I've never listened to this podcast before and I only know about it because maia just posted about this ep on tumblr, and i gotta say that if i hadn't already been hooked by the concept of maia arson crimew talking about the 1995 movie hackers, yall wouldve hooked me with the barrett's privateers reference. anyway im only about a minute into the episode so i hope the rest of it lives up lol
The accent Dade has is supposed to be Matthew Brodrick's accent from War Games. He more or less hits it sometimes. My favourite part is the international league of hackers with Highly Accurate Japanese, Russian and German hackers (fucking amazing costume/set design for such a tiny incidental part). The portrayal of 90s hacker stuff isn't *too* far off, see Mondo 2000 and "The Real Cyberpunk Fake Book" and "Hacker Crackdown" (Agent Wendel et al is a reference to what that book is about: Operation Sundevil). I feel like hacker culture kind of had a dialogue with this, like you said, at first ironically, but taking the piss was part of the situation - we made fun of it but secretly thought it was rad as hell (and the Trans Feelings definitely helped).
Oh also when the twink cop is reading the manifesto, and he's like 'its cool' and the other dude is like 'it's commie bullshit' and yah, you're both right.
It seems like podcasting is just the latest thing that cool trans catgirls do, and I for one support our new kitten hacker overlords

It takes even longer to get back from Halifax after the main truck carries off both your legs.
