans easily on all points, hands down. On the other hand,if you are a badge snob ( Though in my opinion Lexus is more reputable brand than BMW and Audi ) ,you are on the market for a track car,and the options are RS5,M4 and RC-F,then the M4 is the one to go. Fun factor is there. Speed factor is there. And that would be all you care.
Was hoping to see the boot space.. Oh well
+Ulrond Oops! Must hv missed it! Thanks mate
How dumb do you have to be to buy this over a 4-series, C-class coupe or even outdated A5 coupe? And yeah, 43mpg for 220hp isn't that great... You can get similar or better economy from a 220hp mk7 VW Golf GTI, which isn't a hybrid (and is also faster, more fun to drive, more practical and cheaper - but that's not the point). Anyways, for a comfortable coupe you can get a C-class, which is way better.
P.S. Thanks for the review, telegraph cars. Rebecca is a great car journalist btw!
+Dmitry L like Rebecca said, fleet sales. Let's not forget things like taxation too. In corporate terms, every little bit adds up.
+Tedrick Leong she also said that Lexus aims at younger generations with this car... However, almost 9 second 0-60 time and CVT gearbox as well as bad chassis settings are not going to help. With fleet cars: firstly, it's unlikely that companies are going to buy this sort of car in the first place. Secondly, as I said, you can get a C-class with better fuel economy and similar tax group, mercedes has great reliability too, so it's not going to cost much to run. So it's not surprising that there aren't many of these cars on the road. Toyota really need to invest into developing new power units and lighter platforms.
+Dmitry L because it isn't any of the above cars.... I tried the saloon equivalents and bought an IS. The spec is fantastic, no pages and pages of options... as a company car driver i save shed loads of tax and it's a genuinely enjoyable car to drive, particularly comfortable, fantastic stereo.... I've also only seen a handful on the road, get let out of junctions and people genuinely like my car - comments unfamiliar to the others you mention.
+Scott McKenzie IS is a little but different. Although, I wouldn't buy one myself, I definitely agree that this car has it's own advantages. For example, as you said, it has a fantastic stereo - Lexus seem to make audio systems better than Germans. Also, I really like the suspension in the IS: it's really soft. However, objectively this specific car (RC) loses to its competitors in many other aspects, particularly in terms of their engines: the choice is very poor and they don't seem to perform well both in terms of power (even if there is enough of pure power: the old gearboxes ruin the delivery) and real-world economy.
+Dmitry L I guess this is why there is a choice for everyone. I have colleagues with 320d's, C220's and they're getting around 40mpg out of them, i get high 48's without even trying in my IS... I'm not sure where you're based but in the UK Petrol is usually cheaper, servicing is cheaper on petrol cars and taxes are lower on petrol cars too (thank you VW)... so it makes a lot of sense and ticks a lot of boxes. The engine choice is simple, there are 2 of them... for me that's another plus, much like the trim levels and options, they're simple. If i could get away with a coupe next I would and i'd get an RC over all the others you mention, but I can't... you mention elsewhere about the GTE too, a colleague has just ordered one of those, it was £3000 MORE than my IS300h F-Sport.... just shy of £40k for a Golf - that doesn't have the letter R anywhere in it! It's madness.
Why do you need a banana in a car Becca???
Just awesome (not be said 'bout this lexus)
So beautiful... Cars not bad to
Bananas are back!
Lexus' dashboard design team are stuck in a time loop
A RING?! Gahhhhhh!!! When did that happen?! Sigh, the dream is over.
That half-inch continues to be important it seems....
سيارة رائعه ومميزه،لكزس وبس.
the banana thing again! ahhah
Again, Lexus designers need a slap. And get a 6-cylinder in there.
I love you Rebecca
The interior looks like its from 2005.
I agree, looks so bland
+| Zodrigon | I see that as a compliment!! Interiors back then looked great!
Firemarioflower Yeah, I know, I loved BMW's 2005 interiors. but In 2016 cars should have evolved into something more modern and I don't think that lexus did it with its interior.
| Zodrigon | then it has to be modern in a classy way because the current German models aren't sophisticated either. pretty crazy laid out, screens not integrated and everything looks cluttered. The ventilations arent neat but curves going all directions.
I think Lexus isnt half bad in that way. Old fashioned but elegant.
Too me it seems that everything inside of new modern cars has become like the French and Japanese do it. Unorganized and unlogically.
so does every bmws
you are so cute.. Anyway great review. Definitely the car to buy.
Bela Rebecca.
She realy loves her bananas :)
Looks like an old BMW from the back
Top half of centre console looks bloody awful :o rest of it don't mind though
This car is grim, it looks shocking plus I think I've seen that interior in a history book. I genuinely wonder how these cars sell.
+DevasionX I'm guessing you own a Lexus....... It's just my opinion as you said however most watchers/readers share my opinion as you can see from the comments. Personally I believe the car was outdated from day one compared to the new c-class coupe, A5, Jaguar XE and 4 series in exterior looks, interior and performance.
Nick Hughes the new c-class is hidious compared to the W204, bmw 4 series looks generic to all other bmw models, if you think the RC looks outdated, so much look the aventador outdated.
+DevasionX hmmmm I would agree with you to a point on the new c class, the old one was much more aggressive looking but the old Merc interior was shocking. You could argue that every brand does but the 4 series is a mean looking machine and you can tell it apart easily. Completely different car, I would say an SLR would look at home if you launched it tomorrow aside from the interior. The aventador is up to date less the signal clutch box.
Nick Hughes The RC doesnt look like the IS, yet the 4 series is literlary the 3 series coupe. And thanks finaly understands that the new mercedes lost the "german muscle" status after the new c class.... only the interior needed some refreshing.
+DevasionX kinda looks the same just in a coupe.
8.6 seconds to 60mph!! That's awful, no thank you.
+sonofjak1971 it is hybrid, check the RC F.
+sonofjak1971 And that time is with driver only, imagine, full load.
+Habitashi there are hybrids which are cheaper than this and are also faster and more economical, for example Golf GTE. And for the price of RC F you can almost get an M4, which is way faster and just generally better.
+Dmitry L yes you can find a cheaper, but more luxury? no.
also the RC F is much cheaper than the M4, Lexus has its own path, and you already know how much you would pay for the M4 each year for maintenance
+Habitashi Well it doesn't belong in a coup
what was this video about? I was looking at the sexy lady the whole time so I missed it..tried rewatching - same results
I'm here for banana only
yet another Lexus "sports car" that isn't all that sporty. But costs what a powerful sports car costs.
Whatever happened to the British car industry?
Mazen
Thirty what thousand pounds?!
I've always laughed on those electric seat that luxury coupe have... it is damn funny to watch their dumb lazy owners put it forward and wait 5 minutes the electric motors to move the seat before someone get in the back or just put some luggage - real joy :)
God bless good old manually folding seat and the owners who are not afraid for their expensive pedicure :D :D :D
Buy the IS300h instead - cheaper, looks much better, 4 doors and more room in the back
Looks much better😂😂😂
pretty good???? my assss!
Looks awful. Doesn't Handle well. Plus the interior is just so low rent compared to a 4 series or C Class Coupe. How can anyone recommend this car??
+peacegod101 I don't know. Refinement in a C-class is good too. I don't see why to get an unreliable Japanese car instead.
+peacegod101
I have driven them and they handle beautifully for a 35K car. It is not a super light weight sports care.
When talking about the 4 series and C class were you really talking about a Porsche.
Where on the market place for 35k would you get a well handling, super reliable with understated interior.
You most certainly cannot be talking about a 35k BMW or Mercedes.
Did you just say japanese cars are unreliable and would rather drive the piece of shit mercedes that loses its value after 4 years of use?
DevasionX I don't like the Mercedes design. I'd go for Audi. at least they can be told apart.
Firemarioflower I dont know where you base that "unreliability" on, wont beat GM tho.. I think you get confused by the US spec toyota's, Euro spec and JDM toyotas have little to no recalls.
Those LED day time running lights make the car looks like it has bags under it's eyes.
Lexus makes the ugliest interiors
+Guillermo D Agreed. And the exterior's pretty ugly as well.
+Guillermo D Agreed, so plain and plasticky looking. It already looks like it came from the 80s.
+Guillermo D
Exteriors too.Rx450, all i'm saying...
شارع 18 , حى الزهور, P.O. Box 20643, الدمام, المملكة العربية السعودية
It's hideous. And the gear shifter is out of the 90's.
And it also controls a CVT gearbox from 90s :(
+Del Johnson
But it will last unlike a lot of other brands that would nearly cost twice as much.
+Dmitry L How do you know that the CVT is from the 90's genious?
+Dmitry L that works much better than most automatic gearbox
I wonder if the husband to be will take her last name?
0-60 8.6 eeewww🤢🤢,, and a cvt?? barfff
Why would you do a review on a rainy day ? it all look grumpy and bit of turn off to watch.
🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌
With the RC you need to think toilet. Because that is where the plans for this car should have been flushed before production. It is awful looking.
Nice try Lexus but its a fail
LOL plus the horrible car interior you have a horse wearing a coat in the background.
A CVT is the WORST choice for a sporty coupe. It only belongs in a crappy Prius. That's why the Suzuki Kazashi sold only moderatly. It's gearbox was shit while the rest was perfect.
Anyway, this car shouldn't rely on tax advantages as it's a car for richer persons, PLUS it's blasphemy and stupid. Eco-fascism really ruined the market.
Rebecca, whY? you are a racing driver yoruself!! so a hybrid is better? Low running costs? Please, for tht you need a German car. Forget it. A GT car should also be sporty. What's the point?
Why only comfort, you should get a GS for that. The looks, perhaps?? i dont find it worth the price.
what's up with this woman's voice?
bmws all the way sorry..
Gimmick?
And the handling isn't very good i hear. So a useless model.
the worst color for it
Is that a Lexus or a bar of soap?
Those interior plastics look cheap as hell. The steering wheel is also from a 90ies Honda. No thanks.
CVT automatic gearbox...2.20 min finished my video. no thanks
Mazen
