    I miss that man!
I got to meet Mr Johnny Thorp through his stepson Donnie, while I lived in Needles California back in 1985- 1987 in October of 87 I ended up moving to Herrin, IL in Southern Illinois,. But when I lived in Needles around 1985--86 is when I first met Johnny. I was just a 15 or16 year old kid His Stepson Donnie and I would hang out, play guitar and drums together. My mother, stepfather, sister & I would all go over to Johnny & Pattys house for supper. Or a barbecue. I love sitting there listening to Johnny's stories. He had a way of telling stories that were better than watching movies! He told really interesting stories about looking for Treasures, finding Treasures, Trappin & spending many nights out under the moonlight! I mean who wouldn't want to do that in their lifetime? He brought out some of his treasures and showed us that he wasn't just blowing smoke up are ass, lol He really was telling the truth!
He made spending an evening with him like you were going on an adventure of a lifetime! And in a sense you really were because he could tell you such good stories about his life!
I finally left Needles, Ca. & ended up moving here to Southern Illinois, in Oct.1987. After living here for around five years. I got a job as a cabinet maker in a woodshop. there was some guys I worked with that were hunters. They started talking about hunting trapping. I guess this would have been around 1991-92 ( I was either 21 or 22 yrs old at the time. & I told them " I know of a Trapper but he does live around here, he lives out in Needles California. His name is Johnny Thorp." They all looked at each other then look at me like they were angry and said " you don't know how Johnny Thorp!" I told them what do you mean I don't know Johnny Thorp? He's a friend of mine & he lives out in Needles California, look it up if you need to! They all said shaking their heads" you don't know Johnny Thorp I don't know who you think you know, but it's not Johnny Thorp! He is one of the top three Trappers in the United States!
He is in magazines & has several videos teaching people how to trap. He also has several patents on traps!"
I told them" that sounds exactly like my friend Johnny Thorp only, I had no idea he was famous, he never bragged about being famous or about being known all around the world!" That was the end of that I guess they never believe me?
But That's what made Johnny such a likable guy. He was a down-to-earth man that did not brag about himself he only talked about the things he had done in life, the things he had a passion for and the things he came across his path in life. The things he thought was important or very interesting! And I found the same things interesting like most people that listen to him would.
I called him a few times after I found out he moved to New York. Right before he passed away He sent me his book and autographed it "to Ronnie By Johnny Thorp with his paw mark " 50 years a Trapper and treasure hunter.
I never dreamed I would ever meet a man like him and get to spend a couple of years talking with him and his stepson. I will never meet another Johnny Thorp, even if I lived another five lifetimes!
