  • Welcome to our video on what happens if you accidentally hit the kill switch of your motorcycle whilst your riding. Turning off your motorcycle whilst you're riding seems like a bad idea, but is that really the case? Lets find out!

I was hoping someone else tried this so my impulsive thoughts didn't have to

So what happens if you cut the killswitch while pulling the throttle and keep pulling after cutting it?

Interesting video, on my little Mutt 125 which is carb'd the kill switch purely kills the electrics, I only caught this myself recently as I had to fix a starting issue

I was wondering this aswell, so thank you for the experiment in advance. But I was wondering if you don't use the clutch, so for example driving in 3rd gear and use the kill switch. Can you come to a (safe) stop without using the clutch. I had to think about this because I had a stroke wich paralyzed my left side for some time (luckely I wasn't om my bike when it happend). But I was wondering what I should do if it did.

Hi, can I feature it? Credited of course!
Also, where did this happen and what's your bike?

I've never owned an ultra modern bike that can cut fuel instantly but with all mine it shorts out the ignition circuit to ground therefore you lose your spark. If you'd done it then pulled the clutch you'd hear a vast difference in engine noise - it would be silent as an EV... with the clutch out your pistons are working and you're essentially doing the same as bump starting it, only there no spark to ignite to achieve combustion.

I hear it can short out so always use the key

In the old days when everything was carbureted, when you had a dog that habitually chased motorcycles, we would hit the kill switch as the dog ran out, still in 2nd or 3rd gear, and then turned it back on. The raw gas that was pumped into the exhaust would explode when the kill switch was turned back on and the bike bump started. That big boom would scare the dog and it would quickly learn to NOT chase motorcycles.
With the injected bikes, the kill switch does NOT turn off the electric fuel pump, but it may kill the injectors as well as the ignition coils..
However, maybe there is something in the kick stand switch circuitry or the neutral switch circuitry that would interfere with that too?
And I can see the rear tire locking up in first gear, the engine off but trying to turn would create enough vacuum to lock the rear up. But 2nd or 3rd should roll and then the question is will it roll long enough to unflood the cylinders enough to start.

you go from 60mph to unpowered engine braking. I've done it. EFI engines lose fuel and spark.

Try unkilling when you are still rolling at a decent speed, with the clutch engaged.
    . Bang!

Interesting experience 👏🏻 but it would be better to find information about it before doing so😅. Without knowing, i would say that using the kill switch (or emergency kill switch) inadvertently even with bike running nothing bad happen should occur or else the engineers would be some crazy bastards 😂
Typically, the kill switch powers off the engine (it seems that it does that by cutting off the contact from the ignition coil) and the key cuts off the electrical system. Some riders have the bad habit of switching off the motorcycle by using the red button (kill switch) instead of using the key and if it happens that they were distracted and go somewhere without turning the key off the electrical system is fully connected and can be drained!
As the rest, the gearbox is working as usual and connected to the transmission, and not being affected by either (key or kill switch).
Using the kill switch doesn’t affect the machine but I saw some references that is not advisable to turn the kill switch off when bike is running more intensely (whatever this means). Didn’t find any special reference killing the bike with the key.
One test not done is what happens if shutting down through the kill switch and then, while still rolling, the kill switch is set to the on position and if it’s a bad thing to do. 😊
As I said, interesting video. Thanks!
