Dam just installed the ring alarm system and left the house thinking I was done and already being monitored when I saw the AT&T logo. Didn't know I had to go thru the "pratice" or it even existed. Great info/video
I just found out that Amazon owns Ring. Unbelievable. Amazon is going to own us pretty soon. Thank you for not wasting my time by providing an informative, yet succinct video. :-)
For now, you can kind of work the contact sensors to adhere to the glass, that way if it breaks, the sensor falls and the alarm triggers. Its a bit of work, but a work around until glass break sensors are a thing.
Hi another fantastic video it’s a shame ring don’t sell they sensors in the UK the sensors I am using are EVE elgato plus I am using Nest smoke and carbon monoxide alarm they are not cheap in the UK probably cheaper in the US
Great review! I had the ring alarm system but I returned it. I think it's a great system with a great concept, but I have over 20 Zone that I need covered, and when a sensor is activated it does not announce the sensor's name. Knowing the name of your door and window sensors is very critical, especially if you have a big house and one of your doors or windows are opened. You need to know where to go and investigate. Hopefully ring will update their software to announce the sensors as they are opened. if they can upgrade their system to do this I will buy the system again. One more thing to your subscribers, you only get audible alerts from the main base station, not the additional keypads. it would be nice if the keypads could also alert you to sensors that are being open and closed.
@@Photo75Dog yes it does. It is very accurate and informative about sensors being activated and motion being detected. It will also let you know about your bypassed sensors. My main issue is that my current alarm let me know specifically which window and which door is being opened when I'm at home. So if I'm in the living room and my kitchen window is opened, I will know that it's my kitchen window. With the ring alarm it only Chimes, this leaves you to investigate all of your sensors. I have over 20 sensors in my house, it is impossible for me to know from a chime which sensor is being opened.
Thanks for the info... yes, it is limited as to the chime but it can easily be updated by Ring. I rarely use my keypad because it is way easier on the app.. It also doesn't have silent alert or a panic button on the app...another thing that Ring can update...
One more thing to add, I had two additional keypads for with my Ring Alarm purchase, I thought the keypads would act as speakers(relaying the chime alerts), but they didn't. The purpose was to have a keypad on each floor allowing me to hear the alarm chimes, but the chime alerts only come from the base station. I was ready to replace my entire system with Ring Alarm with an initial investment of over $650(kit and sensors), but these short falls were enough to make me wait for an updated version(software and additional hardware). Thanks for all of your reviews, LH.
Thanks for the information ,I have a quick question it looks like the alarm main keypad is the brain for the alarm ,normally there is a delay on the front door for the user to press their code and disarm the alarm, what happens if the burglar brakes true the front door uses the 30 seconds delay grabs the keypad an deeps it in to a bucket full of water or toilet how will the alarm communicate to the ring central station ?
Does Ring publish any specifications for the motion sensors? I'm wondering about animals... I have an 80lb dog and don't need him setting off the motion sensors all the time.
I am a subscriber to your channel and I really find you knowledgeable and interesting. But there's something that I'd like to know and I can't find it from any place on RUclips or in real life. I would like to be able to link all of my echo devices so that when someone comes to the door and rings the doorbell it lets me know all through the house. I do have the ring security system hooked up to one of my devices but it will not share or I don't know how to share that could you please make a video on that

will this smoke detector make a phone call if it detects fire? can it be placed on a small business like a shop ? so if there is a fire we could protect our business?
Great video, thanks for sharing! Does ring show you the battery level status of your first alert smoke/carbon detectors so you know when the battery needs changing. I currently use these smoke detectors with smartthings and it does show it in the smartthings app. Thank you
@lifehackster thanks for great videos. I have a question about the Ring window sensor. What if someone breake in by bresking the window without moving the sensor? Is it going to alert ? Thanks
No it is not..that is why Ring needs to release a window break sensor..for now, motion sensor inside will be the second line and last line of defense...
Great video my friend, I have ADT right now and I pay $60 a month do you think I should consider switching to ring security system? I have 5 ring cameras around my house but I want to make sure this system really works before making a decision.
Great review! What does the Ring system say when the smoke detector goes off? Will it tell you which smoke sensor was triggered? Also, can you silence the smoke detector from the app? Thanks ahead of time.
I haven't tried it as to the smoke detector but I'm pretty sure it will give you an alert and will show which smoke detector went off (you name and set the location of the detector during setup). I don't think you can silence the detector from the app...it would be a nice update and also an option to test the detector from the app.
Hello LifeHackster, can you make the First Alaert Alarm Zwave to go off when the ring alarm goes on or does he First Alert Zwave Alarm can link with Alexa? thanks

I'll do that in my update video..I think I showed it also in my first video...as to the glass sensor.. I'm hoping...well actually, they need to have a glass break sensor..it always has been a part of other security systems....
When using the smoke alarm, does the central monitoring station get alerted even if the system is not active? If I am home and the system is off I want the central station to be notified if the smoke alarm goes off. great review
Nice review, thanks. Did you have to provide ring with the number of the closest police and fire dispatcher so they know who to call if you're unavailable?. Also is it possible to assign multiple unarmed codes. This way you can give one to the dog sitter and another to a friend checking on the house. You should be able to identify who entered and unarmed the system. Thank you.
I'm a little confused... With the door/window sensors, is the length of time between the sounding of the alarm and the actual "trip" configurable? Thanks in advance!
Thank you LifeHackster for a great review. I am in the process of ordering my alarm system now. I have double hung windows with an ADT system so my sensors are placed in the middle of the lower window protecting both the top and bottom part of the window. Hope that makes sense. Now, my question is.....will the magnetic part(small part) of my ADT sensor work with the RING sensor(big part). The magnetic part of the Ring sensor is too big to replace the ADT magnetic part leaving me to place two sensors on one window. Not liking that idea as it will cost me several hundred more dollars to be fully protected with Ring.
I'm not sure if it will work. Either way though, you will still need to get Ring sensors (only sold in pairs) per window that can be opened . I'm waiting for them to release their glass break sensor which I don't have to put contact sensors on each of my windows. Most burglars will break the windows anyways and go through it and they might not even need to open it to trip the sensor.
Not that I know of....but they will be releasing their stickup camera in the next few weeks and I'm hoping that at least it can be used as the alarm's motion detector too... we will see.
Thanks for doing this video. I have been on the fence about ring vs nest alarm but I think Ring just won. Consider doing a 6 month update on how the system is doing. Side question-if you had to install a battery only camera would you go ring spotlight or Argus 2?
You are welcome and I will definitely do an update on it again.... as to battery power camera..I'll go with the Argus 2, Arlo Pro 2 and Blink XT in that order.
Not that I noticed. It doesn't use WiFi/internet all the time. It does use it mostly when it gives you alerts and when you are accessing the system through the app or online.
How does it work with a power outage? Will my phone still be alerted with any problems. And if it has a battery during a power outage how long will the backup battery last? Thanks
Bulldog FIT during an outage you are alerted from the app that the base station lost power and your internet connection is lost. When you sign up for the monitoring service the base station has a cellular backup signal with AT&T so it alerts ring in case your alarm is set off. The base station also has a ring battery backup that should last 2 days or longer.
I was watching other videos and the control panel keypad has a power source. How did you connect that part with your house? I'm trying to figure out how best to put that in the house before I decide buying this. Thanks!
If I am not using the monitoring (as I live outside the US) can I still use the app to arm and disarm remotely from my phone?. Also, will it alert my phone if there is a break-in (through the app)? Thanks
Can you trigger events with the First Alert detector? Can you for example make lights blink red if there is a fire or yellow if there is a CO detection?
Is there any way to have a unique sound for the alarm when it activates on the iPhone? Ring offers so many alert options for motion being detected by their cameras (including the new Christmas ones] but nothing for the alarm. I ask because mine went off today and the only real alert I got [before they called me) was the default apple alert sound....which I didn’t hear. Yet when one of my cameras gets a motion hit I get one of the great unique sounds. Am I missing a setup feature somewhere to enable this?
You are right. There is only the generic tone at this time and I cannot find any settings to change it at this time anyways. This is one thing that Ring needs to update.
Love your reviews. Thanks for doing such a great job. Are the floodlight cameras under professional monitoring like deep sentinel to receive an alarm before burglar enters house?
Which model of the First Alert is compatible with Ring? I notice there are 2 wireless versions on Amazon. Ring's website doesn't make this clear neither.
It says "ZCOMBO" in Amazon and First Alert updated their description to include "Certified for use with Nexia Home Intelligence, Ring Home Security System, and other third party Z-Wave systems; not compatible with WINK or Onelink"
Great review!!! Is there a way to get notifications as to which non motion sensor is going off example being door1, door2 and so on? Do you get notifications of the motion sensors as well example being Living room motion or kitchen motion? Also can you have multiple items that sound alarms at once? Do you feel there's any delay in openings compared to notification time and alarm trigger timing? Thanks for all your videos!!!
Ring have updated this and Yes.. you can set specific sensors to send a push notification to your phone when it detects motion or when somebody open or closes a door or window. Notifications are instantaneous.
I haven't had any... I had issues with my internet one night and it alerted me that the alarm is running on cellular backup and the essential security features are working normally.
So how much have u spent just on the Ring alarm products just to get setup..looks like around $300 or so after sensors etc... It will be interesting to see how it works with everyday use..I’m still not sold on Rings, Nest or even Simplisafe home alarm systems and there monitoring..it doesn’t see worth the cost..I didn’t have to pay anything for the equipment I have for my home alarm system’s, all I pay is month to month with no contract..
As of this setup...it is not complete yet because I either need more contact sensors or wait for the glass break sensor.. but right now with 3 doors + 2 windows and a smoke and CO detector $350... for contact sensors, I will need 10 more sensors which would be another 200 bucks...so around $550... and only $10/month or free if you look at it when you have Ring cameras already...so it pays for itself pretty quick after a year. I pay $40/month on my old system.
LifeHackster Wow...thx for the info..and then u have to hope Ring can provide the service/dependability you were used to with other provider..I think thats having “to many eggs in basket.” depending on Ring for monitoring your house alarm😮...I pay $25 per mnth ( not on a contract) to my alarm company and have all the sensor for doors, windows, motion sensor,Fire/CO2 alarm and glass break sensor was free thu the company..and I have the peace of mind if my diy cams are having issue my home alarm is always working and Not a part of my diy cams...and lets be honest sometimes the diy cam companies have issue with firmware updates and servers..
I have ADT door and window sensors from previous homeowner. I believe it’s z-wave compatible. Is it possible to pair these to get notifications through ring app?
Are you still using the ring alarm system? Now that i have the stickup cam and see how easy it is to use, im really thinking about getting this alarm system.
@@LifeHackster Have you heard anything from Ring about glass break sensors? I know they are going to use Echos for this, but I've gone all in on Google Home and don't want a bunch of Alexas around my house when they'll only being listening to breaking glass
Yes they are. When you install the smoke/CO detector, Ring will also email you information if you needed a separate fire alarm permit...which in my case, I didn't.
Can you please do a power outage simulation review? I can't find any information how you verify the cellular backup connection. Ideally, I would love for you to do a review that starts with you turning off the power to your house at the main breaker and see how the ring performs.... With the unit in practice mode of course....
I will on my update video but I'm not sure when...yet..I can tell you though that it is automatic and you will get a notification that the power or internet is out and the Alarm is in battery and cell back up.
I've got a First Alarm Smoke Alarm successfully paired with my Ring Base System but when I test the smoke alarm, there is no audible notification or text alart sent. 🤷🏻♂️
I do have it but I haven't tried to simulate to trigger it off. Probably in my future videos because I do have to collab with their monitoring station if I want to test it and don't want my local firefighters go into my house for a false alarm.
LifeHackster Can you call the Ring monitoring station and ask them to put your ring alarm in practice mode for say 30 to 40 minutes? Just wondering....
Ring alarm is $10 per month, or save $20 and pay $100 for the year and that covers unlimited camera coverage. By far the cheapest home security on the market. I just ditched SimpliSafe which I believe is the next cheapest and that was $27/month. I already had these smoke/CO detectors and the door bell. So now I saved over $200 for the year and now all my cameras and smoke/co detectors are monitored. You can't beat it.
Yeah Nest / Google ish whatever limbo company. The sad thing I've seen from them, I haven't seen any new devices to add to the security system come out and its been what a year now? Your right its really damn expensive. Almost Brinks or ADT expensive after they suck you dry with long term deals. 😂
Yeah same here with my Hello unit. I got a weird issue when the damn thing just stops flagging any motion activity at night, the unit records it just fine and even sends notification about a visitor, but it doesn't flag that moment in time.
Hello when I arm my system and start counting the time for me to leave the house. Once I open the door to leave the house, the alarm goes off. What is the problem ?
As long as you have power and internet when the alarm goes off, a notification will be sent to you. If not, then the monitoring station will be notified via cellular and they will notify you.
I sent you a contact card/comment on your website but it appeared the main page hadn't been updated since January 2018. Needless to say, it appears Ring is NOT open to suggestions on their devices or software as I received this from a customer support representative 5 minutes ago.. your take?! Although we would love to embrace every idea proposed to us, regretfully, we are unable to do so. Ring does not accept creative ideas, proposals, concepts, suggestions or materials (whether of a technical, business, financial or other nature) other than those that we specifically request. I am disheartened to hear this news they are not open to suggestions and would love your take on this.
What is your suggestion? Are you a member of their explorer program? They also have a forum where you can post your idea and if a lot of people will agree that it needs to be implemented, then they will integrate it.
@@LifeHackster My suggestion was geofencing to turn alerts on and off so I do not have to set a generic timeframe that I want to disable alerts when I may be away during those times and want alerts. I had another one a while back but I forget, I think it was to stop recording similar to Nest with both of these suggestions but it appears Ring has already adopted that. I am not part of their explorer program, will have to check it out and also the forums!
Half of my motion sensor chime but doesn’t send a push notification (disarm mode). Do you know why this happen or how to fix it? I already tried reconfiguring it. Notifications work on and off. :(
Yes, as another layer of protection inside your house. Plus, if there is a power or internet failure, you are still protected. Those 5 ring cameras will not alert you or record anything when the power is out.
Yah, I don’t think they’ll make a glass break sensor, they already have what they believe to be enough reasons for customers to choose ring (affordable monthly plans and larger ecosystem). They want that extra $5 a month, for glass breaking detection services!!

Thank you david11g35 for the answer...and as to the cellular backup...there is no additional fee when ATT is used.
I was watching other videos and the control panel keypad has a power source. How did you connect that part with your house? I'm trying to figure out how best to put that in the house before I decide buying this. Thanks!
Peter Lam - it has a rechargeable battery that would last 6 to 10 months or so... so you don’t need to have it wired...you can install it anywhere...
That's awesome! Hopefully there's a battery indicator so it notifies you when it needs to get charged.
yes on the phone app
@lifehackster Costco and Costco.com has a deal for 230 with 6 sensors included
Cool... that is a good deal.
If I am not using the monitoring (as I live outside the US) can I still use the app to arm and disarm remotely from my phone?. Also, will it alert my phone if there is a break-in (through the app)? Thanks
Yes but it will not have a cellular backup.
Can you trigger events with the First Alert detector? Can you for example make lights blink red if there is a fire or yellow if there is a CO detection?
Not that I know of... when it gets triggered..the siren is going to go off.
@@LifeHackster You mean the siren on the base station. Ring, if i remember correctly, doesn't have a separate siren.
Wish I could get this in Australia.
I think soon, they will be shipping over there.
Is this available in the UK lifehackster? I've bought the floodlight cam, doorbell v2 and wouldn't mind the alarm.
Not yet I think. Contact them and ask when it will be available.
Have you experience any sensors disconnection? Some people are complaining about the frequent connection problem.
I haven't had any... I had issues with my internet one night and it alerted me that the alarm is running on cellular backup and the essential security features are working normally.
Great review. Very helpful.
Thank you.
LifeHackster
Wow...thx for the info..and then u have to hope Ring can provide the service/dependability you were used to with other provider..I think thats having “to many eggs in basket.” depending on Ring for monitoring your house alarm😮...I pay $25 per mnth ( not on a contract) to my alarm company and have all the sensor for doors, windows, motion sensor,Fire/CO2 alarm and glass break sensor was free thu the company..and I have the peace of mind if my diy cams are having issue my home alarm is always working and Not a part of my diy cams...and lets be honest sometimes the diy cam companies have issue with firmware updates and servers..
Costco sells Ring Alarm 10 piece package which includes 6 sensors for just $225. Amazing deal.
@@markh8921 which alarm company do you have currently?. Were the sensors etc always free
Rowena Fletcher
Sensors were also free..
My alarm company is one of the major companies..
I have ADT door and window sensors from previous homeowner. I believe it’s z-wave compatible. Is it possible to pair these to get notifications through ring app?
Not at this time. You can only use Ring's sensor at this time.
How do you know when a sensor battery is getting low? Thanks for the video.
You should be able to see if from the app but I'm pretty sure, it will send you notification when it does.
Thank you, for the video. Have you found any lag or bugs in the app?
Nothing yet. It has been working without any issues.
Can your existing z-wave contact sensors work with this? Also, will the glass break sensor from Lowes work?
At this time, no. I'm hoping Ring will open it to other z wave manufacturers in their future updates.
How much is the “professional monitoring” a month? Is it all inclusive with then $100 annually?
Yes, it is inclusive. 100/yr for cloud access of unlimited Ring cameras in one address and professional monitoring of their Alarm system.
That’s is considerably cheaper than Simply Safe
did you get your alarm certificate from Ring for your homeowner insurance?
Henry Lam I am also interested in this. Saving a nice chunk of change from the insurance with my current alarm certificate
You can download that from their website. Log on and download.
Yes. You log in to your account from a computer -> settings -> monitoring -> certificate at the bottom
Are you still using the ring alarm system? Now that i have the stickup cam and see how easy it is to use, im really thinking about getting this alarm system.
Yes and no issues so far.
@@LifeHackster Have you heard anything from Ring about glass break sensors? I know they are going to use Echos for this, but I've gone all in on Google Home and don't want a bunch of Alexas around my house when they'll only being listening to breaking glass
Are there any ring smoke alarms
Great Review!! Appreciate the information.
Thank You.
So with the smoke alarm, does the central monitoring station get alerted if it sounds an alarm? Or is it just your phone that gets alerted?
Yes they are. When you install the smoke/CO detector, Ring will also email you information if you needed a separate fire alarm permit...which in my case, I didn't.
Great video!
Thanks.
Does Ring have a backup battery for when the lights go out? It doesn't a cellular connection does it?
Yes and yes..backup battery and cellular ATT connection.
@@LifeHackster How long does the backup battery last? Does the system last at all if there is no monitoring?
LifeHackster not with Verizon cellular connection?
Good stuff pogie!
:)
LifeHackster thanks for doing these reviews pare! I went with the ring system and cameras based on your reviews. Very informative!
lowell a - you are welcome :)
@@LifeHackster awesome thank you. I just ordered the 14 piece set.
Can you tell me how much it cost for home monitoring
10 dollars a month or 100 dollars a year.
Question on the smoke detector. When tripped, does it trigger the base station alarm?
I haven't tested it and it is a bit hard to test.
I've got a First Alarm Smoke Alarm successfully paired with my Ring Base System but when I test the smoke alarm, there is no audible notification or text alart sent. 🤷🏻♂️
woohoo 10k!!!
Thanks...
Try out the Alexa gaurd
Shoot I spelled guard wrong
I need to test it out. Thanks.
Can you do a video of their smoke detectors and how they work when there is smoke in the house
Excellent and Thank you.
You are welcome.
When the siren sounds will it also trigger the sirens on ring outdoor cameras?
Not yet. Hopefully, soon.
This is the feature that I’m waiting for.
So how much do you pay a month for everything with the ring security?
Ring alarm is $10 per month, or save $20 and pay $100 for the year and that covers unlimited camera coverage. By far the cheapest home security on the market. I just ditched SimpliSafe which I believe is the next cheapest and that was $27/month. I already had these smoke/CO detectors and the door bell. So now I saved over $200 for the year and now all my cameras and smoke/co detectors are monitored. You can't beat it.
Now we gotta get you to test out the Google alarm. 😀
lol...Nest you mean..I might..but it seems very pricey...
Yeah Nest / Google ish whatever limbo company. The sad thing I've seen from them, I haven't seen any new devices to add to the security system come out and its been what a year now?
Your right its really damn expensive. Almost Brinks or ADT expensive after they suck you dry with long term deals. 😂
Yes... I'm still waiting for updates on their Nest Hello..
Do the sensor alarm only send notifications? Or does it have and alarm going off too?
As long as you have power and internet when the alarm goes off, a notification will be sent to you. If not, then the monitoring station will be notified via cellular and they will notify you.
Do you know if they are going to have Key Fob?
I haven’t heard about any plans for a key fob.
Great review! How long does the keypad battery seem to last? One thing that bugs me is that it can't take an installed DC power supply.
Ring states from 6-10 months. You can plug it in with the included micro USB cable and power adapter...5 volts.
@@LifeHackster Thanks!
How is the battery life of the keypad?
Nice. Thanks!
You are welcome.
The motion sensors doesn't trigger a chime like the contact sensors.
I think I like this Smart home things
Thanks very helpful !
Can you use a z wave lock with the alarm? Like a Yale
Not at this time.
Check the faq on the ring site, they added support for a few locks
@@Groundpounder25 cool thanks for the update!
Thanks for the review kabayan..
You are welcome.
Wow!
Do I need this system if I already have 5 ring camera around the outside of my house?
Yes, as another layer of protection inside your house. Plus, if there is a power or internet failure, you are still protected. Those 5 ring cameras will not alert you or record anything when the power is out.
"Glass break sensor soon." Still waiting.
Agree! For now I'm using Alexa as a glass break sensor which I found out from another forum but waiting for Ring to come out with one
Just use the motion detector?
Yah, I don’t think they’ll make a glass break sensor, they already have what they believe to be enough reasons for customers to choose ring (affordable monthly plans and larger ecosystem). They want that extra $5 a month, for glass breaking detection services!!
Anyone know if we are able to arm and disarm via Siri? Since ring won’t be using key fobs...
I don't think so. I'm not sure but it is very easy to arm and disarm via the app...
