    I feel about the 40mm F2 as you do the 35mm 1.8 S. For whatever reason, 35mm has always frustrated me. Never long or wide enough. The 24mm, 40mm and 85mm are my prime carry set. Great video, well presented.

    Wholeheartedly agree, although I'd say the 50mm is also a great one. I often have an internal battle whether to whether to use 35 or 50 1.8s when i know I won't be changing lenses for a while. The main thing I like about the 50 is that I feel more confident about distortion in portraits where the face takes up a lot of the frame.

    Love the Z Nikkors. I gravitate towards 50mm, a bit harder to use than a 35mm but more magical when you nail it I think. Both the 35/1.8S and 50/1.8S are fantastic. They’re all great haha

    Man I had such a hard time choosing between this and the 50 1.8 S - Both are amazing of course. I went with the 50mm because of the price but I kinda wished I just got the 35 instead haha. But having said, the 50 1.8 S is by far the best 50mm lens I have ever used.

What you've said makes sense, no histrionics, and a straight forward tell-it-as-it-is approach (I do have a Z7 II, do not have any of the Z mount native lenses...yet) so I'm prepared to come back again to see/hear what you have to say, mark me down as subscriber number 74.

    I primarily shoot macro. I had a D7200 with the laowa 100mm macro, 35mm 1.8g dx, and 300mm f4D Af-s. I traded it in yesterday and got a z5 and the 50mm. I couldn’t afford the 35mm. The new z lenses seem pretty incredible. I can’t wait to get my hands on the new 105mm z macro.

    I understand what you mean regarding Sigma. I did the same with all of mine. I traded in the 20, 35 and 50 f1.4 arts for the Z series lenses. My camera bag is so light in comparison. I also traded in the Tamron 15-30 brick and purchased the 14-30s. Hiking has been so much more enjoyable since

    I don't shoot Nikon, but I do agree with you that the 35mm focal length is very versatile. It's frustratingly versatile, really. I love the neutrality of the 50mm focal length for composition, but the 35mm is just way more practical.

    The answer to your question is Nikon/Nikkor S-line lenses everything else is les good - lower quality, worse performance with z-mount bodies, particularly the Z9. The 70-200/2.8, 24-70/2.8 and 14-24/2.8 are extra ordinary and much improved on the best f-mount version. I tried the Z 400/2.8 TC VR S-line lens earlier this week and it is a huge improvement on my f-mount E-FL version. As to other “shorter” primes the 105/2.8 MC is wonderful. I am waiting to see and test the Z f/1.2 releases before I consider replacing the af-s f/1.4 version I have owned for years

    Hi Darrin! I'd really like to ask for your insight here. I'm fortunate enough to own a Z6ii with a Z70-200. I'm looking for a lightweight lens to add to my kit. It will be used for a combo of portraits/street/general photography. Would you recommend that I go with the z35 or z50mm? The 35mm is much wider than my 70-200 so it gives me more future proof options for shoots, and the 50mm is 1/3 cheaper than the 35mm. If you were in my shoes, which would you go for? Thanks!

    • @DarrinRigo
      @DarrinRigo  3 года назад +1

      Hey there!
      If it were me, I'd go for the 35mm over the 50mm if you already have the 70-200mm! The 35mm is just so damn versatile - even since making this back in January, I've added the 14-30mm f/4, the 24-70mm 2.8S, and the 20mm 1.8S, and I still grab my 35mm 1.8S over all those for most gigs.
      The main thing I'm thinking is that the 50 and 70 are close enough that for pretty much anything you'd want the 50 for, you could get away with using the 70. I think having the 35mm in your bag is so much wide than the 70 that it'll totally change up your shooting style.
      The only other consideration you said is price - the 35mm is steeper but I do promise it's worth it.

      The 50 is one of the best lenses I have ever used, sadly I don't use it as much as I should because I tend to just reach for the 24-70 f4 due to practicality most of the time.

    • @DarrinRigo
      @DarrinRigo  3 года назад +1

      I haven't shot the kit lens personally, but I know it's an F/4 aperture which means it would be a LOT less useable in low light conditions. The F/1.8 on the 35mm will change your life when it comes to shooting in lower lighting conditions. The bokeh will also look a lot more blurred/professional on a F/1.8!
