    FIRST! Are there other ways you're creating fencing in your SketchUp models?

    That one point, "Type the distance you want the posts divided by" is astounding. That's better than using move/copy to place the 2nd post at 8', then x (number of posts)

      Lol - happened on it by accident - I accidentally typed /8' instead of divided by 8 and it worked! What a great feature!

    I bought the full vali architecture package, something I found very helpful with it is using the instant walls feature, but I remove everything so its just a blank wall and I use that for sketching floor plans instead of just drawing lines. I would not say its necessarily faster and you have to delete hidden geometry but its really helpful when you start doing doors and windows since you don't need to resize the frames and you always get the look you want. Plus if there is a 2+ story building you don't have to worry about the corners not matching all the way. Still getting the hang of all the features in the package (roads and terrain especially) but I think its definitely worth the money.

      I'm a bit confused - why are you using instant walls then deleting the walls? Are you just using it to get the sizing of your walls right? I do feel like the package is one of the better extension deals - there are a lot of time saving functions in the extension - I especially like Instant Cladding for creating detailed walls that look good in renderings

      @@Thesketchupessentials No sorry I think I said that in a confusing way. Instead of drawing in walls using the line tool then extruding, I adjust my instant wall setting so that I will get basically just a 0.20m thick and say 2m high blank white wall so that all of my exterior and interior walls are always the exact height and thickness I need and the instant doors and windows can be applied easier.
      The only downside I have found to doing it way is when the walls are generated it has some hidden geometry (some lines) that I just go in and remove since it can cause issues with how the windows and doors do their cut through function.

    Something simple and stupid I discovered yesterday after half a decade of Sketchup was this;
    Before extruding a surface, I sometimes paint it. If it's a group or component and it's 'open', I make sure the other side is painted too, because this surface will develop into something more complex, and whatever is on the under surface now, will show up by 'default' as you go and sometimes have to be painted anyway. I could close the entity, paint the whole thing and open it again, another way to be certain both sides are painted the same.
    So I 'lift' the entity up to be able to see the underside, and paint that, rotating it back to iso-view after.
    Another way to paint the bottom I discovered, is to right-click the entity and choose "reverse faces". Of course! The other side shows it's colors and you correct that without having to 'rotate' up and down again. Also, when you're using push/pull to extend some joists out 5" by double clicking each one, and one goes the wrong way. You have to grab it, put it where it goes, and then you "double click" the next one and it goes somewhere weird too, because you forgot to 'reset' the push/pull tool to 5". From when the first face went the wrong way, just click "undo", then right click the surface and choose "reverse faces". The push/pull tool is still set to 5" so just double click the face now.
    Last one I like is how the Tape measure tool imitates how a carpenter uses one. Using the tool, click a point to start and drag out to where you want to go, and do what you want to do with it, then release the tool to measure something else. If you go back and click the starting point, the tool is still stuck to it. Press control and click the starting point, and the tool 'seems' to be stuck, until you pull away a few feet, and it magically becomes available again, just like a carpenter with a 20' tape that's too far to reach to release. You could just press escape.

    When doing the copy and move I have tried your suggestion of /8' and it does not work. It simply treats it as 8 and divides by that. Any suggestions why this is not working for me?

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  3 года назад

      That's what it's supposed to do. It doesn't divide by a custom distance - it divides by equal spacing based on a count

    • @johnhewetson4406
      @johnhewetson4406 3 года назад

      @@Thesketchupessentials Maybe I did not explain myself well. At the 2 minute mark you say "it can also be divided by a distance such as 8 feet and then it will space them 8 feet apart". I must be missing something here as when I enter "/8' " it simply divides by eight and does not space it 8 feet apart.

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  3 года назад +1

      @@johnhewetson4406 Nope you're right I did say that, and I'm not sure why (this was 2.5 years ago). As far as I know you can only do the multiplication, not the division by distance. That wouldn't even make sense - you can't pick two points on a line then space based on distance practically, only by number of copies. Absolutely no clue where that came from

    well, it was actually a very short summary. It is possible make a line on a terrain by drape tool, and then by follow me tool make fence folloving terrain. It is a bit pain to position texture (as fence is not in horizontal line), but works fine...You can use texture with displacement and transcluency mapping to real looking fencing (rusty netting etc...)

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  4 года назад

      You could use maps if you're using a rendering program - however, since this is more for actually modeling the geometry inside of SketchUp itself, it didn't really fit in this video...

      @Thomeeno 4 года назад

      @@Thesketchupessentials Yeah, true. . But way with drape and following terrain is very fast and usefull if you want some solid fence even in difficult terrain... In some models i just use some basic sketch up textures and still it looks very realistic as a bit far background... But definitelly nice tutorial with addons i will definitelly take a look closer....

    I think these commercials are pretty annoying Justin.... sorry but I just had to say this.
    Great video by the way! I don't do fences until now. But with the export to Unreal Engine 4 in mind this actually could become quite important.
    Thanks for the video!

      It's a fair comment Willem - I'm kind of testing them out right now, but am trying to keep them short and provide as much value in the videos as possible. Does Unreal Engine have any kind of a plugin structure that can generate fences?

    • @willembuiting
      @willembuiting 5 лет назад

      TheSketchUpEssentials TheSketchUpEssentials in Unreal Engine there is an option to create this kind of stuff along a spline.
      I already did something like that to create a river. You can use it to create a road or a railway or a fence for that matter. The idea is to create just one segment and Unreal will repeat it along a spline. It also can follow / carve out the terrain.
      Sounds difficult but there are some good tutorials on RUclips!
      Have a look at this!
