    Top tips for Modeling in SketchUp in 2018
    1. Use a 3 Button Mouse
    The easiest way to speed up navigation in your model is still to use a 3 Button mouse. A 3 button mouse allows you to move around your model more quickly by scrolling your mouse wheel to zoom in and out, clicking and holding your center mouse button down to orbit, and holding the shift and center mouse button to pan.
    2. Use Keyboard Shortcuts
    Keyboard shortcuts allow you to activate various tools in SketchUp without having to hunt down icons in your menus to activate tools. This can result in a significant time savings.
    3. Groups
    One of the most important things you can do when modeling something in SketchUp is to use groups and components. One of the most important features from groups is that they keep things in your models from merging. In addition, you can use them to organize your models (more on this later).
    4. Components
    While groups can be important for keeping geometry from merging, components are more useful basically any time you have an object that’s going to repeat in your models. This is because when you make a copy of a component, every change you make to one copy of an object occurs to every other instance of the object in a model at the same time.
    5. Organize Your Models Using the Outliner
    Once you’ve started using groups and components in your models, you can use the outliner tab to keep your models organized. You can name and organize both groups and components, as well as grouping and nesting objects to keep them organized.
    6. Inference Locking with Arrow Keys
    One of the biggest problems you can have, especially as a beginner, can be creating off-axis geometry. This can lead to tons of problems - faces not closing, etc. You can press the up, down, left, or right arrows to lock to the various axes.
    7. Copy with Move Tool
    However, one of the biggest shortcuts you can use is to create copies using the move tool by tapping the control key. This will activate copy mode, and then you can create a copy of an object either by clicking or by typing in a distance and moving your cursor in a direction. One of the bonuses of this is the ability to create arrays, or multiple copies with the same tools.
    8. Soften/Smooth Slider
    As you start working with more advanced tools, like Flowify or Curviloft, you’ll often end up creating geometry with a lot of unhidden geometry. You can use the soften/smooth slider to hide and smooth geometry in your model to smooth it back out.
    9. Use 3D Warehouse models
    The 3D warehouse has thousands of models that you can download for free into your model. When populating the background models, spend your time working on your model, not background models.
    10. Save Camera Views with Scenes
    Rather than trying to navigate back to the perfect camera view each time, simply save your camera view by going to up to “View,” “Animation,” “Add Scene.” This will store your scene for future use. You can access this view by clicking on the tab at the top of the screen.

    These tutorials are first class, right up there with the best content on RUclips for ANY topic. I've been learning SketchUp and Vray over these difficult last few weeks and your videos have been indispensable. Well done and thank you. 👍

    Hi Justin! Another Great video! Not Sketchup 2018 specific but great. I missed one tip though!
    Put your stuff on layers. As your build gets bigger it is always good to put your stuff on layers.
    For instance: walls, doors, windows, first floor second floor etcetera.

      That's a good one - definitely super useful when models get a bit larger. You're correct, they're not really tips for SketchUp 2018 specifically as much as tips for modeling in SketchUp in 2018 ;p - I'll probably put out a similar video with similar tips in 2019 just because they're so important for everyone to know - LOL . Thanks!

    On inferencing with up left and right you didn't mention the down key which tbh I find more useful than any especially when modeling off axis as it locks to that plane or line either parallel or perpendicular if you press again similarly using the shift key to lock movement to a line or plane.
    All the amazing tricks I learned and the aha moments I realized were in the sketchucation websites "Duh Book" which I have passed on to all Sketchup modelers and without fail people have had many many "duh" moments after reading it.

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  6 лет назад

      That's a good point - for some reason, I just never really use that one, but it's definitely there and very useful. Probably because most of the examples I cover here end up on-axis. That book is a good resource as well - thanks!

    I tapped to like! Quite useful information. I have a question though, am a newbie. I find grouping in SketchUp quite cumbersome because you have basically got to select the whole object. In instances where you are working on a geometry where there are other geometries in the model, selecting that one geometry you want to group becomes quite difficult because other geometries "get in the way" or I fail to select other faces and lines. Isn't there a key that one can use so that when one face is selected a second click selects the other faces and lines as well? Please help me out.

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  5 лет назад

      Well you're always going to have to be careful that you're selecting the proper things...there's not really a way around that. This gets easier if you group things as you go, rather than waiting until later to group objects

      Thanks very much! Glad you found it helpful - I've done a bit of private tutoring, but it's a bit difficult since this isn't my full time job. That's part of why I'm trying to get this Essentials course up and running - it should cover a bit of everything, then I can answer whatever questions are left. Thanks for watching!

      You can turn sections and section planes on and off in the view menu. To delete them, you just select them like and other geometry and hit delete. Did that help? Thanks!

    Be carefull with these 3D Warehouse models! Most of them are excesivelly complex for most of modelling. If possible, just add them after finish your modelling and carefully choose right one (some are messed or too complex). Most of simple models i make by myself just because control of the geometry (you can adjust or pre - prepare your model for rendering far easier than downloaded).
