There were real life examples of literal children or dorky teenagers hacking stuff and having swat arrive , then prosecuted at the very highest levels of law, facing hypermax prison and with worldwide press attention.

    17:22 It's a reference to William Gibson. One of the founding authors of the cyberpunk genre. 17:26 Those books are real. They're called the Rainbow Series. I think a lot of appreciation of this film is lost on you because it's an hour and a half ester egg intended for an audience that knows something about computer science. Is it corny? Yes. Are the graphics way over the top? Yes. But disassembling binaries is not visually exciting. The execs wanted more than us just staring at a command prompt and a text editor, so of course they had to put in crazy visuals.

      Absolutely. This is a ridiculous movie. But it is chock full of real hacker / tech culture references. Seen through a drug-hazed Hollywood filter.
      So yeah - the guys might mock the term "handle" but that's a real thing (albeit more from BBS culture than Internet culture at the time). It's just that everything is portrayed in such an outlandish way that it seems unbelievable. I'm not sure if this film mocks hacker culture or tries too hard to celebrate it.

      arandomnamegoeshere I dont think they were mocking hacker culture - the movie contains way too many legitimate references to hacker culture to be mocking it. I think they figured out early on that they were not going to do a serious movie, and everyone simply rolled with it, piling on the sillyness and cheesiness in order to make the movie as entertaining as possible.

    A couple years ago I came across Macaulay Culkin at a pancake house in California. This was when he had long hair etc. I knew the face from somewhere but couldn't place it the whole time I was eating breakfast. Finally he and whoever he was with got up from their booth and started to walk outside and I figured it out. So I said casually to my friend I was eating with "I think we were just sitting across from Macaulay Culkin this whole time", and I don't know if he heard me or what, because at that instant he turns around, sees me looking at him, makes this chest-bumping motion as if to say "yeah it's me, so what?" and then flashes me a double thumbs-up as he gets in his car. Totally made my day haha. Seems like a really chill dude.

      Yeah, I think Mac's description of the music in the movie was a little off. He said it was all kinda techno and had a wanna-be Rage Against The Machine vibe. Orbital's music doesn't fit into either of those categories. One of my pet peeves is how pretty much all electronic music in the 90's was categorized as "techno". Also, I recall the entire soundtrack being electronic and nothing at all sounded like Rage Against The Machine type of music.

    • @chano1283
      @chano1283 4 года назад +16

      I believe the “Rage” sounding band that Mac is referring to is the band you see playing live towards the end of the movie. They were Urban Dance Squad, a Dutch band. Also, the soundtrack features like, half of the Prodigy album, “Music for the Jilted Generation”. Yes, annoying when all electronic music is called Techno. Adults, am I right? 🙄 🤣

    I only saw this movie once, in the 90s. Should rewatch it sometime.
    The names are probably the most realistic part of it. Quoting from 'The Hacker Crackdown' by Bruce Sterling (a book????):
    'It should be further recognized that the members of these groups are themselves pseudonymous. If you did, in fact, run across the "PhoneLine Phantoms," you would find them to consist of "Carrier Culprit," "The Executioner," "Black Majik," "Egyptian Lover," "Solid State," and "Mr Icom." "Carrier Culprit" will likely be referred to by his friends as "CC," as in, "I got these dialups from CC of PLP."'
    Worth reading for people who want to get a good idea of how hacking really was in the late 80s and 90s.

    It's so cool to see Macaulay in this type of setting. He fits in perfectly with the crew at RLM, and seems to be legitimately having a blast.

    I saw Macauley Culkin on the Joe Rogan show and I stopped watching that episode as I didn’t enjoy any of the back and forth. However, in this I really enjoyed his presence. I hope to see him back again. This feels like a good home for him in terms of providing input. He doesn’t feel like an outsider to the show.

      I can't believe that anything involving Joe Rogan would be awkward and off-putting. He's muscular, smokes weed, and knows all the secrets of quantum mechanics and how magnets work, as well as the oriental spiritual meditation techniques of the far east. The repeated head trauma has only made his neck thicker and stronger than ever before. He's basically the perfect man.

      I watched the Joe Rogan podcast too and Joe wasn't being an alpha dick as some think he was, it was just a slightly awkward exchange because some of Mac Daddies jokes fell flat or went that one riff too far.
      Also dont forget that Review is edited whilst JRE is just camera cuts, you could edit the JRE episode to make it look like they had amazing chemistry.

    to be fair, this movie was pretty accurate on how the "Scene" was back in 94-95. the techno babble was alright, and as a stylized visual representation of what looking through a file system for data, it is better than looking at a guy throwing commands in to a *-nix terminal for 10 minutes :) I love the movie hackers, its a beautiful time capsule.. of before the internet became widespread, and the script kiddies took over :p
