A really useful and well made video Phil, especially as I’ve recently purchased a new Africa Twin and would look at trying and keep it as it looks now, spotless. My only question is. If you’ve applied an AFC50 treatment to the bike, does using an agitator and snow foam remove the ACF50 coating? Looking forward to the next instalment. 👍
Thanks, Dave! 😊👍 Good question, I’ll be covering that in more detail in the next episode. Yes and No is the answer. I would definitely apply acf50 to any bike for the first time, Brand new or Used, it leaves an ultra thin film on the bike which works for up to 12 months. A lot of bikers use their bike in the winter and just hose the bike down after use. If you give it a thorough clean it will need topping up but the first layer helps fight corrosion. I would reapply to the most exposed areas after a wash and I have some tips and techniques for that so watch this space. All being well it will online Friday 19 March! 😁 I hope this has helped? Enjoy the Africa Twin! 😊👍

Great video. I’ve always wondered what the best way to clean a bike is but it always felt like a silly question to ask. Have just bought a new bike and now I can’t wait to clean it….and ride it….and repeat! Thank you!

This has got to be one of the best most through tutorials for bike cleaning I have seen. Really good! Just got my first bike and passed my test at the start of the month. For cleaning and lubing the chain how often should you do that? Is it just every time you wash the bike? Thanks and loving your channel 👍🏻
Hi Jim. You’re far too kind, I’m pleased you’re enjoying the video’s and thanks for the encouragement! Congratulations on passing your test. It is recommended you lube the chain every 200 miles or so but not many people do. Just keep an eye on the chain and lube when needed. If you’re riding in wet weather a lot then you’ll probably need to do it more often. Again it depends on how often you wash the bike. Just keep a close eye on the chain so it doesn’t dry out. You don’t want to over lube it either as it will fling everywhere including on your rear tyre! I hope that helps? 😁👍
Well, I;m obviously going straight to hell because I have NEVAH washed my bike like THAT in the 47 years that I have been riding motorcycles. He used a blow dryer! Who does that? This guy needs to be a professor in a university for cleaning motorcycles somewhere ... I mean, WTF? I am going to go outside now, kneel down in front of my bike and humbly beg forgiveness from whatever Yamaha kami I have offended.
Why nobody's mentioning the quality of this video? Also two buckets? It's the first time on youtube that I'm seeing someone doing it in the right way. Good job sir
Thanks for your kind comments, I’m pleased you noticed I’m trying! I still have lots to learn but I’m enjoying passing on my experience and creating these videos. 😊👍
Great vid, I'm going to have to try Snowfoam. Cleaning an MC without causing damage is a fair bit of work. We have extremely hard water where I live. I use is a CR Spotless DIC-20 dionizing rinser. It eliminates the need to dry altogether, just a thorough top to bottom DI rinse and let it air dry. After 3 years of use on 3 vehicles I'm still on the original filter media. Huge timesaver and if you have hard water no amount of air or towel drying will ever be enough to eliminate spot build up.
Thanks for sharing Adam. It’s good you have found a fix which works for you. I must admit you have made me appreciate the water supply I get, it shows we shouldn’t take anything for granted! 👊

Thanks for sharing, very useful. I would recommend the Big Boy car blower to dry. It is a special purpose device and does not damage the paint work when touching by coincidence.
And here I am just cleaning the chain at start and then washing the bike with just a cloth and a bucket with car shampoo. After drying I line the chain. And I take like 2 hours to do this way and my back is killing me in the end ahaha. I can only imagine how much you take to clean your bike and I respect that.
Well done for making the effort. It can take a while to give the bike a really good clean but once it’s done, and the weather stays dry, then the bike looks great for a long time. You just have to sponge off the bugs! 🤣
I avoid power washers, last year my Jeep was washed by some guys using them ,the Electrics were affected windows etc.Buckets and garden hose from now on.
I’m sorry to hear you had trouble after having your car power washed, I try to avoid pointing it towards the electrics and keep some distance, I have just bought a new one from Mac Allister and love it. Thanks for your feedback though! 👍
Thanks, Sian! I’ll be happy to. Ride over in the Spring and I’ll get on it while you and Lyskie sit in the garden talking weddings! 🤣 Thanks for watching it matey! x
Just started watching 😮 white spirit on chain?! Doesn’t that damage/penetrate the seals and remove all the factory grease inside? Too aggressive in my opinion, I use Muc Off chain cleaner, amazing stuff 👍
Hi Dave. Thanks for watching and for your comment. I did a lot of research before using white spirit and I, and others, have found it to be fine. I did deliberately include it as a cheaper alternative to expensive chain cleaners, but in my experience any well known brand chain cleaner does the job. I’ve just been testing Autobrite Direct cleaning products which work really well, check out my recent videos! 👍
Used the white spirits, good job! Have you used kerosene yet for cleaning the chain? It does stink but does a good job too… Dr VStrom practices this method
I’m pleased you got on well with the white spirit, it’s a cheap alternative to chain cleaner. I’ve heard a lot of people say they use kerosene but I haven’t. Thanks for watching! 😁👍
The point of the air drying is to blast the water off the surface before it dries and leaves mineral water spots. This was a deep clean, not a shoddy wash... clearly you're not the target demographic here.
I’ve never used Duraglit, but I’m sure it will be okay, test it on a small area or another product first. I use White Diamond Metal Polish and/or Autobrite Direct Duo Paint and Metal Polish which is very good! 👍
Thanks for your comment. I wanted to show another alternative and as long as you wash and dry the chain it will be fine. Chain degreasers do work well and I tend to mix them up these days. Autobrite Direct offers a cheaper alternative which works really well! Check out one of my more recent cleaning videos. 👍
Hi David. Thanks for watching and commenting. I did a fair amount of research and found that white spirit is fine to use, especially as we aren’t leaving it on the chain for too long and drying it off afterwards! 👍
Please don't use white spirit on chains. It will destroy the rubber o ring seals. If you don't believe me, drop a rubber washer in a tin with white spirit in it. Come back and see what damage has been done after a day or two.
Thanks for your comment. My attention was never to leave the White Spirit on the chain for a day or two, after cleaning the chain and drying it, I then thoroughly washed the bike. In my research and experience, as long as you dry off the white spirit, the chain and o rings will be fine. I do appreciate your comment! 😊👍
Hi! If I use White Spirit I dry it off asap, I do also use chain cleaner, if I have any! 🤪 I’ve heard Paraffin can be used too! Thanks for sharing your tip! 👊
If you haven't already. please do yourself a huge favour and buy a dedicated air blower. They aren't that expensive and a proper one will do a proper job rather than the silly bulky leaf blower or the tediously slow hair dryer. Compressed air is also an option if you have a compressor, but the blower dryer has a hot air function that enables a quicker drying time.
I have indeed invested in a Bike Dryer, check this out ruclips.net/video/ZMpYpzHJE7o/видео.html It’s amazing how many people do like their leaf blowers but I do agree, this is the way to go! 👍
Brilliant! I thought I knew how to clean my bike!!! Ha!!! I'm going to follow your tips and see if my 2010 Street Triple can look fresh off the dealer floor, too!
That's one hell of an effort😅 phil but i think you wasted a lot of precious water and electricity to ensure the bike looks spotless. You already live in a very clean environment so in my opinion you overdid the job. Find an efficient way of cleaning your bike mate thatll be a win win.
@@TheAdventuresofPhilJones got white plastics on my bike. Should be fine 😄 if it would be painted, than I would dry the painted parts. Our tap water here in Germany, especially in my region, is very very soft. As an example: I Got a water heater (for a cup of tea or coffee) a couple years ago, still looks brand new on the inside, without any lime stains or build up on the inside.
I completely agree, it’s a bit easier keeping them clean in the summer but if you ride in the winter, forget it. Saying that, coating them with acf50 will help with winter riding! 👍
Cleaning bikes can be very therapeutic, I’m pleased you enjoyed the video! The chain cleaner I used is White Spirit which can be bought at DIY stores. Make sure the chain is thoroughly dry after cleaning your chain. I’ve also just published a new cleaning video which you might like, please check it out! 😊👍
Why drying your chain after cleaning it when you get it wet again afterwards. Sponsored by? No hard guess. But still some very useful tips. Many thanks. To reduce your effort? Buy a bike with full fairing? Besides you remind me of Peter Cushing 🙃
Thanks for watching. Good question. I wanted to show the process of cleaning and drying your chain for those who don’t need to wash their bike. Normally after cleaning the chain you would then immediately wash the entire bike but filming a video like this was very time consuming and creating this video was spread out over a few days. Remember this series was made during lockdown! 😩 A full fairing bike would be easier but they’re not for everyone. I’ve had the Peter Cushing resemblance once or twice before, if only I could act like him! 🤪👍
This time of year the roads are disgusting, I do agree but this year during the summer we had a drought, and Speedy stayed clean for most of the year. I only rinsed off the dust and dirt maybe a couple of times all year, which is crazy! It’s a different story now though 😩
Phil, Very helpful video on bike cleaning - never seen it done quite like that but it sure looks like the way to go for thorough cleaning a dirty motorcycle. Also, I've been shopping around for a better paddock stand, something that is safer, less risky and can easily and confidently be done by one person -dropped my Ducati Scrambler off my stand last week & crunched the dashboard. Never heard of Abba stands before and perusing the abba website it looks like the easiest, safest stand that I have seen. Loved the video of the 9 year old boy using it. PS - I also have a 2021 street triple RS, fantastic bike
Hi John, thanks for watching, I hope you found my approach of interest to you, it certainly does give your bike a thorough clean. I’m pleased to hear you discovered my Abba stand video too, please let me know how you get on if you get one! Sorry to hear about your mishap, it can easily happen. The Street Triples are a fun bike that’s for sure! 😁
Good question. I have read that Meguiars Wash and Wax can be used on a matte finishes but if I was you I would contact Meguiars and ask the question. Maybe ask Mutt what they would recommend to! Please let me know how you get on. 👍
I wouldn’t use any car/bike shampoo with wax or silicone on any Matte paint finish. Stay on the safe side and use a ph neutral ( as close as it can be) car wash product. Some companies have a dedicated matte finish shampoo. You don’t need to see any glossy spots on your Matte finish.
I'm bit leery about using degreasers on chains. Degreasing it too harshly can shorten its lifespan. It should absolutely be cleaned and re-lubricated with chain wax but personally I'd use some water soluble actual bespoke chain degreaser that is guaranteed to not do a number on the o-rings. Also, it was probably a good thing you didn't have a pressure washer; a bike doesn't need to have water squirted at it at those pressures, there are lots of exposed bolts, nooks and crannies etc - heck you can even manage to spray water into a tire if you hit the rim just right with a high pressure washer, I wouldn't really use one when cleaning a bike. There's no need. A steel-covered car, sure.
White Spirit. A motorcycle chain cleaner or degreaser works perfectly but this is a cheap alternative. Remember to wash and thoroughly dry your chain after cleaning it! 👍
Read the comments my friend, lots of people swear by using a leaf blower, although I’ve now invested in a motorcycle dryer as you may have seen in my recent cleaning video. I don’t know why you think I spend more time cleaning than riding. I do love a good clean, especially if I’m making a video about it! 🤪 👍
You can use a 2200w dog drier. Drying is as important as washing. Wax the painted surface, Si02 or Ceramic spray. The machine in the icon is a mini rotary that I use to get scratches out of paint. I detail bikes plus cars. Nice video.
Thanks for your comment. I don’t like to do that. The reason being is that if you start the engine when the bike is wet it can leave water marks on the engine. It looks much nicer if you can dry the water off first with either a drying towel or a bike dryer. That’s my personal preference anyway! 😊
Thank you. You don’t want to leave the chain soaking in white spirit, but if you clean the chain, maybe even rinse it with water before drying, then lube it, the o rings will be fine. 👍
I'd recommend ditching the hair dryer, and buying a proper air blaster. Like from Metrovac, they make an assortment from small to large. The Sidekick model is the one I personally bought, and it's outstanding. It filters the intake air, so you can't accidentally fire grit at your bike, and it lightly warms the air as well. But primarily it just fires copious amounts of air at the bike. Absolutely ideal for when you just don't want water spots - sure, you could rinse the whole bike with deionized water as the very last step, that dries 100% clean because there are no minerals left in it to form drop marks, but if you don't do a rinse with deionized water, you just blast the bike dry with air and break up all the water drops before they can form marks.
Hi Charlie. That’s a good question! Control switches on your handlebars are designed to get wet, saying that I have a couple of personal tips which might help. I try not to get them too wet when washing the bike. A soft brush or sponge with mild soapy water will remove any dirt. My top tip is two or three times a year, when the bike is clean and the switches are completely dry, is spray the switches with WD40. Don’t be afraid to give them a good coating outside and apply some in the gaps where your indicator switch moves for example. This helps keep the condensation and water out and keeps them in top condition, it also helps stop them getting too dirty in the first place. I hope this helps! 😁
That question has popped up before. There are some products out there for Matte paint but I haven’t used them. Did you see my Autobrite Direct video? I’ll share a link, contact them as they’re very helpful and will recommend which of their products you can use, I have a discount code in the description of that video too. Let me know how you get on! 👍 ruclips.net/video/ZMpYpzHJE7o/видео.html
Subscribed. I love your no nonsense approach. I watched your ACF50 vid and used it on my GSA. The next week it went into BMW, and they now do a video visula check when its in the shop. The techncian called out on the vid "Good to see its been ACF50'd". Re leafblower. Yes for electric, probably no for a petrol one? I think on petrol ones the 2 stroke exhaust blows out throgh the blower so that would get 2 stroke oil residue back on your bike. I've not see anyone say it on the comments so far Phil, so I'll say it. Do you fancy coming to do mine?
Thanks for watching, subscribing and the encouragement! It’s great to hear your BMW technician was impressed! 😊 That’s a good point about the petrol engine leaf blower. I’ve recently bought myself a Pet Dryer and it works really well. A few people have messaged me asking if I’m free to help, I’m a bit behind on editing some new RUclips videos, so it’s probably best I concentrate on them for now! 🤪👊
@@TheAdventuresofPhilJones I've done 8 years long like this without any problems, if the rear stand is stable, should not be any problem, but anyone need to choose his way...😉
ACF 50 was never designed for external protection on motorcycles ,it’s designed for the internal nooks & crannies of aircraft frame to protect against condensation & moist air . It’s not designed for external weather like rain washing it off . The only reason people think it works on motorcycles ,is because they are fussing & cleaning them regularly & not giving the salt chance to corrode the bike anyway .
I agree, it wasn’t designed for motorcycles but it does the trick. I know of bikers who have applied acf50 before Christmas, used the bike without washing it, just hosing it down, then in the Spring given the bike a thorough clean and it has been fine. So many people I know love using it, including me, and my bike loves me for it too! 😊👍
@@TheAdventuresofPhilJones It’s the hosing it down that washes the salt off the bike & prevents corrosion not the ACF50, I have been riding bikes on the road in all weathers for over 50 years . I give my bikes the odd big wash & Polish now & then plus the odd squirt of WD 40 on electrics plus always make sure I hose down bike with water after riding in salty conditions . I have a big bottle of ACF 5O plus the applicator & never yet used it ,as I found out it’s not meant to be used external for weather protection . It’s purpose is to protect internal areas from moisture ,not external surfaces that are prone to driving rain & constant road water spray .
Thanks so much. I wanted to show a cheaper alternative to chain cleaner, that also works. In my experience and research it is safe to use as long as you dry the chain thoroughly after cleaning it! 👍
It’s nice when the roads are clean and dry and the bike look nice all summer but it is soul destroying if you go out for a winter/spring ride. Such is bike life! 🤪

Thanks for watching. Of course, the Pre Wash cleaner helps safely remove bugs, road tar, dirt without needing to scrub, Snow Foam does a similar thing but I find the Foam covers the entire bike and finishes off removing the majority if the dirt, which is what you want to do before using a quality wash mitt. Check out two new videos using Autobrite Direct products where I also explain the process ruclips.net/video/ZMpYpzHJE7o/видео.html

You can also us a shop vac if you switch the hose around and attach it to the exhaust port, but you want to make sure that the canister is completely empty and free of dirt.
Fantastic Phil, you forgot to mention the key ingredient - PATIENCE! ;) I struggle to keep my bikes A1 as I ride through winter in North Scotland. Coming home in sleet in the dark makes it impossible to keep on top of. Currently, get pro ACF50 twice a year and hose down as often as possible. Plus there's the issue of deep cleaning removing the ACF50. Interestingly, in my last 2 trade-ins the dealer gave me a price for my bikes without even seeing them, makes me wonder, other than personal pride if it's worth the anxiety of trying to keep the bike pristine. Cheers.
You definitely need a bucket full of patience that’s for sure, I also find it therapeutic too! I’m sure your bike doesn’t stay clean for too long riding in those conditions. Personally, I’d do my best to keep the bike protected from the elements, I can understand you wouldn’t want to deep clean it after every time you went out. What bike are you riding? 😁👍

Sorry for the late reply. It really depends on the road conditions and your mileage. The manual recommends lubing the chain every 200 hundred miles I believe but in reality most people lube them after 500 miles, some say longer. Keep an eye on the chain and if it’s dry lube it. You probably only have to thoroughly clean the chain twice a year but again, it depends on your mileage! 👍

Thanks dude! I’m pleased you enjoyed it. It certainly does help look after the bike and keeps the rust away! 😁
Great video. I’ve always wondered what the best way to clean a bike is but it always felt like a silly question to ask. Have just bought a new bike and now I can’t wait to clean it….and ride it….and repeat! Thank you!
Thanks so much! There are so many ways you can clean your bike and this is what I’ve found works for me. I showed my ridding buddy how to clean her bike using these techniques and she couldn’t believe how it transformed the bike. I’m pleased the video has helped! Thanks for the encouragement 😁👍
Wow, I only thought my bike was clean.
I bought that pro sprayer 2 and the snow foam liquid but it just sprays out soapy water. I have the mixture levels correct. It didn’t come with a purple nozzle though, just a grey one and the white one.
I’m not sure why that is, have a word with IK, my one works really well. I hope you get it sorted!
Thanks for the tips fella gave it a whirl and the bike looks far better than the old sponge 🧽 dip n wash cheers for the vids keep em coming 🙂
That’s fantastic to hear! It does make such a difference to the finish doesn’t it?! 😁👍
There’s still time to repent of your sins, brother!
A professor of cleaning sounds awesome, thanks for watching and making me laugh! 😁🙏
Thanks a lot for this video! I know you probably won't read this, but do you have a tip for cleaning the brushes etc. after use? They get so greasy.

Thanks for sharing, very useful. I would recommend the Big Boy car blower to dry. It is a special purpose device and does not damage the paint work when touching by coincidence.
Thanks for watching and for your recommendation. I’m looking forward to getting a dryer before too long! 😁👍

Love watching your vids Phil , its a reference when am cleaning my bike.....thankyou as always.....Brendan.
Thanks Brendan, that’s great to hear. Thanks for the encouragement! 🙏
why would anyone need to learn what they already know. SOAP AND WATER its really not that hard. a hair dryer? no thanks.. hahahahaha
Perhaps there’s more to cleaning than soap and water? Each to their own, eh! 🤣 Thanks for watching though 😁👍
The point of the air drying is to blast the water off the surface before it dries and leaves mineral water spots. This was a deep clean, not a shoddy wash... clearly you're not the target demographic here.
Great job
Regarding spokes, can I use Duraglit silver on them without wrecking them or the coating on them?
I’ve never used Duraglit, but I’m sure it will be okay, test it on a small area or another product first. I use White Diamond Metal Polish and/or Autobrite Direct Duo Paint and Metal Polish which is very good! 👍
I would be concerned that a strong degreaser such as white spirits would damage the rubber O-rings in the chain.
Thanks for the video, Phil. But doesn't white spirit damage to the O rings in the chain?
Hi David. Thanks for watching and commenting. I did a fair amount of research and found that white spirit is fine to use, especially as we aren’t leaving it on the chain for too long and drying it off afterwards! 👍
Just one question.
What exactly does your coaster hum while you're washing the bike?
Dancing Queen or something like that?
Can you rephrase that please?! 🤣
HI PHIL. Have you used Paraffin to de grease your chain ,probably kinder to the O rings.
Great video , orders a ik foam pro 2 on the back of this , quick question how much do you dilute your foam cleaner by ?
Awesome, thanks for letting me know! Go by the manufacturers instructions, Meguiars is 5 parts water to 1 part snow foam. 👍

i allways pre then rinse .. snow, rinse snow, mitt then rinse
That's one hell of an effort😅 phil but i think you wasted a lot of precious water and electricity to ensure the bike looks spotless. You already live in a very clean environment so in my opinion you overdid the job. Find an efficient way of cleaning your bike mate thatll be a win win.
Saving water should definitely be a priority, you’re not wrong! 🙏
For drying I just use the sun, or compressed air. Works perfectly.
As long as the sun doesn’t leave watermarks on it! 👍

Hi, This video is amazing and like therapy but can I ask something?
what is it chain cleaner solution? is it gas oil and other one?
I meant to say, not sponsored by anyone in this video, I bought everything I used. 😀
Very nice, but impossible to stay clean while living in the Uk, wet roads every day and rain
This time of year the roads are disgusting, I do agree but this year during the summer we had a drought, and Speedy stayed clean for most of the year. I only rinsed off the dust and dirt maybe a couple of times all year, which is crazy! It’s a different story now though 😩
Wtf 😂. ITS ONLY A BIKE!!!
Thanks for posting this. I noticed his stand and was wondering what it was. Looks like a smaller version of the Bursig. Would be great in my garage
Hey Phill! Can I use wash and wax on my Mutt GT-SR matte black and silver?
Good question. I have read that Meguiars Wash and Wax can be used on a matte finishes but if I was you I would contact Meguiars and ask the question. Maybe ask Mutt what they would recommend to! Please let me know how you get on. 👍
I wouldn’t use any car/bike shampoo with wax or silicone on any Matte paint finish. Stay on the safe side and use a ph neutral ( as close as it can be) car wash product. Some companies have a dedicated matte finish shampoo. You don’t need to see any glossy spots on your Matte finish.
you forgot to go back to the chain
What did you use to clean chain? I did not understand. Thank you
White Spirit. A motorcycle chain cleaner or degreaser works perfectly but this is a cheap alternative. Remember to wash and thoroughly dry your chain after cleaning it! 👍
Buy yourself a warm air blower for drying the bike there brilliant
@@Carvetii Thanks for the tip. I bought one last year and agree they’re brilliant! 😁
ok…you leafblower was over the top….why do I think you spend more time cleaning than riding? LOL
@@TheAdventuresofPhilJones Indeed you do!
You can use a 2200w dog drier.
Drying is as important as washing. Wax the painted surface, Si02 or Ceramic spray.
The machine in the icon is a mini rotary that I use to get scratches out of paint.
I detail bikes plus cars. Nice video.
I see you did end up with Mrs. Jones’s hair dryer…definitely the riskiest part of this video!
Absolutely! Especially as on another day it overheated!!! 😬 Hopefully, new bike dryer coming soon 🤞
As they say, whatever keeps them off the streets
Folks, is it okay to turn on the engine to heat up dry the bike?
then apply anti rust oil on bolts and metals after washing?
Thanks for your comment. I don’t like to do that. The reason being is that if you start the engine when the bike is wet it can leave water marks on the engine. It looks much nicer if you can dry the water off first with either a drying towel or a bike dryer. That’s my personal preference anyway! 😊
Great and helpful video, i just wanted to know if white spirits are safe for chain o rings
Wash before a ride will remove the water and save time drying. Clean chain after a ride so the solvent has time to evaporate
This is true, but depends how much effort you want to put in applying other products! 👍

Hi! Is there any issue if I wash the handlebar electronic buttons?
Don’t clean the chain, just grease it up;)
I’m not sure I would agree with that my friend as it can collect dirt which will damage the chain! Thanks for watching and commenting! 😁👍
For chain, dry brushing at first, give better results. It takes most of dirt off before fluid wash.
To much work for me. I do quick cleaning only.

@@TheAdventuresofPhilJones I've done 8 years long like this without any problems, if the rear stand is stable, should not be any problem, but anyone need to choose his way...😉
@@zolitimo5482 Absolutely! It seems like a quick and easy way to do it for sure, I’m pleased it works for you! 👊

Hi Phil, I would recommend a small air compressor. They work a treat. Great video 👍
Hi Steven. Funnily enough some Instagram friends told me they use a compressor too. Thanks for the tip and kind comments! 😊👍

How long will the chain last after doing this?
Sorry for the late reply. It really depends on the road conditions and your mileage. The manual recommends lubing the chain every 200 hundred miles I believe but in reality most people lube them after 500 miles, some say longer. Keep an eye on the chain and if it’s dry lube it. You probably only have to thoroughly clean the chain twice a year but again, it depends on your mileage! 👍
