    Thanks for sharing. Very comprehensive as usual. There is one more thing that can be done that will significantly speed up and reduce the size of your model - a good library of props. 3D warehouse does not allow for a quick and ordered comparison of "value for memory" props. My private library does this, and I dare say most advanced users have developed similar libraries that they keep to themselves. Companies will have these stashed away as their "assets". They are able to simply range up and down similar props to select the ideal prop for a particular application. Not only that, but all their props are "smart" models 3D warehouse could do a similar thing with a little bit of planning.

    Thanks for doing the videos. One super simple tip is to use the monochrome mode. This speeds up the viewport with complex models. It also helps with finding backside faces which can be important if your going to render it.

    Great tips. Especially about the circles and curves. I have this oc attitude of overly detailing stuff. And I'm quite struggling on how to get rid of this attitude. I also have a bad attitude of putting furniture on spaces where i won't even bother making a render with, mainly because i dont have an idea yet what angles to render while working with the model.
    Anyway may i know what texture was used for the grass? The grass looks great coz it already has soil and grassy patches on it.

    I've realized one thing that if you have a 20 mb file size of skp, and then you ctrl+a and delete all the file inside the skp and save it, you'll still have a 20 mb file size, and when you try to clean it up through the model info>statistics>purge unused, and save it, you'll still have a 20mb file size. Does anyone know what happened? is this a bug?

    Great tips as always. I discovered a productivity tip: create a separate entity info tray, placed close to your go to mouse corner on the screen to always be able to see line lengths primarily, but layer changes or assignments go much faster by avoiding all the silly scrolling in 2018's tray system. Saves me nearly an hour a week scrolling or lost focus as a result of scrolling, or cycling to tape measure etc for lengths. Now... if I could right click this to assign layers... any way to do this? That'd be a neat widget. seems like i once saw one but can't recall it just now.
    Other super time saver is install "rotate 90 deg" extension (I think Sketchucation has it?) tapping a hot key or mouse button assigned function for rotate 90 in red, green or blue axis saves "move" as the method which is slow and imprecise for this hundreds of uses a week function. Super handy. Works in 2018 far as I can tell.

    • @Thesketchupessentials

      I like that custom entity info tray idea - I spend a lot of time scrolling in my tray, which can get a bit annoying - thanks!

    Some great tips, thanks! How would you go about simplifying models that have already been created? For example, if you had already created those bike racks with too many faces, is there a method or extension to reduce the resolution and cut down the number of faces/edges?

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  3 года назад

      Not easily - you could use the extensions Transmutr or Skimp - those have a simplification algorithm

    Five years I've been waiting for someone to explain why components are better than groups for repetitive stuff. What if each component were "made unique"? Would the file size for all 250 entities still be 1/100th the size?

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  6 лет назад +1

      Well, there's a speed aspect, and also the aspect where you can make changes to all instances of a component at once, which is also a timesaver. Actually I was surprised - I tested this with groups and the file size was also much smaller. That said, if there's any chance you're going to use more than one of an object and might want to change all the copies in the future, I'd recommend components, not groups. Thanks!

    I tried everything you said Justin. Model went from 62MB to 11MB which is great. But still really laggy. It's a garden design with lots of plants, however, I have tried to limit them to 1MB file size. I have hardly populated it yet, so god knows how bad it will be when I add more trees. I wonder if it's the settings in the model, or simply the components are too big. Is there anything else you can suggest? Thanks

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  4 года назад +1

      Minimize the outliner. Pick a fast style without profiles on. Put your plants on a layer and turn them off when you don't use them. Often even with a smaller file size, if objects have lots of edges, they can still slow down your model

    About geometry density... is there a way to reduce the number of geometries/entities of an object that's already made to get a "rougher" object so to speak? maybe if you already finished making something but want to change it later, or in something you import from 3d warehouse? Also thank's a lot for your tutorials I basically learned sketchup in a handful of days on youtube mostly from your videos.

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  6 лет назад +1

      Not that I'm aware of - Cleanup might be able to merge some of your coplanar faces and that sort of thing, but I think to actually reduce already created geometry, you'd have to just delete it out and re-model it. Thanks!

    • @chiefxtrc
      @chiefxtrc 6 лет назад

      I just found sort of a workaround. When I import a component from 3D warehouse I explode it and it allows me to edit smaller parts of the geometry without distorting other stuff around it, which was what I wanted to achieve, basically. It's not as elegant as being able to reduce the polygon count but I do very simple audio DIY stuff so it works for me. Cheers

  • @utopianvisionary
    @utopianvisionary 4 года назад

    Hey, does it speed up just as efficiently if you just group the geometry instead of making it a component?

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  4 года назад

      Not sure - as a general rule, if you're repeating the same object a lot, you should use components in case you want to make changes

    Do you have a video about getting rid of lines that won't delete? I'm working on a project for school and I have lines that just turn blue and won't go away.

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  5 лет назад

      When they turn blue, what are you doing? Do you hit the delete key after you've selected them?

    • @phillippatrick1295
      @phillippatrick1295 5 лет назад

      @@Thesketchupessentials Yes. It doesn't delete after the first try. Since I posted this comment however, I have gotten rid of the lines. I just kept clicking and hitting delete until they went away. To be more specific, I'd double click them, a bunch of hidden lines would pop up, then I'd click it again, then hit delete. After doing that a couple of times the lines went away. I'm not realy sure if there is a more effective way to solve that issue. It was very tedius and time consuming. After going on a sketchup forum I was told that I probably had too many layers with lines on different layers intersecting with eachother.

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  6 лет назад

      Lol - that's a common problem - just remember that generally speaking, the people you're showing the model to will never look at it to the level of detail that you did when you were creating it :) - Thanks for watching!

    • @refusoagaino6824
      @refusoagaino6824 6 лет назад

      I think the essence of what I've learned over half a decade of Sketchup is "only draw what is needed". Nick Sonder is the master at creating low poly models that are still very accurate so that details can be developed as required, for 'working' or construction plans. It's an exercise in "backing up" because we always want to draw more detail. "Less is more" Mies Van de Rohe.
