- Filmmaker Paul Verhoeven returned to the Netherlands after more than twenty years of success in Hollywood to direct this epic-scale war drama based on a true story. Rachel Steinn (Carice van Houten) is a beautiful Jewish woman living in Holland during the early days of World War II.
When Axis forces take control of Holland, Rachel's family are killed in a bombing raid while most of the city's Jews are rounded up and sent to Nazi death camps. Rachel manages to narrowly avoid capture, and joins the local resistance movement. With her hair dyed blonde, Rachel can easily pass for a gentile, and when the leader of the Dutch resistance movement learns his son has been captured by Axis forces, Rachel is asked to use her feminine charms to persuade a German commander to arrange for the boy's release. Rachel soon finds herself caught up in a dangerous double life as she becomes a sexual plaything for the Nazis while attempting to bring down their evil empire as a spy.

This movie was a masterpiece good enough to get an oscar. It’s sad that it didn’t get enough recognition :(.

Indeed masterpiece. Best of Verhoeven, better than Robocop. Seen it at least 6 times, gripping every time. Great script, big budget, masterful acting by every single actor, especially Carice van Houten. I suspect it's because of authentic languages and subtitles. Americans want just movies where everyone speaks English, with a fake accent. Even if they are a German SD officer or Dutch spy. In my country it's nothing special, because all Hollywood movies are subtitled. In my Top 10 movies of all time.

I just found this as I get special notifications for under the rader films that are pre-2010 The trailer looks great & of course, I will watch it. it was released at a time when i was NOT watching many films.

This movie was brilliant. I love war movies, the era is extremely fascinating to me, sad and heartbreaking but fascinating ! The amount of people from that time that would have a story to tell! This movie kept you glued from beginning to end, it was realistic, but well done. The actress did an incredible job. Iv seen this movie a few times and each time is as good as the first highly recommend!

This is an amazing movie that will hold your attention during the entire movie....Carice van Houten was spectacular and boy I must admit that Sebastian Koch is so handsome and perfect. :D

Ah, what an awesome movie. Just saw it today. Awesome acting, amazing story. The trailer alone really doesn't do it justice.

If you have not seen this movie, you simply have to. It's not only perhaps THE best foreign-language (Dutch) films that I've ever seen, I might place it in my favorite 100 films of all time. Action, suspense, intrigue, historical context, and even romance and finally an incredible ending. Hitchcock could not have done any better.
While all the acting in incredible, Carice van Houten steals to picture --- not to mention being sexy as hell!
However the real beauty of Black Book is that it really make you think. It shows you the ambiguity of humanity. You see the 'human side' of the Nazis in this film and you see viscous actions of the 'good guys' as well. While it does not justify the evils of Nazism, it does convey that there is good and evil on all sides -- and at a more macro level how a basically decent person can be perverted into an evil monster by a horrible system and criminal state --- and that without the tools that exist today to control a society.
It's is good warning to us all - in every country.
Carice van Houten is incredible in this role. The way she is able to convey emotions that are boiling under the surface is masterful acting. Meryl Streep has nothing on her. Can't believe how good she is. Also, I would rarely call a woman charismatic, but she is. Her character is playful, witty, brave, beautiful. A great female heroine, up there with Sarah Connor and Ellen Ripley. It's such a shame that almost nobody in United States has seen this movie. It has all the Hollywood bells and whistles, all you need to do is bear with the subtitles
This movie and Downfall are without a doubt, the best WW2 movies. Ever.

Verhoeven's Soldier of Orange and The Black Book are the two most neglected great films I know. And the two films that I have turned on more friends to and been thanked than any others. Nothing but edge of seat excitement, AND both based on true stories.
Really a very entertaining movie , from start to finish. Just watched it on Prime, Hollywood pay attention.
Really enjoyed this movie, despite the grim reality of that priod of time. Well done!

It was a good movie. If your looking for espionage, resistance,betrayal,tragedy and plot twisting and twisting again, this is for you! I never expected that the guy was the evil guy til the end.
Being unable to speak French is a hindrance to learning all the subtle nuances in this story. Even so, it is a powerful tale. Of that much we are certain
I appreciate that. It's just that there seems to be so much hate on almost every site I come upon. It just tears at the soul.
Carice van Houten is brilliant. I first saw her in Minoes, where she could talk with cats. She is awesome. And she can sing too: Ren Lenny Ren. Sorry for bad English, I'm Dutch too.

One of the best movies of all times
Way better than Schindler's List or other American films based on this period.
Saw this movie last night...very dramatic! It was a stressful time in our history...hope it never happens again.

Dutch sounds very very close to German - to my untrained ear - and yes there are times when German sounds like whole sentences in English.
Good film; I came away from that film still highly engaged in afterthought about it and the life of this woman - the lives of many women and what they - and everyone in general had to hustle to get through it all in one piece. How many post-war children- of wars all around the world had mother's who were brave and active -many many more than we know.

I'm dutch, and I'm not really good at German though. Though we have words kind of in general looking alike. Pronunciation is definitely VERY different. Dutch is harder and direct, more kind of spoken 'in the front of the mouth'. And the accents are pretty much different too when they speak english. IMO. But maybe that's from my dutch perspective.

Just think...if he made this instead of "Hollow Man," he might actually still have a career in the US. He'd be kinda like Wolfgang Petersen, just with worse career decisions...

As someone who's made a study of the resistance in Holland in the war years can I comment. None of the scenes in the film ever happeneed. It was a Dutch film company trying to be Hollywood. I'm glad they lost all their money. Holland has a great culture and a story to tell but this was'nt it.. It might aswell been made by Walt Dinsney. Dutch history on resistance in those years deserves more.

It is not based on a book / novel. It is a retelling of a true story reconstructed based on a book / ledger and the stories of people related to that. The little book that is in the film.
The movie is mostly in Dutch and some characters speak German.

Loads of twists and turns in this film. I quite enjoyed it...Though I'm not sure a gun fight on the streets in broad daylight wouldn't attract at least some attention.
Well, it did, eventually.. But keep in mind it's wartime, gunshots and bombs going off in the distance is not unheard of. And the Germans were doing raids where they shoot people all the time, like we see in the movie in one scene. There was night time curfew, for a reason. Civilians would just shut their drapes and hope it's not for them

Saw this film last week and I loved it. Mad me sad quite a bit, but the subject should. Four star film in my opinion.
Saw it last night on our Australian SBS channel. May the bravery, determination and resilience of all who resisted the Nazi crime machine never ever be forgotten.

Why did they cast such an Aryan-looking gentile woman as the lead? It undermines the story's credibility, because there is absolutely no way that anyone would mistake this woman for a Jew. At least Tarantino cast a Jewish actor, Mélanie Laurent, as his lead in Inglorious Basterds, which made her attempt to pass as an Aryan all the more powerful and authentic.
OK. I am Dutch and have a rather ordinary Dutch surname. But there also was a large group of Jewish Dutch people, with the same surname.
My aunt, who was a dark haired brunette like Carice van Houten, and in her early 20s, was regularly halted on the street during World War II and asked for her Ausweis.
Then after they read her first and last name, she was asked: "Why don't you have a "J" stamp and why aren't you wearing the yellow star on your coat?"
Do you really want to go there, just to satisfy your sense of stereotyping?

Also, it sounds to me that you're saying your aunt wasn't Jewish. Well, guess what? Neither is Carice van Houten, and I doubt anyone as Aryan-looking as the latter would have been harassed by the Nazis in real life. Maybe your aunt had a different look to van Houten. Either way, you seem to be implying that the Nazi occupation hurt everyone, Jew and gentile alike, to the same level. It most certainly did not.

@@moonheems3558 I'm tired of gentiles playing the victims and of Jews being cast as the baddies/Nazis in these types of stories. And yes, the Nazis targeted other people (mostly other minorities like Romanies and the disabled), but most gentiles weren't. Jews *were*.

Saying that Hitler and the nazis were retards does not explain why intellectuals joined the party. 75 per cent of the doctors in Germany were party members. It does not help to make fun of Hitler, even if you want to.
Im also from Holland. And even tough im dutch. I must say that all the dutch films suck. Except for this one. This one give you the feeling that you're into the story, Into the period when war strikes. You really have to see this movie becouse this is like saving pvt. ryan. A movie you must see.
