Hey kids! Its your good buddy Uncle Ben here with another Weekend Wankshop lesson!
On today's episode, i'm gonna give you all a note-for-note lesson on how to play Kirk Hammet's amazing solo from Struggle Within, from Metallica's legendary Black Album!!! I really feel like if you want to know all of the stuff Kirk does, you should learn this solo; its got his pentatonic stuff, his wah pedal use, his legato, pull-offs to open strings, everything! Quite possibly his best solo on their self-titled album.
Standard tuning, lots of fun, not as hard as it sounds. I'm using my Suhr Modern Satin and Fractal Axe FX III on the Petrucci "learning to lead" preset. It sounds so good!!!!
Let me know what other classic Metallica solos you want to learn next on Weekend Wankshop! Thanks for watching!

You kept that awesome sweet riff right after the solo in the intro. Yes! Also, if I remember correctly from the Year in the Life video, he changes guitar once or twice in the solo, which you can tell from the tone. However, the tone on this recording is SO sweet. Gotta learn this one quick. Thanks for the lesson, Uncle Ben!

The solo was actually played 14 times with a different guitar. Afterwards Kirk chose the one that sounded best to him without knowing what guitar or take it was. It turned out to be his ESP KH-2 ;)

Ben, that was beyond cool! That is one of my favorite Kirk solos as well. I had to learn that solo by ear back when the album came out...the internet, as it is today, did not exist (kinda revealed my age...lol). Luckily the "Year and a half in the life of..." came out shortly after and that clip you referred to have me an idea of what positions and techniques Kirk was using. I'm glad that the newcomers and old schools (like myself) have someone like you to share their talent and insight with in this musical world. You rock!

See? These kinds of things are insane... Talking about the Post Solo Riff... In a video you mentioned how awesome it was and I couldn't agree more. I was headbanging on that riff ever since I was a little kid listening to my dad's CD/tapes. Today I was listening to your solo demonstration and just when the intro music was supposed to happen (any Metallica in Major Key) all of a sudden the badass riff kicked in and kept going, just like my brain expected. Gave me chills. So awesome and good job n the video. Got to relearn some things out of that.

Excellent tutorial. I’ve been watching play throughs on this song because there were so many tricks and sounds I wanted to add to my play style. I definitely can’t do any of it to full speed yet… especially the “Yngwie pedals” lick. I was going to try to learn Creeping Death first but felt I could pick up on this one easier without quitting.
