    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    As many of you know, SketchUp comes with a lot of built-in textures that you can apply to your models. However, sometimes, you want to use textures other than the ones found in a stock SketchUp installation. I wanted to run you through a few different locations where you can get textures that you can apply in your model. I’ll also link you to several videos I’ve done previously about importing and re-sizing materials to make them look more realistic.
    1. You Own Photos
    Depending on what you’re trying to do, you can use photos to find textures to apply to your model. Usually if you do this, you’re probably going to be using the match photo tool. SketchUp has a great tool build in for creating models from photos using the match photo tool. As a part of this tool, you can apply parts of your photos to a model as a texture. In addition, you can also import parts of a photo and place them on faces. However, this is probably only good for models where you’re trying to quickly create a textured model, and it won’t be good for too much else.
    Before I move on to the next few parts of this video, I want to make sure you understand the difference between texture photos and seamless texture photos. Let’s take these two brick walls. If you look at the textures, you can see that SketchUp tiles any photo you use over and over again to fill in the wall with texture. However, some photos are set up in a way that they tile well, and some aren’t. For example - this red brick image is tiling, but the textures don’t line up because they’re not set up right. This creates this ugly, distorted look. For any of these methods moving forward, make sure you’re searching for “seamless” textures to avoid this distorted look.
    2. Texture websites
    There are many websites out there that are dedicated to providing higher quality textures. Some of them are free, some of them cost money. Some of them have great textures, and some of them are full of images that aren’t seamless and so aren’t as useful. A couple that I’ve used in the past are SketchUp Texture Club.com and Textures.com (formerly CGTextures.com). I like that textures.com has an option to show only seamless textures.
    3. Google image search
    Often times, you can do a Google image search to try to find what you’re looking for. Two things to be careful of when you do this - first of all, make sure you search for “Seamless” and your texture type. Secondly, make sure that the images you’re using are actually legally acceptable for you to use. Just make sure to read the terms of use on any site you end up on to make sure you’re actually allowed to use their images.
    4. Download from the 3D warehouse!
    One of the best new features of the SketchUp 2017 release is that they added the ability to quickly and easily import textures from the 3D warehouse into your model. This way, you can find a texture you like in the warehouse, click on materials, and click download to download it into your model for your use. This is now probably the quickest and easiest place to get textures.

    Thanks so much , we really appreciated ^-^. We do not have an option to select seamless textures, because our textures are all seamless

    very informative and directly applicable to my imagined, sort of hazy, plans. Question: I,m weird in that i actually like books as supplemental material to action, ie., doing practice exercises. i do have access to probably most Sketchup texts out there. i just don,t know where to start. Do you normally refer to maybe a favored book?... with special ref to these PhotoMatch model making activities? Thanks. Great work you're doing. --steve

    Sometimes in sizing textures like brick, block, tile, etc., I'll draw a small rectangle to scale for the item being applied and then use the green arrow to adjust the texture to fit the rectangle.

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  5 лет назад

      The green arrow? Meaning the scale tool? Interesting - does that actually adjust the texture size?

    • @munionman
      @munionman 5 лет назад

      @@Thesketchupessentials Yes, it does. I will also use the tape measure tool to double check dimensions on the textures.

    Acme brick offers a freebie brick texture generator using real Acme products and colors for hi res output. Unmatched in speed and quality for brick, block, etc. Especially if a specific acme, feather lite, cordillera, etc product is required and a random texture won't do. Also great as a baseling to make custom non Acme look alikes. I'd suggest reviewing their software. Does a super job.

    Hey Justin, is there any reason why I open 3d warehouse, find a model like you did (Red Brick House) and click on the materials (which shows 13 materials) but will not list them in the materials window?

    Hi Justin,
    I have been trying to use a 3d texture I downloaded from the 3d warehouse to apply into a wall but im finding it very difficult how to make the tiles to repeat and how to cut it where the wall finishes.
    I would appreciate very much if you could help somehow!!!!!!!!!!

    I noticed on that when you go to down load a texture that there are different sized textures available for download on Textures.com. What size should we download? Also if the model is going to be rendered is the size important?
    Great videos thanks!

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  6 лет назад

      It always depends on what you're doing. For general texture usage and general rendering, you probably don't need (or want) the really high resolution files. They'll probably slow your model down. That being said, if you don't like the quality of your rendering that's created, you may want to try the higher resolution files. Did that make sense? Thanks!

    • @jeffreywarshafsky6025

      Thanks! A video on putting the same wood texture on all the faces of many different components with the grain oriented correctly would be helpful. as well as how best to use making textures unique when modeling. Many pitfalls in doing this and I hope you can simplify the procedure.

    I can't seem to find an answer to this: sketchup 8, if I try to add a custom material, I get a circle with a bar instead of paint bucket. It does not let me apply on the face I've chosen. Any idea why? thank you

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  6 лет назад

      I don't know - I don't really know anything about the capabilities of SketchUp 8 - good luck!

    • @mdnight126
      @mdnight126 6 лет назад

      It's all good. It wouldn't let me because my face wasn't flushed. It was actually pushed back. Once I made it flush I was able to add the texture. Thank you anyway for responding.
